From Burnout To Balance

From Burnout To Balance

30 (yes 30!) tips to get yourself back on track or avoid burnout altogether

From burnout to balance

About a year ago I managed to fry my brain and force my body into a complete stand still. After a few months of various doctors and numerous pills that made me worse than I was to begin with, I decided that what my brain and life needed was a complete overhaul. With the help of the right professionals and the best bunch of family and friends one could hope for, I set out on the difficult quest of going from burnout to balance. And I very quickly learnt that balance cannot be a destination because life is simply too complicated for that.

A year in, I see balance as more of a constant journey of refinement and learning about yourself and what works for you and which will have to be adapted as your life circumstances evolve. I most certainly haven’t mastered my version of balance yet but I am a hell of a lot better than I was a year ago when my body gave up and I had to be rushed to hospital with a malfunctioning brain.

So what have I learnt a year on? That I am still me and that my burnout tendencies will come back to haunt me if I don’t keep them in check. But I have also learnt some pretty simple tactics to keep me away from the dark side. You can move towards your own definition of balance by tweaking how you eat, move, rest and think. Here are the 30 (yes 30!) things I encourage you to try:

EAT WELL

1.Start your day off right: eat a balanced breakfast high in complex carbs, fibre, protein and good fats

2.Be careful with stimulants: don’t rely on too much coffee to keep you going

3.Carry a water bottle with you: drinking 2l per day will keep you hydrated and you may need less coffee

4.Cut the cr*p: decrease (or eliminate if you can handle it!) packaged and refined foods

5.Eat out the smart way: check the menu ahead and look for protein and greens based dishes

6.Step away from the Sauv: limit alcohol intake or if you’re brave, stop drinking altogether!

7.Carry healthy snacks with you: this will help you avoid the vending machine!

8.Watch how much and when you eat: don’t overeat and avoid eating late

9.Green up your plate: load up on fruit and veg – 10 portions a day is the latest advice

10.Supplement your diet: chances are you’re not getting everything you need

MOVE WELL

11. Turn your commute into a workout: run, cycle or get off a stop early and ALWAYS take the stairs

12.Sneak in a lunch break workout: loads of gyms do 30’ sessions now or just walk to a Pret that is a little bit further out!

13.Work out at work: sounds stupid but you can run some of your meetings while walking outside or even do 4-5 squats every time you hit the toilet cubicle! And use the stand-up desk every once in a while if there is one

14.Build the weights in: this is when a PT can make all the difference. Aerobic exercise is great but research shows that weight training improves bone density and brain performance, decreases body fat and increases the strength of connective tissue, muscles and tendons which leads to improved motor performance and decreased injury risk. Hit the squat rack and think of the #gains

15.Make it a date: if you’re accountable to a gym buddy you are over 50% more likely to go if you struggle with motivation

16.Listen to your body: if you are stressed and frazzled a HIIT class may just add to your adrenal overload so hit the mat for some yoga or go for a gentle run. Similarly, if you’re feeling sluggish something more intense may get you re-energised

REST WELL

A few tips on sleep:

17.Find your optimum and stick to it: it’s 8h for some and 4h for others but whatever it is, try and stick to it including at the weekend. Binge sleeping doesn’t work!

18.Practice sleep hygiene: try to go to bed and wake up at the same time, avoid screens 1h before bedtime and have a little bedtime ritual – our brains love routine so they will make connections between what you do and feeling sleepy

19.Help yourself wind down: avoid caffeine in the afternoon and don’t do stressful work just before bedtime

Recovery is not just about sleep though! Make sure that you’re also recharging in other ways:

20.Don’t skip holiday: no matter how busy you are, take time out. Benefits of holiday like reduced stress levels and improved mood have been proven to last for 5 weeks after you return – that’s more than your holiday pics will stay at the top of your friends’ Insta feeds!

21.Take breaks: research shows that taking 2×2 min breaks every working hour will keep you more focused and productive and less frazzled by the end of the day

THINK WELL

Author Napoleon Hill wrote ‘the body achieves what the mind believes’ so your mindset will be instrumental for you to #findyourbalance. Here are a few things that really help me:

22.Meditate: proven to have positive effects on all sorts of things from blood pressure to fertility, with just 10 minutes of sitting and watching your breath you can go a long way in reducing the overwhelm for your poor mind

23.Practice acceptance & compassion: you’re not perfect so don’t set unrealistic expectations for yourself and then proceed to beat yourself up!

