Pink Triangle Park in the Castro, San Francisco.

It’s a memorial just on the side to the major intersection of Castro and Market Streets. I had walked through this small memorial several years ago, but this time visiting with my dear friend Mitchel brought additional significance.

From their site:

“The fifteen granite pylons rise in remembrance of the estimated fifteen thousand gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender victims who were persecuted, imprisoned and murdered during and after the reign of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany.”

Uber CEO caught on camera blaming driver for not being able to succeed

Uber CEO caught on camera blaming driver for not being able to succeed

A video has emerged of Uber CEO Travis Kalanick arguing with an Uber driver about how the company treats its employees independent contractors, and it’s a real doozy.

If you’ve been out to a bar anytime in the last five years and left just barely remembering how to operate your two legs in an alternating pattern, then odds are you’ve interfaced with ride sharing apps like Uber and Lyft.

The two companies have been in fierce competition with one another, with Uber taking most of the heat for playing dirty.

And more often than not, the drivers get the shortest end of the stick.

In the video obtained by Bloomberg, the notorious executive shimmies to Maroon Five while riding around San Francisco. The driver, Fawze Kamel, begins chatting with Kalanick once they arrive at the destination, and things rapidly turn from polite to tense.

Kamel complains that the company has been dropping its ridesharing fares so much, his own slice of the pie in the higher-end Uber Black is getting squashed in the process. Kalanick defends the actions as necessary to compete with Lyft, but in the process, becomes quite aggressive towards Kamel. He explains that people like Kamel “don’t like to take responsibility for their own sh*t” and instead try to blame other people for their problems.

Where have we heard that before? Oh, it’s the calling card of privileged conservatives — everyone can succeed if they just work hard. And if that doesn’t pan out, the only person to blame is yourself. Perhaps Kalanick learned this particular line while sitting on President Trump’s advisory council. Who knows?

As Engaget reports:

While it’s hard to know just how much Uber affected Kamel’s bottom line, there is some evidence to back up his claims. Uber drivers have complained that fare cuts are making the job unsustainable, and the company recently paid $20 million to resolve complaints that it exaggerated drivers’ potential income. At least for some workers, then, Uber isn’t nearly as alluring as it was in previous years.

Details aside, this is not how we would hope a CEO would speak to an employee at the lowest rung of the ladder — a rung that is designed not to lead up.

Watch LIVE: Donald Trump Addresses Joint Session of Congress

Donald Trump is scheduled to give his first address to a joint session of Congress tonight at 9 pm.

ABC News reports:

Few details about the speech have been released. Trump is set to deliver it from the House chamber at 9 p.m. Eastern time.

A list of talking points about the speech was provided to ABC News by someone who received it from the White House, giving some insight into the topics he may touch on tonight.

Tax and regulatory reform, improvements to the workplace for working parents, “the disaster of Obamacare,” education access, “a great rebuilding of the American military” and commitments to veterans are listed as topics that Trump is expected to discuss, noting that they are areas where the president wants to work with Congress.

A senior administration official says that Trump will open the speech with a call for unity before touting a push to complete the Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines as early accomplishments.

According to the official, Trump will cite an infrastructure bill, space exploration, education and curbing illegal immigration as legislative priorities, and talk about protecting the country from “radical Islamic terrorism” and ISIS.

Chances are you’re familiar with bulbous hate-sack Alex Jones, a fringy jibber-jabberer who thinks Lady Gaga is a satanist and is overly concerned with gay frogs.

Apparently eager to profile the closest thing we’ve got to a sentient perirectal abscess, German newspaper Der Spiegel decided to go to lunch (and then, perhaps, lose their lunch) with the wigglesome wingnut sans his shirt.

What’s the easiest way to mute all tweets that include the picture of Alex Jones shirtless? Seriously, Twitter, I just ate lunch.

Lowlights from the genuinely execrable piece of journalism include Jones reverently referring to Trump as “some Hitler-like Führer” and screechable moments such as this:

He piles up food onto a plastic plate, and then he suddenly takes off his shirt without explanation. With his bare torso, he sits there and shovels meat into his mouth, a caricature of manliness, but also a show of power to the reporter sitting in front of him. He can do as he pleases.

Then Jones gets up and holds out a sausage. “Wanna suck?” he asks.

Which, HELP.

If only today’s intensely aggravating Amazon server crash hadn’t completely subsumed this story, but alas.

As a palette cleanser, watch Alex Jones talk about how juice boxes make you gay.

Teacher Bullied for Being Gay Came out to 1,000 Kids at Assembly

Teacher Bullied for Being Gay Came out to 1,000 Kids at Assembly

Daniel Gray gay teacher

A south London teacher took the step of coming out as gay at a school assembly to a thousand pupils at the Harris Academy South Norwood in Croydon.

Daniel Gray, 32, had himself been bullied as a schoolboy and recorded a video to coincide with LGBT History Month in which he shared his experience:

“I went through all the things the school was doing for LGBT History Month, and then I just said, ‘As a gay man, I know how important it is to have positive role models, and that’s why we’re doing this.’

I was so relieved when it was done, and then the response was just like ‘OK’ and a few people shrugged. Most people weren’t even bothered.”

Gray had not only been tormented by classmates for being gay before he himself had even fully been aware of his sexuality, but his supervisors advised him to keep it a secret from his students:

“I was told categorically when I started to train to be a teacher nine years ago not to come out to my students.

They said you don’t want to give them any more ammunition than they’ve already got, and that’s really a very depressing and very sad way of looking at it.

It’s assuming the students are out to get you.”

Gray had initially complied for several years, but increasingly became aware that students who, like he had, might be struggling for acceptance and understanding might want to an authority figure as a role model. His hunch paid off with the response he received:

After the assembly, a student who had never been taught by Daniel approached him to tell the teacher how it had changed his life.

Daniel said: “The fact that that opportunity was there for him, the fact that he doesn’t feel like he’s on his own any more I think is really, really powerful.”

Gray later shared his story with the BBC.
