12 Times Donald Trump’s White House Insulted Britain In His First Year As President

12 Times Donald Trump’s White House Insulted Britain In His First Year As President
It seemed to start so well. Theresa May was the first foreign leader Donald Trump met as president, and their January meeting was so cosy it was defined by the moment they held hands as they walked down a set the stairs together.

By December though things had fallen apart and May was forced, not for the first time, to publicly condemn him.

On the first anniversary of Trump’s inauguration, Britons could be forgiven for losing count of all the times the President has offended the UK in just 12 months. Thankfully, we haven’t forgotten…

Theresa May was just flying home from Washington when Trump signed an executive order banning travel to the US by citizens of seven Muslim countries. As chaos reigned at airports around the world and world leaders condemned the president, the PM stayed silent.

The Foreign Office feared it could affect Britons born in any of the seven countries, such as Somali-born Olympian Sir Mo Farah or Iraqi-born Tory MP Nadhim Zahawi, who called the order “a sad day for the USA”.

Five days after the order was signed, May finally told the Commons: “This government is clear that that policy is wrong. We wouldn’t do it. We believe it is divisive and wrong.”

“Another beauty,” Trump said of the BBC when its reporter Jon Sopel rose to ask a question at a bizarre press conference in February. When Sopel responded the BBC was “free and fair”, Trump hit back: “Yeah, just like CNN.”

Given how much he hates the American broadcaster – he once tweeted a video of himself wrestling a CNN logo to the ground – that is about the worst insult the president could give to one of Britain’s premier cultural institutions.

Sopel joked he would get “another beauty” put on his business card and used the phrase as a promotional blurb on his book.

In March, Trump sent a series of tweets claiming Barack Obama ordered the wiretapping of Trump Tower.

As the bizarre comment was repeated over several days, White House press secretary Sean Spicer repeated a media commentator’s claim that British intelligence agency GCHQ was behind it.

In a rare public statement, the agency called the claim “utterly ridiculous”. May’s spokesman later said the US Government had undertaken not to repeat it.

March – Donald Trump Jr Condemns Sadiq Khan

Hostility to the mayor of London is something Donald Trump Jr has in common with his dad.

And like his dad, Trump Jr attacked Sadiq Khan this year by taking remarks the mayor made after a London terror attack out of context.

Khan urged Londoners to be vigilant after the Westminster attack, saying such events were “part and parcel of living in a big city”.

You have to be kidding me?!: Terror attacks are part of living in big city, says London Mayor Sadiq Khan t.co/uSm2pwRTjO
Trump Jr, who has been running his father’s business since the election, tweeted: “You have to be kidding me!?”

Labour MP Wes Streeting called Trump Jr a “disgrace” for the tweet.

June – Trump Says The London Bridge Attack Showed His Travel Ban Was Right – Before Anyone Knew What Was Going On

On the evening of June 3, news was breaking that a group of men had crashed a van into pedestrians and attacked people with knives, leaving eight people dead. Before the full picture was even close to emerging, Trump retweeted rightwing The Drudge Report’s claim that a van had “mowed down 20 people”.

Refocussing attention on himself, Trump then used the still-developing incident to promote his travel ban, which he was then fighting the courts to implement.

We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!
Whatever the United States can do to help out in London and the U. K., we will be there – WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!
June – Sadiq Khan Is Slammed By A Trump For Trying To Reassure People. Again.

Like father, like son. Donald Trump hit out at Sadiq Khan, who had sought to reassure Londoners about the increased police presence that followed the London Bridge attack – the second terror incident in the capital in 2017.

At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is “no reason to be alarmed!”
Khan actually said: “Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days. There’s no reason to be alarmed. One of the things the police and all of us need to do is ensure that we’re as safe as we possibly can be.

“I’m reassured that we are one of the safest global cities in the world, if not the safest global city, but we always evolve and review to make sure we’re as safe as we possibly can be.”

Trump Then Calls Khan ‘Pathetic’

Khan’s spokesperson said he was “too busy” to respond to Trump’s “ill-informed” tweet that “deliberately too his remarks out of context”.

Trump gracefully bowed out and said nothing.

Until the next day.

Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his “no reason to be alarmed” statement. MSM is working hard to sell it!
In response, Khan said he had “better and more important things to focus on” than Trump’s tweets.

