DEATH OF GAY CULTURE. London’s Financial Times discovers that Grindr and other social apps are destroying gay bars: “The Black Cap, the George & Dragon, Madame Jojo’s and the Candy Bar: the list of LGBT bars that have closed in London goes on and on. Since 2006, the UK capital has lost more than half its gay bars and clubs, falling from 125 to 53 in just over a decade, according to research from the Urban Laboratory at University College London.”
WORST PASSENGER OF THE DAY. Valerie Curbelo. ‘A local Portland news outlet, KOIN 6, reports that the passenger, Valerie Curbelo, tampered the smoke detector in one of the plane’s bathrooms and smoked. After a flight attendant discovered what Curbelo had done, they entered the bathroom and attempted to return Curbelo to her seat. Curbelo then became agitated and confronted the flight attendant. “I have a destination for myself, and I need to go there,” Curbelo says in a video taken by another passenger. “I swear if you don’t … land, I will f—ing kill everybody on this f—ing plane!”‘
CARDS AGAINST HUMANITY. Mit einem überraschenden Besuch des Weihnachtsmarkts an der Berliner Gedächtniskirche hat Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) der Opfer des Terroranschlags vor einem Jahr gedacht.
Sie kam am Dienstagabend für eine rund 30-minütige Visite zum Breitscheidplatz, wo sie auch den Weihnachtsmarkt besuchte.
Hinterbliebene der Opfer des Terroranschlags hatten sich zuvor über die aus ihrer Sicht mangelnde Fürsorge des Staates nach dem Anschlag beklagt. Sie warfen Merkel in einem offenen Brief Untätigkeit und politisches Versagen vor.
An der Stelle des Anschlags, wo immer wieder Blumen abgelegt und Kerzen angezündet werden, verharrte Merkel zusammen mit dem Chef des Berliner Schaustellerverbandes, Michael Roden, und dem Vorsitzenden der Arbeitsgemeinschaft City, Klaus-Jürgen Meier. Anschließend legten sie jeder eine weiße Rose nieder.
Dass die ausgelassen wirkenden Bilder, die von Merkels Besuch entstanden, die Kritiker ruhig stellen werden, ist derweil unwahrscheinlich.
Die Kanzlerin spricht mit Betroffenen
Auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt unterhielt sich die Kanzlerin mit Passanten, Besuchern und Budenbetreibern. Sie wollte zwischen Glühweinständen und Bratwurstbuden auch ihre Solidarität mit den Betroffenen ausdrücken.
Merkel sprach auch mit Susanne Wollenschläger, an deren Stand zwei Menschen gestorben waren, sowie mit dem Schausteller Max Müller, dessen Stand komplett zerstört worden war.
Am Stand Berliner Weihnachtsterrassen, besser bekannt als “Pufferelse”, ließ sich die Kanzlerin einen Glühwein einschenken – allerdings alkoholfrei. Beim Besitzer des Standes, Axel Kaiser, und seinen Mitarbeitern bedankte sie sich für ihren Einsatz vor einem Jahr.
An Kaisers Stand wurden damals leicht verletzte Opfer versorgt. Kaiser berichtete, wie er Polizisten weinen sah. Den Besuch der Kanzlerin bezeichnete er als tolle Geste und Zeichen, dass der Weihnachtsmarkt sicher sei.
12 Menschen waren hier gestorben
Bei dem nicht angekündigten Besuch informierte sich Merkel auch bei Polizisten der mobilen Wache. Nach dem Attentat waren auf vielen Weihnachtsmärkten die Sicherheitsvorkehrungen erhöht worden.
Bei dem Anschlag mit einem entführten Lastwagen tötete der islamistische Terrorist Anis Amri am Abend des 19. Dezember vergangenen Jahres 12 Menschen und verletzte etwa 70. Amri wurde vier Tage später auf der Flucht in Italien von Polizisten erschossen.
An der zentralen Gedenkveranstaltung zum Terroranschlag nimmt neben Merkel in der kommenden Woche auch Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier teil. Steinmeier wird bei der religionsübergreifenden Andacht am Morgen des 19. Dezembers in der Gedächtniskirche direkt am Tatort sprechen. Merkel gehört nicht zu den Rednern.
Die Kritik wird derweil nur lauter
Während Merkel den Weihnachtsmarkt besuchte, wurde auch in der SPD Kritik am Krisenmanagement der Kanzlerin laut.
Der Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für die Opfer des Anschlags auf einen Berliner Weihnachtsmarkt, Kurt Beck (SPD), äußerte für die Kritik am Umgang der Bundeskanzlerin mit den Angehörigen der Opfer am Dienstag Verständnis.
Auch von Angela Merkel (CDU) sei ein Treffen mit den Angehörigen erwartet worden, sagte Beck der “Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung” (Mittwoch). Die Betroffenen hätten das Gefühl, “dass ihr Opfer nicht ausreichend gewürdigt worden ist”.

According to Honey, the woman texted Faith:
“Hi Faith! This is McKenna from last night. I was reaching out to you about maternity photos. I went through your personal Instagram account to get your photography business account and on your personal page I saw that you had a pride flag. Are you gay or do you have family that’s gay?”
When Faith confirmed that she is gay, McKenna replied:
“I see, OK, well don’t worry about the photos then. I don’t want someone who’s gay to take my pictures. It’s just not right. I’m against it and the last thing I need is to allow my 5 year old child to think that being gay is OK/right because I don’t want them to be influenced by people like you. I’m sorry that you think this lifestyle is OKAY and acceptable. Take care, Faith.”
Faith shared the exchange on Twitter, asking followers to “RT & share this to show people that hatred & discrimination still exists & it NEEDS to stop.”

“Manchmal ist eine Abtreibung die einzige Lösung in einem Konflikt”, sagt die Medizinerin Kristina Hänel. “Ich betrachte es als meine Pflicht, diesen Menschen zu helfen.”
Vor kurzem hat ein Gericht die Gießenerin wegen unerlaubter Werbung für Abtreibung zu einer Geldstrafe von 6000 Euro verurteilt. Hänel hatte auf der Webseite ihrer Praxis darauf hingewiesen, dass sie Abtreibungen anbietet.
Das aber verbietet der Paragraph 219a des Strafgesetzbuches. Kristina Hänel startet daher eine Petition, um den Paragraphen zu streichen.
“Der Paragraph 219a ist veraltet und überflüssig. Er behindert das Anrecht von Frauen auf sachliche Informationen”, schreibt Hänel im Petitionstext.
Am Dienstag hat die 61-Jährige ihre Petition in Berlin an Bundestagsabgeordnete überreicht. Mehr als 150.000 Unterstützer haben sie inzwischen unterzeichnet. Nun sei die Politik gefordert, sagte Hänel.

Union will am Paragraphen festhalten
Einige Politiker sind durchaus gewillt, den Paragraphen abzuschaffen.
“Wir sagen Ja zur Entkriminalisierung von Schwangerschaftsabbrüchen”, schrieb Linke-Chefin Katja Kipping am Dienstag auf Twitter.
Grünen-Abgeordnete Ulle Schauws lobte: “Kristina Hänels Kampf für eine selbstbestimmte Entscheidung von Frauen ist bewundernswert. Wir Grünen plädieren für eine Streichung von Paragraph 219a”.
Auch FDP-Fraktionsvize Katja Suding findet: “Paragraph 219a macht sachliche Aufklärung über einen Schwangerschaftsabbruch unnötig schwer”. Ihre Partei unterstützt die Abschaffung von 219a ebenfalls.
Die sozialdemokratische Gesundheits- und Gleichstellungssenatorin Dilek Kolat sagte der “taz”: “Frauen haben sich in Deutschland das Recht auf Schwangerschaftsabbruch erkämpft. Dass darüber nicht informiert werden darf, ist absurd. Der Paragraph muss weg, und zwar schleunigst.“
Anders sieht das allerdings die Union: “Die CDU/CSU-Bundestagsfraktion hält am Werbeverbot für Schwangerschaftsabbrüche nach Paragraphen 219a StGB grundsätzlich fest”, erklärt die rechtspolitische Sprecherin der CDU/CSU-Bundestagsfraktion Elisabeth Winkelmeier-Becker auf der Webseite der Union.
“Es darf kein Geschäftsmodell gefördert werden, das auf der Tötung ungeborenen Lebens beruht”, schreibt sie. Wer den Paragraphen ersatzlos aufheben möchte, müsse in Zukunft mit offener Werbung für Abtreibung im Internet, Fernsehen und in Zeitschriften rechnen, meinen die Konservativen.
Wie die rechtspopulistische AfD zu Schwangerschaftsabbrüchen steht, lässt eines ihrer Wahlplakate erahnen: “Neue Deutsche? Machen wir selber!” konnte man im Vorfeld der Bundestagswahl an zahlreichen Straßenlampen in der Bundesrepublik lesen.
Zudem ist AfD-Vizevorsitzende Beatrix von Storch beim “Marsch für das Leben”, bei dem jedes Jahr in Berlin Tausende gegen Abtreibung und Sterbehilfe demonstrieren, mehrfach vorneweg gegangen.

Hänel: Gesetz verhindert keinen Schwangerschaftsabbruch
Der Paragraph 219a des Strafgesetzbuches hat eine dunkle Vergangenheit: Er wurde 1933 von der NSDAP eingeführt:
“Wer zu Zwecken der Abtreibung Mittel, Gegenstände oder Verfahren öffentlich ankündigt oder anpreist oder solche Mittel oder Gegenstände an einem allgemein zugängliche Ort ausstellt, wird mit Gefängnis bis zu zwei Jahren oder mit Geldstrafe bestraft.” (Quelle: Reichsgesetzblatt vom 29. Mai, 1933)
Wer glaubt, die Gesetzgeber von 1933 hätten beim Erlass von 219a einzig und allein den Schutz des ungeborenen Lebens im Sinn gehabt, sollte sich auch ein anderes Gesetz aus der NS-Zeit anschauen: Das „Gesetz zur Verhütung erbkranken Nachwuchses“ ermöglichte es, als vermeintlich minderwertig befundenes Leben durch Zwangsabtreibung zu beenden und “rassisch Minderwertige” zu sterilisieren.
Wie kann es sein, dass ein Relikt aus der Nazi-Zeit im Jahr 2017 immer noch das Selbstbestimmungsrecht von Frauen beschneidet?
Ärztin Hänel sieht darin jedenfalls keinen Sinn. “Der Paragraph 219 verhindert keinen einzigen Schwangerschaftsabbruch”, versichert die Ärztin. “Selbst in Ländern, in denen die Todesstrafe darauf steht, finden Frauen einen Weg, abzutreiben.”
Das Abtreibungsrecht in Deutschland ist ohnehin sehr streng reguliert.
► Denn ein Schwangerschaftsabbruch ist in Deutschland nach wie vor illegal. Wenn die Schwangere jedoch bestimmte Voraussetzungen erfüllt, bleibt er straffrei.
Wer in Deutschland abtreiben will, muss eine sogenannte Schwangerschaftskonfliktberatung in Anspruch nehmen. Erst danach bekommt die Patientin eine Bescheinigung und eine Liste mit Ärzten, die einen Abbruch durchführen.

Abtreibung soll nicht als etwas Normales betrachtet werden
Wieso aber sollte sich eine Frau nicht vorab darüber informieren dürfen, welcher Arzt ihr weiterhelfen kann? Diese Frage stellt sich Helmut Satzger, Professor für Strafrecht an der LMU München.
“219a soll dazu beitragen, dass ein Schwangerschaftsabbruch nicht als etwas Normales betrachtet wird”, erklärt Jurist Satzger das Argument für den Paragraphen. “Wenn öffentlich Werbung für Abtreibung gemacht werden dürfte, könnte der Eindruck entstehen, dass Schwangerschaftsabbrüche im Allgemeinen von der Rechtsordnung gebilligt werden.”
Allerdings plädiert auch Satzger dafür, den Paragraphen abzuändern: “Anpreisen sollte – wenn überhaupt – als Ordnungswidrigkeit geahndet werden, nicht als Strafbestand.”
Ebenso sei es möglich, dass ein entsprechendes Revisionsurteil im Verfahren gegen Kristina Hänel die Auslegung des Paragraphen restriktiv festsetzt. Dann wäre klar, welche Angaben zum Schwangerschaftsabbruch Ärzte machen dürfen und welche nicht.
Wie die “taz” berichtet, wollen sich FDP, Grüne, Linke und SPD am Mittwochmorgen zu einer gemeinsamen Arbeitsgruppe zusammenfinden. “Wir werden jetzt mit den anderen Fraktionen eine gemeinsame interfraktionelle Initiative ausloten“, sagte die stellvertretende Fraktionsvorsitzende der SPD, Eva Högl, der Zeitung.

