국립국어원에 의하면, 아가씨는 ‘시집갈 나이의 여자를 이르거나 부르는 말’ 이고, 아줌마는 아주머니를 낮추어 이르는 말로 ‘결혼한 여자를 예사롭게 이르거나 부르는 말’ 이다. 아가씨와 아줌마의 경계선에는 바로 결혼이라는 제도가 있었던 것이다. 참고로 총각은 ‘결혼하지 않은 성년 남자’를 말하지만 아저씨는 ‘성인 남자를 예사롭게 이르거나 부르는 말’이라고 한다. 그러니까 아저씨는 아주머니와는 달리 결혼 여부가 포함되지 않은 것이다.

HATE. Dylann Roof convicted in Charleston Church shooting case: “A jury in Charleston, S.C., has found Dylann Roof guilty on all 33 counts of federal hate crimes he faced for murdering nine people and attempting to kill three others in the basement of a historically black church. As the sentence was read, Roof stood emotionless, reported Alexandra Olgin of South Carolina Public Radio, who was in the courtroom. The charges included murder, attempted murder, damage to religious property, obstruction of religious belief and weapons charges.”
NORTH CAROLINA. As Republican state legislators strip incoming Governor-elect Roy Cooper of power because they lost, protestors show up at state house and get arrested: “Right now, police are arresting protestors in the state house who are calling the Republicans’ actions a veritable coup. Among those arrested is a local city council person.”
WAY OF THE DODO. Are Indianapolis’s gay bars headed for extinction? “Since 2015 at least five have closed their doors in Indianapolis, about half the city’s total. Among the casualties: the venerable Varsity, the city’s oldest gay bar, dating back to the 1940s. In the past six months Talbott Street, long-known for its drag shows, closed, as did the 501 Eagle, a bar favored by leather enthusiasts since 1986.”

D.C. night club receives threats after refusing to host “Deploraball” for white supremacists
The tables have turned on antigay radicals who want the legal right to discriminate against people based on their personal religious beliefs. They’ve suddenly found themselves on the receiving end of that sort of treatment, and–guess what?–they don’t like it!
The Clarendon Ballroom is a popular private event venue in Arlington, VA that regularly hosts concerts, galas, and weddings. Last week, the club’s operations director Adrianne Freshman was contacted by a man who said he wanted to throw a party for a group called The Citizens for Trump. Freshman sent the man a proposal and the two spoke over the phone. No contract was signed and no money was exchanged.

Days later, Freshmen learned that the “Citizens for Trump” party was actually being thrown by a hate group called The Deplorables, which is run by white supremacist Mike Cernovich, a man deemed by The New Yorker as ““the meme mastermind of the alt-right.” They had billed the event as “The DeploraBall.” But not just that, they had also already sold 500 tickets, despite not actually securing the venue.
After learning all this, Freshman contacted Cernovich and politely backed out of hosting the event. And that’s when things got messy.
Cernovich retaliated by posting a 26 minute video to Twitter accusing the ballroom of discrimination and giving into pressure from forces opposed to Donald Trump.
“The Clarendon Ballroom is not going to host it,” he hissed. “They caved to left-wing harassment!”
Then he showed what appears to be a proposal from Clarendon Ballroom. He did not, however, show a signed contract. (Because he never signed one!)

Shortly after that, Freshman began receiving threats by phone and email.
“I have literally spent my entire day blocking people and deleting hundreds of slanderous, dangerous, vulgar and threatening posts and tweets, answering threatening phone calls and watching my first ever Twitter War,” he told media in an email.
The venue’s Yelp and Facebook pages was also bombarded with negative reviews, many from people who live states away:
We can’t help but wonder if this is a precursor for what is to come. Are we now going to see white supremacists and other hate groups suing liberal and pro-LGBTQ businesses?

