Boris Johnson’s Tweet Shows Theresa May Has Merely Postponed A Row With Brexit Tories

Boris Johnson’s Tweet Shows Theresa May Has Merely Postponed A Row With Brexit Tories

After so spectacularly crashing the negotiations on Monday, just getting the car back on the road with the engine running was enough to generate cheers from Tory MPs.

Theresa May’s early morning trek to Brussels after a night of repairing her conked-out deal gave her the result she wanted, and everyone can now move on to round two of these Brexit talks.

But if May thinks the draft agreement will stop any more sabotage from people back home, she could well be mistaken – especially when hard-core Brexiteers begin looking under the bonnet.

This deal has the feel of a George Osborne Budget about it: Looks good initially, but wait for the day two headlines.

On the face of it, the agreement has been welcomed by all the right people.

Brexit-supporting Cabinet minister Michael Gove said May had “won” in her negotiations with Brussels.

Suella Fernandes, chair of the influential European Research Group of Tory eurosceptics, described it as “pragmatic and flexible”, while former head of Vote Leave Matthew Elliott effused that it was “superb news to wake up to”.

But beneath the exclamation mark laden tweets and virtual pats on the back, some of the older heads in the Brexit world are worried.

Boris Johnson took to Twitter to caveat his initial welcoming of the deal.

Replying to a photo posted of him meeting with May on Thursday afternoon – an attempt to ensure the Foreign Secretary was seen to have signed off on the deal, Johnson tweeted: “Yes, great meeting with PM…found her totally determined that ‘full alignment’ means compatibility with taking back control of our money, laws and borders.”

John Redwood, whose eurosceptism dates back to him campaigning for out in the 1975 referendum, said “a good deal has to be better than this”.

Former Northern Ireland Secretary Owen Paterson said that while this is a “big improvement” on the version torpedoed by the DUP on Monday, there are “still problematic areas”.

Veteran Eurosceptic Sir Bill Cash described it as a “landmark document” – but that is more because it gets the UK onto trade talks and one step closer to actual Brexit than for anything actually in the agreement. On the detail, Sir Bill said the European Scrutiny Committee, which he chairs, “will be looking at that.”

Sign up for HuffPost UK’s Brexit Briefing – sent straight to your inbox every Thursday.

One person who has gone through the draft agreement line-by-line is Martin Howe. The Brexit-backing QC is chair of the Lawyers for Britain, and has written extensively on EU law.

Speaking to HuffPost UK, he flagged up several areas of concern for those who want the UK to have a clean break from the EU.

“I have major concerns over the continuing role of the ECJ, as it will still have power to give judgments which alter the law, thereby requiring our courts strike down Acts of Parliament.

“This is a major constitutional issue.

“This creates an effective backdoor for eight years for a foreign court to influence UK law.

“Even after those eight years a significant body of case law will have built up meaning its influence will continue. I can’t think of any precedent in international law of courts of one treaty party making decisions which bind another country which is party to a treaty.”

The continued power of the ECJ to have an impact and influence on laws in the UK is a hill many Tories are prepared to get at least extremely wounded on.

Speaking last week ahead of this latest flurry of activity, a leading Tory Eurosceptic told HuffPost UK that while a possible financial settlement of €40billion was a “pinprick”, the “real battle will be over the ECJ.”

The main fight dominating the talks this week was not over the role of foreign judges of course, but how to keep Northern Ireland’s border with Ireland invisible.

In the coming weeks, much of the talk will be about the true meaning of paragraph 49 of the draft agreement:

The United Kingdom remains committed to protecting North-South cooperation and to its guarantee of avoiding a hard border. Any future arrangements must be compatible with these overarching requirements. The United Kingdom’s intention is to achieve these objectives through the overall EU-UK relationship. Should this not be possible, the United Kingdom will propose specific solutions to address the unique circumstances of the island of Ireland. In the absence of agreed solutions, the United Kingdom will maintain full alignment with those rules of the Internal Market and the Customs Union which, now or in the future, support North-South cooperation, the all-island economy and the protection of the 1998 Agreement.

Former Brexit Minister David Jones summed up the concerns about that section when he appeared on BBC Radio 4 on Friday lunchtime:

“The worry about that of course is that that could well relate to very important areas, for example agriculture, which we would want to throw into the mix in negotiating a free trade agreement with a third country…and if this were to persist then it could severely handicap our ability to enter into those free trade agreements. So I think we do need to see that particular provision refined.”

