How many hours per day do you spend on hookup apps? Take our poll and see what others say.

How many hours per day do you spend on hookup apps? Take our poll and see what others say.

How many hours a day do you spend on hookup apps? And how much time is too much time? That’s what one U.K. man wants to know.

“I am an out gay man living in an urban area,” he writes in a new confessional published by the Guardian. “I spend hours and hours online looking at hook-up ads on my phone. In addition, I hook up a lot. It is wonderful and awful in equal measure.”

The man continues: “I’m sure this is a challenge for a lot of other people, too. Society has rarely had so many people with so many sexual opportunities in a short span of time. Any thoughts on how I should handle this time-wasting distraction?”

According to Dr. Greg Carson, a psychologist based in Los Angeles, becoming addicted to hookup apps isn’t all that unusual. In a recent article, he compared carrying a cellphone to having casino slot machine in your pocket that “continually [begs] for your attention with buzzes, dings and flashes.”

Dating apps are the worst,” he continues. “Much like the more generic slot machines of Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, dating apps give you unpredictable reinforcements like woofs, unlocks, and matches—and lots of ‘Hey’ and ‘Sup.’ But unlike those other platforms, dating apps center around one primary goal: sex.”

Which is precisely what makes them all the more enticing.

So what can be done about this? The answer: Not much. At least according to Carson. Sure, you could delete your Grindr and SCRUFF accounts, but you’ll probably just download then again a week later.

“I’m not saying you need to enter rehab or give up apps altogether,” Dr. Carson writes, “but I am saying you might want to wake up to the fact that you’re less in charge of your obsession with that little brick in your pocket than you think. It’s hijacking your brain.”

GOP Congressman to Reintroduce ‘First Amendment Defense Act’, the Vilest Religious Freedom Bill of Our Time

GOP Congressman to Reintroduce ‘First Amendment Defense Act’, the Vilest Religious Freedom Bill of Our Time

First Amendment Defense Act

Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho, above left) will reintroduce the First Amendment Defense Act, and House and Senate members are also planning to file legislation to protect people with religious objections to same-sex marriage.

Labrador filed FADA last year with Senator Mike Lee (R-UT, above left). It had 172 co-sponsors.

Donald Trump has pledged to sign the bill in his first 100 days.

Buzzfeed’s Dominic Holden first reported on the developments.

I’ve confirmed House and Senate members plan to refile bills to protect people who have a religious objection to same-sex marriage.

The Human Rights Campaign explained what’s in the First Amendment Defense Act last year:

The legislation would prohibit any adverse action by the federal government against an individual or organization for discriminatory actions against legally married same-sex couples as long as they claim they are acting in accordance with their religious beliefs. “Adverse action” is broadly defined to include the denial or revocation of a federal tax status or deduction; denial of a federal grant, contract, loan, benefit or employment; or any other act of discrimination. The bill provides individuals and organizations the right to sue the federal government for monetary damages in federal court.

If passed, this legislation would create a breakdown of government services and runaway litigation.  It would permit a federal employee, for example, to refuse to process tax returns, visa applications or Social Security checks whenever a same-sex couple’s paperwork appears on his or her desk.  This legislation would also permit recipients of federal grants and contracts, including those for social services programs like homeless shelters and substance abuse treatment programs, to turn away LGBT people.  It allows any of these individuals or groups, or anyone else who believes they have been somehow required by the federal government to approve of married same-sex couples, to file a lawsuit and potentially receive damages from taxpayer money.

Melania Trump eats diamonds on new VF cover, but didn’t Maya Rudolph already do that?!

Melania Trump eats diamonds on new VF cover, but didn’t Maya Rudolph already do that?!

It’s a question we suspect we’ll be asking ourselves a lot over the next four years: Who thought this was a good idea?!

Melania Trump, best known for her poor portrayal of a happy rich person, has graced the cover of the latest Vanity Fair Mexico.

Related: This candid nine second video will actually make your heart break for Melania Trump

The magazine debuted the cover, and a portion of the accompanying photo spread, today.

In it, Melania joyously twirls some spaghetti from a bowl onto her spoon — but wait — that’s not takeout from The Olive Garden. Instead of food, her bowl is filled with precious diamond jewelry. Klassy.

This is off on so many counts, especially given the timing of her husband digging his heels in on the whole “Mexico will pay for our new border wall” spiel.

In another photo, she poses with a cup full of diamonds:

“We demand Vanity Fair Mexico not to distribute their magazine with Melania Trump on the cover; it’s a mockery and humiliation for Mexico,” Mic reports one woman tweeted in Spanish.

Obviously horrible optics aside — because what kind of message does the physical consumption of extreme wealth really send? — how, and we mean how in God’s name, did nobody ever say, “Hey, doesn’t this seem a lot like that skit that made the rounds last year?”

And if some wise aide had uttered that phrase, perhaps someone else would have said, “Oh yeah, the one with Maya Rudolph about Melania eating diamonds?”

“Yes!” a third would cry out (she has a lot of aides now). “It was literally called ‘Melania’s Diamonds.’ Maybe this photo shoot is a bad idea after all.”

But no such conversation was had, and now we get to direct you, once again, to a skit from NBC’s “Maya & Marty” titled, as mentioned above, “Melania’s Diamonds.”

Way back in July of last year, we ran a post titled “Maya Rudolph’s ‘Melania Trump Eating Diamonds’ more relevant than ever.

We’ll be the first to say she one-upped us, bigly.