September – Trump Talks About Parsons Green Like He Knew More Than He Did

First there were reports of an explosion, then a stampede at a Tube station that injured many people. As police hunted for suspects, after three attacks in the UK that year, the hours after the Parsons Green incident were an anxious time in London. It was a time for politicians to speak out to calm people’s nerves.

“Another attack in London by a loser terrorist,” Trump tweeted. “These are sick and demented people who were in the sights of Scotland Yard.”

Another attack in London by a loser terrorist. These are sick and demented people who were in the sights of Scotland Yard. Must be proactive!
“We don’t even know who the suspects are so it’s a bit difficult to say. It’s just speculation,” the Metropolitan Police said.

“I never think it’s helpful for anybody to speculate on an ongoing investigation,” Theresa May said.

“It’s never helpful to have speculation about an ongoing operation and I would include the president of the United States in that comment,” Home Secretary Amber Rudd said.

October – Trump Claims A Rise In Crime Is Down To ‘Radical Islamic Terror’

England and Wales saw a 13% rise in crime, official statistics showed in October. Rises in burglary and sexual offences had contributed to the increase. Any explanation of it had to acknowledge the complex issues behind crime recording.

Trump:

Just out report: “United Kingdom crime rises 13% annually amid spread of Radical Islamic terror.” Not good, we must keep America safe!
“It is appalling that we have reached the point where inflammatory and ignorant statements from the President of the United States are now seen as normal,” MP Yvette Cooper said amid the anger that followed.

Trump did not let go his claim that Britain is under threat from radical Islamists.

November – He Retweets A Far Right Islamophobe

Jayda Fransen, deputy leader of the fringe far right group Britain First, tweeted three videos about Muslims depicting them as dangerous, with commentary that was heavily debunked.

As the world reeled from the endorsement, the White House said he shared the Britain First tweets because “the threat is real”.

This time, May didn’t have to wait to be asked what she thought. “It is wrong for the president to have done this,” she said. She added Britain First “cause anxiety to law-abiding people.

“British people overwhelmingly reject the prejudiced rhetoric of the far-right which is the antithesis of the values that this country represents: decency, tolerance and respect.”

Trump Then Tells May To Mind Her Own Business

Sadiq Khan could have warned May what would come next. No one who criticises Trump in measured terms escapes his Twitter account.

“Don’t focus on me,” Trump said, suggesting instead she look at “Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom”.

“We are doing just fine!” said Trump with the nervous energy of someone who was clearly doing fine.

.@Theresa_May, don’t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine!

November 30, 2017
It was at this point that Trump truly waded into a debate he did not grasp.

Last week, Trump said he wouldn’t come to open the new US embassy in Nine Elms because it was “off location” and the move from the building in Grosvenor Square was a “bad deal”.

Reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for “peanuts,” only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars. Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!

January 12, 2018
So it definitely wasn’t the prospect of mass protests he is assured to face, whenever and however he came to the country.

The French rugby team has dropped center Mathieu Bastareaud (above) following a three-week suspension for using anti-gay slurs.

Sebastian Negri 2017 by Italian Rugby Federation (CC0 1.0)

Bastareaud was suspended for using anti-gay language during a recent Champions Cup match. Tournament organizers opened an investigation last Sunday after Toulon captain Bastareaud appeared to direct the slur at Italy forward Sebastian Negri (right).

Bastareaud called Negri a “f***ing faggot” in the final minute of the game

He was cited by match commissioner Dennis Jones under Law 9.12.

Following a disciplinary hearing in London on Wednesday, he apologized and received the three-week suspension, reports the NZ Herald.

On Wednesday, he was replaced in an initial 32-man squad by Jonathan Danty, just two hours after being selected by coach Jacques Brunel.

He will now sit out France’s opening Six Nations meeting with Ireland in Paris on February 3rd.

He will be free to play again the following day.

NoGroKo-Argument Nr. 2: Merkel muss weg.

The Most Difficult Part Of Your Fitness Journey Will Be Starting It

The Most Difficult Part Of Your Fitness Journey Will Be Starting It

My first run of the year was not unlike many runs that you – if you leave the house – will experience in your life.

