Southern California Agencies Reach Out to LGBTQ Parents

Southern California Agencies Reach Out to LGBTQ Parents

Post submitted by JP Regis, Manager, HRC’s Children, Youth & Families Program.

HRC Foundation works closely with foster care and adoption agencies across the country through All Children – All Families (ACAF), a program aimed at helping these agencies welcome LGBTQ youth and families. Through the decade-old ACAF program, agencies work to make sure their policies and practices are LGBTQ-inclusive.

Once agencies have truly “rolled out the welcome mat” to LGBTQ folks, they often look to increase the number of LGBTQ families coming through their doors through targeted recruitment events.

RaiseAChild, a non-profit organization in California, assists agencies in doing just that through its annual “Let Love Define Family®” tour of free recruitment events. In fact, RaiseAChild works specifically with agencies engaged in ACAF to offer the LGBTQ community the opportunity to learn about building families through foster parenting and adoption.

“Not only can more LGBTQ people imagine the possibility of building families through fostering and adoption, but we are also thrilled to see a growing number of non-LGBTQ singles and couples attend with these events as well,” said RaiseAChild, Founder and C.E.O, Rich Valenza.

Last month, eight ACAF agencies partnered with RaiseAChild as part of the most recent recruitment tour throughout seven Southern California cities. Agencies included: Extraordinary Families, Five Acres, Kidsave International, Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services, Penny Lane Centers, The Village Family Services, Vista Del Mar Child & Family Services, and Walden Family Services. These events turned out the largest crowds of prospective foster and adoptive parents in the event’s five-year history.

In a time when more than 100,000 young people age out of foster care every year without finding a permanent family, no parent should ever be turned away simply for who they love or who they are. We also know that far too many of these youth in foster care are LGBTQ and in need of affirming homes.

HRC’s All Children – All Families project is thankful to our participating agencies and organizations like RaiseAChild for their commitment to removing barriers for LGBTQ folks interested in foster parenting or adoption.

Scott Pruitt Leads Opposition Against Transgender People in America

Scott Pruitt Leads Opposition Against Transgender People in America

All eyes may be on Tom Price’s confirmation hearing this morning, but there’s another anti-LGBTQ nominee who is facing his own hearing to be the next Secretary of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). His name is Scott Pruitt, and his record is a dangerous one.

While serving as Oklahoma’s Attorney General, Scott Pruitt has led conservative opposition to the federal government’s guidance that transgender students be treated equally in schools, including being allowed to use school facilities that correspond to their gender identity.

But Pruitt’s stance isn’t unique among President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming appointees. From calling the guidance an “overreach” to saying it was “violative to common sense,” Scott Pruitt’s consistent opposition puts him in alignment with the many other anti-LGBTQ appointees within the Trump Administration. Check out their records here

The Pruitt Record: Scott Pruitt Leads Opposition Against Transgender People in America

Pruitt Told Anti-LGBTQ Activist Tony Perkins That The Obama Administration’s Guidance On Transgender Equality Is “So Objectionable And So Violative Of Common Sense.” [Audio] (Comments begin at 28:25.)

In a Letter to the Obama Administration, Pruitt Claimed the New Guidance on Transgender Students was an “Overreach.” “We believe that your actions today are unlawful and that they represent the most egregious administrative overreach to date. You have taken a public policy issue that must, by our constitutional design, be worked out in the laboratory of democracy and enforced it on all people. And you have done so through a misuse of the spending power.” [Office of the Oklahoma Attorney General, [5.13.16]

Following His Letter, Pruitt Joined a Lawsuit Seeking to Block the Guidance for Transgender Students. “Pruitt, on the state’s behalf, joined 10 other states on Wednesday in filing a lawsuit to block implementation of Obama administration guidance on school policy regarding transgender students’ use of restrooms, locker rooms and other facilities typically separated by gender. The lawsuit was filed the day after legislation addressing the issue failed in a House of Representatives committee. On Thursday, the House passed by unanimous consent a resolution supporting Pruitt’s lawsuit against what it calls a ‘blatant example of federal government and executive power overreach.’” [Tulsa World, 5.26.16]

WATCH: New ad shows MMA fighter Conor McGregor in all his glory

Male objectification is having its moment in popular culture, a trend we’re totally behind — particularly when the likes of handsome MMA fighter Conor McGregor are more than willing to get in on the action.

From Old Spice’s former pitchman Isaiah Mustafa to Anderson Davis, the handsome model who burned off all his clothes to shill Kraft Zesty Italian salad dressing, the movement has been gaining steam over the last decade, and it’s fortunately becoming more pronounced as we speak. Talking to AdWeek, Steve O’Connell of Red Tettemer O’Connell  + Partners attempted to explain why this is happening: “Objectifying men doesn’t really upset anybody,” he said. “You really can’t offend the white male.” Hmm.

This lengthy ad for Pegasus World Cup is just the latest example of the trend, and it features McGregor losing his clothes to ride a horse bareback. Sure, the whole thing is a stretched-out tease, and the inferred nudity is blurred out — but this is a commercial, so you can’t have your expectations set too high.

It also costars Jon Lovitz, who opts to keep his clothing on.
