Trump Asks Federal Judge to Suspend Order That Military Accept Transgender Recruits on January 1

Trump Asks Federal Judge to Suspend Order That Military Accept Transgender Recruits on January 1

The Trump administration has asked a federal judge to stay an order requiring that the military begin accepting transgender recruits on January 1.

The Hill reports:

“Specifically, Defendants request that the Court stay the portion of its preliminary injunction requiring Defendants to begin accessing transgender individuals into the military on January 1, 2018, pending a decision by the D.C. Circuit on Defendants’ appeal,” the government wrote in a motion filed late Wednesday.

The administration and the plaintiffs have asked for a decision by noon Monday.

In October, Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia blocked President Trump’s ban on transgender troops while a lawsuit against it works its way through court.

Last month, after a motion by the Trump administration, Kollar-Kotelly issued a follow-up ruling clarifying the earlier one that said the military must accept transgender recruits by Jan. 1, as it had planned to do prior to Trump’s ban.

HRC Releases 2018 Buyer’s Guide In Time for Holiday Shopping Season

HRC Releases 2018 Buyer’s Guide In Time for Holiday Shopping Season

As the holiday shopping season kicks off, equality-minded shoppers can stand with companies who stand with the LGBTQ community by using the new HRC Foundation’s popular consumer guide to hundreds of American companies to choose brands and retail outlets committed to LGBTQ-inclusive workplace policies and practices.

The Buying for Workplace Equality guide, released today by the HRC Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s LGBTQ civil rights organization, was first issued more than a decade ago. It provides invaluable consumer information based on company scores reported in HRC’s annual Corporate Equality Index (CEI), as well as HRC-researched data on additional well-known companies and their brands.

“Our annual Buying for Workplace Equality guide provides quick, user-friendly help in selecting everything from groceries to cars, allowing fair-minded consumers to use their wallets to resist attacks on the LGBTQ community by supporting brands committed to fully inclusive workplaces,” said Deena Fidas, Director of HRC Foundation’s Workplace Equality Program. “ Every year we hear from members of the LGBTQ community and many other consumers who want to choose brands that align with their priorities of workplace fairness. Using the Buying for Workplace Equality guide this holiday season helps ensure that their dollars go to businesses that support equality.”

Through the CEI, the HRC Foundation proactively rates more than 1,000 Fortune 500 companies and top law firms on LGBTQ-inclusive workplace policies and practices. The new guide includes more than 750 companies, 600 of them rated in the CEI, and an additional 140 independently researched by the HRC Foundation. A total 5,600 affiliated businesses and brands are featured in this year’s report.

The Buying for Workplace Equality guide sorts businesses by sectors, assigning them a score ranging from zero to 100 based on LGBTQ workplace equality, as measured by the CEI and HRC-researched data.

Businesses and their products are divided based on their CEI rating into red, yellow and green categories so that consumers can easily determine which brands support LGBTQ workplace equality:

  • Green (80-100): Businesses/brands with the highest workplace equality scores.
  • Yellow (46-79): Businesses/brands that have taken steps toward a fair-minded workplace and receive a moderate workplace equality score.
  • Red (0-45): Businesses/brands that receive our lowest workplace equality scores

Now more than ever, it is important to support businesses that support equality. For more information on the Buying for Workplace Equality guide and to search by company category, go online to www.hrc.org/buyersguide.

Up to 400 Communities Across Nation Join National “I Am Jazz” Day of Readings

Up to 400 Communities Across Nation Join National “I Am Jazz” Day of Readings

Today, in up to 400 communities across the country, thousands of parents, educators and allies will stand in solidarity with transgender and non-binary youth by hosting school and community readings of “I Am Jazz,” a children’s book by transgender teen trailblazer and HRC Youth Ambassador Jazz Jennings. The unprecedented demonstration of support for trans and non-binary youth – from grassroots events in libraries, schools and community centers to readings on Capitol Hill – comes after a year of significant attacks on the rights of transgender people.

“Transgender and non-binary youth deserve to know that their communities, neighbors and educators see them, love them and affirm them,” said Mary Beth Maxwell, HRC’s Senior Vice President for Research, Programs and Training. “These grassroots readings demonstrate the breadth and depth of support for trans and non-binary students that exists in big cities and small towns throughout the nation. What started as a simple act of inclusion by a parent in Mt. Horeb, Wisc., in 2015 has transformed into an annual nationwide day of action and underscores the power of even one voice to spark a movement and effect positive change.”

