Many well- known and respected comic book writers like Marc Andreyko, Matt Wagner, and Phil Jimenez teamed up with DC Entertainment and IDW Publishing to put together 100 stories in 144 pages that “mourn the victims, examine love and celebrate the LGBTQ community”. The comic book, Love is Love honors the victims of the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub during “La Noche Latina” that killed 49 people and injured 53 in June 2016.

By March of last year, Love is Love raised over $165,000 for the OneOrlando Fund which went to the victims and those affected.

Love is Love includes many realistic scenarios of children, teenagers, and adults and their struggles and perseverance with LGBTQ acceptance. This comic book also includes many fan-favorite comic book heroes like Batwoman, Batman, Poison Ivy, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Harley Quinn who all show their support for the LGBTQ community. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and Albus Dumbledore are also featured in Love is Love. All four are depicted creating a rainbow with their wands and the image is accompanied by a quote from Goblet of Fire that states “Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.”

Repping the Midwest with Author and Educator…

Repping the Midwest with Author and Educator…

Repping the Midwest with Author and Educator @nifmuhammad

Throughout #BlackHistoryMonth, celebrated during February in the United States and Canada, we’re highlighting next-generation creatives of color who are shaping the future of their communities. Each of the featured accounts was selected by writer, curator and activist Kimberly Drew (@museummammy).

“Hanif Abdurraqib (@nifmuhammad) is a deeply talented writer and educator, representing as a beacon of hope, dedicated to championing black culture, authenticity and the written word,” says Kimberly of Hanif. “Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, he reps the Midwest in everything that he does, constantly interrogating notions of home in his work. As conversations about gentrification in the US loom large, Hanif is able to bring new, personal perspectives through his poetry. He has a great sense of humor while remaining committed to telling the truth. As an educator, he shared with me that he encourages his students to write about the music that makes them feel most seen, and that sometimes he’ll get essays or poems about [American hip-hop group] Migos. That’s the future I want to live in.”

Stephen Fry’s Prostate Cancer News Makes Clear What All Gay Men Should Do

Body Conscious: Gay Men’s Health, Sex, and Self is a new regular twice-monthly feature from Towleroad covering the unique issues gay men face with regard to physical and mental fitness.

Body Conscious Gay Men's Health, Sex, and SelfGay British author, actor, and host Stephen Fry was diagnosed with prostate cancer late last year and today revealed the diagnosis and his treatment in an intimate video. Fry said he’s currently cancer-free but will need more tests to be absolutely sure.

He also hopes his video will serve to educate other men about the importance of getting screened for this not uncommon form of cancer. Watch it above.

“I went around saying to myself, ‘I’ve got cancer. Good heavens, Stephen, you’re not the sort of person who gets cancer,’” said Fry in the clip. “I know it’s an old cliche but you don’t think it’s going to happen to you.”

He added: “For the moment I’m fit and well and happy and I just wanted to let you know because rumors had started to swirl.”

Fry described the process of having his biopsy, learning of his diagnosis, and the treatment that he’s gone through in hopes to educate other men. Fry said he was given a Gleason Score of 8, which was high enough to warrant treatment. The scale is used to rate the aggressiveness (1-10) of the cancer.

Fry said: “Here’s hoping I’ve got another few years left on this planet because I enjoy life at the moment and that’s a marvelous thing to be able to say, and I’d rather it didn’t go away.”

“So,” as Fry said in the start to his clip, how worried should you be about prostate cancer, when should you worry, and what should you do about it?

The prostate gland is a small but sensitive gland located between the penis and the bladder. As with most cancers, the earlier prostate cancer is caught, the better it can be treated. Most prostate cancer occurs in men older than 50, with African-American men at greater risk than those of other races, according to the American Cancer Society.

Prostate Exam. Digital rectal exam; drawing shows a side view of the male reproductive and urinary anatomy, including the prostate, rectum, and bladder; also shows a gloved and lubricated finger inserted into the rectum to feel the prostate.

They write:

Prostate cancer can often be found in its early stages by having a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, with or without a rectal exam. But many prostate cancers grow slowly and will never cause harm. The tests used today can often find prostate cancer, but many times they can’t tell if the cancer is truly dangerous. Finding and treating slow-growing cancers that are not dangerous to your health can lead to treatment side effects that you might not want, such as problems with your sex life or trouble controlling your urine.

Talk to a provider about the pros and cons of yearly prostate cancer screening starting when you’re 50. Talking about the benefits and limitations of testing can help you make an informed decision about whether to be tested. Gender identity should not keep you from having this conversation. If you’re African American or have a close relative who has/had prostate cancer when they were younger than 65, you should start having these discussions at age 45.

Prostate Cancer UK says that prostate issues are generally the same for all men whatever their sexual orientation. However, gay men differ from straight men in that, as anyone who has ever had anal sex can attest, the prostate plays a huge pleasure role.