24.Set boundaries: learn to say no and to explain what is and isn’t ok – don’t become everyone’s saviour!

25.Plan, plan & plan: look ahead at the week and identify those ‘crunch’ moments and see if you can do anything to deal with them ahead of time

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

It can be quite daunting to make changes to your life to achieve balance. So much advice out there and so many things to potentially modify in your day to day. My advice to you is to keep it simple and go little by little until you find something that works for you:

26.Pick 2-3 goals: don’t go for a major overhaul, find a few things you’d like to change and write some goals down. Be specific (statements like ‘I want to be more balanced’ won’t cut it) and write down why you want to achieve this. If you have an emotional connection with a goal, you’re more likely to achieve it

27.Find a buddy: if you’re accountable to someone, you double your chances of sticking to your goal

28.Be patient and kind to yourself: it takes anything between 28 to 60 days to form a new habit so you will mess up along the way but do not beat yourself up – guilt and negative self-talk is not the fuel for sustainable change

29.Have a blow out once in a while: you’re not Gwyneth Paltrow!!!

30. Laugh along the way: humour will help you A LOT while you’re trying to make changes. Laugh at yourself and the ridiculousness of having spinach at breakfast, doing squats in the toilet and whatever other ridiculous things you’ll get up to and the journey to balance will be easier!

Keep it balanced team – work hard, stay well and get in touch if you’d like to chat about your balance journey!

Much love and cortisol,

Paula

SCOTUS Arguments Today in Masterpiece Cakeshop Case; Case Could Have Consequences for LGBTQ People

SCOTUS Arguments Today in Masterpiece Cakeshop Case; Case Could Have Consequences for LGBTQ People

Today, HRC released the following statements ahead of oral arguments this morning at the Supreme Court of the United States in the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The case, which will be decided by next June, will either protect the fundamental equality of LGBTQ people — or it could set a dangerous precedent giving businesses a license to discriminate.

“At its core, this case is a cynical effort to manipulate the First Amendment in order to provide a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people and our families,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “The Trump-Pence administration’s decision to back discrimination in this case is another attack in their all-out war against the LGBTQ community. At every turn, they have sought to undermine the civil rights of LGBTQ people. It’s crucial that the justices reject discrimination and stand on the side of fairness and equality.”

“In the United States, businesses that are open to the public get to decide what to serve, but not who they serve. The First Amendment cannot and should not be distorted as a weapon of discrimination,” said HRC Legal Director Sarah Warbelow. “The ramifications of allowing people to pick and choose who they will serve could have severe consequences not only for LGBTQ people, but other minorities as well. Such a decision would put into jeopardy long-standing laws against discrimination across the country.”

The case involves Jack Phillips, a baker who refused to serve a gay couple in violation of Colorado’s statewide non-discrimination law. Represented by the SPLC-designated hate group Alliance Defending Freedom, Phillips — who lost before the Colorado Supreme Court — was granted the Supreme Court hearing to make a claim that he should be able to discriminate against LGBTQ people on religious freedom and freedom of speech grounds. The Trump-Pence Administration has also entered this case to back the baker’s claim. Masterpiece Cakeshop is one of the most significant Supreme Court cases of the year, and the outcome could have sweeping consequences for every single LGBTQ American and millions of others.

HRC organized two major amicus briefs in the case featuring the nation’s leading bakers, and chefs; as well as top businesses who oppose discrimination against LGBTQ people — the central issue in the case. The first brief from “Chefs for Equality” included more than 240 bakers, chefs, restaurateurs, and other culinary industry leaders from all 50 states, plus Washington, DC. They joined together to relay a very simple message: businesses must welcome all. If a business is open on main street, it must be open to everyone, regardless of who they are or whom they love. Backed by food professionals from Orlando, FL, to Seattle, WA, and Dallas, TX, to Philadelphia, PA, the brief was also signed by some of the most prominent names in the culinary industry, including Elizabeth Falkner, Jose Andres, Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Berman of Georgetown Cupcake, Carla Hall, Padma Lakshmi, Christina Tosi, Anthony Bourdain, Tom Colicchio, Duff Goldman, Sam Kass, and many more. The brief was authored by Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, an international law firm headquartered in Washington, DC.