“I am honored to join more than 200 communities across the nation as we stand with transgender and non-binary youth in National “I Am Jazz” Day of Readings,” said NEA President Lily Eskelsen García. “Now more than ever—what with the fear, humiliation, and discriminatory policies coming from the Trump administration—we take this opportunity for educators, schools and communities to send a powerful message of love, support and affirmation for transgender and non-binary students. As this administration threatens our students and our values, we will double-down on our efforts to protect our most vulnerable citizens.”

The national day of readings was inspired by the more than 600 residents of tiny Mount Horeb, Wisc., who in 2015 unequivocally supported a young transgender student and her family and rebuked bigotry and censorship by showing up for a public reading of the book. The reading was organized by a caring local parent after legal threats by an outside anti-LGBTQ hate group forced the transgender student’s school to cancel plans to support her by reading the book in class.

Over the last year, the transgender community has come under attack from anti-equality activists and politicians. In one of their first major acts, the Trump-Pence Administration’s Departments of Justice and Education rescinded lifesaving guidance promoting the protection of transgender students. This past summer, the President announced he would  reinstate a ban on qualified transgender people serving openly in the military. Meanwhile, over the past three years, more than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced in roughly 38 states around the nation, many targeting transgender youth and, increasingly, anti-LGBTQ groups are also targeting schools and local districts seeking to welcome all students with inclusive policies and practices.

The nationwide act of solidarity is sponsored by the HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools program and the NEA. It unites in action youth, educators, and allies who are hosting readings of “I Am Jazz” in hundreds of schools, churches, bookstores, homes, and community centers in states across the country.

HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools is the nation’s premier professional development program providing training to elementary school educators to welcome diverse families, create LGBTQ and gender-inclusive schools, prevent bias-based bullying, and support transgender and gender expansive students. HRC’s Welcoming Schools has created this guide to help organizers of “I Am Jazz” reading events build more affirming and supportive spaces for transgender and non-binary youth.

HRC Endorses Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin for Re-election

HRC Endorses Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin for Re-election

Today, HRC announced its endorsement of Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin in her bid for re-election.

“We were proud to stand with Senator Baldwin when she made history in 2012, and today we are thrilled to enthusiastically endorse her bid for a second term in the U.S. Senate,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “A true trailblazer, Senator Baldwin has been at the center of every battle for full equality, fighting tirelessly on behalf of Wisconsin and the American people. Her leadership and voice remain crucial in the effort to advance equality and we look forward to continuing to work with her in the U.S. Senate.”

“I am honored to have HRC’s endorsement and proud to be their long standing partner in this fight,” said Senator Baldwin. “Every Wisconsinite and every American, no matter who they are, should be able to have a fair chance to earn a living, provide for their families, and live free from fear of discrimination. I will continue fighting for these ideals every day as a U.S. Senator and work to ensure full federal equality for everyone.”

Baldwin is the first openly gay U.S. senator and the first woman elected to the chamber from Wisconsin. Throughout her public service, she has been a pioneer for equality: Senator Baldwin was a leader in the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” an early supporter of marriage equality, a champion for federal hate crimes protections, and co-author of the Equality Act, crucial legislation that would extend comprehensive federal protections to LGBTQ Americans. In addition to Baldwin’s strong civil rights record, she has been a voice for middle class Wisconsinites, leading the fight for quality, affordable health care access and an economy that works for everyone. She has defended the Affordable Care Act and is a leader of Buy American reforms to fuel job growth in the United States.

In July, HRC announced the earliest, largest grassroots expansion in its 37-year history ahead of 2018 with the launch of HRC Rising — a campaign to accelerate progress in states from coast-to-coast, resist the politics of hate, fight anti-LGBTQ legislation, and fuel pro-equality candidates and initiatives. HRC has thus far announced six priority states, which include Wisconsin, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, HRC has identified more than 560,000 Wisconsinites as likely “Equality Voters” — those who are strong supporters of policies that advance LGBTQ equality, including marriage equality and other measures prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. HRC engaged Catalist, a data and analytics firm, to create a voter equality model that predicts every registered voters’ likelihood to support LGBTQ equality.  This model has allowed HRC to identify and direct outreach to millions of  “Equality Voters” in crucial battleground states, moving them to action in support of pro-equality issues and legislation, as well as our endorsed candidates.

Paid for by Human Rights Campaign PAC and authorized by Tammy Baldwin for Senate
