7 Silver Linings In The Dark Cloud Of President Elect Donald J. Trump

Life feels pretty bleak right now. But despite the unreality of the election results, there are bits of good news. A little silver lining comes in handy at a time like this.

Here are seven potential upsides:

A bunch of wingnuts lost

A handful of really awful candidates lost their elections. Gay sheriff Paul Babeu–the one who allegedly threatened to deport his Mexican boyfriend–failed in his Congressional bid. Long-time Rep. John Mica of Florida, who promoted legislation to protect the rights of marriage equality discriminators, was booted from office. Another Congressional Republican and marriage equality opponent, Scott Garrett of New Jersey, also lost. And while the race hasn’t been called yet, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory is lagging by just a few thousand votes in his his re-election bid. If he loses, it will be in large part because of his anti-trans and anti-gay policies. 

Clinton won the popular vote

Cold comfort, but it’s worth remembering that more voters agreed with her vision of America than Donald Trump’s.

Marriage equality is safe for now

The next Supreme Court justice will no doubt be from the far right. But as long as Anthony Kennedy is on the Court, it will keep its tilt in our favor.

Trump isn’t a hard-core homophobe

For all Trump’s faults, reflexive homophobia is not among them. He’s the first Republican presidential nominee who was willing to have signs at his rallies calling out LGBTQ support. He’s not going to be gunning for us the way that Ted Cruz would have. The problem, of course, is the awful people who surround him.  

All the marijuana initiatives won

Recreational marijuana will now be legal in five (maybe six) states, including the most populous, California. All things considered, perfect timing.

The prospect of a GOP civil war

Trump holds grudges, and he has a big one against House Speaker Paul Ryan who was a lukewarm supporter at best, stinging critic at worst. Then there are John McCain and Lindsey Graham, and a bunch of other establishment Republicans who withdrew their support from him or never endorsed him in the first place. Trump could be magnanimous in victory, or he could decide to punish them for sins. The former makes more sense, but the latter would be more fun to watch.

Alec Baldwin has a full-time job for four years

His Trump imitation will be in demand. At least you will be able to laugh through your tears.

Trump’s Domestic Transition Team Leader is a Hate Group Member Who Believes in Curing Gay People

Ken Blackwell, an anti-LGBT “traditional marriage” defender who said that homosexuality is a choice that can be cured, (comparing it to kleptomania and arson) and has blamed mass shootings in America on “the crumbling of the moral foundation of the country” and “the attack on natural marriage and the family,” has been tapped by Donald Trump to lead his domestic transition team.

Blackwell is also a senior fellow at the anti-LGBT hate group Family Research Council.

The Columbus Dispatch reports:

Blackwell, according to a document obtained by Politico, is in charge of the Trump “action team” examining the departments of energy, environmental protection, labor, transportation, health and human services, housing and urban development, interior and agriculture.

Blackwell backed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the Republican primaries, but came aboard with Trump after he secured the nomination.

Reached by The Cincinnati Enquirer, Blackwell said he could not discuss his duties because he had signed a non-disclosure agreement.

Cleveland.com adds:

Blackwell, 68, a fiscal and social conservative, has a long history in the Buckeye State.

The former Cincinnati mayor was the first black major party nominee when he ran for Ohio governor in 2006. He lost to Ted Strickland. He also served as Ohio treasurer and secretary of state. More recently, he worked at the Family Research Council as a senior fellow for human rights and constitutional governance.

During the campaign Blackwell served on Ted Cruz’s “religious liberty” advisory council intended to help the Texas senator sound the dog whistle of “religious freedom” and advocate for discrimination against LGBT Americans.

Trump Blasts ‘Unfair’ Protesters of His Election on Twitter, Then Backtracks

Donald Trump’s fragile ego couldn’t hold off for long with the insults and the whining on Twitter. For someone who has just been elected the leader of a democracy, his tweet suggested he doesn’t approve of the people’s right to protest.

Last night he tweeted a reaction to the demonstrations that have taken over major cities protesting his election win:

“Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!”

Violent or not, this is what democracy looks like.

Nine hours later he (or someone in his circle) appeared to backtrack on that sentiment:

Big Brother is in the midst of its first ever online season, dubbed Big Brother Over The Top. The contestants were locked in The Big Brother house during the presidential election and only just told who won.

They were as shocked as the rest of us.

Via The Hollywood Reporter: 

“Donald Trump won the f— presidential election?” a stunned Duncan exclaimed. “I’m going to cry,” added Stockton. “A reality TV star is our president,” a shocked Morgan Willett from Austin added. “Well, I guess we can be president.”

“Gay people, where were you? Minorities, where were you?” said openly gay contestant Jason Roy from Massachusetts. Adding, “Can we just stay in here for the next four years?”