Howe agrees that this section is worrying, and told HuffPost UK: “This depends on how the EU interpret it.

“They will put clauses into the free trade agreement which will limit what the UK can do in certain sectors, including limiting our ability to import goods from third countries which will interfere with our ability to conclude free trade agreements.”

If the EU does present the UK with a list of sectors it believes needs to remain aligned with its rules, May will be forced to make the decision she is currently avoiding – i.e. what kind of Brexit she actually wants.

If she decides to accept the EU’s demands, Johnson may decide that is the moment to walk, knowing he has an army of eurosceptics behind him who could help wrestle the steering wheel free from May and put him in the driving seat.

As it is, May has kept the car on the track with the engine ticking over, but no one is quite sure what has been put into the Sat-Nav.

Jurassic World trailer

The trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has arrived, with dinosaur stampedes, ecological crisis, and a strapping Chris Pratt.

The Guardian writes:

As already revealed in a tasty little featurette, Fallen Kingdom retains the two stars of the first Jurassic World film – Chris Pratt as dinosaur trainer Owen Grady, and Bryce Dallas Howard as former park manager Claire Dearing, who has since founded the Dinosaur Protection Group – but has a new director: JA Bayona of The Orphanage and The Impossible renown, with Colin Trevorrow, the director of Jurassic World, retaining a writing credit.

According to EW magazine, Fallen Kingdom is set several years after the collapse of the dinosaur park in Jurassic World, when an erupting volcano threatens to wipe out the prehistoric creatures now roaming wild on the island. Dearing, now on the side of the angels, enlists Grady to help as she returns to Isla Nublar to try and save the dinos.

Palestinian Shot Dead In ‘Day Of Rage’ Clashes After Donald Trump’s Jerusalem Decision

Palestinian Shot Dead In ‘Day Of Rage’ Clashes After Donald Trump’s Jerusalem Decision

At least one Palestinian has been shot dead and scores more have been injured in clashes with Israeli troops on a “day of rage” on Friday against US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Across the Arab and Muslim worlds, thousands more demonstrators took to the streets on Friday, the Muslim holy day, expressing solidarity with the Palestinians and outrage at Trump’s reversal of decades of US policy.

Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian man near the Gaza border, the first confirmed death in two days of unrest, reports Reuters.

video montage of campaign speeches on the issue by the three predecessors.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Friday it would still be up to the Israelis and Palestinians to hammer out all other issues surrounding the city in future talks.

“With respect to the rest of Jerusalem, the president … did not indicate any final status for Jerusalem. He was very clear that the final status, including the borders, would be left to the two parties to negotiate and decide.”

Still, some Muslim countries view the Trump administration’s motives with particular suspicion. As a candidate he proposed banning all Muslims from entering the United States, and in office he has tried to block entry by citizens of several Muslim-majority states. Last week he tweeted anti-Muslim videos by a British far-right group.

In Ramallah, the seat of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Palestinian Authority, the leader’s religious affairs adviser said Trump’s stance was an affront to Islam and Christianity alike.

“America has chosen to elect a President that has put it in enmity with all Muslims and Christians,” said the advisor, Mahmoud al-Habbash.

In Iran, which has never recognised Israel and supports anti-Israel militants, demonstrators burned pictures of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while chanting “Death to the Devil”. Opposition to the US move has united Iran’s pragmatist faction, which supports greater openness to the outside world, behind hardliners that oppose it.

In Cairo, capital of Egypt, a US ally which has a peace treaty with Israel, hundreds of protesters who had gathered in Al-Azhar mosque and outside in its courtyard chanted “Jerusalem is Arab! O Trump, you madman, the Arab people are everywhere!”

The imam leading Friday prayer at Al-Azhar said the US plan to move its embassy to Jerusalemwas a “terrorist decision” that would add another settlement to those of Israel.

Large demonstrations also took place in Jordan, Tunisia, Somalia, Yemen, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Australian ambassador proposal

Australian ambassador proposal

There was no flash mob, minimal surprise, no getting down on a knee, but the emotion comes through nonetheless in this adorably proper proposal by the Australian ambassador to France Berndan Berne to his longtime partner Thomas Marti.

Said Berne, standing in front of the Eiffel Tower: “As ambassador to France, this is a great day for my country Australia which has passed marriage for all. But also for me personally. Now it’s my turn to confirm my relationship with my partner of 11 years, Thomas.”

With endearing nervousness, Berne then took the plunge, entering his apartment with a small aside, “deep breath.”

