Peter Avsenew

Peter Avsenew was sentenced to death on Friday for the 2010 murder of a gay couple in Wilton Manors, Florida and flipped off the victims’ families in court.

Stephen Adams and Kevin Powell (above) were shot dead inside their home. They had taken Avsenew in after he had posted what was described as a sexually suggestive ad on Craigslist.

“After what happened in that courtroom just now, I’m happy that he’s being put to the death penalty,” Missy Badget, whose brother was also murdered, said.

Jurors spent Thursday morning hearing closing arguments from the state and the accused, who decided to represent himself.

Avsenew’s remarks to the jury were brief. He told the jurors he has no regrets in life, he’s proud of every decision he’s made in his life and that no one knows what really happened that night.

The full 10 News report here.

The Sun Sentinel reports: “Avsenew began staying with Adams and Powell in late 2010 and, after gaining their confidence, killed them, stole their money, credit cards and car, went shopping for outdoor supplies and fled to North Florida, where his mother eventually turned him in, according to trial testimony and court records.”

Avsenew represented himself in court after firing his defense lawyers.

Einwanderungsgesetz.
Kleine Verbesserung beim Familiennachzug.

Celia Hammond Animal Trust Invaded By Hunt’s Hounds, Sussex Police Investigating After Cats Go Missing

Celia Hammond Animal Trust Invaded By Hunt’s Hounds, Sussex Police Investigating After Cats Go Missing
Police have launched an investigation after a hunt’s hounds chased a fox and deer through the grounds of an animal sanctuary, causing dozens of cats to “flee for their lives”.

The Celia Hammond Animal Trust is home to 130 rescued cats at its Greenacres Rehoming Centre and Sanctuary, near Hastings, in East Sussex.

Police announced on Friday they would be launching an investigation after a pack of “uncontrolled” dogs ran through its grounds, leading to 60 of its residents going missing.

The animal sanctuary said in a statement: “We posted on social media about a very frightening and traumatic incident that occurred on Tuesday… at 4pm at our sanctuary in East Sussex when a pack of uncontrolled fox hounds in full cry ran through the sanctuary in pursuit of a fox and a deer forcing our resident cats who live freely in the grounds to flee for their lives.”

The sanctuary said Tuesday’s events were “extremely traumatic for our resident animals” and “shocking and distressing” for staff and volunteers, who spent an hour and a half trying to “chase the large fox hounds back out of the sanctuary grounds”.

“We have lodged a complaint with the police and East Sussex and Romney Marsh Hunt and will be seeking legal advice on the way forward,” Celia Hammond Animal Sanctuary added.

As of Saturday morning, eight cats were still unaccounted for.

A spokesperson on behalf of East Sussex and Romney Marsh Hunt said the huntsmen “apologised to the owners right away for any inconvenience caused”.

An earlier statement released by Sussex Police this week said that circumstances surrounding the incident were being “reviewed” to establish whether any criminal offences had taken place.

The latest statement from Sussex Police said that Tuesday’s incident may have violated the Hunting Act.

The force issued the following statement on Friday in a series of tweets on social media:

“We are now investigating the incident at Celia Hammond Animal Trust, which potentially involves a number of complex areas of law, including dog legislation and the Hunting Act. If criminal offences are identified, we will move forward with a view to prosecution. “We will update when the investigating is complete. “Many have asked why no action was taken immediately by the officers who attended at the time. Much of the detail of the incident has only come to light since we assisted sanctuary staff remove the dogs from the land to reduce the impact on the affected animals as quickly as possible. “The sanctuary owner has provided more information and officers are in touch with her. “We have to focus on fact and the law, which we uphold, but do not make. “While we appreciate this is a very emotive subject, we would respectfully ask that you do not use other posts on our social media to make your points as this is having an impact on other important messages to keep people safe from threat and harm.”
In a statement to the Mirror Online, a spokesperson for the hunt added: “We can confirm that hounds met at Udimore, near Rye on January 9 and were legally trail-hunting throughout the day to comply with the Hunting Act 2004.

