WNBA's Brittney Griner Files To Annul Marriage To Fellow WNBA Player

WNBA's Brittney Griner Files To Annul Marriage To Fellow WNBA Player
PHOENIX (AP) — Brittney Griner filed for an annulment with Glory Johnson-Griner on Friday, a day after Johnson-Griner announced she’s pregnant and a month after the two WNBA players were married.

“Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage, Griner said in a statement. “I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment. In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.” Griner, the 6-foot-8 Phoenix Mercury star, married Johnson-Griner on May 9, three weeks after they were arrested in Arizona on domestic violence charges for a fight at their home in suburban Phoenix. Both players were suspended seven games after their arrests and Griner agreed to undergo 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling as part of a plea agreement.

Both players apologized for the incident and said they worked out their differences, saying they were happy about the marriage. Johnson-Griner, a two-time All-Star with the Tulsa Shock, announced on Instagram on Thursday that she was pregnant and would miss the WNBA season.

Earlier Friday, a post on Johnson-Griner’s Instagram account showed a photo of Griner and a message about seeing her again: “One day until I’m reunited with my Wife @brittneygriner . . . This is about to be one CRAZY SUMMER!!!”

Griner has appealed her suspension and Johnson-Griner’s will not start until the 2016 season because she will not play this season.

Griner was the WNBA’s defensive player of the year and helped the Mercury win the league championship last season.

The WNBA season started Friday night, with the Mercury opening defense of their title at home against the San Antonio Stars.

Transgender Heroes, Yes!

Transgender Heroes, Yes!
On Sunday afternoon, I’m going to a memorial service. The memorial service is for a friend, a teacher who wanted the best for her students, an amazing person. She was brave and courageous and beautiful. She was transgender. My friend knew some very hateful people for over 10 years who made her daily life miserable, and she ultimately took her life. No one was able to do anything to stop the hateful suffering she endured. There is a lack of understanding and acceptance in the United States for transgender people. There aren’t strong legal protections in place and many lack understanding. Making jokes or bigoted remarks about transgender people is often accepted.

Young transgender people are in the news every day because they are harassed and discriminated against and often end up taking their own lives or being hurt, or even murdered.

Anyone can do a quick search to find the horrifying statistics about transgender youth:

  • 33 percent of transgender youth have attempted suicide
  • 55 percent of transgender youth report being physically attacked
  • 74 percent of transgender youth reported being sexually harassed at school,
  • 90 percent of transgender youth reported feeling unsafe at school because of their gender expression
  • 78 percent reported having been verbally harassed
  • 48 percent reported having been victims of assault, including assault with a weapon, sexual assault or rape

And for adults it often gets worse.

It is not Caitlyn’s responsibility to educate misguided people about transgender people. She didn’t choose to be transgender. She did choose, however, to tell her story knowing that she will likely be the target of hate. Even so, she is courageously engaging people who don’t understand and unintentionally say hurtful things. Caitlyn Jenner is creating awareness by giving another voice to transgender people. It takes courage and bravery to talk even though she knows that she will likely be ridiculed and worse. There have been many before her and there will be many more, but right now Caitlyn Jenner is using her celebrity to do make a difference.

As I read about people criticizing social media for calling Caitlyn Jenner a hero, I think of my friend and all she went through. A hero is someone who puts other lives before their own. A hero can come in many forms. Caitlyn is doing a small part to change stereotypes and bigotry against transgender people, after all, you’re reading this, aren’t you? I promise you, Caitlyn’s story is saving lives. Caitlyn Jenner is a hero.

Why Do You Sound So Gay? Tim Gunn, Dan Savage and Don Lemon Try To Explain

“How and when did I learn to sound gay?” filmmaker David Thorpe asks in the new trailer for his documentary Do I Sound Gay?

It’s a question we have all asked each other at some point. (Who hasn’t hear the quip, “When she opens her mouth, a purse falls out!”)

In theaters and VOD July 10, the film examines the phenomenon of “gay voice” and the cultural baggage surrounding it. Through interviews with Tim Gunn, David Sedaris, Don Lemon, Dan Savage and George Takei, Thorpe tackles the topic of what it means to “sound gay” and, in fact, be gay.

An 'Orange Is The New Black' And 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' Crossover Needs To Happen
Sorry, Titus, there’s no pinot noir in prison.

Regardless, a mashup of Netflix’s hit shows “Orange Is the New Black” and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” proves that a crossover episode needs to happen, like yesterday.

Get on it, Netflix.
