ACT-UP Needs Your Help For Its Latest Round Of Activism

Act Up! Fight Back! Crowdsource!

Groundbreaking and recently reinvigorated AIDS/HIV activism organization ACT UP, whose effective and critical actions during the crisis were chronicled in the Oscar-nominated documentary How To Stop A Plague, has gone 21st Century with a $10k GoFundMe.com campaign.

The money will help allow ACT UP and its members, none of whom are paid, to: “join lobby days to advocate for implementation of Governor Cuomo’s Plan to End the AIDS Epidemic in NY by 2020; rent a float and booth at NY Pride to distribute HIV/AIDS information; print flyers and posters for our creative, life-saving demonstrations; cover the rental costs of our Monday night meeting space at the LGBT Center,” and more.

“ACT UP’s GoFundMe effort will hopefully become an annual event,” says longtime ACT UP member and activist Peter Staley, “and help the build a base of long-term donors for the group. Back in 1988, ACT UP launched a direct-mail campaign that did much the same. I chaired their fundraising committee back then, so it’s wonderful to see new vigor amongst today’s membership for building the group up like this. Online fundraising costs a lot less than direct-mail appeals and, besides, we’re all online these days rather than opening snail mail. ACT UP is also trying to reinvigorate their merchandizing efforts. We used to sell over $100,000 of t-shirts and buttons back in the day!”

Oh, yes, GoFundMe donors do receive swag. Fight back, get a T-shirt!

Anti-gay Groups Offer 'Congratulations' to Yes Campaign in Wake of Irish Marriage Equality Victory

Anti-gay Groups Offer 'Congratulations' to Yes Campaign in Wake of Irish Marriage Equality Victory

Iona

The two main organizations behind the No campaign in Ireland’s marriage referendum have conceded defeat and issued statements congratulating the equality side’s victory.

Catholic-based anti-gay activist group Iona Institute, which aired a series of misleading fear ads ahead of the referendum vote, sent out the following press release:

We would like to congratulate the Yes side on winning such a handsome victory in the marriage referendum. They fought a very professional campaign that in truth began long before the official campaign started.

For our part, The Iona Institute is proud to have helped represent the many hundreds of thousands of Irish people who would otherwise have had no voice in this referendum because all of the political parties backed a Yes vote.

Added Iona Institute Director David Quinn:

Quinn“We believe a fought a good campaign. It was always going to be an uphill battle. However, we helped to provide a voice to the hundreds of thousands of Irish people who did vote No. The fact that no political party supported them must be a concern from a democratic point of view…Going forward, we will continue to affirm the importance of the biological ties and of motherhood and fatherhood. We hope the Government will address the concerns voters on the No side have about the implications for freedom of religion and freedom of conscience.”

Mothers & Fathers Matter, the organization behind last week’s video featuring two gay men explaining their opposition to same-sex marriage, said:

“We offer our warm congratulations to the YES campaign on their victory. There are thousands of people who worked hard for them to achieve this result, and they can be justifiably happy with their efforts today. Though at times this campaign was unpleasant for people on all sides, nobody who involves themselves in a campaign does so with anything but the good of their country at heart. There is no better way to resolve difference than the way we are using today. From our point of view, we have represented a proportion of the population greater than those who support any political party. One in three Irish people in this campaign was not represented by the political establishment, the media, or the institutions of state. We are proud to have fought on behalf of those voices when nobody else would. Today’s result was achieved by the Government after they issued certain promises about surrogacy, adoption, and a range of other issues. A lot of voters believed those assurances and they must now be kept.”

Ireland Votes To Legalize Gay Marriage, Leaders On Both Sides Of Referendum Say

Ireland Votes To Legalize Gay Marriage, Leaders On Both Sides Of Referendum Say

DUBLIN (AP) — Ireland has voted resoundingly to legalize gay marriage in the world’s first national vote on the issue, leaders on both sides of the Irish referendum declared Saturday even as official ballot counting continued.

Senior figures from the “no” campaign, who sought to prevent Ireland’s constitution from being amended to permit same-sex marriages, say the only question is how large the “yes” side’s margin of victory will be from Friday’s vote.

“We’re the first country in the world to enshrine marriage equality in our constitution and do so by popular mandate. That makes us a beacon, a light to the rest of the world of liberty and equality. So it’s a very proud day to be Irish,” said Leo Varadkar, a Cabinet minister who came out as gay at the start of a government-led effort to amend Ireland’s conservative Catholic constitution.

“There is going to be a very substantial majority for a yes vote. I’m not at all surprised by that to be honest with you,” said Irish Sen. Ronan Mullen, one of only a handful of politicians who campaigned for rejection.

Political analyst Noel Whelan noted that “yes” majorities were being reported even in conservative rural districts and suggested the only question was how large the “yes” majority would be when all ballots in this predominantly Catholic nation of 4.6 million are counted.

Varadkar, who personally watched the votes being tabulated at the County Dublin ballot center, said the Irish capital looks to have voted around 70 percent in favor of gay marriage, while most districts outside the capital also were reporting strong “yes” leads. He said not a single district yet had reported a “no” majority. Official results come later Saturday.

The anti-gay marriage side credited “yes” campaigners with running a creative, compelling campaign that harnessed the power of social media to mobilize young voters, tens of thousands of whom voted for the first time Friday. They also said a “no” victory was always unlikely given that all political parties and most politicians backed the legalization of homosexual unions, just five years after parliament approved marriage-style civil partnerships for gay couples.

Fianna Fail party leader Michael Martin, whose party is traditionally closest to the Catholic Church but like all other parties campaigned to legalize gay marriage, said it “looks like an emphatic win for the yes side.” Voters in his native Cork were being recorded by observers as more than 60 percent yes.

John Lyons, one of the four openly gay lawmakers in Ireland’s 166-member parliament, said he was surprised by how many older voters he met on the campaign trail who were voting yes. But he paid special credit to the mobilization of younger voters, many of whom traveled home from work or studies abroad to vote.

“Most of the young people I canvassed with have never knocked on a door in their lives,” said Lyons, who represents northwest Dublin in parliament. “This says something about modern Ireland. Let’s never underestimate the electorate or what they think.”

Ireland Says 'Yes' to Marriage Equality in Resounding 2:1 Vote

Ireland Says 'Yes' to Marriage Equality in Resounding 2:1 Vote

Ireland

All signs point to a decisive ‘Yes’ victory in favor of equality in Ireland’s marriage referendum, the AP reports:

A strategist with Fine Gael, the country’s current ruling party, told the Irish Independent the results are turning out to be 2:1 ‘Yes’ vote, with the equality side capturing 65-66% of the vote nationwide.

Ireland has voted Yes to marriage equality and rejected fear and prejudice. In doing so, we have led the world. Oh happy day! #MarRef
