A Virus Could Treat Brain Tumours By Boosting The Immune System

Scientists have found that a naturally occurring virus could be used to treat people with aggressive brain tumours by drastically boosting the immune system.

The study, which has been published in Science Translational Medicine, found that reovirus was able to cross the blood-brain barrier where it would then replicate and kill the cancerous cells.

Up to now, scientists believed it would be impossible for a virus to cross through the blood-brain barrier, making it significantly more difficult to administer the virus as a form of treatment.

However the results of the study have shown that the virus can be administered through a simple intravenous drip and can then travel up to the brain.

In addition to attacking the cancer cells the team also found that the virus was able to ‘switch-on’ the body’s immune system which could then attack the cancer.

This second point is significant.

“Our immune systems aren’t very good at ‘seeing’ cancers ― partly because cancer cells look like our body’s own cells, and partly because cancers are good at telling immune cells to turn a blind eye. But the immune system is very good at seeing viruses.” explains Co-lead author Alan Melcher, Professor of Translational Immunotherapy at The Institute of Cancer Research, London.

“In our study, we were able to show that reovirus could infect cancer cells in the brain. And, importantly, brain tumours infected with reovirus became much more visible to the immune system.”

The study itself involved nine patients. Each of them had cancers that had either spread to the brain from other parts of the body or were gliomas, a type of brain cancer that’s very difficult to treat.

All nine were due to have their tumours removed surgically, however in the days leading up to the operation they were given the virus through a drip.

After the surgery they looked at tissue samples from the nine patients and then samples from other patients who had had the surgery but not the virus drip.

Within the samples of those who had been given the drip, the team found evidence of the virus ‘switching-on’ the body’s immune system and then attacking the tumour.

Despite it being such a small sample, the results of the study were so conclusive that a clinical trial is already underway.

“Now we know we can get reovirus across the blood-brain barrier, we have begun clinical studies to see just how effective this viral immunotherapy can be at extending and improving the lives of patients with brain tumours, who currently have very limited treatment options available to them.” explains Professor Melcher.

Leading the clinical trial is Susan Short, Professor of Clinical Oncology at the University of Leeds. She said: 

“Brain cancer is a devastating disease. For a long time, there have not been many new developments that we could offer patients but the research that is happening at the University Leeds and elsewhere is beginning to offer a new approach.”

The late Philip Seymour Hoffman won his only Best Actor Academy Award for this biopic of Truman Capote. The film follows the famous fop as he works on his groundbreaking true crime novel, In Cold Blood.

But I’m A Cheerleader (1999), available on Hulu and Amazon Jan. 1

Time has been kind to the legacy of this campy cult classic. After initially receiving some harsh reviews from mainstream press, the film has been embraced as sharp satire of “gay conversion” therapy. The film stars gay faves like RuPaul, Natasha Lyonne, Clea Duvall and Cathy Moriarty.

Rent (2005), available on Netflix Jan. 2

Unlike But I’m A Cheerleader, this big-screen adaptation hasn’t aged so gracefully. Of course, the source material was already outdated by the time they greenlit the film version (with an aged mostly original cast). Still, as hokey as it can be at times, it’s a comfort watch that is sure to ignite some nostalgia for fans of the original stage production.

Dallas Buyers Club (2013), available on Netflix Jan. 16

Powerhouse performances from Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner anchor this Oscar-winning picture. Although it shines a light on how the medical industry took advantage of the AIDS-crisis, the film has also weathered some criticism for its portrayal of the LGBT community.

David Bowie: The Last Five Years (2018), available on HBO Jan. 8

Go behind-the-scenes of the late David Bowie’s final years as he embarks on a particularly challenging time. This doc follows Bowie as he works on albums The Next Day and Blackstar, as well as the musical Lazarus.

  • Die Politikwissenschaftler Ian Bremmer und Cliff Kupchan prognostizieren jedes Jahr die größten potentiellen Konfliktrisiken der Welt
  • Für 2018 sagen sie eine “geopolitische Depression” voraus – an der auch Deutschland beteiligt sein werde

Trump, Brexit-Chaos, Nordkorea-Konflikt, Kriege in Syrien, Jemen und der Ukraine: 2017 war ein furchteinflössendes Jahr.

► Und, so prognostizieren es die renommierten US-Politikwissenschaftler Ian Bremmer und Cliff Kupchan, das Jahr 2018 soll noch viel schlimmer werden. 

Bremmer und Kupchan leiten mit der Eurasiagroup das weltweit größte Unternehmen für politische Risikobewertung. Zu Beginn jedes Jahres stellen sie eine Prognose der international größten Krisenherde der nächsten Monate zusammen. 

Bremmers und Kupchans Liste für 2018 liest sich besonders dramatisch – und enthält auch die Bundesrepublik. 

