‘Will & Grace’ Turn Back Time, Christopher Meloni Gets ‘Happy!’ and More TV this Week
Christopher Meloni

Christopher Meloni

Check out our weekly guide to TV this week, and make sure you’re catching the big premieres, crucial episodes and the stuff you won’t admit you watch when no one’s looking.

Prepare to make the yuletide even more gay as Will & Grace serves up a brand new holiday special. In Tuesday’s episode, 9 p.m. Eastern on NBC, the gang envisions what it would be like in old, OLD New York (1912). Turns out: Life’s a lot less fun without Wi-Fi, Uber and Scruff.

Not only is Christopher Meloni hands-down one of the hottest actors to grace screens large and small, but he can also pull off screwball comedy (Wet Hot American Summer, Veep), intense melodrama (Oz) and action (Law and Order: SVU) all with equal aplomb. Luckily, it looks like he gets to do all three in the new series, Happy! premiering Wednesday at 10 p.m. Eastern on Syfy.

If you only watch one episode of The Real Housewives of New Jersey this year, it should probably be Wednesday at 9 p.m. Eastern on Bravo. This week is the iconic Posche fashion show. Oh, you don’t know about the Posche Fashion Show? It’s a fashion show for the local strip mall fashion haus run by an actual Sleestak, and it’s the scene of some of the most insane Housewives battles in history. Check out the clip above from the season two Posche Fashion show that features the women of New Jersey stampeding in so much faux fur you’d think it was choreographed by Julie Taymor.

It feels like Abbi and Ilana just came back to us, but this season of Broad City is wrapping up with a “Friendiversary” finale Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. Eastern on Comedy Central.

Gay-adjacent film actor and auteur James Franco brings his reliably looney antics to Saturday Night Live with musical guest SZA, 11:30 p.m. Eastern on NBC.

What are you watching this week?

Channel 4 Told To Move Out Of London Or Face Legislation Forcing HQ Move

Channel 4 Told To Move Out Of London Or Face Legislation Forcing HQ Move

Channel 4 is being warned by the Government to relocate out of London – or face legislation forcing a move.

The state-backed broadcaster, which has its HQ in Westminster, is under fresh political pressure to shift its staff and offices to either Birmingham, Manchester or Bristol.

Culture Secretary Karen Bradley is stepping up her demands, warning privately that the station has until the New Year to “get on board”.

Ministers have been taken aback by the reluctance of some at the channel to move the network out of London.

Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow.

Channel 4 has argued that relocating outside the capital could be “highly damaging” if its entire operations were shifted far away from many of the independent TV firms and advertisers with which it does business.

Former chief executive David Abraham even claimed the move would “destroy” the channel, which was created in 1982.

Bradley is expected to hold last-ditch talks before Christmas with Alex Mahon, the new chief executive, in the hope of getting a more positive response.

A Whitehall source told HuffPost UK: “It is just very well-paid TV people who seem to be horrified at the idea of living anywhere apart from London. If they don’t come round to it, we will look at changing the law.”

With little Parliamentary time for new legislation, ministers are understood to have identified a private members bill being taken through parliament by Tory MP Jack Brereton which could be used as a vehicle to force the law change through.

Brereton told the Commons earlier this year: “Channel 4 could have a significant transformative impact on a new location, with the potential to anchor wider regeneration and deliver jobs over and above those which move out of the capital.”

His private members’ bill is due to have its second reading in October 2018.

A Channel 4 spokesperson said: “We are proud of our leadership on diversity and the substantial contribution we make to the Nations and Regions and we want to grow this further and give even greater support to creative talent across the UK.

“We are working closely with Government to ensure we support the important principles of regional representation and deliver our remit.”

Sources at the broadcaster said that meetings had been taking place at the highest level between it and Whitehall to find a solution acceptable to both.

Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado: A License to Discriminate with Echoes to the Past

Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado: A License to Discriminate with Echoes to the Past

Masterpiece cakeshop v colorado jack phillips

Anti-gay baker Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop.

Yesterday, we discussed some of the legal issues that will likely come up during today’s oral argument in Masterpiece Cakeshop. Today I want to talk more broadly about the implications of this case being brought in the first place.

In short, Masterpiece does not just seek a license to discriminate; it seeks a license to discriminate enshrined in and protected by law.

Masterpiece’s religious owner and his conservative allies don’t want to be the exceptions. They want to be the rule, like Jim Crow was the rule in the South. They seek a legal regime in which anyone can opt out of any law in the name of religion. They seek a world in which laws apply to other people, not them. They seek a world in which no one tells them what to do.