Why? Because it nearly didn’t happen.

Knowing how good exercise makes me feel doesn’t stop me sabotaging my own good intentions.

It doesn’t stop the constant weather app checks. Are the clouds getting gloomier? It doesn’t stop the agonising decision of what to wear. Am I in too many layers? Cold enough for gloves? It doesn’t stop the general faffing. Is my watch/phone/iPod charged? And, it certainly doesn’t speed up the pre-exercise fuelling. Have I had enough water? Have I left a long enough gap after eating?

I’m constantly fighting the voice in my head saying, ‘you’ll have way more energy tomorrow’.

And I’ve been doing this for years.

So how do you get started and form a healthy habit when you haven’t yet experienced the extra spring in your step that comes when you shut that door behind you, get out there and give it a go.

How? By taking a few small steps…

 – Make a plan: Start each week by working out what is possible. Then block it out. There’s nothing worse than thinking you can fit in a 30-minute jog when you’re also supposed to be seeing the dentist, reading something for work and making lunch. Make it realistic and it’s more likely to happen, because you don’t have a built-in excuse.

– Celebrate your kit: This is not permission to run towards the nearest sports shop. This is permission to dig out the clothes that give you a reason to smile. If you actually want to wear exercise clothes, it’ll give you one more reason to get started.

– Start small: If your training ground is currently the living room, it’s best not to make your first attempt a hill run or a 10k, otherwise you’ll feel defeated before you’ve even got started. While it feels amazing to unleash your inner Mo Farah, it is important to remember you aren’t a top athlete (and if you are, this post isn’t going to do much for you). Set achievable milestones and you’ll surprise yourself with just how quickly you rack up the miles. And, whatever you do, don’t get excited and double your mileage. Your body will, at best, not thank you or, at worst, remind you who is really in control (I learned the hard way).

– Choose your path: Unless you’re committed to the treadmill (in which case your route is limited), pick a route that excites you, that gives you chance to savour the changing seasons and explore new details in your local area. I often run out of my way to hit to Thames path because I love the feeling that comes with being near water. Build in landmark moments along the way and exercise becomes sightseeing.

– Break it down: Whatever your distance, don’t rush to thinking about the home straight before you’ve even located your keys. I may have run 26.2 miles for my wedding, but I’ve never run a marathon. Just four 10ks (and an extra bit that’s not to be underestimated when your legs have checked out). Count lamp posts, head for that next tree. Making it home is a bonus.

– Find a friend: Knowing others are out exercising always keeps me going. My newly-formed #Milesbetter2018 group on Facebook (and Strava) is like carrying a group of virtual cheerleaders in my pocket. We’re all at different levels, nervous about moving forward. But, we all recognise we are stronger together. Join us – or build your own friendly community to help you stay on track. Public accountability is a wonderful thing.

– Reap those rewards: I should be saying here that exercise is reward enough. No chance! If incentives get those energy levels going, then use them. I once ran 30k just to get a Pret love bar. I appreciate this is extreme (the barista thought so), but it certainly did the trick, even if it did undo the hard work.

– Rest and be thankful: a rest is only a rest if you’ve done something to earn it (try a bath after a rainy day and you’ll see what I mean). We all need a chance to recover. But not too many chances. The key is habit formation. Then you won’t need to fight the voice in your head that says your time would be better spent eating jelly babies while cooking dinner.

The hardest part of your exercise journey won’t be making your first finish line. It will be taking the decision to just start.

I did make it out of my January 1st run. I did feel better. I took a photo of the view I wouldn’t have seen from the sofa. I took time to thank my legs for moving forward and my lungs for keeping up. And, I took a detour on my way home to the path where it all began.

When I first stepped onto that path, I couldn’t run the 109 steps it takes to get to the end. So I walked. Then I walk/jogged. Then I jogged/ran. Then I ran. Then I ran off the path to find a new route and new milestones.

Now, that path is my cool down at the end of a six-mile run – miles that are part of the 100+ miles I’ve done (cycling and running) in a fortnight.

That path is about progress. It reminds me how far I’ve come. And, when I need a boost, I return to it to remind myself how far I can go if I just keep moving.

I hope you find your path this year and, in so doing, find a little bit of yourself along the way.

