NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, tonight released the following response to the inclusion of a LGBTQ question during the sixth presidential primary debate hosted by POLITICO and PBS NewsHour in Los Angeles. Tonight’s question reversed what was an alarming trend in the 2020 election cycle where zero questions on LGBTQ-specific issues were asked on the debate stage, and when anti-LGBTQ activists plan to use transgender Americans as a wedge issue in the upcoming 2020 elections.
“With anti-LGBTQ activists planning an onslaught of false ads against LGBTQ Americans next year, it is important now more than ever for the candidates to proactively speak out against anti-LGBTQ discrimination, and tonight’s debate did just that,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “LGBTQ voters need to know that they have a true ally with the next president — and tonight’s question about violence against transgender Americans rightfully brought to light an epidemic that continues to cripple the LGBTQ community, with 2019 being named the deadliest year on record for the trans community.”
The previous absence of LGBTQ-specific debate questions occurred as anti-LGBTQ activists plan to use the transgender community as a dividing issue in the upcoming 2020 elections. As GLAAD pointed out in its post-2019 election report, anti-LGBTQ activists used the media — both traditional and digital media — to air anti-trans ads in states like Kentucky and Louisiana, which attacked and put the safety of transgender Americans in jeopardy — all in the hopes of galvanizing their base to win political elections.
The effort by anti-LGBTQ activists has been executed in a top-down method starting with President Trump and his administration. Since taking office in 2017, President Trump has made 132 anti-LGBTQ attacks — with a majority of his attacks coming focusing solely on the transgender community. This includes Trump’s ban on transgender servicemembers from serving in the nation’s armed forces and preventing trans Americans from getting access to affordable health care. Ryan O’Connell’s ‘Special’ Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix
Ryan O’Connell’s groundbreaking comedy series Special, about a gay man with cerebral palsy, has been renewed for a second season at Netflix, with eight episodes on order.
“Warner Horizon Scripted Television will join Warner Bros. Digital Networks’ Stage 13 and That’s Wonderful Productions as producers of the series for season 2,” according to Deadline. “Jessica Hecht and Punam Patel will return as series regulars for the second season.”
Special is loosely adapted from star Ryan O’Connell’s book I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves.
The Season 1 plotline: “Special is a distinctive and uplifting new series about a gay man, Ryan with mild cerebral palsy who decides to rewrite his identity and finally go after the life he wants. After years of dead-end internships, working in his pajamas as a blogger and communicating mostly via text, Ryan eventually figured out how to take his life from bleak to chic and began limping towards adulthood. “

Singer-songwriter Christopher Sorensen has debuted a new music video for his track “Way. Way. Back.” Towleroad readers may recall the video for Sorensen’s “Afterglow“, in which a closeted 18-year-old teen and an older man meet on a gay hook-up app.
Said Sorensen: “‘Way. Way. Back’ tells the story of a gay man who returns to his hometown for a funeral. He’s haunted by memories of a former love from his youth and the events that tore them apart. The video shows how we collect trauma throughout our lives, weighing us down as we try to move on. Maybe by facing our pasts we can find a new beginning.”

“As an openly-gay singer and songwriter, I’ve been compelled to tell stories about coming to terms with identity and the challenges I and others have overcome,” added Sorensen. “I’m also a screenwriter, so I like to use my music videos as an opportunity to create short films. The music track was created with Australia-based producer, Arizon. The video was directed by Jasmine Sorensen and was the collaboration of a lot of wonderful people, who donated their time and support to make this possible.”

Towleroad readers may remember Wils, a rising star in Singapore’s pop scene, who got dropped by his label after he came out to them. At that time, Wils went independent and released a gorgeous music video that served as his official coming out.
Now, Wils has released his latest track, “Empty”, which takes on the loneliness of gay hook-up culture.
Said Wils: Sometimes the biggest challenge we have to face is the internal struggle we have with ourselves. ‘Empty’ is about facing that loneliness when we’re looking for love outside of ourselves instead of within ourselves.”
“Growing up, I used to hide my sexuality because I felt like being gay was wrong,” Wils added. “I didn’t feel like I belonged and I never knew how to find my community. It was terrifying to grow up hiding like that. I hope that LGBTQ-inclusive media and art will help others that feel underrepresented understand that it’s okay to be gay.”