Additionally, dozens of major corporations spoke out in another HRC-led amicus brief. These companies sent a powerful message to the Supreme Court, as well as LGBTQ people and allies across the nation. With one voice, they made clear that a business owner’s personal beliefs should never be reason enough to discriminate against a customer because of who they are or whom they love. The business brief was authored by Steptoe & Johnson LLP, an international law firm headquartered in Washington, DC, and was signed by major corporations from a diverse spectrum of industries, from Apple and Intel to Levi’s and Mass Mutual. The full list of signatories includes Affirm, Inc.; Airbnb, Inc.; Amalgamated Bank; Amazon.com, Inc.; American Airlines; Apple; Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc.; Choice Hotels International, Inc., International; Cisco Systems, Inc.; Citigroup Inc.; Deutsche Bank; Glassdoor, Inc.; Intel Corporation; John Hancock; Levi Strauss & Co.; Linden Research, Inc.; Lyft Inc.; Marriott International, Inc.; MassMutual; Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams; MongoDB, Inc.; National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce; NIO U.S.; PayPal Holdings, Inc.; Pfizer Inc; Postmates Inc; PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP; Prudential Financial, Inc.; Replacements, Ltd.; salesforce.com, inc.; SurveyMonkey; The Estée Lauder Companies Inc.; Uber Technologies, Inc.; WeddingWire, Inc.; Weebly, Inc.; Witeck Communications; and Yelp Inc.

GLAAD: Trump Administration Pushes Anti-LGBTQ Discrimination at the Supreme Court Today

GLAAD: Trump Administration Pushes Anti-LGBTQ Discrimination at the Supreme Court Today

This morning the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments for Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission

Anti-LGBTQ hate group, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), alongside Jeff Sessions’ Department of Justice, are arguing to undermine LGBTQ non-discrimination protections

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, responded to today’s oral arguments before the Supreme Court in the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, in which the Jeff Sessions’ Department of Justice is scheduled to speak in support of a Colorado baker who denied to serve an LGBTQ couple.

“The Department of Justice will pretend that this case is not about discrimination as they argue in front of the Supreme Court today, but that could not be further from the truth. While freedom of religion is paramount to our nation’s success, it does not give anyone the right to impose their beliefs on others, to harm others, or to discriminate,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “There is no sugar-coating the blatant and ugly agenda to discriminate against LGBTQ people at the core of this case, which is about seeking religious exemptions from non-discrimination laws for the singular purpose of refusing service to people simply because who they are.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has close ties with the ADF, which the Southern Poverty Law Center designates as an anti-LGBTQ hate group. The Department of Justice is joining the ADF to argue in favor of the defendant in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. This follows Sessions speaking at a closed door ADF Summit as Attorney General and being listed as a contributor to their monthly magazine. Additionally, Sessions has an extensive anti-LGBTQ record of his own that is documented in GLAAD’s Trump Accountably Project.

In advance of oral arguments, GLAAD released resources for journalists covering the case which debunk inaccurate narratives that ADF actively pushes to press outlets. GLAAD also released an open letter to the media, together with more than 40 organizations, calling for accurate reporting around religious exemptions.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Jeff Sessions’ Ties to the Alliance Defending Freedom and Anti-LGBTQ Record

Ties to the Alliance Defending Freedom:

  • Consulted with the ADF on the October 2017 Department of Justice guidance to government agencies about how to interpret so-called “religious freedom.”

  • Spoke at a closed-door ADF summit on so-called “religious freedom” as the active US Attorney General.

  • The ADF has posted Sessions’ “We Will Defend Religious Freedom Resolutely” speech as the centerpiece of its monthly magazine, and even listed him on the masthead as a contributor to the publication.

  • Prior to Sessions’ confirmation hearing, ADF founder Alan Sears wrote an Op-ED praising Sessions, in large part because of his resistance to LGBTQ rights.

  • Aligned himself with current ADF CEO Michael Farris in opposing the United Nations’ “Convention on the Rights of the Child” in 2010.

Anti-LGBTQ Record as Attorney General:

  • 10.10.17 – Openly defended LGBTQ discrimination when discussing the Masterpiece Cakeshop SCOTUS case in an interview with Christian Broadcasting Network.

