Oakland Space Described As “Genderqueer” Oasis Before Fire That Killed At Least 31

Oakland Space Described As “Genderqueer” Oasis Before Fire That Killed At Least 31

Spaces like this are the only way we have any sort of viable arts scene where anyone is making any money. There is virtually [no other] option for a thriving performance space in this city without occupying these spaces. [They also] offer the most support of trans and genderqueer folks. That’s a large part of what last night should have been about, what it started out about. That group of people is totally sidelined in the dominant nightlife culture of a gentrifying Oakland.

–Juliet Gordon, 26, who fronts the pop band The Classical, was a denizen of the Ghost Ship, as the warehouse was known to local artists and musicians, as quoted in the SFChronicle

Mykki Blanco Loner

Rapper Mykki Blanco called out YouTube after the video-sharing site removed his video “Loner” over a male underwear bulge. The video has since been restored to the site.

Why is Queer sexuality censored & policed but images for a Cis male gaze of sexualized women are not ? @YouTube pic.twitter.com/JSH7pc3YVt

— MYKKI (@MykkiBlanco) December 2, 2016

Billboard reports:

As Blanco and others were quick to point out, there are many videos on YouTube that show just as much or more explicit material but are acceptable because they align with heterosexual standards of sexuality.

“Why is Queer sexuality censored & policed but images for a Cis male gaze of sexualized women are not ?” Blanco tweeted.

Blanco also said there had been a “social media produced comment thread” where someone said the video had an image of a male “scrotum” — an erroneous claim.

“Our society grants hetero privilege to parade overly sexualized images of women for a cis male gaze yet Queer imagery is policied, demeaned,” Blanco tweeted.

Now the video is back online but with a “content warning” that requires viewers to sign in to confirm their age before viewing.

Watch “Loner”:

In September, Blanco called out the music industry for placing a glass ceiling on queer artists:

“I don’t care what anyone says, I’m in the industry and I know how homophobic the industry is. [Young gay musicians are] having this moment. I still wonder if the industry is going to give them a glass ceiling, you know? I think Troye Sivan is so fucking talented, but is the industry gonna let him be as big as a Bieber? As big as a Zayn Malik? Because he definitely deserves to. He definitely has the makings of that, but is the industry still gonna keep queer artists under this glass ceiling?”

Hey misery merchants, let’s be sad! Check out Idina Menzel’s cover of “Wind Beneath My Wings” for the ill-advised Lifetime Channel remake of 1988 sniffle-inducer Beaches. Who knows? Maybe she’ll pull through this time.

Donald Trump was ruthlessly mocked in Saturday Night Live‘s cold open last night, which shone a light on the disturbing news that the President-Elect is ignoring vital intelligence briefings in lieu of spending time blocking and retweeting random people on Twitter.

It also mocked him for bragging that in just 25 days since the election he has already solved the problems of unemployment and healthcare, “and Osama bin Laden is dead.”

To which Kate McKinnon’s Kellyanne Conway aptly notes:

“Yes, he is dead. Just like my soul and all of my hair.”

Baldwin’s Trump also mistakes himself for a plate of mashed potatoes.

Trump’s dinner with Mitt Romney also comes up.

“Do I have to? … Well then can I at least have a picture of us together where he looks like a little bitch?”

Trump was watching. And Baldwin offered to stop the mockery if Trump releases his tax returns…

@realDonaldTrump

Release your tax returns and I’ll stop.
