Twitter Reveals 49 Russian ‘Troll Factory’ Accounts Tried To Sway Brexit Vote

Twitter Reveals 49 Russian ‘Troll Factory’ Accounts Tried To Sway Brexit Vote
Twitter has found 49 accounts linked to a notorious Russian “troll factory” which were sending out messages about the EU referendum during the 2016 campaign.

The company’s UK head of public policy, Nick Pickles, told a House of Commons committee that the accounts linked to the St Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency amounted to less than 0.005% of those tweeting about the referendum, and received “very low levels of engagement” from other users.

The announcement came in a hearing of the Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee’s inquiry into fake news – taking evidence from internet companies YouTube, Facebook, Google and Twitter in Washington DC.

YouTube told the cross-party committee it had found no evidence of Russian sources using ads on its video-sharing service to attempt to interfere in the 2016 referendum.

Juniper Downs, YouTube’s global head of public policy, said that the company would be ready to help further investigations into possible Russian attempts to influence votes in Britain.

Meanwhile, Facebook said it had taken down “thousands” of fake accounts in the run-up to 2017 elections in the UK, France and Germany – although they were not necessarily aimed at spreading false information.

Pickles told the committee that Twitter had identified “a very small number of suspected Internet Research Agency-linked accounts”.

“Forty-nine such accounts were active during the referendum campaign, which represents less than 0.005% of the total number of accounts that tweeted about the referendum,” he said.

“Those accounts collectively posted 942 tweets, representing less than 0.02% of the total tweets posted about the referendum during the campaign. Those tweets collectively were retweeted 461 times and liked 637 times.”

This amounted to fewer than 10 likes and 13 retweets per account, which was “a very low level of engagement”, he said.

The cross-party panel of MPs was also using the trip across the Atlantic to meet senior senators who have been investigating allegations of Russian interference and collusion in the American presidential election won by Donald Trump.

YouTube has previously informed a US Senate committee of 18 channels it discovered which were linked to the Internet Research Agency “content farm”.

In September, Facebook bowed to pressure and provided the contents of 3,000 ads bought by a Russian agency to the US committee.

Asked whether any similar searches could be undertaken in relation to UK elections, Ms Downs told the committee: “Absolutely, we are happy to co-operate with the UK Government’s investigations into whether there was any interference in elections in the UK.

“We have conducted a thorough investigation around the Brexit referendum and found no evidence of interference.

“We looked at all advertisements with any connection to Russia and we found no evidence of our services being used to interfere in the Brexit referendum and we are happy to co-operate with any further efforts.”

Facebook’s head of global policy management, Monika Bickert, told the MPs that it had a strict policy of people signing up using their real names and took action to tackle fake profiles.

“In the run-up to the French election, the German election, the UK election we were using our technical tools to remove thousands of fake accounts,” she said.

“Not that those were necessarily related to spreading disinformation or to spreading information about the election, but they were fake accounts and we are using those technical tools to reduce the chance that they might be used to spread disinformation.”

Committee chairman Damian Collins last year criticised Facebook and Twitter over their replies to the committee’s investigation.

Under questioning from the MPs, Google vice-president of news Richard Gingras acknowledged that so-called “fake news” was harmful to users and to society.

He gave the example of bogus cancer cures found by patients searching the internet for information about their conditions.

Mr Gingras said Google was “in the trust business” and felt “an extraordinary sense of responsibility” about the reliability of information highlighted by its search engine and news app.

“The loyalty of our users is based on their continued trust in us,” he said. “To the extent they don’t trust us, they will stop using our products and our business will collapse.

“We believe strongly in having an effective democracy, we believe strongly in supporting free expression and supporting a sustainable high-quality journalism eco-system to make sure that quality information is out there.”

Mr Gingras acknowledged that Google’s autofill function, which suggests possible search phrases as users type, sometimes produces offensive suggestions in response to phrases like “Jews are…” – in part due to “malicious actors” seeking to game the system.

But he said Google was constantly working to correct them.

Ms Downs recognised concerns over YouTube’s “up next” feature, which has come under attack for suggesting inappropriate videos to users.

“We recognise that there is work to do on our recommendation engine in terms of making sure we are surfacing the right news content to our users,” she said.

HRC Mourns Tonya Harvey, a Transgender Woman Murdered in New York

HRC Mourns Tonya Harvey, a Transgender Woman Murdered in New York

HRC mourns the loss of Tonya Harvey, a transgender woman of color who was fatally shot in Buffalo, New York, on Tuesday.

The Buffalo News reported that the shooting occurred in late afternoon on a dead-end street. Police have not released any further details about the incident, but confirmed they are looking into the incident as a possible hate crime.

Ashley Breathe, a friend of Harvey’s, expressed her condolences on Facebook, writing: “I knew her since I started transitioning, she was so sweet and loving.”

Harvey, 35, is the city’s first confirmed homicide victim of the year, according to the newspaper’s account. She is the third known homicide of a transgender person in the U.S. this year.

A spokesperson with the Erie County District Attorney’s Office told the paper that they are “extremely concerned about a spike in homicides of transgender people across the country”  and will be “looking into whether or not this is a potential hate crime.”

HRC Foundation and the Trans People of Color Coalition released a report documenting the senseless acts of violence that made 2017 the deadliest year on record for transgender people, particularly for trans women of color.

Two British ‘Beatles’ Islamic State Fighters Captured In Syria

Two British ‘Beatles’ Islamic State Fighters Captured In Syria

Two British Islamic State militants known for their role in the torture and killing of Western hostages have been captured by Syrian Kurdish fighters, according to US officials.

The men were part of a group of four militants known as ‘The Beatles’ for their British accents and have been named as Alexanda Kotey, 34, and El Shafee Elsheikh, 29, reports the New York Times.

Both have already been stripped of their UK citizenship.

The most infamous of the ‘Beatles’ was Jihadi John – aka Mohammed Emwazi -who decapitated a number of hostages in IS propaganda videos.

He was killed in an airstrike in 2015.

The US State Department sanctioned Kotey in January 2017, saying he was a guard for the “Beatles” and “likely engaged in the group’s executions and exceptionally cruel torture methods, including electronic shock and waterboarding.”

Kotey had also acted as a recruiter and was responsible for recruiting several British nationals to join the militant group, reports Reuters.

In March 2017, the State Department sanctioned Elsheikh, saying he was “said to have earned a reputation for waterboarding, mock executions, and crucifixions while serving as an ISIS jailer.”

The most notorious of the four was Mohammed Emwazi, known as “Jihadi John,” an executioner of hostages made famous by Islamic State videos of beheadings.

A US-British missile strike believed to have killed Emwazi, a British citizen of Arab origin, was months in preparation but came together at lightning speed in 2015 in the Syrian town of Raqqa, according to U.S. officials.

Emwazi became the public face of Islamic State and a symbol of its brutality after appearing in videos showing the murders of U.S. journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley, U.S. aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig, British aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning, Japanese journalist Kenji Goto and other hostages.

In December the newly-installed UK Defence Secretary said Britons who have travelled abroad to fight for the so-called Islamic State should be “eliminated” and not allowed to return home.

Gavin Williamson said: “A dead terrorist can’t cause any harm to Britain.

He told the Daily Mail: “I do not believe that any terrorist, whether they come from this country or any other, should ever be allowed back to this country.

“We should do everything we can do to destroy and eliminate that threat.”
