lgbt+ bracelets

Today I had the idea to make a pair of chainmaille bracelets in the colors of my lgbt+ flags. The one is in asexuality colors of black, grey, white, and purple. The other is in the nonbinary colors of black, purple, white, and yellow (with some silver rows). These bracelets are made from aluminum jump rings and rubber jump rings, so they’re comfortable and stretchy. 🙂

Handmade by MeriGreenleaf (Elfling Creations).

Gay Civil Rights Attorney Dies After Setting Himself on Fire in Brooklyn Park

Gay Civil Rights Attorney Dies After Setting Himself on Fire in Brooklyn Park

David Buckel / YouTube

David Buckel a gay civil rights attorney who was a lead attorney in the case involving murdered transgender Nebraskan Brandon Teena, died early Saturday morning after setting himself on fire in a Brooklyn park.

The New York Times, which along with several other media outlets was sent a note from Buckel explaining his suicide, said the note urged people “to lead less selfish lives as a way to protect the planet.”

The NYT reports:

While serving as marriage project director and senior counsel at Lambda Legal, a national organization that fights for the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, Mr. Buckel was the strategist behind important same-sex marriage cases in New Jersey and Iowa.

Friends said that after he left the organization, Mr. Buckel became involved in environmental causes, which he alluded to in his note as the reason he decided to end his life by self-immolation with fossil fuels.

“Pollution ravages our planet, oozing inhabitability via air, soil, water and weather,” he wrote in the email sent to The Times. “Most humans on the planet now breathe air made unhealthy by fossil fuels, and many die early deaths as a result — my early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves.”

Buckel was 60 years old.

Camilla Taylor, Director of Constitutional Litigation and Acting Legal Director, issued the following statement:

“The news of David’s death is heartbreaking. This is a tremendous loss for our Lambda Legal family, but also for the entire movement for social justice. David was an indefatigable attorney and advocate, and also a dedicated and loving friend to so many. He will be remembered for his kindness, devotion, and vision for justice.

“This is a tragic loss for our Lambda Legal family and for the social justice movement. Our hearts go out to all who knew him. David was a beautiful human being who was universally kind to everyone at Lambda Legal, committed to his clients, and devoted to our work.

“David was a brilliant legal visionary. David helped create Lambda Legal’s focus on LGBT youth. His work on Nabozny v. Podlesny resulted in a landmark victory for a high school student forced to drop out of school as a result of brutality perpetrated by other students and inaction by his school administrators. It was the first time a federal court had ever held that schools have an obligation to prevent anti-gay bullying, and put schools across the country on notice that they were responsible for putting a stop to it. His thoughtful and engaging advocacy broke through many stubborn misconceptions and showed it was possible and necessary for our movement to speak up for bullied, ostracized LGBT young people.

As Lambda Legal’s Marriage Project Director, he led our work nationwide seeking the freedom to marry. He brought Lewis v. Harris, resulting in a New Jersey Supreme Court victory that recognized the tangible and dignitary harms to same-sex couples and their children from being excluded from the rights and responsibilities of marriage. He championed filing a marriage lawsuit in state court in Iowa in 2005, at a time when only Massachusetts permitted same-sex couples to marry. When the Iowa Supreme Court delivered us a unanimous victory in 2009, Iowa was only the third state in the country where same-sex couples could marry. The decision vindicated David’s firm belief that we could win such cases even in the heartland, and propelled us to victories elsewhere.

“David also led Lambda Legal’s work to secure justice and accountability for the murder of Brandon Teena, a transgender man who was brutally raped and then killed by his rapists after law enforcement failed to intervene.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to all those who loved David. We have lost a movement leader, a colleague, and a friend. We will honor his life by continuing his fight for a better world.”

Tortured Trump Thrashes at James Comey in Sunday Tweetstorm

Tortured Trump Thrashes at James Comey in Sunday Tweetstorm

An aggrieved, tortured and manic Donald Trump took to Twitter Sunday morning to air his fury about fired former FBI Director James Comey, whose new book has obviously wedged itself well under the president’s skin.

Tweeted Trump: “Unbelievably, James Comey states that Polls, where Crooked Hillary was leading, were a factor in the handling (stupidly) of the Clinton Email probe. In other words, he was making decisions based on the fact that he thought she was going to win, and he wanted a job. Slimeball!”

Trump then tweeted that Comey should be in prison: “The big questions in Comey’s badly reviewed book aren’t answered like, how come he gave up Classified Information (jail), why did he lie to Congress (jail), why did the DNC refuse to give Server to the FBI (why didn’t they TAKE it), why the phony memos, McCabe’s $700,000 & more?”

And more: “Comey throws AG Lynch “under the bus!” Why can’t we all find out what happened on the tarmac in the back of the plane with Wild Bill and Lynch? Was she promised a Supreme Court seat, or AG, in order to lay off Hillary. No golf and grandkids talk (give us all a break)!”

Then Trump took a brief break to whine about how his bombing of Syria wasn’t praised enough by the press: “The Syrian raid was so perfectly carried out, with such precision, that the only way the Fake News Media could demean was by my use of the term “Mission Accomplished.” I knew they would seize on this but felt it is such a great Military term, it should be brought back. Use often!”

But then back to Comey: ‘I never asked Comey for Personal Loyalty. I hardly even knew this guy. Just another of his many lies. His “memos” are self serving and FAKE!’

And then Trump turned to the FBI raid of his personal lawyer Michael Cohen’s office: “Attorney Client privilege is now a thing of the past. I have many (too many!) lawyers and they are probably wondering when their offices, and even homes, are going to be raided with everything, including their phones and computers, taken. All lawyers are deflated and concerned!”

But then it was back to Comey: “Slippery James Comey, a man who always ends up badly and out of whack (he is not smart!), will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!”

Finally, a knock at Obama: “Just hit 50% in the Rasmussen Poll, much higher than President Obama at same point. With all of the phony stories and Fake News, it’s hard to believe! Thank you America, we are doing Great Things.”
