NEW MUSIC: the xx, Of Montreal, Declan McKenna, Diet Cig

the xx

This week in New Music: the xx glacier begins to melt on album number three, a surprise EP release from Of Montreal, teen rock rebellion by Declan McKenna on “The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home” and classic indie guitar rock from Diet Cig,

the xx – “Say Something Loving”

the xxOn album number three, the xx (above and right) appear to be expanding their sound from the dark, insular production evident on earlier work. In fact, the album opens with a horn fanfare which is jarring enough for fans that they might think they clicked play on The 1975 in error.

Not to worry though, this is the xx through and through.

The album opens with “Dangerous” – an upbeat track continuing with the horn theme – and is followed by “Say Something Loving,” the closest the trio of childhood best mates have ever come to a pop song and it really is wonderful.

There would appear to be an actual theme running through the album as suggested by it’s title. It’s all about intimacy and expectation but not just sex. It’s also not an album of love songs, closing as it does with piano-led track “Test Me” on which Romy Madley Croft worries “you look but you never see, let’s take it out on me, it’s easier than saying what you mean, test me – see if I break, tell me if this time you’ve changed.”

While the sound remains aloof and glacial, the detachment of youth is slowly warming.

Happily, the first big album of 2017 is one of the best in many months.

Of Montreal – Rune Husk

of_montrealLast week, Of Montreal surprise-released a new EP Rune Husk.

The four tracks see Kevin Barnes in perhaps slightly more introspective mood than on last album Innocence Reaches. In the sense at least as introspective as he can manage.

“Stag to the Stable” is practically glam rock. “Widowsucking” is a classic Of Montreal hot mess. “Island Life” is creepy brilliance that might make your skin crawl.

In other words, brilliant.

As the EP doesn’t appear to be available anywhere online, have a listen to “Let’s Relate” from last year’s Innocence Reaches below.

Declan McKenna – “The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home”

Declan-mckennaFor his 18th birthday, English indie rock rebel Declan McKenna released a clarion call of nonconformity to the youth of today.

While there is nothing particularly original about the song – and compared with earlier tracks like “Isombard” it’s actually a bit standard – McKenna has that one trick up his sleeve that makes him stand out: he’s a teen calling on a generation with old-school rock ‘n roll.

So, while it’s not original, understanding its appeal to the youth of today is easy because every generation needs a rebel (of sorts).

Have a listen to the track and the brilliant “Isombard” as performed on Later With Jools Holland below.

Diet Cig – “Tummy Ache”

diet-cigDiet Cig is Alex Luciano (guitar and vocals) and Noah Bowman (drums). The duo have just announced the release of their debut album, the brilliantly titled Swear I’m Good at This this coming April.

With the rawness of the music, Bowman’s plaintive vocals, the wash of feedback and the thumping beats, lead track “Tummy Ache” is an instant blast of classic indie rock along the lines of Haley Bonar.

Building slowly to a thumping climax, the song closes out with Bowman rightly reminding us that “It’s hard to be a punk when you’re wearing a skirt.”

Have a listen below.

Masseur arrested in strangling death of gay NYC club owner

Masseur arrested in strangling death of gay NYC club owner

The 400-pound former owner of Escuelita, a legendary Latin gay nightclub in midtown that closed last February, was killed by 23-year-old Daquan King, a masseur who engaged in “weird” consensual sex with 54-year-old Savyon Zabar (right).

According to police, King confessed to the January 3rd killing on Friday. The New York Post reports he’d been considered the prime suspect before coming forward.

On the morning of January 4, his two roommates walked into their West 81st Street apartment and found Zabar face-up and unconscious.

According to sources, “he was sobbing the whole time” during his confession:

He said it started out with him massaging the victim. The massage led to them fooling around. They were doing weird sex stuff. And that led to them choking each other.”

The encounter apparently “ended with the perp choking the victim a little too hard and he heard the victim gurgling. He was so freaked out, he left.”

Escuelita was located on West 39th Street, but closed in February.

At the time, a notice on their website thanked patrons for the last 49 years and said “it’s time to say goodbye for now.”