Openly Gay South Bend, Indiana Mayor Considering Run for DNC Chair – WATCH
Pete Buttigieg, the openly gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is considering a run for chair of the Democratic National Committee.
A Harvard graduate, and military veteran who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan, Buttigieg came out in 2015 in an op-ed.
As the DNC race has continued in the wake of Donald Trump’s election, influential members of the Democratic Party began reaching out to Buttigieg, encouraging him to run.
On Thursday, former DNC Chair Howard Dean said on MSNBC that he met with Buttigieg on Wednesday and was impressed by him and resumé.
Politico reports:“I know that he’s taken phone calls from [DNC] members. I think he’s doing more listening than talking, primarily,” said a top Indiana Democrat. “My understanding is he’s listening and thinking about it.” […]
“I’ve been talking with a number of fellow local and state leaders from around the country about the future direction of the Democratic Party,” Buttigieg wrote Tuesday in an email to POLITICO, when asked if he is planning to run for DNC chair. “I am staying focused on South Bend, but I do care deeply about where our country is headed. It’s clear the party needs to connect better with communities like my hometown, where working people are looking for economic fairness and for leadership that focuses on our shared values.”
Buttigieg did not respond to followup questions about his interest but Democrats familiar with the mayor’s thinking say he’s received encouragement in and outside his state about running and is taking that support seriously.

Harvard University-educated, a Rhodes Scholar and a U.S. Navy Reserve officer, Buttigieg became the youngest mayor of a U.S. city with more than 100,000 residents when he took office at age 30 in 2012.
Last year, he publicly announced he was gay in a newspaper op-ed following the firestorm over Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act and in advance of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling recognizing same-sex marriages.
This year, New York Times opinion columnist Frank Bruni wrote about Buttigieg under the headline “The First Gay President?”
WNDU adds:“He’s this guy in Indiana, right in the heart of where they say the Democratic Party struggles the most, but Mayor Pete Buttigieg is succeeding,” commented [St. Joseph County Democratic Party Chairman Jason] Critchlow.
Currently, Donna Brazile serves as the interim head of the Democratic National Committee. She took over the party when Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz stepped down in July amid an e-mail hack, suggesting the DNC preferred Hillary Clinton as the presidential nominee.

HRC Hails Appointments of Catherine Lhamon and Debo Adegbile to U.S. Commission on Civil Rights
Today HRC hailed President Obama’s appointment of Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon and attorney Debo P. Adegbile to six-year terms on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
The bipartisan, independent Commission on Civil Rights is charged with advising the development of civil rights policy and enhancing enforcement of federal nondiscrimination statutes. It routinely holds hearings and issues reports on the interpretation and enforcement of U.S. civil rights laws. Recently, the Commission endorsed efforts by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice ensuring that transgender students are treated with dignity in public and federally-funded schools, and this month issued a statement expressing deep concern over the troubling increase in hate crimes in the U.S.
“Catherine Lhamon and Debo Adegbile have dedicated their careers to defending and strengthening our civil rights laws,” said Sarah Warbelow, HRC’s Legal Director. “As the Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights, Catherine Lhamon worked with educators and administrators across the country to ensure that transgender students were granted equal protection from discrimination in our nation’s schools and colleges. And from advocacy to litigation, Debo Adegbile has fought to protect the promise of our civil and voting rights laws in courthouses, at the Supreme Court, and on Capitol Hill.”
“Their commitment to the full enforcement of our civil rights statutes make Catherine Lhamon and Debo Adegbile preeminently qualified to serve on the commission tasked with protecting the rights enshrined in many of our nation’s most cherished laws,” Warbelow continued.
As Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights, Catherine Lhamon has worked to improve the way college campuses combat sexual assault and ensure life-saving protections for transgender students. Before serving as Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights, Lhamon served as Director of Impact Litigation at Public Counsel, and earlier worked at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.
Debo P. Adegbile is a partner at the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, LLP. Adegbile served as Senior Counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, and as Acting President and Director-Counsel, among other positions, at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. Adegbile has argued multiple times before the U.S. Supreme Court, including in a 2008 defense of the Voting Rights Act.

The series was directed by Alter Sin.