“Although nobody from the hunt witnessed hounds following anything other than their original trail, it is suspected that a few hounds might have deviated from their trail onto the scent of a live quarry which they followed into the wildlife sanctuary.”

HuffPost UK has contacted East Sussex and Romney Marsh Hunt for further comment.

Since the incident, thousands of pounds have been donated to the animal charity on its JustGiving page, with more than £6,000 being raised at the time of writing.

Last year, police launched an appeal for witnesses after a member of the East Sussex and Romney Marsh Hunt was caught on camera repeatedly whipping a hunt saboteur.

How Donald Trump’s ‘Extraordinary’ 24 Hours ‘Dragged The Presidency Into The Gutter’

How Donald Trump’s ‘Extraordinary’ 24 Hours ‘Dragged The Presidency Into The Gutter’

Friday was Martin Luther King Jr Day in the United States, so it was sadly ironic the country’s leader marked it by facing accusations he is a racist who is dragging the presidency and America’s moral standing “into the gutter”.

Donald Trump’s day so far:

– Yep he said “shithole”
– Sen. Dick Durbin confirms it
– “Trump is a racist” is trending
– U.S. Ambassador to Panama quits
– Trump doesn’t have a U.S. Ambassador to Haiti
– Vows to record WH meetings
– Worked out well for Nixon
– It’s still only 11am

— Palmer Report (@PalmerReport) January 12, 2018

Even among all the incredible events that have marked the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency, according to one expert in international relations, these 24 hours stand out as “extraordinary”, and could fundamentally change global politics – and America’s position in the world.

“I hesitate to say it couldn’t get any worse because you never know,” Dr Rod Abouharb, an international relations professor at University College London told HuffPost UK.

“This is another example of Donald Trump turning his back on the traditional role of US President as leader of the Free World.”

THE ‘SHITHOLE COUNTRIES’

Trump is no stranger to accusations of racism but his flippant comments allegedly made on Thursday and his subsequent reaction stand out.

The President was reportedly being informed of the impact of immigrants from Haiti and African nations during a meeting with lawmakers when he reportedly asked:

Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?

THE DENIAL

The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made – a big setback for DACA!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 12, 2018

Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said “take them out.” Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings – unfortunately, no trust!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 12, 2018

THE CONTRADICTIONS

Unfortunately for Trump, a number of sources had already tacitly acknowledged the language used, not least the White House itself.

Statement from @rajshah45 on WaPo “shithole” story, via @JaxAlemanypic.twitter.com/fY6yDTCeRZ

— Stefan Becket (@becket) January 11, 2018

Shortly after Trump’s denial, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, who was at the meeting, told reporters Trump used “vile, vulgar” language, including repeatedly using the word “shithole” when speaking about African countries.

I cannot believe that in the history of the White House, in that Oval Office, any president has ever spoken the words that I personally heard our president speak yesterday. President Trump said things that were hate-filled, vile, and racist. He used those words repeatedly. pic.twitter.com/6gHW5cLVvU

— Senator Dick Durbin (@SenatorDurbin) January 12, 2018

THE AWKWARD REPUBLICAN RESPONSE

While Durbin had no qualms about confirming what he said, Republican lawmakers who were also presently conveniently “could not recall” events despite them happening less than 24 hours before.

In regards to Sen. Durbin’s accusation, @SenTomCotton and I do not recall the President saying these comments specifically but what he did call out was the imbalance in our current immigration system, which does not protect American workers and our national interest. pic.twitter.com/yO2WF11Of3

— David Perdue (@sendavidperdue) January 12, 2018

Apparently, “do not recall” is the new ?‍♂️ t.co/vphJ20KAYy

— JackiSchechner (@JackiSchechner) January 12, 2018

THE SASSY DICTIONARY

The Merriam-Webster dictionary has not hidden its disdain for the current President, so it’s unlikely its choice for Friday’s word of the day was an accident.

Good morning! Today’s #WordOfTheDay is ‘reprehensible’ t.co/El0bYnVNaApic.twitter.com/9guWRJEkXO

— Merriam-Webster (@MerriamWebster) January 12, 2018

However, having already offended most of the developing world, it appeared Trump was only just getting started.

