TOMORROW — SCOTUS TO HEAR ARGUMENTS IN MASTERPIECE CASE OF BUSINESS THAT TURNED AWAY SAME-SEX COUPLE: It involves a baker who refused to serve a gay couple in violation of Colorado’s statewide nondiscrimination law. The baker, who lost before the Colorado Supreme Court, has been granted a Supreme Court hearing to make a claim that he should be able to discriminate against LGBTQ people on religious freedom and freedom of speech grounds. The Trump-Pence Administration has also entered this case to back the baker’s claim. Conversely, HRC believes that the First Amendment cannot and should not be distorted as a weapon of discrimination. And the argument is simple: businesses should be able to decide what to serve, but not who to serve. HRC has organized two major amicus briefs in this case: one on behalf of major American businesses; and a second on behalf of top chefs and bakers in all 50 states, including notable culinary leaders including Jose Andres, Tom Colicchio, Elizabeth Falkner, Carla Hall and Padma Lakshmi. This case, which will be decided by next June, will either protect the fundamental equality of LGBTQ people — or it could set a dangerous precedent giving businesses a license to discriminate. • The Associated Press’ Mark Sherman (@shermancourt) reports on how Masterpiece echoes 1968 SCOTUS Piggie Park case of a barbecue restaurant chain that refused to serve Black customers. A lower court judge wrote that the restaurant owner has a right to espouse religious beliefs, but not “the absolute right to exercise and practice such beliefs in utter disregard of the clear Constitutional rights of other citizens;” SCOTUS justices called the BBQ owner’s attempt to recoup legal costs “frivolous.” The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund focused  their amicus brief in Masterpiece on this case which they argued before SCOTUS. SENATE REPUBLICANS PASS TRUMP-PENCE ‘TAX’ SCHEME THAT INCLUDES DANGEROUS ATTACK ON ACA: Saturday morning, Senate Republicans passed a bill that repeals the ACA’s individual mandate that requires all Americans to have health insurance or pay a penalty. This provision was at the heart of the Trump-McConnell failed effort to repeal the ACA earlier this summer. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, repealing the individual mandate could result in 13 million people leaving the insurance market, immediately causing insurance premiums to soar and leave millions more priced out of access to healthcare. Furthermore, the revenue losses triggered by the bill are likely to result in future spending cuts to critical health programs like Medicare, Medicaid, global HIV/AIDS programs, the Ryan White Care Act, and other essential domestic discretionary programs. The consequences of this vote will be devastating to millions of Americans. Voters see through this harmful GOP tax scam. Prediction: American voters won’t forget this night. Republicans in swing states will regret this vote in 2018, 2020 and beyond.

HRC RESPONSE TO PA GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE PAUL MANGO’S SUPPORT OF ANTI-TRANS LEGISLATION: “These outrageous comments are disqualifying,” said JoDee Winterhof, HRC’s Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. “To be clear, Paul Mango is proposing to take Pennsylvania down the same path of anti-LGBTQ discrimination that has wracked North Carolina since the passage of their infamous HB2 law. In North Carolina, HB2 not only put countless LGBTQ people at risk, it resulted in a surge of hate violence and at least $886.4 million in economic losses as business fled the state. It also, notably, led to the defeat of the governor who signed it into law. On top of that, Paul Mango is running on a platform of defunding Planned Parenthood, one of the most crucial health care providers for the LGBTQ community. Paul Mango would do well to remember there are 360,000 LGBTQ voters — and millions more allies across the state of Pennsylvania — who won’t stand for these kinds of attacks on our community and our health care.” More from HRC.

WHITE HOUSE LEAVES BLACK, LGBTQ REPORTERS OFF HOLIDAY PARTY INVITE: Notably, American Urban Radio Networks’ April Ryan (@AprilDRyan) and The Washington Blade’s Chris Johnson (@chrisjohnson82) — both members of the White House Press Corps — were not invited. Ryan has attended every holiday party for the past 20 years. Earlier this year, Johnson went months without having White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders respond to his questions during briefings. PAID LEAVE CRITICAL FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV: While the Family and Medical Leave Act provides some protections for people living with HIV, not all are eligible to use this critical workplace protection. The LGBTQ community is disproportionately affected by HIV, and inclusive paid leave policies that support LGBTQ people’s right to balance both their health, job, and family are vital. Supreme Court refuses to take up Texas case undermining marriage equality

SCOTUS upheld a ruling threatening spousal benefits for LGBTQ couples by declining to hear Pidgeon v Turner

NEW YORK – Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD – the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, released the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States refused to take up Pidgeon v. Turner. This decision upholds the ruling of the Texas Supreme Court saying there is not a de facto right to government benefits for LGBTQ couples. This decision begins the process to undercut marriage equality by erasing spousal benefits, including healthcare, for legally married LGBTQ couples in the state of Texas.

“With all eyes on tomorrow’s oral arguments in the Masterpiece Cakeshop religious exemptions case, the Supreme Court has just let an alarming ruling by the Texas Supreme Court stand which plainly undercuts the rights of married same-sex couples. Today’s abnegation by the nation’s highest court opens the door for an onslaught of challenges to the rights of LGBTQ people at every step.”

