HRC to Honor Karamo Brown of Netflix’s “Queer Eye” at 21st Annual HRC Houston Gala

Today, HRC announced the organization will honor Karamo Brown, one of the ‘Fab 5’ in Netflix’s popular television series “Queer Eye,” at the 21st Annual HRC Houston Gala next Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Marriott Marquis in Houston, Texas. Jussie Smollett (Empire, Sum of My Music) will present the HRC Visibility Award to Brown at the event which raises crucial funds in the fight for LGBTQ equality.

“As an out and proud gay man, Karamo Brown is using his incredible talent and public visibility to raise awareness and find solutions to the unique challenges LGBTQ people face,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “We are honored to have him marching alongside us as a vocal champion for equality, and we are proud to honor Karamo Brown with the HRC Visibility Award at the 21st Annual HRC Houston Gala.”

Karamo Brown is a TV personality and LGBTQ equality advocate most known for being the ‘culture expert’ in Netflix’s reboot of “Queer Eye,” where he engages the subjects in important cultural conversations that help them get to the core of understanding themselves, so they can relate to the world better. Brown began his career in 2004 as a housemate on the hit MTV reality series “The Real World,” becoming the first openly-gay African-American in the history of reality TV. Shortly after the conclusion of “The Real World,” Karamo learned he had a nine-year-old biological child, whom he gained full custody of. He later left the spotlight to become a social worker and adopted his biological sons’ half-brother.

Brown currently serves on the board for OutRight International, a leading international LGBTQI human rights organization dedicated to improving the lives of people who experience discrimination or abuse on the basis of their sexual orientation, sex characteristics, or gender identity worldwide. He also co-founded the non-profit organization, 6in10.org, which provides tailored mental health support for black gay and bisexual men in order to eradicate the 6 in 10 HIV statistic plaguing this community. In 2016, Karamo was invited by the Obama Administration to work with the White House to create policy/ legislation to support LGBTQ youth and their allies after school hours.

Brown recently spoke at the HRC Equality Convention in Washington, DC, and joined Pulse Nightclub shooting survivors and family members to lead hundreds of HRC members and supporters in the #MarchforOurLives in the nation’s capital. Brown is a graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and knew Aaron Feis — the football coach who was killed in the Parkland attack.

The HRC Visibility Award will be presented to Brown by Jussie Smollett, who is known for his groundbreaking role as tortured pop star, Jamal Lyon, in the mega-hit television series “Empire.” Smollett is also actively involved in numerous charities and community organizations. He was recently honored by the Black AIDS Institute with their “Heroes in the Struggle” award for truly making a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Smollett now sits on the board of the Black AIDS Institute, Sankofa.org, The Trayvon Martin Foundation, and the RuJohn Foundation, which supplies clothes, school materials and scholarships to children in Jamaica and the U.S. In 2016 he received the prestigious NAACP Chairman’s Award and in 2017 was honored by the AFL/CIO for his activism and using his platform to bring attention to civil rights and social justice causes.

Chad Griffin to Trump: End Your Silence on Chechen Government’s Anti-LGBTQ Crimes Against Humanity

Chad Griffin to Trump: End Your Silence on Chechen Government’s Anti-LGBTQ Crimes Against Humanity

Today, HRC released a letter from HRC President Chad Griffin to Donald Trump calling on him to end his deafening silence on the ongoing anti-LGBTQ crimes against humanity in the Russian republic of Chechnya. Griffin’s letter comes as HRC is also urging its members and supporters to contact the White House and demand Trump condemn the atrocities as “crimes against humanity.”

“Over the past year, this White House has remained unconscionably silent as men suspected of being gay or bisexual have been rounded up, tortured, imprisoned, and even killed in the Russian republic of Chechnya,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “Enough is enough. Donald Trump must end his shameful silence and unequivocally condemn these horrific atrocities for what they are — crimes against humanity.”

“We want justice for the victims in Chechnya, for their relatives and their loved ones. The Russian authorities must fulfill their duties, and start a serious investigation of this crime against humanity,” said Svetlana Zakharova, Communication Manager and Board Member of the Russian LGBT Network. “The Russian authorities have not done anything to stop the atrocities or to punish those who are responsible. We still don’t know exactly how many people suffered during this state-sponsored campaign aimed to ‘purify Chechen blood.’ The Russian LGBT Network has evacuated over 100 people from Chechnya, and it is not over.”

The letter from Griffin to Trump can be found here.

On April 1, 2017, Novaya Gazeta, a Russian independent media outlet, first broke the news that Chechen authorities rounded up and detained in secret prisons more than 100 men who were suspected of being gay or bisexual. Chechen leaders have denied these accusations, going so far as to deny the very existence of LGBTQ people in Chechnya. Nonetheless, there have been numerous verified reports of torture and at least three and possibly as many as 20 men have been killed. Chechen officials have also reportedly encouraged families to murder relatives they suspect might be gay or bisexual, something that at least one family seems to have acted on. While the initial detentions and attacks targeted suspected gay and bisexual men, the campaign has also brought about a surge in lesbian women sharing stories about humiliation, abuse, and threats they have faced from male relatives or from others. Transgender Chechens have also fled violence.

Over the past year, President Trump and this White House have refused to publicly condemn the attacks. In September, a Washington Post article quoted a State Department spokesperson who said “the United States will ‘continue to raise our concerns about this situation with Russian authorities’ and that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had written a letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about it.” That letter was never released publicly nor was it accompanied by any public statement on Chechnya. In October 2017, HRC filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the U.S. Department of State for all records regarding that letter. While the White House has remained silent, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate have passed resolutions condemning the atrocities.

The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court defines “crimes against humanity” as certain acts committed as part of “a widespread or systematic attack directed against any civilian population.” HRC and the Russian LGBT Network believe that the human rights abuses that have taken place in Chechnya over the last year are exactly that. They have been both systemic and widespread. It is also clear that Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has explicitly condoned these attacks as part of his efforts to “purify Chechen blood.”

Tim Cook on What He’d Do if He Were Mark Zuckerberg: ‘I Wouldn’t Be in The Situation’

Tim Cook on What He’d Do if He Were Mark Zuckerberg: ‘I Wouldn’t Be in The Situation’

Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke about the company’s focus on privacy in an interview with Recode on Wednesday, and responded to questions about Facebook.

Said Cook: “We could make a ton of money if we monetized our customers, if our customers were our product. We’ve elected not to do that. Privacy to us is a human right. It’s a civil liberty, and in something that is unique to America, this is like freedom of speech and freedom of the press and privacy is right up there for us. And so, we’ve always done this.”

Recode’s Kara Swisher got some laughs when she responded to a comment Cook made about using Apple’s products to watch porn.

Said Cook: “We don’t subscribe to the view that you have to let everyone in that wants to or if you don’t, you don’t believe in free speech…We’re like the guy in the corner store. What you sell in that store says something about you and if you don’t want to sell that other thing you don’t sell it. It doesn’t mean that you can’t use an iPhone to go to your browser and go to some porno site if you want to do that…”

“Nobody does that,” interjected Swisher, causing the audience and Cook to crack up.

“I’m not making fun of it!”, replied Cook.

He was then asked what he’d do if he were Mark Zuckerberg.

Said Cook: “What would I do? I wouldn’t be in the situation.”