THE UK CONNECTION

Running parallel to the racism row was another which gave a heavy hint as to the repercussions Trump’s loose lips and preference for Twitter diplomacy can have outside America.

Back on this side of the Atlantic news was breaking that the president had cancelled a planned visit to open the US embassy in London in February amid fears protestors would mar the trip.

THE SECOND DENIAL AND THE FALSEHOODS

True to form, Trump gain disputed this version of events and listed his own reasons.

Reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for “peanuts,” only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars. Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 12, 2018

.. which were swiftly debunked.

  • The decision to move the embassy move predated Obama.
  • The US didn’t own the land the old embassy sits on.
  • It’s not as simple as the embassy being bought for “peanuts.”
  • The embassy’s current location is hardly, as Trump claimed, “the finest.”
  • The new embassy is hardly in an “off location.”

The US embassy in London itself later released an unprecedented tweet that was a thinly-veiled attack on Trump’s own assertions.

Amazing. The US Embassy has issued its own statement this evening apparently correcting the US President on the building costs. pic.twitter.com/Mif9WfYBxO

— Carl Dinnen (@carldinnen) January 12, 2018

Not that Brits were fooled anyway.

Nope it’s because nobody wanted you to come. And you got the message. t.co/9xV7bFZQgL

— Ed Miliband (@Ed_Miliband) January 12, 2018

Many Londoners have made it clear that Donald Trump is not welcome here while he is pursuing such a divisive agenda. It seems he’s finally got that message. This reinforces what a mistake it was for Theresa May to rush and extend an invitation of a state visit in the first place. pic.twitter.com/lNaQGx9iBw

— Mayor of London (@MayorofLondon) January 12, 2018

BORIS PARROTS TRUMP

Trump may be one-of-a-kind but we do have Boris Johnson, whose use of English is arguably almost as notorious.

The US is the biggest single investor in the UK – yet Khan & Corbyn seem determined to put this crucial relationship at risk. We will not allow US-UK relations to be endangered by some puffed up pompous popinjay in City Hall.

— Boris Johnson (@BorisJohnson) January 12, 2018

Johnson branded Sadiq Khan a “puffed up pompous popinjay” in response to the London Mayor welcoming Trump’s decision to stay home.

The Foreign Secretary used his own brand of Twitter diplomacy to launch an astonishing attack on his City Hall predecessor, just hours after Khan said Trump had “got the message” from that he isn’t welcome in London.

That forced Number 10 to issue its own clarification, claiming the Foreign Secretary was speaking in a political capacity.

When asked if the Prime Minister was concerned that Khan was damaging the ‘special relationship’, the Downing Street spokesman replied: “No, the US and the UK are natural, resilient and strong partners and allies and we do more together than any two countries in the world.

THE FALLOUT

Speaking on Channel 4 News on Friday evening, Ed Miliband said Trump had dragged the presidency “into the gutter”.

“America’s moral standing, as well as America’s political standing, is under severe (strain),” the former Labour leader said.

This was encapsulated in the response from Botswana’s Ministry of International Affairs, which formally asked the US to clarify if it is regarded as a “shithole country”.

Press Release of the Month. pic.twitter.com/ArMLwFW4Cs

— ian bremmer (@ianbremmer) January 12, 2018

But UCL’s Dr Abouharb told HuffPost UK that Trump’s behaviour was more damaging to America and its interests, than simply causing offence. The past 24 hours could fundamentally change global politics.

″[These type of comments] make it more difficult for him to form coalitions at places like the UN and to get allies and partners to cooperate on the most pressing issues at the moment.

“In terms of the Iran nuclear deal – if he was hoping to persuade any of the other countries on this, I think this type of behaviour just makes others even less willing to listen to him.

“And if he’s hoping to persuade other countries with the Paris climate change agreement or renegotiating the NAFTA [North American Free Trade Agreement] which is next on the list, I think the Canadians and the Mexicans will be even less willing to listen to his demands than they were before.”