  • 10.6.17 – Issued a sweeping “religious exemptions” guidance which invites taxpayer-funded federal agencies, government employees, and government contractors to legally discriminate against LGBTQ employees as long as they cite a religious belief as the reason for doing it.

  • 10.5.17 – Reversed a policy that provided non-discrimination protections for transgender people in the workplace under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

  • 9.7.17 – Filed an amicus brief in support so-called “religious exemptions” to discriminate against LGBTQ Americans.

  • 9.5.17 – Announced the end of the DACA program, which protected an estimated 800,000 young undocumented immigrants, including 36,000 LGBTQ DREAMers, from detention and deportation.

  • 7.26.17 Filed a brief opposing workplace nondiscrimination protections for the LGBTQ community under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the case Zarda v. Altitude Express.

  • 7.11.17 – Delivered closed-press remarks at a Summit on Religious Liberty hosted by the anti-LGBTQ hate group, Alliance Defending Freedom.

  • 6.28.17 – The Department of Justice ejected reporters covering a DOJ Pride event hosted by LGBTQ affinity groups for federal workers.

  • 4.14.17 – Withdrew lawsuit accusing North Carolina of discriminating against the LGBTQ community in response to HB2, despite the similarities of the HB142 replacement.

  • 2.22.17 – Rescinded Title IX protections for transgender students in our nation’s schools.

Votes against LGBTQ Community Prior to Service:

  • 2004 & 2006: Senator Sessions voted for the Federal Marriage Amendment, a constitutional amendment that would have made marriage equality illegal.

  • 2009Voted against the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

  • 2010Voted against the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Act repeal, which effectively ended the nation’s ban against allowing LGBTQ Americans to serve in the armed forces.

  • 2013: Voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act which bans federally funded service providers from discriminating against LGBTQ victims.

  • 2013Voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

  • 2015Sessions co-sponsored the so-called State Marriage Defense Act, a bill designed to circumvent federal protections for same-sex married couples.

  • 2015Sessions co-sponsored the so-called First Amendment Defense Act, which would allow opponents of marriage equality to discriminate against LGBTQ (or even supportive) customers and contractors.

Anti-LGBTQ Actions Prior to Service:

  • 1996As Alabama’s Attorney General, Jeff Sessions reportedly fought to stop LGBTQ conference: As Alabama’s attorney general in 1996, Sessions attempted to stop the Southeastern Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual College Conference from meeting at the University of Alabama under a state law passed in 1992 that made it illegal for public universities to fund in any way a group that promotes “actions prohibited by the sodomy and sexual misconduct laws.”

  • 1997: While attempting to defund the National Endowment of the Arts, Sessions echoed social conservative claims that “the National Endowment for the Arts showed explicit homosexual activities on the screen using a $31,000 grant.”

  • 2006Sessions claimed the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning sodomy laws “divorced morality from law.”

  • 2009: Sessions once referred to a gay sexual orientation as having “gay tendencies.”

  • 2010: In midst of the Prop 8 court hearings, Sessions condemned California federal judge for finding the state’s discriminatory marriage ban to be unconstitutional, claiming he “was citing his own views, emotions and feelings” rather than the law.

  • 2010: Sessions opposed the nomination of US Supreme Court justice Elena Kagan in large part because of what he perceived as her LGBTQ support.

  • 2010While opposing the nomination of a DC Superior Court judge, Sessions cited (and placed on record) letters from viciously anti-LGBTQ groups like the Traditional Values Coalition, which faulted the nominee for her “radical lesbianism, anti-marriage” views.

  • 2015: Following the historic U.S. Supreme Court ruling which granted marriage equality across the nation, Sessions implied the US Supreme Court was not allowed to find a right to marriage equality and that he might continue the fight: “…what this court did-they can’t to do, nothing in the constitution for such a result no mention of marriage in the constitution,’ says Sessions. It’s an issue that evokes a lot of passion on both sides and may not be over.”

‘House Of Cards’ Season 6: Robin Wright To Take The Lead When Production Resumes

‘House Of Cards’ Season 6: Robin Wright To Take The Lead When Production Resumes

Netflix has confirmed that Robin Wright will take the lead in the next series of ‘House Of Cards’, with production set to resume in the New Year.

