hate letter

At least seven businesses throughout New York City received a hate letter with a swastika and the Trump slogan “Make America Great Again” which threatens Jews, black people, and gays, and reads “Christian Identity is Back”.

“Juden Raus”, which can be seen on the letter above, is German for “Jews out.”

Landmark Brooklyn business threatened; I’ve contacted NYPD bias unit. We take hate crimes VERY seriously here. t.co/VfzXw8AZqQ pic.twitter.com/lXKvlJlqN7

— Dov Hikind (@HikindDov) October 3, 2017

New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind posted the letter to Facebook and alerted the police after being told of it by Weiss Bakery in Brooklyn, which received one of the letters.

Wrote Hikind on Facebook:

“In light of what’s going on the world, all threats must be taken very seriously,” said Hikind. “We’re not waiting for an incident before addressing a threat. Fortunately, our community and myself have an excellent relationship with law enforcement—and the NYPD is the best there is at addressing criminal activity.

“Hate crimes are serious matters. This threat against one of our community’s beloved establishments, which used the U.S. mail, is absolutely a hate crime. It’s sad that we live in a time when such disgusting things are said about various races, including the Jews, but we will certainly take these matters seriously when they arise and act swiftly and responsibly, in tandem with the police, to make sure our community members are safe and protected.”

Hikind urges anyone who is threatened to contact their local precinct. He said the NYPD’s 66th precinct is pursuing the threat to Weiss Bakery and the bias unit is involved.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez says his office is investigating.

We are aware of this and similar letters that have been sent. We are investigating and will not stand for these acts. t.co/DoO2bDQiWQ

Tennessee Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn’s anti-LGBTQ activist history

Tennessee Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn’s anti-LGBTQ activist history

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today released the following background on Tennessee Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn which highlights her anti-LGBTQ activist record during her time as a public servant. This backgrounder is in response to media coverage of Blackburn’s decision to run for the open seat in the U.S. Senate following the unexpected retirement of current Senator Bob Corker.

Marsha Blackburn, who served as the vice chair of President Trump’s transition team, has been a leading voice against LGBTQ acceptance – including expressing vocal support for Trump’s transgender military ban. Rep. Blackburn’s own anti-LGBTQ record also includes opposing the Violence Against Women Act for including LGBTQ provisions, championing a federal constitutional amendment that would have banned marriage equality, and targeting elected officials working to protect and support LGBTQ students in the classrooms.

Read more about Congresswoman Blackburn’s anti-LGBTQ record below.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Marsha Blackburn’s Anti-LGBTQ Record

  • Said of Supreme Court ruling granting marriage equality to same-sex couples in all fifty states: “Today’s Supreme Court decision is a disappointment. I have always supported traditional marriage. Despite this decision, no one can overrule the truth about what marriage actually is — a sacred institution between a man and a woman.”

  • Applauded President Trump’s transgender military ban.

  • Spoke out aggressively against the Obama administration’s transgender guidance (1:00–2:48).

  • An original cosponsor of H.R. 2802, the so-called First Amendment Defense Act.

  • Voted against LGBTQ-inclusive Employment Nondiscrimination Act.

  • Voted against the repeal of the military’s discriminatory Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.

  • Voted against LGBT-inclusive hate crimes legislation.

  • Opposed the Violence Against Women Act specifically because it included LGBTQ provisions.

  • Actively worked to remove an openly gay safe schools chief for what she and her conservative colleagues denounced as “an integral role in promoting homosexuality and pushing a pro-homosexual agenda in America’s schools.”

  • Championed a federal constitutional amendment banning marriage equality and said it was “very sad, very sad, that some courts and some activist judges have taken it upon themselves to usurp the will of the people.”

Jimmy Kimmel on Tillerson: ‘Okay, So He Definitely Called Trump a Moron’ – WATCH

Jimmy Kimmel on Tillerson: ‘Okay, So He Definitely Called Trump a Moron’ – WATCH

Jimmy Kimmel took a thorough look at the Rex Tillerson moron-gate story that went down yesterday and after playing Tillerson’s non-denial of it, concluded:

“Okay, so he definitely called him a moron.”

