The GLAAD Wrap: 'One Day at a Time' renewed, Laverne Cox joins ABC pilot, Tribeca announces lineup and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1)  A new clip on the documentary about the historic same-sex marriage Supreme Court case has been released, Freedom to Marry takes a behind-the-scenes look at case. The film is already playing in New York, and will be shown in select Los Angeles theaters this Friday, March 10th. Click here to find out where to watch the film, and watch the clip below.

2) The lineup  for the Tribeca Film Festival has been announced. This year’s LGBTQ-inclusive features are Saturday Church, Tom of Finland, Nobody’s Watching, and The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson. Saturday Church is about 14-year-old Ulysses who finds an outlet for music and dance through a transgender youth community called Saturday Church, and Tom of Finland tells the story of artist Touko Laarksonen who is known for his homoerotic art. The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson tells the story of Marsha “Pay it No Mind” Johnson, a Greenwich Village artist and legendery trans activist. She co-founded the organization Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries (STAR) and the STAR House to provide resources to and advocate for disadvantaged young trans women and drag queens, and is most well known for her role in the Stonewall riots of 1969.The short films category includes Love the SinnerThe World in Your Window, and Dive.

3) Kings, Queens, and In-Betweens is now available on iTunes. The documentary follows the lives of eight different drag kings, drag queens, and transgender performers in Columbus, Ohio. It explores what gender is and how people express their gender identity, and discusses the differences between gender, sex, and sexual orientation. Watch the trailer below, and check out the movie on iTunes. In other film news, out actors Kate McKinnon and Colton Haynes star in the upcoming film Rough Night. The Canadian film Below Her Mouth will premiere in theaters and on VOD services in the U.S. on April 28.

4) More renewal news is trickling in. Netflix has renewed One Day at a Time for season two. Freeform has also announced the return dates for several of their shows. Shadowhunters will return June 5th at 8 pm, and The Fosters will premiere July 11th at 8 pm. Their new show The Bold Type will premiere July 11th, after The Fosters.

5) The CW’s Dynasty reboot pilot has cast Rafael de la Fuente (When We Rise) to star opposite of Grant Show. Sam (De la Fuente) sleeps with Blake Carrington (Show) who is the son of his family’s rival. ABC’s new comedy pilot The Trustee, has added Laverne Cox as the co-lead. The comedy is about Eliza Radley (Meaghan Rath), a detective who enlists the help of Amanda Jones (Cox), an ex-con who is finishing her sentence by helping out the police department.

6) A new series by HBO and the BBC will tell the story of Anne Lister. The series, Shibden Hall, follows the life of Anne Lister who wanted to transform her ancestral home in West Yorkshire in 1832. To accomplish that, she must marry into wealth, but her plans revolved around marrying a woman. The Alex Delaware novels will be adapted for television by IDW Entertainment. Alex Delaware is a forensic psychologist who works for the LAPD, and he most often works with Milo Sturgis, a gay homicide detective. The book series originally launched in 1985 and is considered America’s longest-running contemporary crime series. Amazon is also developing a new series by producer/director Jill Soloway. Set in 1942 during WWII, the series will follow a group of women in Texas as they try to form the first all-girl rodeo.

7) The trailers for Viceland’s Twiz & Tuck and Logo’s Fire Island have been released. Twiz & Tuck is a docuseries that follows two friends as they road trip across the country. Twiz is a gender fluid artist and Tuck is a trans man, the two drive across country to visit places that were important in their lives. The show premieres March 27th. Check out the trailer below. Logo’s Fire Island is a new reality series following six friends as they party it up at Fire Island for a summer. Click here to see the trailer.