READ THIS NEXT: The ‘Masterpiece Cakeshop’ Case Isn’t About Cake: What To Expect at the Supreme Court

These arguments are simultaneously rooted in history and unique to our political moment. How can that be?

It is hard to read the arguments coming from Masterpiece and its conservative allies — “My religion tells me that homosexuality is wrong and I shouldn’t have to endorse or participate in something I find morally abhorrent,” for example — and not think about Jim Crow South. In 1964 and 1965, black Americans at the vanguard of the civil rights movement drove in to drive-in restaurants, sat at lunch counters, and walked into motels only to be turned away because they were black. Those establishments, by law, only served whites. In every single public accommodations case of the era, white business owners argued that their religious beliefs conflicted with the prospect of integrating the races: “My religion tells me that black persons should not be mixing with white folks and I shouldn’t have to endorse or participate in something I find morally abhorrent.”

Black patrons won their cases over the next 5 years, as various public accommodations cases made their way through the federal courts. The Supreme Court addressed this religion argument directly, calling the religious pretext to discriminate “patently frivolous.”

How is it possible, then, that we find ourselves back at the Supreme Court litigating the same question?

It would be easy, but lazy, to say that there is something special about gays. We are special, sure, but the echoes to the civil rights movement are too stark. And the hatred Christian conservatives have for us is at least on par with the hatred they had for racial integration in the 1960s.

The truth is that conservatives never accepted the federal court civil rights decisions as legitimate. Since the 1960s, right wing jurists, law students, lawyers, and politicians have come together in advocacy organizations, board rooms, law schools, universities, and think tanks to develop a long con to undermine and ultimately undo civil rights. For everyone.

They chose a familiar argument — states’ rights — that served the slave states well for decades. They glommed onto a theory of constitutional interpretation — originalism — that gave them a pretext to create an America that literally looked like the America of 1789. They built the Federalist Society that captures young conservative minds in law schools and turns them into Neil Gorsuch-es. And they boldly challenged what most of us thought were long-accepted norms and precedents.

Between 1965 and 2017, they had quite a few notable milestone successes. The conservative William Rehnquist, for a time a lone dissenter on the Supreme Court, was joined by Antonin Scalia, an original originalist, in 1986. Their duo became a trio with the even more conservative Clarence Thomas, who doesn’t even believe that public accommodations laws are legitimate, in 1991. These men, and many that followed, have always wanted to relitigate the otherwise settled cases of the civil rights movement. LGBTQ Americans are now the targets.

Undermining long-settled precedent and norms grew to a hysterical pitch in the Republican Party during the Obama Era and, ultimately, in Donald Trump. Republicans challenged Obamacare, claiming once again that a business owner’s religious beliefs — this time about contraception — trump the law of the land. They argued that part of the Civil Rights Act that protected minority voters in the South should be held unconstitutional because racism doesn’t exist anymore. They argued that public employees should not have to do their jobs because free speech, religion, or something.

Masterpiece Cakeshop did not pop up out of nowhere. It is the apotheosis of decades of conservative work to undermine the vestiges of progressivism and equality in the modern liberal state. The only people standing in their way are two gay men in love (and their lawyers). And that’s a battle we must, and will, win.

‘Will & Grace’ Reboot Comes To Channel 5 As They Pick Up UK Broadcasting Rights

‘Will & Grace’ Reboot Comes To Channel 5 As They Pick Up UK Broadcasting Rights
British ‘Will & Grace’ fans have finally got their wish, as it has been confirmed the new series is coming to the UK.

Channel 5 has announced it has bought the rights to air the reboot of the classic sitcom from January.

The 16-episode series has proved to be a big hit in the US, where it returned to screens after an 11-year absence.

It reunites the original gang of Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes as Will Truman, Grace Adler, Karen Walker and Jack McFarland respectively.

As part of Channel 5′s acquisition, they also have the right to show the next 13-episode season too.

Katie Keenan, VP, Acquisitions, Channel 5 and VIMN UK said: “‘Will & Grace’ is one of the greatest comedy shows of our time, so we’re thrilled to see it return to TV screens.

“With the hugely talented cast reprising their roles and tackling the issues of today with their razor-sharp wit, ‘Will & Grace’ will become ‘must-see’ television in 2018.”

‘Will & Grace’ originally aired from 1998 until 2006, picking up 16 Emmys and 83 nominations across its run, making it one of the most critically acclaimed series of the last 20 years.