President of Senegal: “I am shocked by the words of President Trump on Haiti and Africa. I reject them and condemn them vigorously. Africa and the black race deserves the respect and consideration of all.” pic.twitter.com/vRHa3axXoN

— NBC News (@NBCNews) January 12, 2018

It’s not how a president should speak. It’s not how a president should behave. Most of all, it’s not what a president should believe. We’re better than this.

— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) January 12, 2018

Even the United Nations, an organisation that rarely raises its voice, the reaction was swift and to the point.

“There is no other word one can use but ‘racist’,” UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said. “You cannot dismiss entire countries and continents as ‘shitholes’ whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome.”

Congressman John Lewis, a giant of the civil rights movement Dr Martin Luther King Jr fostered, said: “It’s frightening to have someone in the office of the president in 2018 speaking the way that he’s speaking.

″[His] words and his actions tend to speak like one who knows something about being a racist. It must in his DNA, in his makeup.”

THE FUTURE

Doubts about the cognitive ability of Trump to hold the most powerful office in the world are only intensifying after his bizarre outburst in the wake of Michael Wolff’s explosive insider account of the White House.

….to President of the United States (on my first try). I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius….and a very stable genius at that!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 6, 2018

A group of 27 prominent mental health professionals are already calling for Trump to undergo a mental evaluation and have published a series of essays titled “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump″.

In an article for Politico, lead author, Bandy Lee, said Trump’s “mental state presented a danger to the public” and they have a “duty to warn them”.

THE DIAGNOSIS

At the moment there isn’t one – not of Trump’s mental capacity, at least, although he did undergo a physical exam on Friday.

The results are to be briefed to the public on Tuesday, but according to a White House statement released last night Trump is “in excellent health”.

Andererseits werde Keuchhusten zunehmend besser erfasst.

Donald Trump Supporters Disrupt Sadiq Khan Speech At Fabian Society Conference
Donald Trump supporters have disrupted a speech by Sadiq Khan, after the London Mayor said the president wasn’t welcome in London.

Trump said he was cancelling a visit because he did not want to open the new US embassy but Khan said it because the president feared mass protests and had “got the message”.

As he was due to give a speech to the Fabian Society Conference in London about gender equality on Saturday morning, a group of protestors suddenly began disrupting the event.

Khan had just stood to speak when the group stood and heckled him, one holding up a US flag.

One member read from a statement, saying it was “peaceful, non-violent protest” but he was drowned out by calls from the moderator to leave and the audience

They shouted they wanted the mayor to be arrested.

The mayor sat as the moderator stood and tried negotiate with them to stop.

Drama at the #fab18 conference. Protesters arrive, deservedly booed, refuse to leave, and now some top lads have got their EU flags out to stage a counter-protest. Sadiq Khan and the rest looking a bit annoyed, which is understandable pic.twitter.com/1h1aErJwJg

The police were called and the demonstrators were removed to cheers and applause from the audience, having disrupted the event for around 15 minutes.

Having sat flicking through a newspaper, Khan then got back up to speak, calling the hecklers “very stable geniuses”.

The group told ITV News’ Paul Brand that they were called “White Pendadragon” and thought the Fabians were “subverting society”.

They denied being far right or racist, despite suggesting to Brand that Khan’s religion meant he could not be mayor.

They claim they are not a racist group, nor far right. But they told us Sadiq Khan has no right to be Mayor of London, referencing his religion.
After his speech, in which he warned the rise of populism threatened gender equality, Khan gave an interview for Left Foot Forward, in which he said it was for Trump to decide whether he wanted to visit.

Khan added: “The US has got a special relationship [with Britain]. Many of us love America…

“It’s important our prime minister works with the president but what I am not in favour of the invitation of a state visit being made so soon where the red carpet is rolled out.”

Trump had called the new US embassy “off location”. Khan said: “As a south Londoner, I take his comments about Nine Elms very personally.”

The latest excahnge follows a long war of words between Khan and Trump, who has repeatedly tweeted to attack the London Mayor.

Johnson attacked Khan over Trump’s cancelled visit, saying he was a “puffed up pompous popinjay”.

Johnson suggested in a tweet that Trump had been scared off by Khan and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Downing Street later clarified the foreign secretary was speaking in his capacity as a minister.
