Maryland State Legislature Sends Bill to Protect LGBTQ Youth from “Conversion Therapy” to Gov. Hogan

Maryland State Legislature Sends Bill to Protect LGBTQ Youth from “Conversion Therapy” to Gov. Hogan

Today, HRC along with FreeState Justice, a legal advocacy organization that seeks to improve the lives of LGBTQ Marylanders, and WISE urged Maryland Governor Larry Hogan to sign SB 1028 — legislation protecting LGBTQ youth in the state from the dangerous and debunked practice of so-called “conversion therapy.” This important bill was passed today in the Maryland House of Delegates by a vote of 95-27 and was previously approved by the Maryland State Senate. If signed by Governor Hogan, Maryland would join the growing number of states and municipalities adopting critical protections for LGBTQ youth.

“All children deserve to live their lives authentically and should never be subjected to the abusive practice of so-called conversion therapy,” said HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof. “This dangerous and inhumane practice has no basis in science and is uniformly rejected by every major mental health organization in the country. We thank the state legislators who voted to protect LGBTQ youth and now call on Governor Hogan to sign this crucially important legislation.”

“The Maryland General Assembly has chosen to protect our youth by joining the growing list of states banning conversion therapy,” said FreeState Justice Executive Director Mark Procopio. “These widely discredited and harmful practices have no place here. Governor Hogan’s signature on this legislation will send a message to LGBTQ youth across our state that they are perfect just the way they are.”

SB1028 was introduced in the Maryland State Senate by Senator Richard Madaleno and in the House of Delegates by Delegate Bonnie Cullison and passed the legislature with bipartisan support.

Senator Madaleno said, “No minor should be forced to go through a practice that clearly every reputable health care organization has dismissed as being both ineffective and unethical. All it does is create more harm and more anxiety for the young person. I am pleased, and frankly, relieved that this bill has passed: relieved, because this bill will help save so many young people’s lives.”

Delegate Cullison said, “I am so grateful and happy to have been a part of this affirmation of our LBGTQ youth. Today, with passage of SB 1028, Maryland has made a strong statement that these young people are not broken–they are beautiful! We owe them our support and our protection under the law.”

There is no credible evidence that conversion therapy can change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. To the contrary, research has clearly shown that these practices pose devastating health risks for LGBTQ young people such as depression, decreased self-esteem, substance abuse, homelessness, and even suicidal behavior. The harmful practice is condemned by every major medical and mental health organization, including the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and American Medical Association.

Connecticut, California, Nevada, New Jersey, the District of Columbia, Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, New York, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Washington all have laws or regulations protecting youth from this abusive practice. A growing number of municipalities have also passed similar protections, including cities and counties in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, Florida, New York, Arizona, and Wisconsin.

According to a recent report by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, an estimated 20,000 LGBTQ minors in states without protections will be subjected to conversion therapy by a licensed healthcare professional if state officials fail to act.

HRC has partnered with the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and state equality groups across the nation to pass state legislation ending conversion therapy. More information on the lies and dangers of efforts to change sexual orientation or gender identity can be found here.

The Perfect Key West Boys Weekend Has Only One Headquarters: Island House

The Perfect Key West Boys Weekend Has Only One Headquarters: Island House

Take a dip with old friends (and new) at Island House.

Look, we get it. Between work stress, the everyday onslaught of horrible headlines and the any day now mass exodus off Facebook, it’s tough to keep up with friends. Round up your buddies and plan an unforgettable getaway to one of our favorite destinations: Key West.

You may have raged in Vegas or taken a big bite of the Big Apple in NYC, but Key West offers gay travelers an utterly unique vacation spot that blends fun in the sun with the “One Human Family” ethos that’s made it a must-visit for the LGBT community.

Leave your inhibitions behind, and cut loose with these suggestions for you and your best buds.

There’s no better base of operations than Island House. The acclaimed all-male, clothing-optional resort is an idyllic getaway for any gay man. All shapes and sizes are welcome and celebrated, so worry not about dropping trou around the perfectly heated pool.