It previously aired in the UK on Channel 4, and its move to Channel 5 will give fans an extra dose of nostalgia, as it will air alongside ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ – just as it used to in its former home.

The new series will debut on Friday 5 January at 10pm on Channel 5.

HAPPENING NOW — SCOTUS HEARING ARGUMENTS IN MASTERPIECE CASE OF BUSINESS THAT TURNED AWAY SAME-SEX COUPLE: The case, which will be decided by next June, will either protect the fundamental equality of LGBTQ people — or it could set a dangerous precedent giving businesses a license to discriminate. The case involves Jack Phillips, a baker who refused to serve a gay couple in violation of Colorado’s statewide non-discrimination law. Represented by the SPLC-designated hate group Alliance Defending Freedom, Phillips — who lost before the Colorado Supreme Court — was granted the Supreme Court hearing to make a claim that he should be able to discriminate against LGBTQ people on religious freedom and freedom of speech grounds. The Trump-Pence Administration has also entered this case to back the baker’s claim. Masterpiece Cakeshop is one of the most significant Supreme Court cases of the year, and the outcome could have sweeping consequences for every single LGBTQ American and millions of others. More from HRC.

“At its core, this case is a cynical effort to manipulate the First Amendment in order to provide a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people and our families,” said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin). “The Trump-Pence administration’s decision to back discrimination in this case is another attack in their all-out war against the LGBTQ community. At every turn, they have sought to undermine the civil rights of LGBTQ people. It’s crucial that the justices reject discrimination and stand on the side of fairness and equality.”

  • Erwin Chemerinsky, Constitutional law expert and Berkeley Law dean: “This should be a simple case for the Supreme Court: The government has a compelling interest in stopping discrimination. All anti-discrimination laws interfere with freedom to discriminate; there is an inherent tension between liberty and equality. But our society has made the choice for more than a half century that preventing discrimination is more important than upholding the freedom to discriminate.” Read more at the Miami Herald.

Tony Perkins has no place in Masterpiece Cakeshop media coverage without his anti-LGBTQ record on full display

Tony Perkins has no place in Masterpiece Cakeshop media coverage without his anti-LGBTQ record on full display

Tony Perkins will be courting press outside the Supreme Court today during Masterpiece Cakeshop oral arguments and pushing faulty narratives

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today released research on Tony Perkins who announced he will be holding a rally and speaking to media outside the Supreme Court today during the hearing for Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

Perkins, who serves as the president of the Family Research Council, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has designated an anti-LGBTQ hate group, has an extensive anti-LGBTQ record that must not be erased from media coverage around his perspective on the Supreme Court case. Previously, Perkins has called for Justice Kennedy to be impeached following his marriage equality ruling, promoted the dangerous and scientifically discredited practice of so-called conversion therapy, and has compared LGBTQ advocates to terrorists.

“Tony Perkins is a fringe anti-LGBTQ activist who has spent his career attempting to roll back and erase the hard-fought progress of the LGBTQ community at every turn,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “If the core of this case is truly about an artist’s expression and not anti-LGBTQ discrimination, then why are renowned artists and leaders in the art world absent from the Supreme Court today while known anti-LGBTQ talking head Tony Perkins, who has gone so far as to support foreign laws that punish being LGBTQ with death, rushes to rally behind the defendant.”

In the press release which announced the rally, the Family Research Council quoted Tony Perkins as being a proponent of the ‘artistic talents’ of the defendant in the case. Perkins is an anti-LGBTQ mouthpiece, not an expert on artistic expression or non-discrimination laws. Media has a responsibility to put him into full context for readers, listeners, and viewers.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Tony Perkins Extensive Anti-LGBTQ Record

  • President, Family Research Council, which the Southern Poverty Law Center listed as an anti-gay hate group in 2010.

  • Reportedly pushed to have scientifically discredited “conversion therapy” in the 2016 Republican Party platform.

  • Insists Target’s trans-inclusive bathroom policies have turned their facilities into “crime scenes” like a “live rendition of CSI.”

  • Says Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy should be impeached simply because of his marriage ruling.

  • Says about gay people: “They are intolerant. They are hateful. They are vile. They are spiteful”…”pawns” of the “enemy.” (See 1:30 mark.)

  • Claims DC’s ban on scientifically discredited “ex-gay” therapy is “locking kids into a lifestyle with devastating health, emotional, and societal consequences” and “opening a frightening chapter in the liberal recruiting of LGBTs.”

  • Claims LGBTQ activists are going to “start rolling out the boxcars” and carting away Christians (a reference to the Holocaust).