But Kimmel added: “If Trump is upset Rex Tillerson called him a moron, wait till he finds out what the rest of the country has been calling him.”

To that end, Kimmel offered up a fake press secretary to clarify that Tillerson did not call him any of the following: “idiot, bonehead, nincompoop, imbecile, empty jack-o-lantern, suntanned ham-loaf, so stupid he got his hair cut in a cotton candy machine and called it a hairstyle, racist sweet potato,” and many other names.

BREAKING: Jeff Sessions Reverses Non-Discrimination Protections for Transgender Workers

BREAKING: Jeff Sessions Reverses Non-Discrimination Protections for Transgender Workers

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today expressed outrage at United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions after he reversed a federal policy which was aimed to protect transgender workers from workplace discrimination. In a move that erased a policy issued by the Obama Administration, Sessions issued a memo to United States attorneys arguing that transgender workers should not receive the same protections under the Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act as other workers receive based on gender and race.

“This outright attack on transgender Americans has proven, once again, that Attorney General Jeff Sessions is working according to his own ideology and not actual justice,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “Sessions joins President Trump and an administration who are stopping at nothing to strengthen institutional discrimination and walk back the hard-fought progress made by the LGBTQ community.”

Currently, there is no federal law that explicitly prohibits discrimination against transgender employees in the workplace, but the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has previously argued that transgender workers are protected in the workplace as a form of sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Now, the Trump Administration is working to dismantle this progress by arguing “Title VII does not prohibit discrimination based on gender identity per se,” according to a copy of Session’s memo obtained by BuzzFeed.

Further, today’s announcement falls directly in line with the Trump Administration’s overall goal to erase LGBTQ acceptance from the fabric of this nation. In less than a year, President Trump has worked to ban transgender Americans from openly serving “at any capacity” in the U.S. military, remove LGBTQ Americans from the upcoming 2020 United States Census, and erase LGBTQ seniors from critical Medicare and Medicaid surveys. Find more information to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ extensive anti-LGBTQ record below.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Anti-LGBTQ Record of Attorney General Jeff Sessions

As Attorney General

  • 10.5.17 – Issued a memo to revoke workplace protected for transgender people under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • 9.7.17 – Filed an amicus brief in support so-called “religious exemptions” to discriminate against LGBTQ Americans.
  • 9.5.17 – Announced the end of the DACA program, which protected an estimated 800,000 young undocumented immigrants, including 36,000 LGBTQ DREAMers, from detention and deportation.
  • 7.26.17 – Filed a brief opposing workplace nondiscrimination protections for the LGBTQ community under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1864 in the case Zarda v. Altitude Express.
  • 7.11.17 – Delivered closed-press remarks at a Summit on Religious Liberty hosted by the anti-LGBTQ hate group, Alliance Defending Freedom
  • 4.14.17 – Withdrew lawsuit accusing North Carolina of discriminating against the LGBTQ community in response to HB2, despite the similarities of the HB142 replacement.
  • 2.22.17 – With help of President Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded Title IX protections for transgender students in our nation’s schools.