Jordan Steffy, the 16-year-old LaPorte, Indiana high school student who went viral this week in a video defending himself against a bully he said had been calling him “faggot” for years, appeared on Tamron Hall’s daytime talk show this week. He spoke to Hall about what led to the fight.
Hall and Jordan noted that his bully is now getting attacked on social media, and Jordan told Hall he wants it to stop: “I want all the negative comments going towards him to stop. I have no idea what’s going on in his life, as he has no idea what’s going on in mine. I can’t hold what he said accountable against him, because I don’t know how he was raised. … I don’t know if it was a heat-of-the-moment thing. I don’t know if it was what he truly believes in. But I can’t hold him accountable for being bullied against hundreds if not thousands of people.”
Jordan is leaving LaPorte High School to be home schooled after the incident. He doesn’t appear to be happy about it.

ER Nurse Suspended After Anti-LGBTQ Facebook Rant: ‘These F**king C**k Sucking Homos Think They Deserve Everything’
An emergency room nurse who works for Cincinatti’s TriHealth has been suspended after a transphobic, homophobic Facebook rant was brought to her employer’s attention by gay City Councilman Chris Seelbach.
Cindy Carter, the nurse, made the remarks on Facebook in response to Procter & Gamble’s decision to remove the female “Venus” symbol from the packaging on its ‘Always’ menstrual products.
Wrote Carter: “F**k ‘Always.’ This country has gone to complete sh*t. Women have periods, men don’t. Why do certain applications ask for LEGAL SEX … you’re either male or female. There’s no f**king in between. Jesus people – get your heads on straight. Grab a mirror – it’s easy. You either have a dick or you don’t.”
Carter continued. “I swear, these f**king c*ck sucking h*mos think that they deserve everything. And the confused woman are just as bad. Men need to be men. Women need to be women. Stop the stupid ass ‘man buns’ and man you buns up to do some hard labor.”
Seelbach posted a screenshot of the full exchange (below), writing, “Cindy Carter is a nurse at TriHealth. As an LGBTQ+ person, I don’t feel comfortable using TriHealth’s services until I know a person who thinks I’m a ‘fucking cock sucking homo’ would ever treat me. Until TriHealth terminates the employment of Cindy Carter, I will not be using their services. #BoycottTriHealth”
Seelbach later added, “No one who thinks I am a “f**king c*ck sucking h*mo” and that transgender people don’t exist should be treating patients.”
WCPO reports: “The nurse at the center of the controversy was suspended for her own safety and that of others, according to an official TriHealth statement. She did not respond to requests for comment. An investigation is ongoing. In an internal memo, TriHealth wrote that every patient is entitled to reliable and compassionate care.”
Seelbach posted a video following the nurse’s suspension, updating constitutents and followers on the situation and saying he was pleased with TriHealth’s actions.

In an interview with CBS News on Friday night, Tulsi Gabbard responded to remarks by Hillary Clinton that she’s being groomed by Russia as a third party spoiler candidate.
Said Clinton to David Plouffe: “I’m not making any predictions, but I think they’ve got their eye on someone who’s currently in the Democratic primary and are grooming her to be the third-party candidate. She’s the favorite of the Russians. They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her so far. That’s assuming Jill Stein will give it up, which she might not because she’s also a Russian asset. Yeah, she’s a Russian asset—I mean, totally. They know they can’t win without a third-party candidate. So I don’t know who it’s going to be, but I will guarantee you they will have a vigorous third-party challenge in the key states that they most needed.”
A Clinton spokesman later affirmed that it was Gabbard about whom she was referring.

Gabbard responded to Clinton’s remarks in a tweet Friday afternoon: “Great! Thank you @HillaryClinton. You, the queen of warmongers, embodiment of corruption, and personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party for so long, have finally come out from behind the curtain. From the day I announced my candidacy, there has been a concerted campaign to destroy my reputation. We wondered who was behind it and why. Now we know — it was always you, through your proxies and powerful allies in the corporate media and war machine, afraid of the threat I pose. It’s now clear that this primary is between you and me. Don’t cowardly hide behind your proxies. Join the race directly.”
She later told CBS News that she would not be running as a third party candidate and denounced Clinton several times.
Said Gabbard: “I’ve been very clear, I will not be leaving the Democratic party, I will not be running as an independent or a third-party candidate. I am running as a Democrat to take our party back, away from the control of people like Hillary Clinton and the warmongering and corrupt, powerful establishment and return our party into the hands of the people. Make it so the Democratic party is once again a party of, by and for the people, a party that will fight for the people, fight to protect the planet and that will fight for peace.”

We literally are going to make America more greater than its ever been and keep it that way.”