  • Claims gay parents ”provide distorted values to innocent adopted kids.”

  • Lumps together Aurora shooting, kidnapping, and openly gay soldiers as three examples of a “nation gone under.”

  • Says many gays have an “emptiness within them (:55) because they are “operating outside of nature.” (1:09)

  • Despite what health experts have saidinsists that pedophilia is “a homosexual problem.”

  • The Family Research Council has distributed a pamphlet that claims gay men are more likely to molest children, and supports “reorientation therapy” for gay people.

  • The Family Research Council has distributed a pamphlet that begins by likening the logic behind same-sex marriage to the logic behind man-horse marriage.

  • Compares LGBTQ legal advocates to terrorists: “[B]ack in the 80s and early 90s, I worked with the State Department in anti-terrorism and we trained about 50 different countries in defending against terrorism, and it’s, at its base, what terrorism is, it’s a strike against the general populace simply to spread fear and intimidation so that they can disrupt and destabilize the system of government. That’s what the homosexuals are doing here to the legal system.” (0:31).

  • Says: “The truth is that we cannot redefine marriage without opening the door to all manner of moral and social evil.”

  • Called the It Gets Better project “disgusting,” claiming it tells children “that it’s okay to be immoral” and constitutes a “concerted effort to persuade kids that homosexuality is okay and actually to recruit them into that lifestyle”; also called the project a “deceptive lie.”

  • Paid $82,500 to use the phone bank of former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke for an election run-off.

  • Claims “blood of young marines” is on hands of legislators who voted to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

  • Claims “people know intuitively that [homosexuality] is morally wrong.

  • Says: “it’s a fact” that homosexuality leads to “eternal damnation”

  • Says gays and lesbians are “held captive by the enemy.”

  • Claims his kids couldn’t be gay because he is “teaching them the right ways that they are to interact as human beings” (3:15-3:39).

  • Compared former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s proposed ban on supersized soft drinks to the “need” to ban homosexuality.

  • Equates LGBTQ pride with drunkenness and adultery: “The month of June is Gay Pride Month. Now, I have not yet seen where they have declared Adultery Pride Month, I have not seen where they have declared the Drunkenness Pride Month.”

  • Argues that scientifically-discredited “ex-gay” therapy should be framed as “successful,” and encouraging gays to “escape the homosexual lifestyle.”

  • Claims: “Even if society embraced homosexuality, there would never be that sense of self-fulfillment because it’s outside of how God created man and woman, and that’s the bottom line. They can’t erase that.”

  • Claims Uganda bill (with death penalty attached) simply “upholds moral conduct.”

  • Equates gay people with drug addicts, adulterers: “…[W]e need to be praying for those who are bound up in these lifestyles whether it is homosexuality, whether it is drugs, whatever it might be, anything that is outside the design of God for mankind, it could be adulterous relationships, it doesn’t matter.”

  • Says marriage equality will be “the nail in coffin of marriage” and will “take society down with it.”

  • Says Republican Senator Rob Portman should not support his gay son’s “choices that are both harmful to [him] and to society as a whole.”

  • Claims service members’ same-sex weddings “desecrate” military chapels.

  • Backed a double standard pertaining to the religious freedom of the pro-gay United Church of Christ, saying “I would use that term ‘Christian’ loosely.”

Stephen Colbert Grills Billy Bush About the Access Hollywood Tape and Trump’s Lies: WATCH
Billy Bush Colbert

Billy Bush Colbert

Billy Bush sat down with Stephen Colbert following an op-ed he published discussing the Access Hollywood “pussygate” tape which Trump claims is a fake.

It’s the first interview Bush has given since the incident got him fired from NBC.

The Washington Post reports:

He regrets it now. But at the time, “The Apprentice” was a massive hit, and shared a parent company with “Access Hollywood.” So a major part of Bush’s job was to bond with Trump. As Bush put it, “Everyone had to kiss the ring a bit of The Donald because he was making so much money for NBC. ”

“It was 2005, and his ratings were through the roof and he was the big star of NBC. And I sort of equated what he was saying to some kind of, you know, crass standup act, like an Andrew Dice Clay performance,” Bush said. “You figure, well, that’s not Dice when he’s home, he doesn’t actually do those things.”

“But the camera wasn’t on him. Why did it seem like a performance to you?” Colbert asked.

“Because he was just regaling the seven guys on there and doing this, doing his bit,” Bush said. “If I had thought there was a man detailing a sexual assault strategy to me, I would have called the FBI, not just reported it to my executive producer.”