As Jill Margo notes: “Without a prostate there is no ejaculation and no semen exchange, which has an important role in the sexual play between men who have sex with men. Without a prostate, the receptive partner in anal sex doesn’t get the benefit of having his prostate massaged, a process that augments orgasm. Without a prostate, the active partner might not have an erection rigid enough for penetrative anal sex. While men might recover some erectile function after surgery, vaginal penetration is generally easier.”

The three most common prostate issues are an enlarged prostate, prostatitis (an inflammation or infection of the gland) and prostate cancer.

Problems urinating could be a sign that you’re suffering from an enlarged prostate or prostatitis, but generally are not a symptom of prostate cancer.

For the latter, there are three tests that can be taken, a PSA test (as described above by the American Cancer Association), which detects the amount of prostate specific antigen in your blood. Everyone has a small amount, but it rises as you age. These tests are not always definitive, so it’s important to educate yourself about it first.

A digital rectal examination, in which a doctor feels the prostate to detect any abnormalities.

And a prostate biopsy. This is what Stephen Fry had after doctors decided he needed further tests. This is an invasive surgical procedure which removes a piece of the prostate to inspect it under a microscope.

As Fry said, you never think it will happen to you. So get checked and stay healthy.

A Dutch men’s fashion label has faced a social media backlash after a new advertising campaign featured men embracing and kissing.

Suitsupply, an international men’s tailoring brand, unveiled their campaign online and in its 91 stores across 22 countries earlier this week.

However, while many people praised the campaign, not everyone was in agreement.

The BBC reports:

The company has received multiple, critical responses on social media for putting homosexual imagery in its adverts.

NRC Handelsblad, a Dutch newspaper, reported on Wednesday evening that the company has lost more than 10,000 followers on its Instagram profile after the publication of the adverts.

Before launching the campaign, Fokke de Jong, the founder and chief executive of the brand, said: “The attraction between people is an important part of fashion advertising.

“A campaign featuring the attraction between men was long overdue and particularly relevant for our brand.”

De Jong admitted that the company might receive criticism.

“We do believe there is potential for negative impact, especially in countries where we have a significant presence, that are known for contrasting viewpoints.”

In 2016, the company was criticized for an advert featuring men playing around on giant, half-dressed women.

Last year, sister company Suistudio launched an advertising campaign showing powerful women using faceless naked men as props.

Georgia Senate Passes Anti-LGBTQ Bill; HRC Calls on House to Reject It

Georgia Senate Passes Anti-LGBTQ Bill; HRC Calls on House to Reject It

Today, HRC called out the Georgia Senate for passing SB 375, a bill that would allow child welfare organizations — including adoption and foster care agencies — to turn away qualified Georgians seeking to care for a child in need, including LGBTQ couples, interfaith couples, single parents, married couples in which one prospective parent has previously been divorced, or other parents to whom the agency has a religious objection.

“Plain and simple — SB 375 is discrimination dressed up as a ‘solution’ to a fake problem,” said Marty Rouse, national field director for the Human Rights Campaign. “It creates an unnecessary hardship for potential LGBTQ adoptive or foster parents in Georgia and primarily harms the children looking for a loving home. It’s unfortunate that leaders are focusing on this bill, instead of concrete ways to improve the child welfare system in Georgia. We ask the Georgia House of Representatives to reject this bill.”

Child welfare organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the Child Welfare League of America, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Education Association have condemned similar bills. This most harms children in the system who are awaiting placement in qualified, loving homes and are instead forced to remain in care. Child welfare services should be guided by the overarching principle that guides all family law: all determinations should be in the “best interest of the child.” It isn’t in the best interest of a child to deny them a qualified, loving family simply because that family doesn’t share all of the tenets of the placing agency’s faith.

Research consistently shows that LGBTQ youth are overrepresented in the foster care system, as many have been rejected by their families of origin because of their LGBTQ status, and are especially vulnerable to discrimination and mistreatment while in foster care. SB 375 will only exacerbate the challenges faced by LGBTQ young people.

SB 375 is a religious exemptions bill that would allow for taxpayer-funded agencies to deny perspective LGBTQ parents and refuse service to LGBTQ youth

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today released the following statement after the Georgia State Senate passed Senate Bill 375, a religious exemption bill that would allow taxpayer-funded agencies to deny adoption requests from LGBTQ couples and refuse service to LGBTQ youth.

“Senate Bill 375 is a dangerous step backward that would codify permission to discriminate against the LGBTQ community into Georgia state law,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “This bill is not about freedom of religion, which is one of our nation’s fundamental values, but rather about imposing one’s personal religious beliefs on others to discriminate against loving foster or adoptive parents simply because of their identity and deny services to LGBTQ youth.”

Georgia is one of 10 states with no child welfare non-discrimination protections for sexual orientation or gender identity. Legal protections for LGBTQ youth are essential, but SB 375 only target this already vulnerable community with more discrimination.