In fact, you could spend the bulk of your trip at the pool at Island House, and it would still be a worthwhile vacation spot. It’s the center of the social scene at the resort (and the rest of the island, really). Locals swing by for the daily happy hour, where guests drink free (yes, even top-shelf liquor). It’s the best way to get loosened up without blowing your budget. On Sunday afternoons, the weekly naked pool party pumps up the jams and naked shot boys pass around delicious drinks.

A glimpse of Island House’s Sunday pool party.

If you tire of lounging poolside, you can venture up to the sundeck to catch some rays, or take a dip in either the indoor or outdoor hot tubs. You and your buddies won’t have any trouble finding a good time around the property (though indulging in those carnal desires isn’t required to enjoy your stay). However, if the mood strikes you, there’s also a 24-hour video room (or, as it’s affectionately referred to around Island House the “library” or “cultural center”) to satisfy your needs.

When you need a break from the social scene, retreat to one of Island House’s comfortable rooms. Get your group together in the luxury two bedroom apartment and enjoy a full kitchen with island seating, a living room with leather sofa, a private porch and two separate bedrooms. It’s a great home base to come back to for a little bonding with old friends (and maybe a few new ones you pick up at the pool).

The scene at Island House’s 24-hour bar and café.

You won’t have to worry about going hungry at Island House either. We’ve already shared some of our favorite dishes in Key West, but you could eat like a king without ever leaving the property. The 24-hour café boasts some of the best food on the island, and you can order just by using your room number. (Chances are you won’t be wearing any pockets in which to stick a wallet.) However, the Key West institution Pepe’s is just a short walk away, and their breakfast specials are like delicious hangover antidotes.

Jessica Deveraux slaying the crowd at Aqua.

We all have that one friend that can’t go a whole vacation just relaxing, so luckily there’s plenty to see and do around the island as well. Keeping in the spirit of a boys weekend bender, head to a drag show at Aqua. The polished, professional queens put on one helluva show, so come packing plenty of singles.

Save some of those dollar bills for the boys at Bourbon Street Pub. The video bar has some of pop’s biggest hitmakers playing on several screens as go-go boys shake their stuff and get friendly on several bars.

No trip to Key West would be complete without a ride aboard the Blu Q, Key West’s longest-running all-gay charter. They specialize in all-male, clothing-optional excursions for an unforgettable day on the water sailing, snorkeling or paddle boarding.

By the end of the weekend you’ll leave with plenty of memories (and probably very few tan lines).

New Zealand’s parliament has unanimously passed legislation that would erase past criminal convictions for homosexuality.

AFP reports:

Homosexuality was decriminalized in New Zealand in 1986, but people who were convicted before then still had the offence listed on their official records…

…”I would like to apologize again to all the men and members of the rainbow community who have been affected by the prejudice, stigma and other negative effects caused by convictions for historical homosexual offenses,” Justice Minister Andrew Little said.

“This bill sends a clear signal that discrimination against gay people is no longer acceptable, and that we are committed to putting right wrongs from the past.”

The legislation will affect approximately 1,000 people who can seek to have records cleared.

EARLY RESULTS IN ANCHORAGE INDICATE VOTERS REJECTING ANTI-TRANSGENDER PROP 1: Mail-in voting on an effort to roll back the city’s critical anti-discrimination measure protecting transgender people ended yesterday. “We are encouraged by the results of the first 50,000 votes, representing a quarter of all of Anchorage registered voters, and are optimistic that this discriminatory proposition will be defeated as the remainder of mail-in ballots continue to be counted,” said HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse. “HRC was proud to work on the ground alongside our Fair Anchorage coalition partners, leading transgender advocates, and Equality Voters across Anchorage. We are also thankful for the significant faith and business leaders who have spoken out against this dangerous, anti-transgender ballot measure.” HRC served on the campaign board for Fair Anchorage, and had field staff working on the ground with the campaign to mobilize opposition to Proposition 1 and elevate transgender voices and stories in the fight. MORE GAY AND BI CHECHEN MEN REVEAL BRUTAL TREATMENT BY GOVERNMENT: Two more Chechens have broken their silence about experiencing torture at the hands of their government before managing to escape. Novaya Gazeta, a Russian independent media outlet, first broke the news a year ago that authorities in the Russian republic rounded up and detained in secret prisons more than 100 men suspected of being gay or bisexual. Chechen leaders have denied the accusations — going so far as to deny the very existence of LGBTQ people in Chechnya. However, there have been numerous verified reports of torture and the deaths of at least three and possibly as many as 20 men. More from senior reporter Brendan Cole (@brendanmarkcole) in Newsweek.

