Kolzak Award. Presenting the award to Troye were surprise guest Carly Rae Jepsen with legendary songwriter and GLAAD Board Member Justin Tranter. Patricia Arquette was also honored at the event which will air exclusively on Logo on Thursday, April 6 at 10/9c.

Mary J. Blige presented the Outstanding Film – Wide Release award to Moonlight; Paris Jackson and Tatiana Maslany presented the Outstanding Comedy Series award to Amazon’s Transparent; and Josh Hutcherson presented the Outstranding Drama Series award to Freeform’s Shadowhunters

In his acceptance speech, Troye paid tribute to historic LGBTQ figures  — including Bayard Rustin, Peter Staley, Marsha P. Johnson, and Sylvia Rivera — saying:

It was their activism and sacrifice that paved the way for all of us to be here tonight. And so, while I am so thankful and fortunate to have this moment, I’d like to share it with the warriors who made it possible, but maybe didn’t get one for themselves.

Watch his speech here:

The Stephen F. Kolzak Award is presented to an LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance. The award is named after a legendary casting director, who devoted the last part of his life to raising awareness in the entertainment industry about the discrimination faced by LGBTQ people as well as people living with HIV. Previous Stephen F. Kolzak honorees include Laverne Cox, Ellen DeGeneres, Ruby Rose, Chaz Bono, Melissa Etheridge, Bill Condon, Wanda Sykes, Alan Ball, Pedro Zamora, Martina Navratilova, Rufus Wainwright, Paris Barclay, Robert Greenblatt, and Sir Ian McKellen.

Upon its release Troye Sivan’s debut album, Blue Neighbourhood (Capitol Records) topped over 50 iTunes charts around the world. Billboard praised Troye as “the voice of a new more tolerant generation”, while The New York Times dubbed him the “prototype for tomorrow’s global pop star”. Blue Neighbourhood is RIAA Certified Gold in the U.S. and contains hits “Youth,” which is certified Platinum, and “Wild,” which is certified Gold.  Troye has 20 million combined online followers and over one billion streams to date.

Troye relentlessly supports LGBTQ causes and the fight against discrimination through education, awareness and advocacy. The recently released video for “Heaven” has over 8 million views and was wildly commended for celebrating LGBTQ history. In addition, he has worked with organizations including the Ali Forney Center for LGBTQ homeless youth in New York City and the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. A portion of every ticket sold on Troye’s 2016 Suburbia Tour was donated to the Ally Coalition and bathrooms at every venue where possible along the tour were gender neutral. At each stop of the Surburbia Tour, volunteers collected donated goods for a local LGBTQ organization and assisted with distributing LGBTQ materials at an Ally Coalition activation booth. Troye has also participated in GLAAD’s anti-bullying Spirit Day and was among over 20 artists – including Mary J. Blige, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and Jason Derulo – to appear on GLAAD’s song “Hands,” which was released with Interscope Records to remember the lives lost in the Pulse nightclub shooting.

Troye Sivan at the GLAAD Rising Stars Luncheon on March 31, 2017Additionally, Troye joined GLAAD for the inaugural Rising Stars Grants Luncheon on March 31 to award grants to three college students for LGBTQ advocacy work. The luncheon was hosted by Hannah Hart with Troye, Victoria Justice, Gigi Gorgeous, and Alexandra Grey presenting to the grant recipients. The GLAAD Rising Stars program empowers and invests in the next generation of LGBTQ change makers, whose advocacy is changing their local cities and the culture at large. Grants are awarded annually to LGBTQ youth who champion intersectional issues with their advocacy efforts. GLAAD’s Rising Stars Grants are presented by Barilla, Coca-Cola, and Delta.

Troye presented the Delta Airlines Accelerating Acceptance Grant to Lizeth Urdiales, a queer, undocumented Latinx, differently-abled senior at the University of Texas at Austin.

“Troye Sivan embodies a generation of LGBTQ youth who are unapologetic, outspoken, and proud to be who they are,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President & CEO. “He has quickly become a leading voice of his generation and sends a message of hope and empowerment with every song, music video, and social post.”

The 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented by Delta Air Lines, Hilton, Ketel One Vodka, Liberty Mutual Insurance, and Wells Fargo. The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD’s work to amplify stories from the LGBTQ community and issues that build support for equality and acceptance.

Take Pride in Combating STDs, However You Choose to Do It

Take Pride in Combating STDs, However You Choose to Do It

Did you know April is National Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Awareness Month? Probably not, and that’s a problem because STDs are on the rise in a big way.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nation’s top public health agency, rates of syphilis are the highest they’ve been in 20 years, with the highest rates occurring among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. Nearly 24,000 cases of primary and secondary syphilis were reported in 2015, up nearly 20 percent from the year before. Nearly 400,000 of cases of gonorrhea and 1.5 million cases of chlamydia were reported in 2015 as well.

While all STDs can be easily treated or cured with the help of a medical provider, they can still cause serious problems if left ignored. Additionally, the fear of acquiring STDs, including HIV, keeps many LGBTQ people and allies from enjoying an otherwise active and healthy sex life.

Yes, STD rates are on the rise, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Our community has come together to address similar trends in the past, and we can do it again. That’s why HRC is proud to mark National STD Awareness Month with a month-long social and digital media campaign to educate LGBTQ people and allies about the steps we can take to take care of ourselves, our partners, and our community. Joining us in this effort are Building Healthy Online Communities, Hornet App, the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors, the National Coalition of STD Directors, and Project Inform.

Follow HRC’s blog throughout the month of April to learn how to do it (i.e., prevent the spread of STDs), however how you choose to do it (e.g., with condoms, PrEP, abstinence). Whether it’s learning about STDs, talking about STDs, or getting tested and treated for STDs, take pride in doing your part to keep our community healthy. Be sure to tell us what you think using the hashtags #STDMonth17 and #TakePride.

This post is not a substitute for sound medical advice — and the examples throughout it don’t cover every situation! We encourage you to seek out additional resources from other community advocates and, most importantly, talk to a knowledgeable healthcare provider before making any medical decisions.

Patricia Arquette remembers late sister Alexis and demands trans acceptance at GLAAD Media Awards

Patricia Arquette remembers late sister Alexis and demands trans acceptance at GLAAD Media Awards

GLAAD

Patricia Arquette at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on April 1, 2017 (Photo by Vivien Killilea/Getty Images for GLAAD)Academy Award-winning actress and activist Patricia Arquette received GLAAD’s Vanguard Award at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on April 1. The award was presented by Jeffrey Tambor and Luke Perry, who spoke of his long friendship with Patricia’s late sister Alexis. Troye Sivan was also honored at the event which will air exclusively on Logo on Thursday, April 6 at 10/9c. Mary J. Blige presented the Outstanding Film – Wide Release award to Moonlight; Paris Jackson and Tatiana Maslany presented the Outstanding Comedy Series award to Amazon’s Transparent; and Josh Hutcherson presented the Outstranding Drama Series award to Freeform’s Shadowhunters

In her acceptance speech, Patricia Arquette called out Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Department of Justice for ignoring a letter from six Democratic members of Congress calling for a federal hate crime investigation into the pattern of murders of transgender women. “Can you hear us, Jeff Sessions?” she said, adding that, “You don’t need to have a trans family member, or a gay friend, or a questioning kid for this to affect you. It doesn’t matter what color or gender or faith you are. So many marginalized groups are under attack. When one of us is vulnerable, all of us are vulnerable.”

She also remembered her late sister Alexis Arquette:

Alexis challenged the movie industry at its core. She had a very successful career as an actor. Alexis knew she was risking losing work by living her truth. That she would lose parts by living as a trans woman. She risked it all because she couldn’t live a lie. Whatever mark I have made in this life in activism will always pale in the light of Alexis’s bravery. She did not knock on the door of progress. She kicked the door open.

The Vanguard Award is presented to media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance of LGBTQ people. Previous Vanguard Award honorees include Kerry Washington, Elizabeth Taylor, Jennifer Lopez, Cher, Demi Lovato, Whoopi Goldberg, Antonio Banderas, Drew Barrymore, Janet Jackson, and Sharon Stone.

Patricia Arquette is an Academy-Award winning actor, activist, and longtime ally to the LGBTQ community. She has consistently used her platform to voice support of the LGBTQ community and issues such as marriage equality and transgender equality. An outspoken advocate for her late transgender sister, Arquette most recently spoke out against the Academy Awards’ glaring omission of Alexis Arquette from this year’s In Memoriam tribute.  In addition, she has appeared in LGBTQ-inclusive projects such as Flirting with Disaster, which received a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Film – Wide Release in 1996.

Arquette is also a fervent advocate for numerous social and environmental justice issues. Arquette has spoken out against the Dakota Access Pipeline, standing in solidarity with the Indigenous groups leading the movement. She is an equal pay advocate for transgender women and has played a key role in passing several pieces of equal pay legislation as part of her role as a UN gender pay champion. Arquette also founded the charity GiveLove, which has now helped bring sustainable compost sanitation solutions to seven nations.

“Patricia Arquette embodies the critical voice needed during these times to resist against injustice and discrimination across a range of issues,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “She is a beacon of light who has consistently used her platform to advance equality across marginalized groups and to drive culture-changing conversations that move acceptance forward.”

The 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented by Delta Air Lines, Hilton, Ketel One Vodka, Liberty Mutual Insurance, and Wells Fargo. The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD’s work to amplify stories from the LGBTQ community and issues that build support for equality and acceptance.