Today was a great day for Australia and for me. HE SAID YES! #MarriageEquality pic.twitter.com/liaXiw0FYh

— Brendan Berne (@AusAmbFR) December 7, 2017

The Local adds:

Marti is a Swiss-Australian who works for Australia’s foreign affairs and trade ministry, according to the embassy.

The couple met on a tram in Amsterdam and speak French at home, embassy spokesman Romain Parlier told AFP.

The tweet came less than four hours after the same-sex marriage bill sailed through parliament in Canberra.

Ashley Graham’s Italian Vogue Shoot Was Photoshop-Free And Emphasised Self-Love

Ashley Graham’s Italian Vogue Shoot Was Photoshop-Free And Emphasised Self-Love
For #TheCelebrationIssue, Italian Vogue included photoshop-free images in a lingerie feature focusing on body positive activist and model Ashley Graham.
A photoshop free editorial may not seem revolutionary – it shouldn’t even be a point of conversation in the era of #nofilter – but sadly, for many magazines showing an unedited woman’s body is a no-no.

Italian Vogue has always been synonymous with haute couture and luxury fashion, so this is an example of a high end fashion magazine breaking the rules.

The publication has a history of using fashion stories as a platform to discuss broader issues. In 2008, it ran the iconic Black Issue, exclusively featuring women of colour, which contributed mightily to the dialogue about diversity in the fashion industry.

Italian Vogue hashtagged ”#VogueLovesCurves” in the spirit of self love.

“Ashley pushes #bodypositivism to another level,” the magazine proclaimed.

“It’s not just about acceptance: it’s about loving who you are and being loved, feeling so comfortable with yourself that you skillfully conduct the sophisticated game of attraction, going beyond convention, sizes, categories, and measurements imposed by modern society.

“The rules of this game are self-esteem, confidence and imagination. It’s not just acceptance, but a form of love for yourself, which is most important.”

Graham, one of the world’s highest paid models is known for speaking about adoring your body and having confidence in yourself, especially to young women.

An example of this is Graham telling ITV’s Lorraine: “I tell young girls all the time,” she said. “I’m like, first of all, your ‘likes’ is not your worth. You worth has to come from within.”

Graham appears to be more than happy with the Vogue Italia editorial as she shared every photograph with her 5.8 million and counting Instagram followers.

Here’s hoping this is a sign of further changes to come and a range of bodies continue to be shared to a mainstream audience; those that are “plus size” but palatable as Graham’s body and those whose curves are currently not so accepted, in photography or by societies’ standards.

The 2017 Lake Erie Gala was held at the Clarion Hotel, 2800 W 8th St, Erie PA. The annual event, sponsored by the Lake Erie Group and Erie Sisters and Brothers (ES&B), began Wed. November 15th with the opening of registration, a pool and pizza party at the hotel, and optional bowling at Eastway Lanes.

The event had a nautical theme, and Thursday’s bus tour to the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse and Museum included a narrated video presentation on the journey of great lakes iron ore shipping, given by ES&B president, Melanie Shubitowski. Melanie’s late father was a captain for US Steel, and she had grown up spending as much as half of her summers aboard US Steel ore boats, and shared some of the knowledge she acquired. The Fairport Harbor Museum held a great deal of artifacts from the shipping industry, including the light from the lighthouse, a wealth of pictures, the lighthouse, and the pilot house from the Cleveland Cliffs ore boat, the Frontenac. Following the tour, the group had a fabulous (and large) lunch at the Old Firehouse Winery in Geneva on-the-Lake, Ohio before returning to the hotel. After dinner, we were treated to entertainment by Dueling Pianos, a favorite of Gala attendees, followed by dancing and music.

Friday’s bus tour began at Yahn Planetarium at Penn State Behrand, where we were given a presentation of how Lewis and Clark used celestial navigation to plot their trek to the Pacific Coast and back. Lunch on the tour was at Freeport Restaurant, then on to Brix 21, a charming winery with a signature pink elephant out front to greet guests, or perhaps warn them of the hazards of too much indulgence. After arrival at the hotel, the dinner was a Hawaiian Luau, with a juggler providing the night’s entertainment.

Saturday began with free time for shopping, a special lunch for spouses and SO’s, and the evening saw our traditional “Glitter Ball”, and we had a group of Canadian shoppers that were in town joining us that evening. Vendors were also in attendance at the event. Sunday morning was a breakfast and tearful good byes to dear friends as the Lake Erie Gala concluded. All in all, it was a wonderful time, and another successful Gala.
