Gay former NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn is not happy that Cynthia Nixon, who supported her opponent, Mayor Bill De Blasio, in the 2013 Democratic primary for mayor, is running for governor of New York.
Said Quinn to the NY Post: “It’s a flight of fancy on her part. Cynthia Nixon was opposed to having a qualified lesbian become mayor of New York City. Now she wants to be an unqualified lesbian to be the governor of New York. You have to be qualified and have experience. She isn’t qualified to be the governor.”
Quinn told the paper that it’s “a time to move away from celebrity and toward progressive leadership” and said a primary was unnecessary with a governor who has accomplished much for the state.
Nixon told the paper that it was time for an outsider to get rid of “corruption” in Albany: “Her being a lesbian and my being a lesbian [is not the issue].”

Devocionario de Cuaresma: ¿Qué es el amor de Dios?
La gente considera su fe como una fuente de orientación e inspiración; esto no es diferente para las personas LGBTQ y sus familias o amigos. Durante la temporada de Cuaresma, HRC compartirá devocionarios de líderes religiosos, personas LGBTQ y aliados. La campaña busca crear un ambiente en el que las personas LGBTQ de fe y sus aliados puedan practicar las tradiciones espirituales de su fe en un ambiente acogedor e inclusivo.
La temporada de Cuaresma marca los días que conducen a la crucifixión de Jesús y la posterior resurrección. Para los cristianos, la resurrección es tanto una celebración de la vida como un recordatorio de que las personas continúan sufriendo, incluidos los miembros de la comunidad LGBTQ.

En esta oración, Pablo describe el amor de Cristo, de Dios, en tres maneras. El amor de Dios es sencillo, vasto y misterioso.
Pablo habla de nuestra necesidad de estar arraigados al amor de Dios. Las raíces se hunden y crecen en la tierra, en el suelo que está debajo de nosotros. Hay algo natural en la experiencia que Pablo nos anima a tener. Esto no es algo indefinido; es algo sólido, algo que podemos explorar. Tiene una esencia tangible. Cristo encarnó el amor de Dios en formas que no se habían experimentado antes de su nacimiento. Él dibujó en la tierra. Escupió en el barro y se frotó los ojos. Cocinó pescado y comió. Él partió el pan y sirvió el vino.
Algún tiempo atrás, solíamos cantar esta canción de adoración: “¿Qué tan alto y ancho, cuán profundo y duradero es tu amor?” * ¡Me hizo sentir que el amor de Dios es maravilloso! ¡Increíble! Cantar la verdad del amor de Dios puede tener ese efecto en una persona. La descripción del amor de Dios de Pablo me recuerda al salmista que reconoció que no hay ningún lugar donde podamos huir de la presencia de Dios y de su amor. (Salmos 139:7-10)
Pablo describe este amor que sobrepasa todo entendimiento y que no podemos comprender. Experimentar el amor de Dios de manera demostrativa e inexplicable simultáneamente es incomprensible. Vivimos este amor, fuera de nuestras mentes y dentro de nuestros cuerpos.
¿Puede el amor de Dios ser tres cosas a la vez? Hay una naturaleza integral en el amor de Dios que es imposible de entender para nuestras limitadas mentes. Es sencilla y misteriosa, conocida y desconocida. Al mismo tiempo, estamos llamados a arraigarnos al amor de Dios, un amor que nuestro limitado entendimiento no logra comprender.
Este sencillo, vasto y misterioso amor que Cristo encarna es el amor al que Dios nos ha llamado a dar en este mundo – a nuestros vecinos, amigos y a toda la creación. Estamos llamados a dar este amor a las personas con las que estamos de acuerdo y con las que no. Debemos entregar el amor de Dios incluso a las personas que votaron como nosotros y a las que no lo hicieron. No hay excepciones.
Como persona queer no se me impide recibir este amor, pero tampoco se me puede excluir de no encarnarlo y a usted tampoco. ¿Cómo sería caminar en este mundo o vivir nuestras vidas arraigados completamente y llenos de amor que se refleja y afirma en otros?
Ruego para que Dios le desafíe a abrir sus corazones al profundo, ancho e increíble amor de Dios que conocemos y deseamos entender. Amén.
*Lamentablemente, una búsqueda rápida en Google me llevó a encontrar el resto de la letra de la canción que diluye el mensaje de amor que proclama el coro. Esto me recuerda a unos Salmos que pasan de proclamar las maravillas de Dios en unas líneas a golpear a los enemigos de Dios en las siguientes.

Secretary Betsy DeVos continues to promote discrimination against transgender students
NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today condemned Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for dodging accountability when asked vital questions today about the confirmed policy of the Department of Education to no longer investigate or take action on discrimination cases involving transgender students banned from restrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender.
Rep. Mark Pocan questioned Secretary DeVos about the policy during a House Appropriations subcommittee this morning. A growing number of federal courts have ruled that Title IX protects transgender students, but Secretary Devos deflected Rep. Pocan’s question and argued that she will continue to oppose protecting transgender students until “the Supreme Court or Congress clarifies the law.”

“As Secretary DeVos fumbles through another congressional hearing, her record of walking-back LGBTQ protections and actively refusing to aid transgender students facing discrimination speaks for itself,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “It is long past time for Secretary DeVos to reverse course and clearly denounce policies that target LGBTQ students. Our Secretary of Education should be fighting for all students, not actively making life more difficult for transgender students.”
Today’s statement follows testimony before this same subcommittee last May where DeVos argued that states should have the option to decide whether schools that receive federal dollars can discriminate against LGBTQ students.
Since her controversial confirmation hearing process, which included a tie-breaking vote by Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary Betsy DeVos has fallen in line with the Trump Administration’s anti-LGBTQ agenda. During her first year, DeVos joined the President and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to rescind a guidance that provided protection to transgender students at our nation’s schools, rolled back the Office for Civil Rights’ expansive approach to investigating civil rights complaints, and hosted anti-LGBTQ groups including Focus on the Family and Family Research Council at a Department of Education event.
DeVos’ anti-LGBTQ record extends well before her confirmation as Education Secretary. From contributing more than $200,000 toward efforts to add a marriage equality ban to Michigan’s Constitution to donating money to Focus on the Family, an anti-LGBTQ organization which openly advocates for so-called “conversion therapy” practices, her record shows she will do anything to prevent LGBTQ acceptance from becoming a reality.

We expect to foster a conservative governing philosophy consisting of limited government and respect for traditional American virtues. We expect a return on our investment; we expect a good and honest government. Furthermore, we expect the Republican party to use the money to promote these policies, and yes, to win elections.”