Now, time to get going…

#AM_Equality Tipsheet: January 19, 2018

TRUMP-PENCE LAUNCHES UNNECESSARY “CONSCIENCE” DIVISION AT HHS: The so-called “Division of Conscience and Religious Freedom” could enable discrimination against LGBTQ people, women, and others. “LGBTQ people need the Department of Health and Human Services to enforce non-discrimination protections in federal health programs. The creation of an unnecessary new division that is likely to promote a license to discriminate diverts needed enforcement resources and encourages discrimination against LGBTQ people,” said Sarah Warbelow, HRC Legal Director. “Every American deserves access to quality health care, and that should not be determined by the personal opinions of individual medical providers or administrative staff.” More from HRC and The Washington Post.

  • Also, yesterday HHS released more than 12,000 comments on another Trump-Pence license to discriminate rule, released in October, in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by BuzzFeed.

ANTI-LGBTQ TRUMP APPOINTEE RESIGNS AFTER CNN REVEALS BIGOTED COMMENTS: CNN’s KFile reported that during a radio interview, Carl Higbie, chief of external affairs for the federal government’s volunteer service organization, made “racist, sexist, anti-Muslim and anti-LGBTQ comments.” See the report at CNN.

Good riddance to @CarlHigbie – but unfortunately, many more anti-LGBTQ appointees remain in the Trump-Pence administration. t.co/wBG5pcZmcl

— HumanRightsCampaign (@HRC) January 19, 2018

SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE ADVANCES TRUMP-PENCE ANTI-LGBTQ NOMINEES: “These nominees pose a threat to the rights and safety of LGBTQ people across the nation and should not be entrusted with these important positions,” said David Stacy, HRC Government Affairs Director Director. “The Senate should reject them.”

  • Eric Dreiband to head civil rights division of the Justice Department: Volunteered for  legal team defending the University of North Carolina from the DOJ’s  suit holding the university and other state entities accountable for the federally-prohibited discrimination mandated by HB2.
  • Kyle Duncan nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit: Represented the Gloucester (Va.) County School Board in its case against Gavin Grimm; fought against marriage equality and same-sex adoption.
  • Matthew Kacsmaryk nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas: Wrote op-eds and public comments that oppose same-sex marriage, legal class protections for gender identity and sexual orientation, and rights of transgender citizens.
  • Mark Norris to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee: Opposed the Obergefell marriage equality case; supported Tennessee’s lawsuit against the Obama era guidance extending Title IX rights to transgender students.

The committee voted to advance all four nominations. More from HRC.

HRC RELEASES HEARTBREAKING NEW VIDEO FEATURING DREAMER AND SEXUAL ASSAULT SURVIVOR: It was only after she received DACA that Yuridia, 22, was able to report her abuser to the police. HRC has repeatedly called on Congress to pass the DREAM Act now to protect young Dreamers like Yuridia, who identifies as queer. “It was not until I had DACA that I felt human enough to walk into a police station and report my abuser. And DACA allowed that — for a moment — to allow me to feel a little more deserving in this country,” she says. Watch it at NewNowNext.

MIKE PENCE HEADS TO EGYPT AMID BRUTAL ANTI-LGBTQ CRACKDOWN: In advance of Pence’s scheduled trip to meet with Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi,

HRC reiterated its call for the Trump administration to forcefully condemn the Egyptian government’s escalating, brutal anti-LGBTQ crackdown. “Unless Pence uses the opportunity to forcefully speak out against these human rights abuses, the U.S. risks emboldening the Egyptian government’s assault on LGBTQ people and Pence will — once again — reaffirm his position as one of the most anti-LGBTQ politicians in the U.S.,” said Ty Cobb, director of HRC Global. “This is a moment that demands moral leadership.” Pence’s own political career has been defined by anti-LGBTQ animus. More from HRC.

HRC ANNOUNCES JAZZ JENNINGS AMONG OTHER SPECIAL GUESTS AT TIME TO THRIVE: Jennings, a HRC Youth Ambassador and author of I Am Jazz, will be a special guest along with Raikes Foundation co-founder Tricia Raikes; Rhode Island Teacher of the Year Nikos Giannopoulos; non-binary advocate Jacob Tobia; and HRC HIV 360° Fellow Daniel Downer.