“Die globale Ordnung bricht zusammen”

“Seien wir ehrlich”, beginnen die beiden Politikwissenschaftler, “2018 fühlt sich nicht gut an.” Zwar würden die Weltmärkte stark performen und die Wirtschaft wachsen, doch die Herausforderungen für die Weltpolitik seien beängstigend. 

“Die Bürger sind gespalten. Die Regierungen regieren kaum noch. Und die die globale Ordnung bricht zusammen”, schreiben Bremmer und Kupchan.

Besonders die Wahl Donald Trumps habe die internationale Politik in einen “Hobbschen Zustand” versetzt, der Sorgen vor einer “geopolitischen Depression” mache.

An dieser ist laut den Autoren auch Deutschland beteiligt: Durch das Regierungschaos in der Bundesrepublik sei die internationale Ordnung zusätzlich gefährdet.

Deutschland müsse sich 2018 gerade auch wegen der Krise der Eurozone zusammenreißen und seinen “politischen Bammel” ablegen.

Das heißt: Deutschland soll im kommenden Jahr wieder Verantwortung übernehmen. Angesichts der globalen Konflikte, die Bremmer und Kapchun voraussehen, geradezu ein Muss. 

Das sind die größten 10 Krisenherde, die die Experten identifizieren: 

1. Chinas Machtergreifung

“China wartet nicht länger ab”, schreiben Bremmer und Kupchan. Präsident Xi Jinping habe seine Macht innerhalb des Landes zementiert – und sei nun 2018 bereit, seinen Einfluss auf den Globus auszuweiten. 

► Auf dem verliere für viele Schwellenländer das westliche Modell liberaler Demokratien zunehmend an Attraktivität. Ein Vakuum, das China bereit sei zu füllen.    

2. Krieg durch Unfälle

Ein Dritter Weltkrieg stehe der Menschheit 2018 nicht bevor, schreiben Bremmer und Kupchan. Zum Glück. Aber: Die Risiken eines fatalen geopolitischen Unfalls hätten sich massiv erhöht. 

► Egal ob in Syrien, Nordkorea, Russland oder von Terrorismus heimgesuchten Regionen – oft sei der Ausbruch eines blutigen Konfliktes nur eine überhitzte Entscheidung entfernt. 

3. Kalter Tech-Krieg

Bremmer und Kupchan sind sicher: “Die Dominanz bei neuen Technologien zu erlangen wird der weltweit wichtigste Kampf um wirtschaftliche Macht sein.” Digitale Kommunikation und künstliche Intelligenz würden dabei eine große Rolle spielen. 

► Eine neuen Menschheitsgeneration, die rund um die Uhr online sei, stelle Gesellschaft und Politik vor ungeahnten Herausforderungen. 

4. Turbulenzen in Mexiko

Die drohende Abschaffung des Handelsabkommens NAFTA mit den USA und Kanada sowie eine Präsidentschaftswahl am 1. Juli: Mexiko steht laut Bremmer und Kupchan ein hartes Jahr bevor. 

► Ohne ein Ende der Korruption in der Politik und ohne positive Handelsperspektiven könnte Mexiko ins Chaos stürzen.

5. Spannungen zwischen den USA und dem Iran

Die anhaltenden Proteste im Iran machen derzeit Schlagzeilen. Das größere Risiko, das von dem Land ausgeht, sehen die Eurasiagroup-Experten jedoch in der Beziehung zur USA. 

► US-Präsident Trump sehe den Iran als Wurzel alles Bösen in der Welt. Sollte er neue Sanktionen verhängen oder sogar den Iran-Deal kippen, sehen Bremmer und Kupchan die Gefahr einer neuen Eskalationsspirale im Nahen Osten.  

6. Politikverdrossenheit

Bremmer und Kupchan sehen die politischen Institutionen in der westlichen Welt unter Beschuss. Große Teile der Bevölkerung würden der Bürokratie und besonders auch den Medien nicht mehr trauen.

► Diese Politikverdrossenheit erodiere die Institutionen der westlichen Staaten. In der Folge würden “Konflikte häufiger, Entscheidungsfindungen erschwert und internationales Chaos alltäglich”. 

7. Protektionismus

2017 war der Populismus weltweit auf dem Siegeszug. Im kommenden Jahr könnte er laut Bremmer und Kupchan dafür sorgen, dass mehr und mehr Länder sich wirtschaftlich und politisch abschirmen. 

► Das könne nicht nur dazu führen, dass die internationalen Märkte schwächer und komplexer würden – es erhöhe auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit von Konflikten in der internationalen Gemeinschaft. 

8. Die Zukunft Großbritanniens

Der Brexit ist ein einziges, sich dahinschleppendes Chaos. Die Eurasiagroup glaubt, dass der verfahrene Prozess 2018 Premierministerin Theresa May den Job kosten könnte. 