Unlocking Key West: The Must-See Spots for 5 Kinds of Gay Travelers

Unlocking Key West: The Must-See Spots for 5 Kinds of Gay Travelers

key west gay travel spots

These days, it feels like we all need a little getaway. Sure, you could use your precious PTO to jetset to a foreign city or embark on an international adventure, but there’s one destination all LGBT travelers should consider before stressing out about renewing their passports.

Whether you’re looking to treat your tastebuds or immerse yourself in a little extra queer culture, consider setting up your travel alerts for Key West, Florida. With the motto “One Human Family,” Key West is a haven for queer travelers of all types, no matter what sort of vacation you’re after.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip to The Conch Republic, here are a few suggestions to start your planning based on whatever you’re looking for.

Local Pride Seekers
Like Fire Island and Provincetown, Key West is a popular enclave for the LGBT community. Gay male travelers shouldn’t pass up a stay at Island House, an all-male, clothing-optional resort that boasts a daily happy hour featuring free top-shelf liquor for guests. You could find pools and hot tubs at any guesthouse, but Island House also has TVs with free adult films and a video room to boot. Don’t go expecting sleaze, though. Glowing reviews praise the laid-back vibe, cleanliness and 24/7 food service. Make sure you leave room in your itinerary for La Te Da’s weekly tea dance, Sundays at 4 p.m. Visitors can mix and mingle with out-of-towners and locals alike at this poolside party. For something a bit more educational, dive into Key West’s long, gay history at the free Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit. This collection of memorabilia celebrates the playwright’s life and work.

Foodies
Although Key West might not be regarded as a culinary capital in the same way one might label New York or San Francisco, the unique cuisine is a reflection of the Caribbean culture. On the higher end, there’s Café Solé, where the French expertise of Chef John Correa is put to work on local seafood and flavors. If you’re looking to keep it light, try The Café, a mostly vegetarian and vegan spot that helps you feel a bit less bloated when your lounging poolside in your speedo (or less). Just be sure you make at least one stop at the artisanal Glazed Donuts before you depart, even if it’s en route to the airport home after the swimsuit has been safely tucked away.

Art Lovers
Find the perfect piece to adorn your walls among any of Key Wests 30+ art galleries. If your taste in visual art leans more contemporary, try Lucky Street Gallery or Harrison Gallery. If bad weather threatens to rain on your vacation’s parade, see what’s going up at the esteemed Waterfront Playhouse. Upcoming productions include Avenue Q, Good People and Forever Plaid. Or, you can grab a popcorn and catch a flick at the gorgeous Tropic Cinema.

History Buffs
The rich history of Key West is obvious strolling down any street. Visitors can step right into Ernest Hemingway’s home and try to find the penny he pressed into the wet concrete as he allegedly protested construction costs, yelling “Here, take the last penny I’ve got!” You can get to know other prominent Key Westers at the Key West Historic Memorial Sculpture Garden where bronze busts portray influential men and women from the island’s history. Take another look at history at Key West Cemetery, which is not as dark as it sounds. Many of the gravestones are known for their quirky inscriptions, including “I told you I was sick,” “I’ll always remember my so-called friends” and “Devoted Fan of Singer Julio Iglesias.”

Family-Friendly
For those traveling with their modern family in tow, there are plenty of (fully-clothed, wholesome) activities to be enjoyed by all ages. The Key West Aquarium — which was the first open-air aquarium when it was completed in 1935 but added a roof in the ‘60s to cut down on algae — is home to sharks, stingrays, turtles, fish and more. When you’ve had your fill of aquatic animals, swing by Nancy Forrester’s Secret Garden, an educational sanctuary for parrots. Families can also get a good grip on Old Town Key West on the Conch Tour Train, a 90-minute tour including stops in Station Depot, Truval Village and Flagler Station. Plus, kids ride free.

Scott Pruitt is on the frontlines in the fight against transgender people in America

Scott Pruitt is on the frontlines in the fight against transgender people in America

All eyes may be on Tom Price’s confirmation hearing this morning, but there’s another anti-LGBTQ nominee who is facing his own hearing to be the next Secretary of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). His name is Scott Pruitt, and his record is a dangerous one.

While serving as Oklahoma’s Attorney General, Scott Pruitt has been on the frontlines in the fight to oppose the federal government’s guidance that allows transgender students to use public school facilities that correspond to their gender identity.  From calling the guidance an “overreach” to saying it was “violative to common sense,” Scott Pruitt’s consistent opposition has made headlines all last year. Pruitt’s stance is out of touch, factually wrong, and further amplifies discrimination against transgender people.

