At the start of the second season of Disney Channel’s Andi Mack, the show made history for the network when main character Cyrus (Joshua Rush) came out to his friend Buffy (Sofia Wylie). Having a gay character in the core ensemble in Disney Channel’s most popular show is a huge leap forward and earned the show a GLAAD Media Award nomination in the new category, Outstanding Kids and Family Programming.

Tonight, Cyrus’ story continues in the extended, full-hour episode “Cyrus’ Bash-Mitzvah,” where, in addition to having his Bar Mitzvah, he finally tells Andi (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) about his crush on Jonah. In the episode, Andi and Jonah’s relationship seems to be on the rocks after they disagree over calling each other “boyfriend” and “girlfriend.” As Andi vents to Cyrus and Buffy, Cyrus opens up to her, saying, “Andi, you’re not the only one who likes Jonah. I like him too.” After a moment’s pause to process Andi fully accepts him, as did Buffy, and the two friends make him feel safe and protected. Andi and Cyrus immediately begin bonding over their shared crush, and become closer as friends for his honesty. In the episode, audiences also meet Cyrus’ parents for the first time who are supportive and proud of their son.

This was a big week for Andi Mack as the show was renewed for a third season! Audiences can look forward to exploring Cyrus’ story further, as well as more on the other important topics covered in the series. Andi Mack includes plots addressing issues faced by military veterans with Buffy’s mom, and ongoing themes of self-empowerment and embracing your most authentic self. These stories are connecting with audiences, making Andi Mack both Disney Channel’s most popular series and a top 10 series on all of cable TV among kids and girls aged 6-11.

Having a coming out story on such a popular show among young viewers is hugely important, and we hope to see other series following Andi Mack’s example. As Lee (Andi) told Teen Vogue, “I think kids who have those very real feelings and things that actually really do happen, seeing that on TV can give them the confidence to be more proud of who they are.”

Don’t miss Andi Mack on Disney Channel on Fridays at 8/7c. You can also catch up on the DisneyNOW app and on-demand.

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPtwinning

Weekend Hashtag Project is a series featuring designated themes and hashtags chosen by Instagram’s Community Team. For a chance to be featured on the Instagram blog, follow @instagram and look for a post every week announcing the latest project.

Ever looked up to realize you’re coincidentally wearing the same outfit as your BFF or co-worker? This weekend, the goal is to capture moments of shared likeness that make you smile.

  • Create your own. This assignment is not just for people who look alike. Show us a close-up of matching nail art or the details of a collaborative art project.
  • Observe the natural world. Plants and insects are incredible mimics. Photographing them in their surroundings can bring an added layer of surprise.
  • Be open. Twinning isn’t all about obvious sets; objects and architecture can resemble people and animals. For example, your neighbor’s bush may perfectly mirror your poodle’s haircut.
  • Make sure you’re ready. Moments of twinning may be fleeting. As they say, pics or it didn’t happen!

PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPtwinning hashtag only to photos and videos taken over this weekend and only submit your own visuals to the project. If you include music in your video submissions, please only use music to which you own the rights. Any tagged photo or video taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured next week.

Cales: Encyclopedua

Most silent comedy is farce in the broadest sense of the term, since it is most often low and physical. What have been called the silent comedies of remarriage could better be described as toned-down sex farces, though their use of divorce reflects its increasing frequency in America at that historical moment. Cecil B. DeMille (1881-1959) made three such films: Old Wives for New (1918), Don’t Change Your Husband (1919), and Why Change Your Wife? (1920). As if to illustrate the difficulties of silent romantic comedy, these films, like many American silents, are heavily dependent on title cards, which present proverbial cynicism about marriage. In Why Change Your Wife?, marriage is illustrated by a scene repeated between the husband and each of his wives. As he tries to shave, his wife interrupts him repeatedly, refusing to acknowledge that finishing the shave might reasonably be something the husband should do prior to helping his mate. One expects, given this repetition, that when the husband remarries wife number one, she will revert to type, but the film ends with a title card expressing a previously absent faith in the ability of the romance to last. The new lesson is aimed at women: forget you are wives and continue to indulge your husband’s desires. In The Marriage Circle (1924), Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947) used subtle gestures and expressions to convey complex emotions among six interrelated charac- ters. Here, irony replaces more overt mockery of mar- riage, and the film treats its subject without moralizing. Other silent films staged romantic comedy by importing conventions from slapstick comedy and melodrama, as does It (1927), which made Clara Bow (1905-1965) ever after the “It Girl.” The story of the ultimately successful cross-class courtship of Bow’s shop girl and her employer, the department store’s owner, the film uses its title to refer to a special sexual magnetism that a lucky few enjoy. It thus offered an attempt at explaining the power of romantic love, as well as its own improbable plot. The sound era brought a raft of romantic comedies adapted from the stage. In the pre-Code era (1928-1934),
