Olympic Rower Robbie Manson Comes Out As Gay

Manson

Olympic rower Robbie Manson of New Zealand has publicly come out as gay in a post published over at Out Sports. Manson opens up for the first time about the struggles he faced living in the closet:

Although it hasn’t always been in the forefront of my mind, deep down I was terrified of anyone finding out that I was gay, especially my teammates. I seriously thought that if anyone found out I wouldn’t be able to row anymore. The thought of coming out, in my mind, felt so limiting and terrifying.

Also, in a strange way, I looked down on other people who were gay, and to a degree felt sorry for them, thinking to be gay was to be “less than.” I knew I was gay too, and I hated myself because of it. I would get quite depressed about.

RowingManson also talks about his decision to finally come out to his friends before the 2012 Olympics, a decision that left him very emotional:

It was the night after being named to the NZ rowing team for the London Olympics that I came out to more people. I was ecstatic to be selected in the quad. Going to the Olympics was a dream of mine ever since watching the Sydney Games when I was 10 years old. We were having a few drinks and near the end of the night I had a heart-to-heart with two of my friends. In a very emotional state I told them that I was different, and then finally that I was gay.

On his role as a role model for other gay athletes grappling with the same challenges he once faced, Manson says:

There are already a lot of great gay sporting role models, and a lot who have achieved far more than I have, but I hope that my story can add something to what is already out there. To show other people who might be struggling with their sexuality, not only that it’s ok to be gay, but it’s a good thing, and it won’t change who you are or limit what you can achieve. At the end of the day, it’s only one of the many things that define me as a person.

It’s how hard you’re prepared to work for something and your talent that determines what you can achieve, not your sexuality.

Beyoncé Earned Almost Double Any Other Female Singers In The Past Year

Beyoncé Earned Almost Double Any Other Female Singers In The Past Year
Beyoncé topped Forbes’ list of 2014’s highest-paid female musicians, earning nearly double what runner-up Taylor Swift did ($64 million). Beyoncé also doubled her own earnings from 2013, reportedly climbing from $53 million to $115 million. As outrageous as those figures may be, it still falls short of Madonna’s $125 million earnings from 2013. (Conversely, the $58 million that put Britney Spears atop 2012’s list seems like relative chump change.)

Beyoncé’s grand fortune comes largely from The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, the surprise album she released in December and endorsement deals with brands like Pepsi and H&M, Forbes reports. (Calculations were tracked from June 2013 to June 2014.)

Pink, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga return from 2013’s Top 10, with Britney Spears again appearing on the list after being absent last year, and Miley Cyrus and Celine Dion joining their ranks. There were some notable absentees this year: Carrie Underwood, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj (all of whom appeared on 2013’s list) as well as Adele, Shakira and Sade (all of whom appeared on 2012’s list).

To see these artists’ earnings and learn why their pocketbooks are so stuffed, head over to Forbes.

At Long Last, Harvard Is Offering A Course In Anal Sex

At Long Last, Harvard Is Offering A Course In Anal Sex

Harvard-students-leaving--007God bless the Ivy League.

Harvard University, one of the most renowned educational institutions in the world, has added a new workshop to its curriculum.

“What What in the Butt: Anal Sex 101″ will be part of the school’s annual Sex Week initiative, “a week of programming that is interdisciplinary, thought-provoking, scholastic, innovative and applicable to student experiences in order to promote a holistic understanding of sex and sexuality.”

The workshop will cover everything inquiring minds could possibly want to know about back door action.

“Come learn everything about anal sex from the experts of Good Vibrations, a sex-positive store located right in Brookline,” the course description reads. “They will dispel myths about anal sex and give you insight into why people do it and how to do it well.”

Topics covered during the class will include: anal anatomy; basic preparation and hygiene methods; anal penetration for beginners; how to talk about anal sex with a partner; lubes, anal toys, and safer sex education; and more.

“Learn the facts about this exciting yet often misunderstood form of pleasure, find out the common mistakes people make, and get all your questions answered,” the course description promises.

But not everyone is pleased about butt sex being taught on campus.

“I do question the amount of time and resources that went into planning and funding these events, some of which are downright vulgar, at a place like Harvard,” student Molly Wharton told The College Fix.

“I can’t imagine that there are not more worthwhile educational programs and initiatives to which Harvard’s resources should be devoted,” she added.

On the contrary, we can’t imagine anything more worthwhile.

Rick Scott Defeats Charlie Crist in Florida Gubernatorial Race

Rick Scott Defeats Charlie Crist in Florida Gubernatorial Race

6a00d8341c730253ef0147e1c6faeb970b-800wiFormer Republican Governor Charlie Crist, who was seeking Florida’s top office again, this time as a Democrat, lost to incumbent Republican Rick Scott yesterday. The New York Times reports:

Despite Mr. Scott’s lack of popularity among voters, his victory was a testament, in large part, to an aggressive campaign that highlighted Florida’s economic turnaround during his tenure while also pummeling Mr. Crist with negative advertisements.

His win, although slight, came with the Florida Republican establishment’s full support, something he did not enjoy in 2010 when he beat out Bill McCollum, the party favorite, in the primary.

Still, Mr. Scott failed to capture a majority of voters, which may complicate his efforts to lead a politically mixed state in his second term.

Mr. Crist was unable to overcome months of attack ads, which constantly referred to him as a “flip-flopper” for switching his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat.

Scott’s victory means that the fate of gay marriage in the Sunshine State continues to be uncertain, as Scott has made it clear he intends to leave the question of how to handle legal challenges to state Attorney General Pam Bondi, who for her part has been adamant about defending the ban. Scott has meanwhile been unswayed by calls (including one made by Crist) for him to stop defending the anti-equality law that voters passed in 2008.

Though now a proponent of marriage equality, in 2006 Crist signed a petition supporting a state-wide constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.
