House GOP Reverses Plan to Kill Office of Congressional Ethics

House GOP Reverses Plan to Kill Office of Congressional Ethics

Bob Goodlatte ethics office

House Republicans decided not to kill the Office of Congressional Ethics as a first order of business following bipartisan pressure to do so, the NYT reports:

The reversal came less than 24 hours after House Republicans, meeting in a secret session, voted, over the objections of Speaker Paul D. Ryan, to eliminate the independent ethics office. It was created in 2009 in the aftermath of a series of scandals involving House lawmakers, including three who were sent to jail.

Mr. Trump criticized House Republicans on Tuesday for their move to gut the office, saying they should focus instead on domestic policy priorities such as health care and a tax overhaul.

Was Mariah Carey’s disasterous NYE performance sabotaged for good TV ratings?

Was Mariah Carey’s disasterous NYE performance sabotaged for good TV ratings?

The fact that we can even have this debate is so indicative of where we are as a culture — have television producers sunk even lower by intentionally messing with Mimi’s performance setup, thereby ensuring the ratings gold mine of a star falling, once again, from her perch in the heavens?

That’s certainly the story Mariah Carey’s camp is going with, after her performance on “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” left something large to the imagination (like singing). Her mic pac seemed to be of no use as background tracks for hits like “Emotions” and “We Belong Together” attempted to guide the stream, and yet the camera just stayed plastered on the singer, waiting for her to act.

Ms. Carey’s manager, Stella Bulochnikov, believes the show’s producers were fully aware of the technical problems but chose to leave them broken — and then decided to continue recording Ms. Carey’s messy performance “to get ratings.”

“I will never know the truth, but I do know that we told them three times that her mike pack was not working and it was a disastrous production,” Ms. Bulochnikov told Us Weekly on Sunday. “I’m certainly not calling the F.B.I. to investigate. It is what it is: New Year’s Eve in Times Square. Mariah did them a favor. She was the biggest star there, and they did not have their” act together.

Dick Clark Productions, of course, clapped back that any such accusations are “defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd.”

emmie-smith gender reassignment surgery

Trans teen Emmie Smith (above, with mom Kate) allowed National Geographic to film an intimate and moving video diary of her gender reassignment surgery process.

17-year-old Emmie invited National Geographic photographer Lynn Johnson as she underwent surgery in order to “demystify the procedure by documenting it, close-up and unflinching.”

Emmie came out on Facebook 18 months before the surgery, a process she had not previously considered.

Emmie’s family, including identical twin Caleb and mother Kate, an Episcopal reverend, were entirely supportive of Emmie.

Following the surgery, Emmie said she did not feel any immediate relief. It wasn’t until months later she knew she’d made the right choice. “If you’re not living freely that’s time wasted, and I felt my time was wasted pretending to be a boy,” she says. “It was the best decision in my life.”

National Geographic reports:

Her mother, Reverend Kate Malin, is a prominent figure in their Massachusetts town, and her identical twin sons Caleb and Walker were familiar fixtures at her Episcopal church. A month after Walker came out as Emmie, Malin stepped out from behind her pulpit and walked into the aisle. Halfway through her sermon she decided it was time to address the change in her family.

“As most of you know, Bruce and I have three children,” she began. “Caleb and Walker, who are 17, and 13-year-old Owen. Walker’s new name is Emerson, and she prefers Emmie or Em. She’s wearing feminine clothing and makeup and will likely continue to move in the direction of a more feminized body.”

Kate nervously revealed her struggle to the attentive New England crowd. “I feel broken much of the time,” she confessed. “I’ve wanted to run away, and I’ve prayed for this child that I would gladly die for, guilty for how much I miss the person I thought was Walker and everything I thought might be.”

After the sermon, the congregation engulfed her in a hug. Then they moved to offer words of support to the sandy-haired 17-year-old sitting in the pews. In the first of many awkward mistakes the family would later laugh about, it was Caleb—Emmie’s identical twin.

Help! I’m a kind, gentle, open-minded straight guy, but my girlfriend’s a total homophobe

Help! I’m a kind, gentle, open-minded straight guy, but my girlfriend’s a total homophobe

straight-couple-fighting

Here’s a narrative you don’t hear every day. A straight man is struggling with how to handle his girlfriend’s homophobia, so he’s asking Dear Abby for help.

“I have been dating a wonderful girl for about seven months,” his letter begins. “She’s sweet, kind, extraordinarily talented, and we treat each other wonderfully. Everything has been great, with the occasional disagreement.”

There’s just one problem.

“I’m starting to notice that she seems to be homophobic,” the man says. He explains that he was raised in a “liberal, open-minded home” but his girlfriend’s was “much more conservative.”

“She never met a homosexual until college,” he writes. “She has talked about feeling uncomfortable with two men kissing or talking about being intimate. … When I tell her that I support marriage equality and the LGBTQ community, she gets very quiet and uneasy.”

“I don’t know if I can be with someone who’s this uncomfortable about homosexuality,” he says. “What do you think I should do?”

Well, Abby isn’t having any of this girlfriend’s homophobic foolishness.

“She may be a wonderful girl,” she responds, “but whether you are wonderful for each other is open to question.”

“Try to project ahead,” she continues. “If the two of you were to marry and she was unable to overcome her aversion to gay people, to what extent would it limit your ability to interact with them? Or their ability to have a relationship with you?”

Ultimately, Abby says, “if she’s able to evolve with more exposure. If she’s not, then she may not be the one for you.”

Say Something Loving: Listen to the New Track from ‘The xx’

The xx say something loving

British band The xx released a new promotional single on January 1 called “Say Something Loving” which is a sentiment all of us could use more of these days.

Rolling Stone reports:

The track samples the Alessi Brothers’ 1978 track “Do You Feel It?” and spotlights the vocal interplay of singers Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft, as well as Croft’s sparse yet trademark guitar playing.

“You say something loving / It’s so overwhelming, the thrill of affection / Feels so unfamiliar / You say something loving,” the singers exclaim on the infectious chorus. “Without hesitation it hits me, hits me / It feels so unfamiliar.”
