HRC Responds to Passage of Senate Budget Deal and Urges Congress to Protect Dreamers

HRC Responds to Passage of Senate Budget Deal and Urges Congress to Protect Dreamers

Today, the Human Rights Campaign responded to the House’s passage of the Senate budget and called on Congress to get to work immediately in protecting over one million young people from potential deportation and violence, including 75,000 LGBTQ Dreamers:

“While this budget agreement includes vital funding for health care, especially for people living with HIV and AIDS, we remain deeply concerned that millions of Dreamers are still at risk each day that Congress fails to protect them. Mitch McConnell must follow through on his promises and quickly allow a vote on the Dream Act in the Senate and Paul Ryan must do the same in the House,” said David Stacy, HRC Government Affairs Director. “More than one million Dreamers, including 75,000 LGBTQ young people, face uncertainty in the only country they’ve ever known. We will not rest until Congress protects them.”

The budget deal passed on Friday morning ends the sequester caps on domestic discretionary spending for two years, preventing devastating sequester cuts to essential HIV/AIDS programs. It includes more than $7 billion in total funding for Community Health Centers (CHCs), which are critical to HIV prevention. Because of the Trump-Pence Administration’s inaction, a fifth of the total funding for 9,800 CHCs had been in jeopardy before the agreement. LGBTQ seniors, particularly those living with HIV will benefit from elimination of the Medicare Part D “donut hole.”

In September, Donald Trump ordered an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. While Trump and congressional leaders have continuously put off finding a resolution and protecting the fate of more than one million Dreamers, the Human Rights Campaign and coalition partners have spent the past five months demanding action to save DACA.

HRC has signed on to numerous letters in support of Dreamers and the DREAM Act and members of HRC placed thousands of calls to Congress. Following Trump’s announcement in September that he intended to end DACA, HRC produced several videos of LGBTQ Dreamers to put a human face on the inhumane consequences facing over a million Dreamers.

FOX News VP John Moody: Team USA Will Lose Medals Because It’s Too Gay and Too Black

FOX News VP John Moody: Team USA Will Lose Medals Because It’s Too Gay and Too Black
John Moody

John Moody

FOX News Executive Editor and VP John Moody published a hideous editorial complaining about the more diverse make-up of this year’s U.S. Olympic team. Reacting to a recent article in the Washington Post which argued that despite the diversity the team is still “overwhelmingly white,” Moody asserted that Team USA could lose medals because it’s too gay and too black.

Wrote Moody:

Unless it’s changed overnight, the motto of the Olympics, since 1894, has been “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” It appears the U.S. Olympic Committee would like to change that to “Darker, Gayer, Different.” If your goal is to win medals, that won’t work.

A USOC official was quoted this week expressing pride (what else?) about taking the most diverse U.S. squad ever to the Winter Olympics. That was followed by a, frankly, embarrassing laundry list of how many African-Americans, Asians and openly gay athletes are on this year’s U.S. team. No sport that we are aware of awards points – or medals – for skin color or sexual orientation.

For the current USOC, a dream team should look more like the general population. So, while uncomfortable, the question probably needs to be asked: were our Olympians selected because they’re the best at what they do, or because they’re the best publicity for our current obsession with having one each from Column A, B and C?

Wrote Media Matters:

Though this is Team USA’s most diverse delegation of athletes ever, as The Washington Post reported, the U.S. Olympic Committee still has a lot of progress to make: Out of 243 athletes, two men are openly gay, “10 are African American — 4 percent — and another 10 are Asian American. The rest, by and large, are white.” Moody suggested without basis that the focus on diversity may cost Team USA medals, and speculated that athletes were given spots on the team that they didn’t earn during their trials, because of their race.

Concluded Moody: “If someone is denied a slot on a team because of prejudice, that’s one thing. Complaining that every team isn’t a rainbow of political correctness defeats the purpose of sports, which is competition. At the Olympic level, not everyone is a winner. Not everyone gets a little plastic trophy to take home. Sorry. ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’ still works better than ‘We win because we’re different.’”

Here’s Best For Britain’s Message To Those Who Say We Are Undermining Brexit

Here’s Best For Britain’s Message To Those Who Say We Are Undermining Brexit
Today the Daily Mail attacked Best for Britain, jumping on the bandwagon of the Daily Telegraph.  The Mail in its usual style comes at me, our funders and our organisation all guns blazing and now their splash has pride of place on our wall.  IDS, the thinking man’s Andrew-Bridgen-rent-a-quote, shrieks “hand the money back”.

My message to IDS and his ilk is this: thanks for your comments, but we won’t be intimidated by the likes of you and your band of ideological friends who are trying to subvert the very meaning of democracy. We have the right to at least a Parliamentary vote at the end of this, and we must push MPs to do what’s Best for Britain and ask people for the vote.

For me, democracy did not end on the day after the referendum. My view was the same before, the same the day of the referendum and same the day after. The process of leaving the EU is democratic. The government got a mandate to trigger negotiations, but not to sign them off-  they did not get a blank cheque.

The money that George Soros and thousands of small donors have donated, and continue to donate is making a massive difference.  That cash goes straight to front line campaigning.  At Best for Britain we have been campaigning to win a meaningful vote on Brexit, which we helped win, and to keep all options on the table, including staying in the European Union. That’s why we’re crowdfunding to make sure that our campaign reaches as many people as possible – we don’t have much time for our voices to be heard.

At the core, our campaigning is about empowering people to feel confident in taking a more active part in their country and their democracy. Our view is perhaps the most democratic: everyone, no matter what their view, has a right to be heard, free from intimidation by people or press that may disagree with them.

We’ve held training sessions on how to be more democratically engaged in towns and cities across the country including Hull, Manchester, Doncaster and Bridgend, Wales because we believe everyone has a right to speak their mind. Over 1,000 people have attended, deeply worried about their future and the future of our children and grandchildren. We don’t believe that’s sinister or wrong. In fact, we can’t think of anything more patriotic than worrying about our country’s future.

So if very publicly trying to help people take a more active role in our society is somehow a “secret plot” to ensure all voices are heard on the greatest issue of a generation then we will wear that badge with honour. Democracy is never done and the moment we stop defending the rights of everyone to say what they believe – even when we disagree – is an even darker future that none of us want to be a part of.

So this weekend the team will be out campaigning and working tirelessly to make sure the public is heard.  Brexit has failed the test and will make Britain poorer, less secure and that is not what people were sold.  If this was a product it would be done under the Trades Descriptions Act.  People should have the right to change their minds – that is what we are fighting for at Best for Britain, I urge you to join us and together we will beat the Brexiteer forces that threaten to ruin Britain. Join us, your country needs you.
