Adam Rippon sat down with Ellen DeGeneres today to talk about his experience at the Olympic games.

Asked about his Bronze medal in figure skating and being told by Ellen that he deserved Gold, Rippon replied: “I know I’m my mother’s favorite skater and the only thing I regret about the Olympics is that I feel like the judges didn’t fully take that into consideration.”

Rippon also revealed his celebrity crushes: “I feel like a really solid answer is Jake Gyllenhaal. I used to have a really big crush on Harry Styles….”

“What happened,” asked Ellen.

“Here’s the thing,” Adam explained. “I was sleeping on Shawn Mendes.”

“I’m sorry?”, asked Ellen, who got what he was saying after a bit of clarification. “Sleeping like you had not paid attention, I see…So now Shawn Mendes has taken over from Harry Styles.

“I know Harry will be upset,” said Adam. “Love is a funny thing.”

Ellen said she’d like to point him in the direction of some gay men who look like them.

Later, Ellen asked Adam what he would say to Mike Pence if he had the chance to speak with him.

Replied Adam: “I’m an openly gay man competing at the Olympics and somebody who thinks that gay people might be the societal collapse of our nation, I didn’t feel that it was the right time. If I had the chance to have a call with him now, I have nothing to say to Mike Pence. That’s not a conversation for me. I think going to the Olympics it’s given me a great platform to give a voice to people who feel like they don’t have one. So if that call were to happen I’d say it’s not for me, it’s for those people who – their lives have been affected and changed by legislation that he’s pushed – it’s a chance for them to share their stories and their experiences – it’s not for me.”

Ellen asked what the Olympics has done for him.

He replied: “I’m still the same old hot mess I was 10 years ago. My life has completely changed but at the core I’m still that same old disaster.”

Rippon also revealed he had a goldfish named Princess Diana, and one called Diarrhea.

Finally, Rippon landed a hilarious joke about the number of LGBTQ people in the world, asking Ellen’s audience to look around: “1 in 5 kids today identify with some sort of LGBTQ identity, and that’s 1 in 5.”

“We’re 2 for 2 right down here,” he added, pointing at Ellen. “So look to your left, look to your right, and if nobody’s gay, you’re probably the one.”

NEW: LGBTQ Advocates Launch TV Ad Targeting Trump-Pence Ban on Transgender Troops

NEW: LGBTQ Advocates Launch TV Ad Targeting Trump-Pence Ban on Transgender Troops

Today, HRC, Lambda Legal, OutServe-SLDN, the American Military Partner Association, and Gender Justice League unveiled a new television ad — entitled “Patriots” — featuring military, national security, and bipartisan officials voicing opposition to the Trump-Pence administration’s ban on transgender service members. The television ad is part of the largest paid media campaign against Donald Trump’s ban on transgender troops since he tweeted the policy last July — and complements a full page print ad that ran in USA Today and more than 32 regional Gannett papers nationwide this week.

“Donald Trump and Mike Pence have pursued this unconscionable, unconstitutional ban despite the opposition of our military leaders, national security officials, bipartisan lawmakers, and the vast majority of Americans who believe that brave, qualified transgender troops should be allowed to serve their country,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “It’s long past time the White House abandon this reckless, unconstitutional ban and give these brave individuals the dignity, respect and honor they deserve.”

“The drumbeat of principled and expert opposition to the tweeted ban on transgender military service continues to grow louder and louder, illustrating how dangerous and short-sighted this discriminatory policy is,” said Sasha J. Buchert, Staff Attorney at Lambda Legal. “Military leaders, elected officials from both sides of the aisle and an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose this ban. It is time for the Trump Administration to end this misguided and harmful policy, and no amount of paint will cover up its obvious and unconstitutional intent.”

“The Trump-Pence Administration needs to hear loud and clear that their bigoted, discriminatory ban is severely out of touch with not just lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and current and former military leaders but from every day Americans,” said Matt Thorn, President & CEO of OutServe-SLDN. “We urge Americans from every stripe to call and tell the Trump-Pence Administration to stop playing politics with our nation’s Armed Forces. Our trans service members deserve a Commander-in-Chief who values their commitment, their honor, their courage to this country, and their willingness to risk their lives in its defense of its freedoms. It is time for this administration’s attempt at a transgender service member ban be abandoned. We will continue our legal challenges should the Trump-Pence Administration continue down this road of discrimination and distraction.”

“We are at a critical juncture in the White House’s shameful attempt to implement a transgender military ban, and it’s essential that fair-minded Americans call and tell Donald Trump and Mike Pence to stop putting their politics ahead of our troops,” said Ashley Broadway-Mack, President of the American Military Partner Association. “Our transgender service members and their families deserve better than to be targeted and singled out by this administration for blatant, unconstitutional discrimination. It’s time this White House abandon this unconscionable transgender military ban and start honoring and supporting ALL of our nation’s brave service members.”

“What we know at Gender Justice League is what every court who has ruled on this ban has said; the transgender military ban is wrong and unconstitutional,” said Danni Askini, Executive Director of Gender Justice League, “We have members who are hard working service members and veterans who all deserve to be judged on their ability to do their jobs, not on their gender. We are calling on the Trump Administration to drop this cynical attack and do their job to support Americans willing to serve their country.”

Making clear the bipartisan opposition to the ban, the ad features quotes from Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen and Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and John McCain (R-AZ).

HRC, the American Military Partner Association, and Gender Justice League are co-organizational plaintiffs, along with nine individuals, in Karnoski v. Trump — a case brought by Lambda Legal and Outserve-SLDN, challenging the ban in court. Six separate federal courts have issued rulings blocking implementation of the ban. Barring further court action, the administration cannot implement this ban.

HRC Celebrates Women’s History Month

HRC Celebrates Women’s History Month

HRC is proud to celebrate incredible leaders throughout March to honor Women’s History Month. From champions of equality in our past, to leaders on the front lines of the movement today, women have been at the heart of the fight to make the world a better place for all.

The contributions made by lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer women including Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.), Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, Laverne Cox, Sara Ramirez, Ellen DeGeneres, Lili Elbe, Martha P. Johnson, Billie Jean King, Patrisse Cullors, Janet Mock, Geena Rocero, Alice Walker and Edith Windsor will leave an indelible mark on our efforts toward achieving full LGBTQ equality.

Just as essential to the fight for equal rights are LGBTQ allies including Hillary Clinton, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.),  Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Dolores Huerta, Janelle Monae, and Meryl Streep. They have made it their mission to speak up and advocate for a more just and equal nation.

As we reflect and honor female advocates, we also recognize the contributions of today’s youth, including former HRC Youth Ambassador Jazz Jennings and Parkland, Florida, high school student Emma González, who are living their lives fully and authentically to make the world a better place for girls and young women everywhere. These incredible young people are fighting to ensure that others can live authentically, safe from fear of stigma, persecution and gun violence.

Throughout March, HRC will lift up stories of some of these incredible advocates, renewing our commitment to making the world a better place for girls and women everywhere.