Work on the show’s final season was already underway when lead actor Kevin Spacey became the subject of numerous sexual assault allegations, and in early November, Netflix announced that he would not be returning as Frank Underwood.

The company’s chief Ted Sarandos has now confirmed that the new episodes will focus on Robin’s character, Claire Underwood, stating (via The Hollywood Reporter): “We are excited to bring closure to fans.”

The final season will be shorter than usual, with just eight episodes.

Speaking on Radio 4’s Today programme, Michael Dobbs, the creator of the original ‘House Of Cards’ and executive producer of the Netflix series, opened up about the decision to axe Spacey.

“It’s not been the easiest few weeks, my world seemed to tilt on its axis somewhat,” he said. “But at the end of the day, no individual is greater than the show.

“There are so many things involved and thousands of people depend, either directly or indirectly, on the show for their jobs.”

Robin also stated that she considered the show’s two lead characters, Claire and Frank, as equals.

“They are equivalent as far as their power, their union and the plot,” she said in May 2017. “I may not have as many scenes or words as Francis, but Claire doesn’t need to verbalise as much.

“Francis is an orator, a poet, a demonstrator. Claire is an [ego] that sits in the back and directs him, but they are partners on the same plane.”

Why Phil Howard Believes Fellow Chefs Have A ‘Dishonest Relationship With Food’

Why Phil Howard Believes Fellow Chefs Have A ‘Dishonest Relationship With Food’

How many times have you scanned a restaurant menu, failed to recognise half of the ingredients and struggled to know what to order?

According to chef Phil Howard, this occurs when professionals are distracted by trying to be clever, rather than creating food people actually want to eat.

“Menus are written with far too much input from the brain and not nearly enough from the stomach,” he says.

“A lot of chefs have a neurotic relationship with food or a dishonest relationship with food, where at home they eat roast chicken and chips and at work they make a sea urchin gel.”

Phil Howard

In the latest episode of The Chefs’ Chefs, HuffPost UK’s original video series, Howard shows his former colleague Jun Tanaka around his newly established restaurant, Elystan Street.

Howard opened the restaurant in September 2016 after hanging up his apron at The Square, Mayfair, where he held two Michelin stars for 19 years.

His bold move to leave the successful restaurant has provided him with space to create new dishes from the heart.

Elystan Street’s menu centres on comforting food such as mushroom soup with parmesan-coated bread and roast calf’s sweetbread, which Howard refers to as a “posh chicken nugget”.

“I’m a great believer that the best food has a little bit of naughtiness in it somewhere,” he says.

“If your food is ingredient-led – it doesn’t really matter whether if it’s a sweetbread, whether it’s a scallop, whether it’s grouse or whether it’s an asparagus spear – if you’re starting off with a wonderful ingredient, all you’ve got to do is cook it nicely and put it with something seasonal and the job’s done.”

With dishes that look as good as his, we can’t argue with that logic.

Spotify’s Year In Music Declares Little Mix The Most Streamed Group In The UK (Sorry, Coldplay)

Spotify’s Year In Music Declares Little Mix The Most Streamed Group In The UK (Sorry, Coldplay)
In a sure sign that Christmas is nearly upon us, Spotify have shared their end of year facts and figures, revealing which acts, albums and songs their UK users have been playing on repeat throughout 2017.

Sadly, the numbers don’t reveal much in the way of shocking information and as many of you may have suspected, Ed Sheeran and ‘Despacito’ have been streamed a lot in the last 11 months.

There is a silver-lining though as the figures prove just how popular Little Mix are, with the one-time ‘X Factor’ winners being the only female act to break into the Most Streamed Artists in the UK Top 5.

The band are in third place on the list and joined by Ed, who is unsurprisingly top, Drake in second and Eminem – who hasn’t released a solo album since 2013 – in fourth, while The Weeknd completes the list.

The absence of any other female acts from the Top 5 mean none of them managed to amass more streams than Little Mix, who also top the Most Streamed Bands in the UK list, beating Coldplay, who are second, and The Chainsmokers, who are third.

Little Mix also leave Arctic Monkey and Imagine Dragons for dust, as they come in at fourth and fifth on the list.

In other words, Little Mix have totally smashed it this year (not that we needed further proof).

Spotify’s annual look back at their data also reveals the most streamed songs and breakout stars.