Prior to Service

  • Supported the Federal Marriage Amendment in both 2004 and 2006, claiming that “leftists” were out to “destroy the traditional definition of marriage.”
  • Equated support for Federal Marriage Amendment with changing the constitution so that it opposed slavery: “When a case comes up of this kind, we can say with certainty there is a likelihood, and many scholars believe a very high likelihood, that the Court would rule that traditional marriage is too restrictive, it has to be changed from the way the people have defined it. We do not have to accept that. We have every right to amend the Constitution. The laws in the Constitution provided for slavery—that was changed.”
  • Claimed the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning sodomy laws “divorced morality from law.”
  • While attempting to defund the National Endowment of the Arts, echoed social conservative claims that “the National Endowment for the Arts showed explicit homosexual activities on the screen using a $31,000 grant.”
  • Condemned California federal judge for finding the state’s discriminatory marriage ban to be unconstitutional, claiming he “was citing his own views, emotions and feelings” rather than the law.
  • Opposed the nomination of US Supreme Court justice Elena Kagan in large part because of what he perceived as her LGBTQ support. (More here)
  • Reportedly fought to stop LGBTQ conference: As Alabama’s attorney general in 1996, Sessions attempted to stop the Southeastern Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual College Conference from meeting at the University of Alabama under a state law passed in 1992 that made it illegal for public universities to fund in any way a group that promotes “actions prohibited by the sodomy and sexual misconduct laws.”
  • While opposing the nomination of a DC Superior Court judge, he cited (and placed on record) letters from viciously anti-LGBTQ groups like the Traditional Values Coalition, which faulted the nominee for her “radical lesbianism, anti-marriage” views.
  • Implied the US Supreme Court was not allowed to find a right to marriage equality and that he might continue the fight: “…what this court did-they can’t to do, nothing in the constitution for such a result no mention of marriage in the constitution,’ says Sessions. It’s an issue that evokes a lot of passion on both sides and may not be over.”
  • Cosponsored the so-called First Amendment Defense Act, which would allow opponents of marriage equality to discriminate against LGBTQ (or even supportive) customers and contractors.
  • Cosponsored the so-called State Marriage Defense Act, a bill designed to circumvent federal protections for same-sex married couples.
  • Voted against the repeal of the military’s discriminatory Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.
  • Referred to a gay sexual orientation as having “gay tendencies.”

Jeff Sessions Reverses Policy That Protects Transgender People from Discrimination Under Title VII of Civil Rights Act

Jeff Sessions Reverses Policy That Protects Transgender People from Discrimination Under Title VII of Civil Rights Act

jeff sessions

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has just rescinded a policy that protected transgender people under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

Buzzfeed News reports:

Sessions’ directive, obtained by BuzzFeed News, says, “Title VII’s prohibition on sex discrimination encompasses discrimination between men and women but does not encompass discrimination based on gender identity per se, including transgender status.”

It adds that the government will take this position in pending and future matters, which could have far-reaching implications across the federal government and may result in the Justice Department fighting against transgender workers in court.

“Although federal law, including Title VII, provides various protections to transgender individuals, Title VII does not prohibit discrimination based on gender identity per se,” Sessions writes. “This is a conclusion of law, not policy. As a law enforcement agency, the Department of Justice must interpret Title VII as written by Congress.”

…The memo reflects the Justice Department’s aggression toward LGBT rights under President Trump and Sessions, who reversed Obama-era guidance that protects transgender students after a few weeks in office. Last month, Sessions filed a brief at the Supreme Court in favor of a Christian baker who refused a wedding cake to a gay couple. And last week, the department argued in court that Title VII doesn’t protect a gay worker from discrimination, showing that Sessions will take his view on Title VII into private employment disputes.

At issue in the latest policy is how broadly the government interprets Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which does not address LGBT rights directly. Rather, it prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex.

More at Buzzfeed.

The DNC released this statement:

“This week, Jeff Sessions escalated the Trump administration’s war on LGBTQ people. By reinterpreting our employment laws to try to stop protecting transgender people from discrimination, Donald Trump, Mike Pence, and Jeff Sessions have revealed their real goal – turn the clock back to a time when life was even more difficult for LGBTQ people, transgender individuals in particular.

“Fortunately, the courts have rebuked this bigotry and made clear that LGBTQ Americans have the right to be free from discrimination in the workplace. It’s time for Congress to do the same, because Attorney General Sessions can’t be trusted to protect us or our civil rights. Democrats support the right of LGBTQ people to live and work without fear and demand Sessions stop using the Department of Justice to further this administration’s divisive agenda.”
