A Menopausal Moment? No, It’s Parkinson’s!

A Menopausal Moment? No, It’s Parkinson’s!

So, I’m in my 50s! I’ve gone through the menopause – so all those aches, pains, and names escaping me are just one of those things that happen.

Time after time there would be a joke made about forgetting a name! For me it wasn’t the name of a person, it was those ‘things’ I had been using for years. “I’m just having a menopausal moment,” I laughed.

I read articles written by others on how to overcome this annoying problem. That’s how I thought of it, only temporary, something that would rectify itself once those dratted hormones settled down. I bowed to those with far more experience and knowledge about memory problems than myself.

So I made myself link the word to an image in my mind, as you do. It was no use trying to conjure up a picture of the object itself because there it was in front of me! Teasing me with its presence. Laughing at my inability to recall its name. What did it do – this ‘thing’ that eluded me? Where was it kept? Then there was the other ‘one’. Now that had something to do with the cooker as well, but what is it called? Even now my mind is searching its recesses trying to recall the first letter. If I get that far the rest should follow. It’s flat and it can take lots of heat without burning. It is non stick. That’s it! Teflon sheet! I remember its name at last, but what a chore. I know the next time the same process will happen again and then there is no guarantee it will come as quickly. Some days it takes a hour or two before it will suddenly pop into my mind out of nowhere.

Then came that day last November; I found myself answering the door with a blank look on my face and no knowledge of the person standing in front of me. My brain was telling me something was wrong but I didn’t know what. This was not me! There was always something there previously that said, ‘Oh yes, you silly idiot I remember now!’ Not this time.

At the end of the month was my appointment with a neurologist. The doctor in our medical practice had noticed a tremor in my hand. “How long have you had it?” she asked. To be honest I couldn’t recall. It had been there a year or so probably. What did you think it was? “A side effect of having a cortisone injection,” I replied unconcerned. Knowing that the needle had been inserted close to a main nerve in my thumb, there had been the assumption on my part that he’d gone a bit too close. The look she gave me was exactly the same as the one from the neurologist when I gave her the very same answer: one of disbelief. The diagnosis didn’t take long… Parkinson’s Disease.

What link does that have to forgetfulness? Voraciously researching the internet about Parkinson’s, it comes under the heading of mild cognitive impairment. Thankfully it sounds much worse than it is (or at least I hope). These cognitive symptoms can be exaggerated by anxiety/stress or sleep problems that are caused by muscle pains at night. ‘It may be there is a problem with the passing of messages in the brain,’ the Parkinson’s UK internet site told me. That makes sense I told myself, as Dopamine is a neurotransmitter – transmitting signals in the brain. Obviously my transmitters are not all firing as they should be, a bit like an engine that’s coughing and spluttering when not enough fuel is getting to the necessary parts.

For most women it is just the side effects of the menopause. For the few like myself they were the unseen aspects of Parkinson’s. I am not a doctor. This is my own experience as someone newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.

Teachers Should Ask Children If They Are Suicidal, Says Charity Boss

Teachers Should Ask Children If They Are Suicidal, Says Charity Boss

Teachers should be prepared to ask school children if they are suicidal if they notice a change in their behaviour, a charity boss has warned.

Ged Flynn, chief executive of suicide prevention group Papyrus, said school staff should not feel embarrassed or scared to ask children about their mental health as part of a drive to cut self-harm and depression among young people.

It comes as latest figures from the charity show children as young as nine are seeking help with thoughts of suicide, with up to 40% of 11-18-year-olds contacting the charity’s HOPELineUK service complaining of being cyber-bullied.

Mr Flynn said teachers should be “open” rather than “blunt”, but said it was important for adults to “join the conversation” because children “will already be talking about it”.

In an interview with the Press Association, Mr Flynn said: “Children may not know the word ‘suicide’, so I’m not frightening teachers into doing an assembly on suicide.

“But I am saying don’t be frightened of using that word.

“If you’re worried about a young person, the reality is they’re already talking about it in their peer group. Get over yourselves, talk about it.

“They’re more likely to engage with you when they are struggling.”

Flynn said there was a need for sensitivity, and to use age-appropriate language when talking to young children who may not fully understand the permanence of death.

Children may not know the word ‘suicide’, so I’m not frightening teachers into doing an assembly on suicide.”Ged Flynn, chief executive of suicide prevention group Papyrus

But Flynn said it was crucial to shatter the taboo of suicide by engaging with children about the concept.

“The burden on schools is clear if we want them to be teaching, social working and counselling,” he said. “It’s a tall order.

“But I’m not asking teachers to take on an extra burden, I’m saying acknowledge what good stuff you’re already doing – acknowledge that you’re already engaging readily as the PE teacher with the young lad who aspires to be the Welsh rugby team captain, or the England football team manager.

“You’re already doing great rapport-building with him. If he changes his behaviour, ask him: this is not like you, are you thinking about suicide?

“If he’s not, he knows that if he is he might come to you. If he is, he will readily say: Yes I am can we talk about it?”

Asked whether he envisaged some reluctance from parents about the prospect of discussing suicide among young children, Flynn said: “My message to those parents is: wouldn’t you prefer that we prepare your child that he or she may be a risk to themselves than to have a police officer knock on your door and say: ‘I’m really sorry…’?”

Young Voters Are ‘Bored’ Of Brexit But Social Conservatism Will Damage The Tories, Warns Liz Truss

Young Voters Are ‘Bored’ Of Brexit But Social Conservatism Will Damage The Tories, Warns Liz Truss

Young voters are “bored of Brexit” and are more likely to be put off voting Tory if the party is seen as socially conservative than by its commitment to leaving the EU, Liz Truss has said.

The chief secretary to the Treasury said the Conservatives had to “communicate our message better” to appeal to the younger generation.

“The way we are going to inspire people is by talking about those ideas even if they argue with us, even if we don’t like them, it is slightly about being a bit disagreeable and a bit offensive sometimes and being prepared to offend some people,” she said.

Speaking to members of the liberal conservative Bright Blue think-tank in a pub in south London on Tuesday evening, Truss said her experience of talking to students revealed Brexit was not the main barrier to them voting Tory.

The South West Norfolk MP said they told her: “To be honest we are bored of Brexit, it’s not really affecting our lives. What we really care about is crime, we are really concerned about things acid attacks in London.”

Asked if Brexit was damaging the Tory brand with younger voters, Truss added: “I would say more that it’s being seen as not socially liberal that’s more of an issue.

“I think we need to make the case, and this is my point, we need to get through Brexit, and make the case that we do believe in those values that not just appeal to youth in urban areas but also appeal to my constituency in South West Norfolk.”

Truss campaigned for ‘Remain’ during the referendum but has since said she would now vote ‘Leave’.

She added that voters in her seat “want to live in a free country” and “don’t want to live in a Corbynist-Marxist state”.

“I dispute this idea we can’t win Mansfield and Battersea, or we have to choose between Norfolk and Nottingham, we don’t,” she said.

“These ideas have a universal appeal. We need to positive about them. Not defensive and on the back foot.”

Truss also warned there was “no gratitude in politics” as people “never vote on the basis of what you already done for them, they vote on what they think the future is going to be”.

She added: “No one successfully makes the case for the status quo.”

Ministers are predicting a “wipeout” of flagship Tory councils in the local elections this year, in part due to the sizeable ‘Remain’ vote in the capital, amid fears that the party has failed to prepare for a fresh battle with Jeremy Corbyn.

The gloomy forecasts came as a senior backbencher told HuffPost UK that Theresa May would inevitably face intense pressure to quit if the party lost key town halls.