Donald Trump Defends Michael Flynn: ‘Hillary Clinton Lied to the FBI and Nothing Happened to Her’

Donald Trump defended former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI on Friday, in a quick exchange with reporters on the White House lawn Monday morning.

“Well, I feel badly for General Flynn. I feel very badly. He’s led a very strong life. I will say this. Hillary Clinton lied many times to the FBI and nothing happened to her. Flynn lied and they destroyed his life. I think it’s a shame. Hillary Clinton, on the 4th of July weekend, went to the FBI, not under oath. It was the most incredible thing anyone’s ever seen. She lied many times. Nothing happened to her. Flynn lied, and it’s like, they ruined his life.”

Nicola Sturgeon And Sadiq Khan Lead Calls For Special Brexit Measures For Remain Areas

Nicola Sturgeon And Sadiq Khan Lead Calls For Special Brexit Measures For Remain Areas
Nicola Sturgeon and Sadiq Khan are leading calls for other parts of the UK to be given special measures on Brexit following reports that Northern Ireland could remain part of the single market and Customs Union.

The leaders, who both represent areas which strongly backed Remain during the 2016 Referendum, said there would be “huge ramifications” if Theresa May allowed the rumoured concessions for Northern Ireland.

First Minister Sturgeon used the news to push her case that Scotland should also be allowed to remain the in the single market post-Brexit, retaining “regulatory alignment with the EU”.

“Right now, Ireland is powerfully demonstrating the importance of being independent when it comes to defending your vital national interests,” she said in a tweet this afternoon.

“If one part of the UK can retain regulator alignment with EU and effectively stay in the single market (which is the right solution for Northern Ireland) there is surely no good practical reason why others can’t,” she added.

Scotland voted strongly in favour of staying in the EU during the 2016 Referendum, 62% to 38%. All 32 of the country’s council areas backed Remain.

News about a potential deal for Northern Ireland has also led to other parts of the UK – including London – to seek exemption from a hard Brexit, with political commentators warning it could have “huge implications for devolution”.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, wrote on social media this afternoon: “Huge ramifications for London if Theresa May has conceded that it’s possible for part of the UK to remain within the single market and customs union after Brexit.

“Londoners overwhelmingly voted to remain in the EU and a similar deal here could protect tens of thousands of jobs.”

December 4, 2017
Chartered accountant and international political economy professor Richard Murphy added: “The City of London will now be looking at the Northern Ireland EU deal and be asking: ‘Why can they have regulatory alignment but we have to leave the single market?’

“Expect a massive kickback from EC1,” he added.

Almost 60% of Londoners voted to Remain last year – in some boroughs, this figure was as high as 78.5%.

After the Referendum result, more than 180,000 people signed a petition calling for London to become independent and “apply to join the EU”.

Right so now that’s Scotland and London’s leaders wanting in on the single market….over to you Manchester, Bristol, Newcastle and other ‘Remain’ cities
Question is what happens in NI in future when rest of UK wants to change law but they need to stick closer to the EU? This all has huge implications for devolution

December 4, 2017
A deal on the Northern Irish border is expected to be agreed today, with Theresa May holding crunch talks in Brussels.

The news has sparked a strong reaction from ardent Brexiteer Nigel Farage, who said politicians have failed millions of Leave voters with Brexit “concessions”.

The Ukip MEP wrote on Twitter: “The UK government’s bitter betrayal of 17.4 million people today is a concession too far, for it will lead to endless problems in Scotland and it damages the integrity of the United Kingdom.”

Billy Bush on Trump’s Pussygate Tape: ‘Of Course He Said It’

Billy Bush on Trump’s Pussygate Tape: ‘Of Course He Said It’

In an op-ed in the New York Times, Billy Bush trashes Trump’s claims that the “pussygate” tape, in which the president brags about assaulting women, is fake.

Says Bush in the op-ed:

Of course he said it. And we laughed along, without a single doubt that this was hypothetical hot air from America’s highest-rated bloviator. Along with Donald Trump and me, there were seven other guys present on the bus at the time, and every single one of us assumed we were listening to a crass standup act. He was performing. Surely, we thought, none of this was real.

We now know better.

Trump has yet to respond.

UK Weather Sees Hail And Snow Expected Later In The Week Amid Cold Snap

More snow could be in store across parts of the UK this week as the cold snap returns with even more bite, the Met Office has warned.

After several days of icy temperatures last week, Britain enjoyed a spell of milder weather over the weekend.

But forecasters are predicting the mercury will plunge again later this week, with the chance of wintry showers for many places.

This week sees temperatures on the rise at first, before falling sharply through the second half of the week. It’s certainly going to feel like #winter by Friday! pic.twitter.com/idt1VPG7Gd

Met Office meteorologist Charles Powell warned temperatures could drop even lower than last week as northerly gales blast the UK.

He said: “It’s quite quiet as we start the week, but on Tuesday we will see a small change that will paint a picture, as slightly wet and windy weather develops across north west Scotland.

“On Wednesday there will be gales across the UK with a band of rain working its way across the west.
