Tom Hardy in Taboo on TV this week

Check out our weekly guide to TV this week, and make sure you’re catching the big premieres, crucial episodes and the stuff you won’t admit you watch when no one’s looking

Even though his full-frontal scenes were apparently cut, we’re still tuning in to Tom Hardy’s new intense drama Taboo, Tuesday at 10 p.m. Eastern on FX. The ruggedly handsome star plays a man out to reclaim his father’s shipping empire in 19th-Century London.

Out comedian Wanda Sykes channels her inner drag queen as she lip syncs for her life against actor Don Cheadle on a new episode of Lip Sync Battle Thursday at 10 p.m. Eastern on Spike.

Don’t confuse Netflix’s new adaption of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events with the mediocre movie starring Jim Carrey. This time Neil Patrick Harris steps into the role of Count Olaf as the show takes a sharper, slyer stab at the dark children’s comedy dropping Friday.

Who is this Cyndi Lauper, and why is she so unusual? Find out when the gay icon takes the stage on a new episode of Austin City Limits Saturday on PBS (check your local listings).

OK, get this, he’s the pope, but! He’s also sexy. That’s the pitch for HBO’s insane looking new drama The Young Pope starring Jude Law and Diane Keaton. The series, debuting Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern, follows the exploits of a pope that’s, you guessed it, not as old as other popes.

What are you watching this week on TV?

Michele Bachmann looks to Trump to reverse “evil” gay agenda

Michele Bachmann looks to Trump to reverse “evil” gay agenda

Former Congresswoman Michele Bachmann recently appeared on Family Research Council President Tony Perkins’ “Washington Watch” radio show, where she made known her support of Perkins’ call for President-elect Donald Trump to eliminate supporters of LGBTQ rights from the State Department.

The Trump transition team has already raised alarm bells with a memo sent to the Energy Department asking for the names of people who work on climate change, and another to the State Department looking for information on employees who have worked “to promote gender equality, such as ending gender-based violence, promoting women’s participation in economic and political spheres, entrepreneurship, etc.”

Perkins asserted that under President Obama “our government has been perverted to be used to advance an ungodly agenda” and “undermine American values both abroad and here at home.”

“How does the State Department, how does the United States government bless or curse?” Bachmann asked. “You brought it up yourself with the State Department, where we’ve seen such evil come out of our State Department, unfortunately, where financial incentives are withheld from countries unless they advance, for instance, the gay agenda.”

“In a country that doesn’t believe in the gay agenda but the Obama State Department has said, ‘You have to have a gay pride parade. You have to make sure that you can show us that ministers are marching in these gay pride parades.’” she claimed. “What? The U.S. government is telling another government that you have to have gay pride parades? That’s unbelievable. You won’t get your PEPFAR money, you won’t get your USAID money unless you follow our radical social agenda?”

PEPFAR stands for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, and is a United States government initiative to help combat HIV/AIDS worldwide. USAID funds go toward fighting poverty and for disaster relief initiatives abroad.

In the interview, Bachmann also cited debunked claims that Barack Obama intervened in an Israeli election in order to defeat the country’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, while insisting “Jewish people are so thrilled that Donald Trump is going to be the next president.”

Meryl Streep Golden Globes

Billy Eichner lashed out at Meghan McCain after the Republican pundit and daughter of Senator John McCain tweeted that “this Meryl Streep speech is why Trump won” and advised “people in Hollywood” to “start recognizing it.”

Responded Eichner:

“Um she asked him not to make fun of disabled people and advocated for the freedom of the press and the arts you f–king moron…”

This Meryl Streep speech is why Trump won. And if people in Hollywood don’t start recognizing why and how – you will help him get re-elected

.@billyeichner calling republicans like me “fucking morons” is a great way for Hollywood to bridge the cultural divide. Enjoy your bubble.

— Meghan McCain (@MeghanMcCain) January 9, 2017

.@MeghanMcCain I rather live in a bubble than live with people who don’t feel a need to respect the disabled, freedom of speech & the arts!!

And I have no desire to “bridge the cultural divide” with ignorant voters who don’t respect other cultures!

— billy eichner (@billyeichner) January 9, 2017

And now if you’ll excuse me I’m late for the Weinstein/Netflix party.

— billy eichner (@billyeichner) January 9, 2017

It doesn’t matter what Trump thinks of Meryl. What matters is he’s ignoring American intelligence agencies, which is a threat to our…

Football chairman wants closeted players to come out together as a group

Football chairman wants closeted players to come out together as a group

It sounds like the setup to a naughty movie, but it’s actually the goal of the chairman of the Football Association in England. Greg Clarke says he wants a whole bunch of “football” (what we call soccer, just to be difficult) players to to all come out of the closet at once this year.

It’s actually a really nice idea. It would mean that everyone would have a lot of support and help, and that fans would see just how many of their favorite players are queer. It would be particularly meaningful to LGBT fans.

Clarke was hesitant about recommending that players come out individually, because he is concerned about harassment in the organization that he runs. That’s kind of awful, but good for him for acknowledging a problem.

So what is he doing about it? Actually, a lot: he’s meeting with queer sports figures in private, and talking to players about what they want. (Nobody’s going to be forcibly outed.)

He’s also putting effort into welcoming black people into leadership roles — football/soccer teams have lagged somewhat in this area. Manager roles have historically disproportionately imbalanced along racial lines.

So for those of us capable of following along with British athletics, it’s an exciting time! It doesn’t make sense that players and managers wouldn’t reflect their fans, so changes like those Clarke is describing have been a long time coming.

Chuck Schumer Trolls Mitch McConnell with McConnell’s Own 2009 Letter Regarding Obama’s Nominations

Chuck Schumer Trolls Mitch McConnell with McConnell’s Own 2009 Letter Regarding Obama’s Nominations

McConnell

As we reported earlier, Senate confirmation hearings are scheduled this week for a slate of Trump’s presidential nominees including Jeff Sessions, John Kelly, Rex Tillerson, Mike Pompeo, Betsy DeVos, Elaine Chao, Andrew Puzder, and James Mattis, many of whom have not completed the ethics review process.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer fired a preemptive letter to Mitch McConnell regarding the process – the letter was McConnell’s own, sent to Harry Reid in February 2009, shortly after Barack Obama had taken office.

Read it:

Our requests are eminently reasonable, shared by leaders of both parties. I’ll return this letter to @SenateMajLdr with the same requests. pic.twitter.com/IMT7ZtJFjV
