New Episodes of ‘The Magicians,’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Riverdale’ and More On TV This Week

The Magicians season two and more TV this week.

Check out our weekly guide to TV this week, and make sure you’re catching the big premieres, crucial episodes and the stuff you won’t admit you watch when no one’s looking.

Do you believe in magic? Neither do we (at least not while you-know-who is in the White House). In the meantime, a boy could dream, right? Check out the season two premiere of The Magicians, a sort of edgier Hogwarts gone wild, including gay student Eliot (Hale Appleman). The new season bows Wednesday at 9 p.m. on Syfy.

All aboard for Shondaland. The TV mastermind’s Thursday night programming is back with new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder starting at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC.

The CW drops their dark, creepy take on the Archie series starring former child star Cole Sprouse, and, honestly, I’m too old to understand almost anything going on. The brooding and the beautiful debut of Riverdale is Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern.

Pay homage to the late, great Debbie Reynolds with an all-day salute to the beloved screen legend Friday on Turner Classic Movies. Tune in at 6 p.m. Eastern to catch one of Reynolds’ best-known performances in the 1952 movie musical Singin’ In the Rain.

Award season barrels along with the Screen Actors Guild Awards getting handed out Sunday at 8 p.m. Eastern on TBS and TNT. Expect to see stars from critical darlings, including La La Land, Moonlight, Manchester By the Sea and Hidden Figures. Among the television series up for awards, the nominees include actors from Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, This Is Us and more.

What are you watching this week on TV?

Fresh off the heels from winning a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama, MOONLIGHT, the coming of age story of an inner city black queer youth, today received eight Oscar® nominations, including one for Best Picture.

Mahershala Ali and MoonlightOthers noms for MOONLIGHT include Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing and Original Score. Individual nominations included: Barry Jenkins for Best Director, Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor and Naomie Harris for Best Supporting Actress.  While other LGBTQ films have garnered major individual honors, MOONLIGHT is notable for the number of nominations acquired within a single year within the Academy’s history. The last LGBTQ film to receive eight nominations was the Harvey Milk biopic MILK (2008), which took home two statuettes:  Best Original Screenplay for Dustin Lance Black and Best Actor for Sean Penn.

Immediately following the announcements, GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis tweeted:

U.S. films reach audiences around the world. The global impact of inclusive and diverse stories is massive and changes hearts and minds.

Ruth Negga was nominated (Best Actress) for her strong and focused performance in LOVING, the story behind the Supreme Court decision that many say paved the way for marriage equality. The Documentary Feature category also featured a diverse group of nominees, including I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO, 13th, and OJ: MADE IN AMERICA.

In an early morning announcement, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs was joined by several Oscar®-winning and nominated Academy members including Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Emmanuel Lubezki, Jason Reitman and Ken Watanabe to reveal the 89th Oscars® nominations, a departure from their tradition of doing so in front of a live audience.  This year’s nominations were announced via a global live stream at the Academy’s online site, on their digital platforms, via local broadcasters and on morning television programs.

Jimmy Kimmel hosting OscarsHosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Academy Awards will air live on ABC at 5:30 pm PT / 8:30 pm ET on Sunday, February 26. Though the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” star has hosted several major awards shows in the past, this will be his first time hosting the Academy Awards.  A full listing of all of the 2017 Academy Award nominees can be found here.

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton was delivering his ‘State of the State’ speech on Monday night when he began to slur his words and collapsed. The meeting was adjourned.

CNN reports that he will make the address again this morning at 11:15 am CT.

He briefly resumed speaking — touting the success of the Affordable Care Act and MNSure, the state’s health care marketplace — before he slumped onto the lectern. Video of the State of the State speech shows aides rushing to catch Dayton as he sinks toward the floor.

…Patrick Kessler, a reporter for CNN affiliate WCCO, tweeted that Dayton was conscious and “joking with paramedics.”Dayton “quickly recovered, walked out of the Capitol and returned home” to spend time with his son and grandson, Tincher said.

I’m with my dad now and he’s doing great. Thank you all for your kind well-wishes and words of concern.