► Bremmer und Kupchan fürchten, dass auf May der Oppositionsführer Jeremy Corbyn folgen könnte – und mit ihm eine für die EU und die britische Wirtschaft unberechenbare Politik. 

9. Südasiatischer Nationalismus

Eine oft übersehene Region der Welt – und dennoch eine mit großem Konfliktpotential, schreiben Bremmer und Kupchan. Südasiens Staaten würden zunehmend von populistischen Weltanschauungen geprägt. 

► Ob islamistischer Populismus, wie in Indonesien und Myanmar, oder ausgewiesener Nationalismus, wie in Indien: Gewalttätige Konflikte in der Region seien wahrscheinlich – und mit der Rohingya-Krise bereits ausgebrochen.   

10. Eskalation der Gewalt in Afrikas Randstaaten

In Afrika ergibt sich laut der Eurasiagroup-Experten ein geteiltes Bild: Während Länder wie Nigeria oder Kenia Wachstum und Stabilität verzeichnen, würden Staaten wie Mali, der Südsudan und Somalia die Sicherheit des Kontinents gefährden. 

► Terrorgruppierungen und islamistische Milizen wie die Boko Haram oder Al Shabaab könnten 2018 ihren brutalen Einfluss in Afrika noch ausweiten. Gleichzeitig könnten Wirtschaftskrisen die Armut in vielen Ländern eskalieren.

I’m excited to announce our new Gym Buddies columnist, Paralympian Lauren Steadman.

A double World Champion paratriathlete and current holder of the European title (which she has won five times), the 25-year-old is a force to be reckoned with.

But while she’s an incredible athlete, she’s also very relatable and down-to-earth. Her first column reveals her secrets to success is setting small fitness goals and enjoying the journey, whether that’s working towards a personal best in training or taking up salsa dancing in her spare time.

I’m all for setting small goals this week. Today, I went to the gym for the first time in forever. I did a 20 minute HIIT session (see yesterday’s newsletter to learn more) and then, exhausted, was on my way. It’s not my usual gym session, but I’m proud of myself for taking the first step.

It can be tempting in January to workout as much as possible to make up for December, but overtraining might be causing you more trouble than good. So make sure you factor in those rest days, too.

Many people think this is the just your abs or abdominal muscles, but your “core” also refers to a wide range of muscles including your abs, lower back and hips.

Your core is involved in basically every movement you make. A strong core means can improve power and flexibility, but also insures stability and balance. Put bluntly: it’s essential.

There are many exercises that work your core, but the most popular are planks and sit ups.

Stephen Bannon, der rechtspopulistische Ex-Berater von US-Präsident Donald Trump, hat in einem bald erscheinendem Buch ein Treffen von Trumps Familienmitgliedern mit einer russischen Anwältin als “verräterisch” bezeichnet. 

Das ist passiert: 

► Am 9. Januar kommt das Buch “Fire & Fury – Inside the Trump White House” des Autors Michael Wolff auf den Markt.

Alien Megastructure Star Mystery May Finally Have Been Solved

Named by some as the ‘most mysterious star in the universe’, KIC 8462852 or Tabby’s Star has been keeping astronomers and the public hooked thanks to the theory that the star could be home to an alien megastructure.

This theory stems from the unique way in which the star suddenly dims and then brightens again. While many have tried to fathom why this is, we have until now been struggling to say with some certainty why it’s happening.

Theories have ranged from it being simply a huge asteroid field to the most interesting of all which suggests it could be a vast alien-made structure.

Thanks to a Kickstarter project which raised over $100,000, researchers were able to pay for the Las Cumbres Observatory to spend many months closely examining the star’s behaviour.

Well now a team involving over 100 researchers, led by LSU Department of Physics & Astronomy Assistant Professor Tabetha Boyajian, feel they finally have enough data to solve the mystery of Tabby’s Star.

“Dust is most likely the reason why the star’s light appears to dim and brighten.” explains Boyajian. “The new data shows that different colors of light are being blocked at different intensities. Therefore, whatever is passing between us and the star is not opaque, as would be expected from a planet or alien megastructure,” 

Of course while it might not be the answer we were all secretly rooting for, the method with which we got our answer shows a fascinating change in the way we make new discoveries in space.

It was citizen scientists known as ‘Planet Hunters’ who were the ones to first detect the star’s mysterious behaviour.

“If it wasn’t for people with an unbiased look on our universe, this unusual star would have been overlooked,” Boyajian said. “Again, without the public support for this dedicated observing run, we would not have this large amount of data.”

Then, thanks to the Kickstarter campaign it was again the public that were able to fund the time the telescope needed to look at the star.

“We’re gathering so much data on a single target. This project is reflective of changes in astronomy with the access to this flood of data,” said Tyler Ellis from Spokane, Washington, an LSU doctoral candidate studying this star.