The first hearings of the long-awaited inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire have wrapped up after two days of trying to address questions of how survivors and relatives of those who died will be heard.
The procedural sessions focussed on issues including how documents should be disclosed to “core participants”, including residents, survivors and relatives of those who died in the blaze on June 14 that killed 71 people.
But the most emotive issue was whether the inquiry chair should be helped by a panel, drawn from the local community, and what powers it should have.
The Metropolitan Police revealed its investigation was considering charges of misconduct in a public office, meaning it is looking at whether to prosecute individuals and not just bodies such as the council.
Peter Weatherby, one of the lawyers representing survivors of the blaze, said the inquiry should move from its central London base in Holborn to “closer to where the disaster occurred” in Kensington.
Barrister Leslie Thomas, who is also representing survivors, gave a passionate speech about why those on the inquiry should be more diverse, contrasting the “homogenised group” of lawyers on it with the victims of whom he said: “You couldn’t get a more diverse group of people.”
The Fire Brigades Union said it opposed the appointment of a former senior fire officer as an expert witness to the inquiry. Martin Seaward, barrister for the FBU, which has campaigned against cuts and station closures, told the inquiry that Steve McQuirk had supported and implemented changes to the fire service as a chief in Manchester and was always “opposite end of the table” to the FBU. “He would strive to show that deregulation, cuts and closures were irrelevant to what happened at Grenfell,” Seaward said.
Lawyer Michael Mansfield argued aggressively for a panel to sit alongside Moore-Bick that had the power to make decisions, rather than one that merely consults with him. The inquiry chair made comments some thought suggested he favoured the latter option.
The lawyer representing Rydon, the company that refurbished the tower before the blaze, warned against “unstructured or chaotic” disclosure of evidence. Stuart Catchpole described another inquiry he had appeared before that decided to “to disclose documents almost as soon as they were received”. “It made it impossible ― I can say impossible ― for anyone meaningfully to get on top of that evidence,” he said.
The inquiry heard evidence that hinted at the sheer size of documents that it would have to consider. By November 8, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea had given the police 1,516,427 documents relating to Grenfell, its lawyer told Tuesday’s hearing.
The Key Moment
On Monday, lawyers representing victims of the fire described in emotive terms, with one, Allison Munroe, saying: “We also have to be very, very much alive to the fact that this disaster happened… within a pocket of one of the richest boroughs in London… That is a reality that cannot be ignored.”″
But human rights lawyer Michael Mansfield was the most dramatic, calling the fire “a national atrocity” shortly after he stood to speak.
He said:
“How on Earth, in the 21st century, in one of the richest boroughs of the United Kingdom, can a block like this just go up in flames with so many casualties involved? “I do of course include those who died in the block, but the casualties are far greater than that, that is the people who live around the immediate vicinity, but far greater than that, because everyone who lives in a tower block will have been affected by that. “In fact, everybody has a collective responsibility, and that is the way in which, in a sense, the system was shaken at that point. Everybody said to themselves: well, if it can happen to them, it can happen to me. Therefore, the need to generate and regenerate trust began the moment the fire took place. “But there is a slight reflection backwards, which I mention at this stage. I know it’s in the list of issues, but this had been predicted, or at least the danger of fire had been predicted. So even before the fire, people who lived in the block – and it’s a very, you have heard, diverse community in its own right – as well as neighbouring blocks had actually made warnings, given warnings of this kind of thing.”

Sir Martin retired on Tuesday, saying he would respond in writing to what he had heard.
There were hopes the inquiry could produce its first report by Easter but these were dashed earlier this year after the scale of the job ahead was revealed.
The inquiry is set to interview around 500 witnesses, many of whom must give statements first to the police, whose investigation is separate.
“Taking statements from such a large number of people, many of whom have been traumatised by their experience, is a time-consuming, but essential, process which has yet to be completed,” the inquiry said in a statement last month.
There is no confirmed date for the next hearing.