Introducing Loops – Now on Tinder

Introducing Loops – Now on Tinder
Introducing Loops – Now on Tinder

Can’t stop. Won’t stop.

It all started with the swipe—that fun, simple movement that changed the way people meet. Now we’ve got a whole new experience that’s really going to set your swipe game in motion: Tinder’s new two-second Loops, where you can take any video and create a loop from it.

Get ready for more matches.

That’s right, you get two seconds of looping video to show more personality, which is the best way to get more right swipes. You can be flirty, you can be fun, but no matter what, be you. And be quick about it, because everyone who’s anyone will be showing off their moves. (Let’s face it; still photography is so last November.)

How to decide what to do with those precious two seconds? Well, we have a saying here at Tinder: if you love it, loop it.

If you love roller skating let’s see you killing it in the rink—forward and back, forward and back. Pro tip: increase your video speed and you just went from slow skate to roller disco. (Right on.) If you love shooting hoops let’s see you slam-dunk it over and over again. Pro tip: start your Loop mid-air and your feet will never touch the ground. (You da real MVP.) And if you love cliff jumping let’s see you making that splash—one foot in, one foot out—like you can walk on water. (Talk about swipe right material.)

THIS IS HOW YOU LOOP IT:

You can upload an existing video and edit it within the Tinder app:
Introducing Loops – Now on Tinder

Worried that it’ll be tough to choose between your already perfect photos and adding new Loops? We have you covered: we’re also testing the ability to add nine photos or Loops in your profile instead of six. Go on, show off.

Loops is currently being tested on iOS devices in Canada and Sweden.

That’s all for now. Consider yourself looped in.

Swipe on!

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Stars Farrah Moan and Shea Coulee Attacked by UK Homophobe: VIDEO

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Stars Farrah Moan and Shea Coulee Attacked by UK Homophobe: VIDEO
farrah moan

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9 stars Farrah Moan and Shea Coulee were attacked in a kebab shop in Newcastle, UK on Sunday night.

A Snapchat video showing them interacting with a drunk customer who was taunting them with gay slurs began spreading on social media.

“Slut,” said the customer.

“Why are you so greasy?”, responded Farrah.

“Why are you so gay?”, asked the customer.

“Because I’m a motherf**king star and I’ve been on TV…We’re touring the whole world being gay. What are you doing? You’re living in Newcastle with your crusty-ass eyelashes.”

“You’re a walking STD!”, said the woman, touching Farrah.

“Don’t touch me!”, demanded Farrah.

Farrah later tweeted about the video after it began circulating: “so I didnt wanna bring attention to the negativity that happened to me and shea last night in Newcastle at a kebab shop but the vid is spreading. No need to apologize on behalf of the city- our show was amazing and theres homophobic twats all over the world. Love you guys! … Hahaha I didn’t maintain my classiness to well in the video… I was drunk as hell and some lil girl came up to Shea and I with her phone calling us faggots, walking stds cuz my hair was pink and I guess she was white girl wasted ”

so I didnt wanna bring attention to the negativity that happened to me and shea last night in Newcastle at a kebab shop but the vid is spreading. No need to apologize on behalf of the city- our show was amazing and theres homophobic twats all over the world. Love you guys!

? Farrah Moan (@farrahrized) April 3, 2018

The only reason I addressed it was because came home to find my inbox flooded and I didn’t want anyone getting wrongly accused. Also I got thousands of death threats after drag race so I think these homophobic ass holes will be fine lol let’s not sympathize w/ abusers

? Farrah Moan (@farrahrized) April 4, 2018

It was complete madness I’ve never used the word “greasy” so many times in my entire life

Shea Coulee later described the incident on stage, and said a “6’2″ glamazon named Stef” asked the taunter if she wanted to fight, and the taunter said “yes…you gonna f**kin’ hit me over some dumb fag” and Stef “throat-punched that bitch”:
