It Took More Than Power For Sandy Gallin to Cover Out’s Hollywood Issue

Sandy Gallin

My thoughts go out to legendary Sandy Gallin, under renewed attack by blood cancer in the ICU at UCLA Medical Center and that he can tap some of the same strength and confidence he’s shown in life so far. I don’t know him well, but we crossed paths for a while in the 90s including some memorable times at events, the beach, and getting to help his “roommate” Dolly Parton put her shoe at the top of the Christmas tree in their New York apartment while there for drinks with a friend.

Author Kevin Sessums knows him well and describes him as “kind and kinda kooky and crazy talented.” For a long time one of, if not “the”, top managers in Hollywood with a client list that has included his roommate, Cher, Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson. He later segued into his current career as a successful real estate entrepreneur and designer.

I’m still thankful for his support in what turned out to be our naive decision to do a Hollywood Power issue at Out in 1994. Sandy ended up the ONLY one on our target list who would be featured in the issue. He just said “Yes” and joked in the interview that in addition to getting to be a role model, he might find a boyfriend. If only because of how many others didn’t do it, this was brave thing at the time.

And it was great for the magazine. We featured legit Hollywood power on the cover, and in true manager fashion, Sandy arranged for a friend to shoot the cover…and that friend happened to be Herb Ritts. (Who we included in the following issue launching the first Out 100 list.)

Jonathan Van Meter of Vogue and Vibe did the interview and Sue Carswell of People landed a competitive Amanda Bearse interview. The supporting star of Married With Children had recently come out and it’s a sign of the times that it was big news.

SANDY GALLIN  ended up the ONLY one on our target list who would be featured in the issue.

At that point not a single Teen Wolf was out. I didn’t know Dougie Houser’s real name. And though Ellen came out 20 years ago today and was treated poorly by the industry for years, that was three years after this cover. It would be another 4 years before George Michael came out and another 16 years for Ricky Martin. David Geffen, Clive Davis and Anderson Cooper? NopeWe had a hard time finding cover subjects each month.

There were, of course openly gay folks in the industry  working outside the mainstream system, many because of the homophobia. And we covered them in this issue and others. Happily many of those, and others early in their careers back then are among the most successful, respected, and powerful in the industry. Alan Poul, Alan Ball, Howie Klein, Christine Vachon and others were doing significant not really part of the Hollywood system. And a  generation, slightly younger, my contemporaries, including Bruce Cohen, Nina Jacobson, Ryan Murphy, Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey, Stephen Friedman and others were just getting past entry level, and were starting to make names for themselves

Diving into this cover, Sandy Gallin supported our start up, and had a message for those blazing the trail on their own terms, that they should keep going, that things were changing, and to feel some encouragement. I hope he finds whatever strength and other support he needs now.

Joe Biden: ‘I am Disgusted and Appalled’ by Reports of Torture and Murder of Gay Men in Chechnya

Joe Biden: ‘I am Disgusted and Appalled’ by Reports of Torture and Murder of Gay Men in Chechnya

Joe Biden Davos

Former VP Joe Biden released a statement on Friday denouncing detentions of gay men in Chechnya

“I am disgusted and appalled by reports from both the Russian media and non-governmental organizations that authorities in the Russian republic of Chechnya have rounded up, tortured, and even murdered individuals who are believed to be gay. When faced with such crimes of hate and inhumanity, it is the responsibility of every person of conscience to speak out—to oppose this campaign of violence before it continues further.

Every man or woman on this earth is entitled to be treated with dignity—to live without fear and to love freely. Unfortunately, the human rights abuses perpetrated by Chechen authorities and the culture of impunity that surrounds them means that these hate crimes are unlikely to ever be properly investigated or that the perpetrators will see justice. But that does not mean that we should fail to defend basic human rights, fundamental freedoms, and universal values.

I hope that the current administration lives up to the promises it has made to advance human rights for everyone by raising this issue directly with Russia’s leaders. The United States must lead the way to demand an end to these egregious violations of human rights.”

Nevada Governor Signs Bill Protecting LGBTQ Youth in Child Welfare and Juvenile Detention Facilities

Nevada Governor Signs Bill Protecting LGBTQ Youth in Child Welfare and Juvenile Detention Facilities

Post submitted by Narissa Rahaman, Western Regional Field Organizer

On Tuesday, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval signed Assembly Bill (AB) 99, extending protections to LGBTQ youth in child welfare and juvenile detention facilities. AB 99, also known as the Youth Out of Home Placement bill, requires foster parents to be trained on working with LGBTQ youth and requires state and local agencies and facilities to treat a child in accordance with their gender identity.

“Ensuring that every child, regardless of background, identity, or expression is safe and secure is not something I am willing to compromise on,” Sandoval said in a statement. “This bill requires the appropriate levels of training to ensure that our state employees or state-sponsored guardians have the knowledge and understanding to provide the highest levels of care for the children they serve.”

HRC remains steadfast in its commitment to ensure child welfare agencies provide support and services consistent with the identity and expression of LGBTQ youth. HRC Foundation’s All Children – All Families program provides LGBTQ competency training to child welfare agencies across the U.S. Professionals who want to improve their practice with LGBTQ youth and parents can access the program’s free, expert resources, including a Beginner’s Guide for LGBTQ inclusion, online at www.hrc.org/acaf. “Field Forward,” the program’s e-newsletter, delivers the latest best practice tips and resources for LGBTQ inclusion to your inbox every month. VIDEO: Texas students speak out, take action against anti-transgender SB6 bill

Students across Texas are voicing their grave concerns about Senate Bill 6 (SB6), a bill threatening harm to transgender people across the Lone Star State. Join the movement today at glaad.org/texas.

SB6, which is similar to the widely-covered HB2 in North Carolina, bans local governments from enacting nondiscrimination ordinances that protect transgender people, or from requiring companies with city contracts from having similar protections. It also restricts restroom and locker room access for transgender people in government buildings, public schools and universities.

GLAAD met with students on the ground at the University of Texas at Austin to discuss how the anti-transgender animus behind SB6 impacts their well-being as students, LGBTQ community members, or allies to their trans peers. The students also shared ways in which they are rallying support for those most targeted by SB6, like encouraging allies to safely accompany trans students to public facilities.

“The possibility of having someone draw a gun on me because they think I’m in the wrong bathroom is really terrifying,” said Tahlia G., an undergraduate student at UT – Austin, referring to a a recent law allowing concealed handguns to be carried on her campus and at other public universities in the state. She added later, “We’ve had beach balloons thrown at queer people…[at] black people and other people of color.”

Thatcher Combs, a graduate student at the university noted that SB6 and bills like it can limit trans students’ opportunities to thrive on campus. “How do you expect somebody to be successful in anything when anywhere they go, they feel like they have a target on their back or their feel completely unwelcome?”

“As a gay man, it’s important for me to advocate because there wouldn’t be gay rights if it wasn’t for trans women,” said Tony Hernandez, noting the invaluable role that some of the most marginalized members of the LGBTQ community have played in the movement for full equality.

Check out the video here:

Earlier this year, GLAAD teamed up with Equality Texas, The Ally Coalition, and more than 160 leading artists, entertainers, and influencers to release an open letter opposing bills, including SB6, threatening harm to LGBTQ Texans. The letter demonstrated widespread disapproval for dangerous legislation.

@kiminoa_seattle FYI sb6 has not become law. It passed the Texas senate. Still would need to pass the house and be signed by gov.

This anti-trans bill in Arkansas just passed the House. It goes to the Senate. SB6 in Texas has passed the Senate. Bills moving elsewhere. t.co/XPgXjvIqql

#SB6 passed the Texas Senate. Help send a clear message to the House that this bill will hurt LGBTQ Texans: t.co/JrM4KgzrLf #StopSB6

— GLAAD (@glaad) March 15, 2017

SB6 sends a clear and hateful message to all LGBTQ people, especially transgender and gender non-conforming Texans directly targeted by this bill who feel unsafe at home and school. The Texas Senate has voted to pass SB6, which is now with the Texas House of Representatives. There is still time to stand against hate and support transgender Texans.

CARTER PAGE: “I’m very encouraged that all of the lies that have been a drag on this administration are finally coming out into the open.”

Katy PerryKATY PERRY. Not staying silent anymore: “I don’t think you have to shout it from the rooftops. But I think you have to stand for something, and if you’re not standing for anything,” she adds pointedly, perhaps aiming at some of her deliberately apolitical confreres, “you’re really just serving yourself, period, end of story. California Gurls and fluffy stuff would be completely inauthentic to who I am now and what I’ve learned. I do believe we need a little escapism, but I think that it can’t all be that. If you have a voice you have a responsibility to use it now, more than ever.”

FILTHY. Health inspectors ding Mar-a-Lago kitchen: “Inspectors found 13 violations at the fancy club’s kitchen, according to recently published reports — a record for an institution that charges $200,000 in initiation fees.

WEEKEND RECIPE. Homemade marshmallow peeps.

Anthony KennedySCOTUS. Whispers of Anthony Kennedy retirement: “Kennedy has given no public indication of his plans, but he has drawn attention with a handful of semiprivate scheduling decisions. Perhaps most significantly, his next law clerk reunion will take place during the last weekend of June, offering the possibility that he will spring a piece of news on the gathering.”

HAIR DON’T. Joaquin Phoenix is a ginger now.

NORTH CAROLINA. Federal government withdraws lawsuit against NC over HB2: “Under the Obama administration, the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division alleged that the state had violated a 1964 civil rights law that bans discrimination on the basis of sex. The Obama administration has argued that the law covered transgender discrimination as well.”

Ellen Degeneres yep i'm gay

20 YEARS AGO. TIME reprints Ellen’s “Yep I’m Gay” cover story: “What was shocking, then, was that DeGeneres (and her show’s overlords at ABC) was willing to risk the public’s reaction. She would be playing the first gay lead character on American network television. Some sponsors announced they would pull ads from the show — including J.C. Penney, ironically, as that company would later hire DeGeneres for an ad campaign that would in turn draw its own controversy — and the nation debated whether the show would “legitimize” a facet of life that was still marginalized, or if it merely proved that homosexuality was already accepted by enough of the population that such a plot twist was possible.”

Trump bombMOTHER OF ALL BOMBS. 36 ISIS militants killed, says Afghan ministry: “Dawlat Waziri, an Afghan ministry spokesman said of Thursday’s strike: ‘No civilian has been hurt and only the base, which Daesh used to launch attacks in other parts of the province, was destroyed.’”

STEVE BANNON. From shadow president to Trump’s marked man.

BIG  BUCKS. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made $27.4 million at Exxon last year: “He and other senior executives got raises even though Exxon’s net income fell more than 50 percent in 2016 as the company, like many of its peers, tried to cut costs and weather a period of low oil prices.”

justin trudeau transgenderCANADA. Justin Trudeau introduces legislation to legalize marijuana nationwide. “Many nations have either decriminalized marijuana, allowed it to be prescribed medically or effectively stopped enforcing laws against it. But when Mr. Trudeau’s bill passes as expected, Canada will become only the second nation, after Uruguay, to completely legalize marijuana as a consumer product.”

LAWSUITS. RuPaul’s Drag Race finalist Detox sues managers for unpaid royalties, fraud: “Season five finalist Detox Icunt aka Matthew Sanderson – who finished 4th in his first season – filed suit against Producer Entertainment Group and Six Degrees Worldwide Entertainment. The reality star is accusing his ex-managers of breach of contract, fraud and intentional interference with prospective business advantage. Sanderson explains he signed on to work with the managers back in 2012.”

EASTER CANDY. Dustin Lance Black and Tom Daley make some poopy bird nests.