But Scott Pruitt’s stance isn’t unique among incoming appointees of President-elect Donald Trump. In fact, his positions put him in good company with the many other anti-LGBTQ nominees within the Trump Administration, including Betsy DeVos, Congressman Tom Price, and Vice President-elect Mike Pence. Check out their records here

The Pruitt Record: On the Frontlines Against Transgender Equality

Pruitt Told Anti-LGBTQ Activist Tony Perkins That The Obama Administration’s Guidance On Transgender Equality Is “So Objectionable And So Violative Of Common Sense.” [Audio] (Comments begin at 28:25.)

In a Letter to the Obama Administration, Pruitt Claimed the New Guidance on Transgender Students was an “Overreach.” “We believe that your actions today are unlawful and that they represent the most egregious administrative overreach to date. You have taken a public policy issue that must, by our constitutional design, be worked out in the laboratory of democracy and enforced it on all people. And you have done so through a misuse of the spending power.” [Office of the Oklahoma Attorney General, [5.13.16]

Following His Letter, Pruitt Joined a Lawsuit Seeking to Block the Guidance for Transgender Students. “Pruitt, on the state’s behalf, joined 10 other states on Wednesday in filing a lawsuit to block implementation of Obama administration guidance on school policy regarding transgender students’ use of restrooms, locker rooms and other facilities typically separated by gender. The lawsuit was filed the day after legislation addressing the issue failed in a House of Representatives committee. On Thursday, the House passed by unanimous consent a resolution supporting Pruitt’s lawsuit against what it calls a ‘blatant example of federal government and executive power overreach.’” [Tulsa World, 5.26.16]

For more information on the incoming Trump Administration’s appointees, as well as those who may be in consideration to join his team, visit the Trump Accountability Project. And if you’d like to be involved to take additional action, you can join GLAAD’s grassroots Rapid Response Team. Together, we can fight back and make a difference.  I hope you’ll join us.

WATCH: Bright Light Bright Light teams up once again with Sir Elton John for “Running Back To You”

Rod Thomas leaps another grand jete towards total world domination.

The Welsh mastermind behind electro-pop outfit Bright Light Bright Light once again teams up with Sir Elton John for “Running Back To You,” the bouncy new single from his 2015 album Choreography. (The artists have collaborated before, most recently on last year’s excellent “All In The Name” single.)

While “Running Back To You” initially bears the trappings of a torchy power ballad, it quickly erupts into an exuberant toe-tapper, and the video spares absolutely no expense on shimmying backup dancers and sparklers. Subtly would be a wasted opportunity, anyway.

NFL: We Haven’t Told Lady Gaga She Can’t Talk Trump or Politics Ahead of Super Bowl

Lady Gaga Super Bowl

The NFL today denied reports that it had imposed a gag order on Lady Gaga, barring her from talking about politics ahead of her Super Bowl halftime performance.

CNN reports:

“It’s false,” Natalie Ravitz, senior vice president of communications for the NFL told CNN. “This is unsourced nonsense from people trying to stir up controversy where there is none. The Super Bowl is a time when people really come together. Lady Gaga is focused on putting together an amazing show for fans and we love working with her on it; we aren’t going to be distracted by this.”

Representatives for Lady Gaga confirmed the NFL’s statement.

Entertainment Tonight had reported on the alleged gag order:

A source close to the halftime show tells ET, “Lady Gaga was told by the NFL that she cannot say anything or bring anything up about the election, or mention Donald Trump.”

ET adds:

As for a report that Gaga is plotting a potentially dangerous performance, aiming to sing from the roof of Houston’s NRG Stadium, ET’s source says that speculation about cutting a hole in the roof are inaccurate.

“The roof at NRG Stadium is retractable,” they said, “so I’m not sure why they would need to cut a hole in the roof.”

Regarding the rumors, a representative for the NFL said: “People will have to wait and see what we have in store – we never comment on speculation about the show because there is so much misinformation that surfaces. But we are confident Lady Gaga will put on a tremendous show for fans.”

Pepsi shared a behind the scenes of the halftime show on Tuesday:
