MPs Call For ‘Latte Levy’ To Cut Coffee Cup Waste

MPs Call For ‘Latte Levy’ To Cut Coffee Cup Waste
MPs are asking the Government to introduce a 25p charge on disposable coffee cups to be paid for on top of the price of a hot drink.

Waste cups are “an unsightly and damaging blight on the environment,” said the Environmental Audit Committee in a new report published Friday. The Committee’s proposed “latte levy” would be used to encourage customers to adopt reusable cups, while revenue from the levy would go into improving the UK’s recycling infrastructure for packaging waste.

While consumers have been led to believe disposable coffee cups are widely recyclable and recycled, the report pointed to evidence that less than 1% actually get recycled, in part because their plastic liner makes them difficult and costly to do so.

To coincide with the launch of the report, Committee chair Mary Creagh MP said a revolution in recycling is needed given the UK coffee shop market’s continued expansion and the current inadequate action on coffee cup waste.

“The UK throws away 2.5bn disposable coffee cups every year; enough to circle the planet five and a half times,” said Creagh. “Almost none are recycled and half a million a day are littered. Coffee cup producers and distributors have not taken action to rectify this, and Government has sat on its hands.”

The promotion of a charge for disposable cups, rather than a discount for customers bringing reusable cups, comes down to a question of effectiveness, according to the Committee. The report points out that while a number of large coffee retailers offer a 25p discount to customers bringing their own cups, awareness and uptake has been very low (around 1%) to date. In contrast, it says, the plastic bag charge reduced plastic bag usage by 83% in its first year.

“Research has shown that consumers react better to an additional charge than a discount,” Creagh told HuffPost. She also said consumers needn’t bear the brunt of the levy since companies like Starbucks already offer a discount for customers with reusable cups so “they could easily absorb the additional 25p cost – the base charge could be 25p less than it is now, and the 25p increase would take it to its current price”.

Whether coffee shops want to adopt a “latte levy” is a different question. Pret a Manger CEO Clive Schlee, writing for HuffPost about the chain’s recent decision to introduce a 50p discount for customers bringing a reusable cup, said: “We debated whether charging people for using paper cups felt right. We decided that it goes against our instincts as we would prefer to be generous to our customers than to tax them.”

Dr. Mathis Wackernagel, founder and CEO of the Global Footprint Network, welcomes proposed initiatives such as the “latte levy” but said the UK requires far more ambitious policies to address its heavy material resource dependency if it wants to have a resilient economy.

“An economy requires resources to run on,” he told HuffPost. “The triple challenge we’re facing globally is one of a growing population with growing material aspirations and the need to phase out fossil fuels way before 2050.

“Already the world requires 70% more than the planet’s ecosystems can renew; the UK’s current material demands are four times larger than what its own ecosystems replenish. This points out how poorly prepared our economies are to meet the resource challenges we face. This is not just a Starbucks problem, it is one for the 10 Downing Streets of the world.”

The “latte levy” is one of several potential solutions to disposable packaging outlined by the Committee. Others include a target for all disposable coffee cups to be recycled by 2023, with a ban on all disposable coffee cups if the target is not met.

Sophie Smith’s Family ‘Fear For The Worst’ After Police Reveal Missing Student Left Notes ‘Outlining Her Intentions’

Sophie Smith’s Family ‘Fear For The Worst’ After Police Reveal Missing Student Left Notes ‘Outlining Her Intentions’
Police searching for missing Sophie Smith, who went missing in the early hours of Boxing Day, have said the 21-year-old left notes for her loved ones “outlining her intentions”.

The missing university student, form Gorleston, Norfolk, had been suffering severe anxiety and depression, and was receiving treatment for her mental health, police said.

Norfolk Police said her mother and close family and friends had been supporting her through this difficult time.

She was seen on CCTV at about 3am running in the direction of the beach.

Police helicopters, lifeboats and fire crews have been searching for Ms Smith since her disappearance.

Inspector Will Drummond said on Thursday: “We know from speaking to her family that Sophie had previously spoken about her intention to enter the sea to take her own life.

“Sadly, we can also confirm that Sophie had left a note and messages for loved ones, outlining her intentions.

Sophie’s mother, Lynn Shaw, said: “Sophie’s step-father Kevin and I would like to thank the public and police for their continued support and dedication in searching for Sophie.

“In our hearts we hold every hope she will return safe and well. However, as a family, knowing the troubles she was experiencing, we do fear the worst for our little girl

“Sophie had openly discussed how she was struggling and was receiving treatment. I would urge anyone suffering anxiety or depression not to fight that battle alone and seek help.”

HRC Responds to Failure of Discriminatory and Invasive “Voter Fraud” Commission Led by Mike Pence

HRC Responds to Failure of Discriminatory and Invasive “Voter Fraud” Commission Led by Mike Pence

HRC issued the following response after the Trump-Pence administration announced they would disband the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, led by Vice President Mike Pence, following numerous lawsuits and no real evidence of election fraud.

Last May, Mike Pence was named Chairman of the newly-created Commission to prove he and Donald Trump’s claim that millions of black and Latino voters had cast ballots illegally in the 2016 election. It was disbanded on Wednesday, largely due to the efforts of a coalition of organizations, including the Brennan Center, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, state chapters of the NAACP, the American Civil Liberties Union, the League of Women Voters, and the League of United Latin American Citizens. HRC is proud to be part of this coalition.

“This is a victory for democracy,” said David Stacy, Government Affairs Director for HRC. “The Trump-Pence administration’s dangerous and false claims of election fraud were a farce from the start and a threat to the voting rights of all Americans, particularly citizens of color. Our government has an obligation to protect the right to privacy of all its citizens and ensure their fair and equal access to the ballot box. Mike Pence has failed miserably on all counts.”

After seven months and an earmarked budget of $250,000 for FY2017, Mike Pence has been unable to uncover significant evidence of voter fraud despite maintaining since December, 2016 that millions of people had engaged in criminal conduct during the election.

The Commission immediately ran into trouble when they ordered election officials in all 50 states to hand over private voter data, including Social Security Numbers and voting histories. This was met by the refusal and outcry of state election officials, including Republican Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, who told the Commission to “go jump in the Gulf of Mexico”.

In November, Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, a member himself, sued the Commission, claiming it lacked transparency and expressing a fear that it would lead to policy recommendations that hadn’t been properly vetted. This followed an announcement by the Government Accountability Office that they were opening an investigation into the Commission on the request of several senators.

Additionally, the NAACP-LDF has issued a FOIA request with the Department of Homeland Security, whom Trump has now tasked to take over the fraud panel, to see all work and communication done by the Commission.

The fight to protect fair access to the ballot box will not end here. The Human Rights Campaign will continue to support efforts to protect voting rights.

Neues Jahr, neuer Anzug
