John Oliver: ‘Is Trump Smart Enough to Be Evil?’ – WATCH
Paul Manafort John Oliver

On last night’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver caught up on the indictments of Paul Manafort and his business associate Rick Gates, and wonders how Trump could not have known what a shady character Manafort is.

Said Oliver:

“While Manafort may have been gone before the election, Gates, his partner, who prosecutors say had 55 bank accounts – he helped run the inaugural committee and has been a frequent visitor to the White House, so again, the question here is, did Trump know all of this and not care? Or, did he know none of it because he’s incompetent. In other words, is Trump smart enough to be evil?”

Watch the clip above.

Oliver later moved on to George Papadopoulos in the second half of the segment:

Swindon Bridal Boutique Commemorates Remembrance Sunday With Wedding Dress Made Entirely Of Poppies

Swindon Bridal Boutique Commemorates Remembrance Sunday With Wedding Dress Made Entirely Of Poppies

A Swindon Bridal boutique is showcasing a stunning wedding dress made of 250 handmade poppies in honour of Remembrance Sunday

Charlotte Boswell, the boutique’s sale consultant, created the striking dress for very personal reasons.

Her father served as a pilot in the RAF and her brothers are currently serving in the British army

It took Charlotte more than 14 hours to make the dress and five hours to present it in the shop’s window display.

“Last year we had a display with a military uniform and a cascade of poppies over an ivory wedding dress,”Boswell said.

“This year we wanted to do something a little bit different while still having a striking window display.”

The poppy dress has gone viral, as a post of it was shared almost 4,000 times on Facebook.

Bridal Boutique has been established in Swindon for 26 years and stocks designer dresses, but evidently likes to get creative too.

The team at Bridal Boutique told HuffPost UK: “We feel very proud and humbled to be able to honour all our armed forces serving and who have served in this creative, fun and poignant way.”

Next to the dress is a small plaque with a well-known saying: “Never was so much owed by so many to so few.”

The dress will be displayed until the 11th November.

HRC Endorses Julie Johnson for Texas State Representative

HRC Endorses Julie Johnson for Texas State Representative

Today, HRC announced its endorsement of Julie Johnson to represent House District 115 in the Texas House of Representatives.

“Julie Johnson is a champion for working families who will fight for every day Texans,” said HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof. “We proudly endorse her candidacy to represent Texas House District 115 and look forward to working with another strong, pro-equality voice in the Texas Legislature.”

“It’s time to choose what our Texas of tomorrow looks like. Will we go down the path of hate and waste or will we make sure that Texas is a place where businesses and all families can flourish?” said Julie Johnson. “This choice demands leaders who put the needs of our state above the needs of any party. We have invested too much time on issues that don’t truly matter to the people of Texas. That’s why I am running for HD-115. I am running to bring back common sense based on common values– to do what is right for my fellow Texans, and to ensure that the ability to write laws in a bipartisan manner is not lost in the Texas House of Representatives. I am pleased to be endorsed by the Human Rights campaign and look forward to working with them once elected.”

Johnson lives in Dallas, TX with her wife, Dr. Susan Moster and their two sons. A long time small business owner, she has spent her career serving the people of Texas and fighting for equality, fairness and justice. The choice between Johnson and incumbent State Rep. Matt Rinaldi could not be clearer. While Johnson will fight to ensure the equal treatment of every Texan, Rinaldi is a hard-right legislator who sponsored Texas’ failed anti-transgender bill last session and enjoys support from some the state’s most egregious anti-equality groups.

Pol. adv. paid for by Human Rights Campaign PAC and authorized by Julie Johnson for Texas.

British singer Harry Styles has been under fire in recent weeks for his failure to acknowledge a ‘Black Lives Matter’ flag at his London concert while regularly acknowledging the LGBTQ community.

Explained Clevver:

The 23-year-old is known for waving rainbow flags during his live shows to support the LGBTQ+ community, so fans have started bringing their own mini-flags to join in, too. At his London show yesterday, however, someone brought a BLM flag and threw it on stage and others held up little posters that read “BLACK LIVES MATTER” to hold up while he performed “SOTT.” While Hazza’s opening act, MUNA, saw the signs and held one up, Harry either did not notice the crowd project, or purposely chose to ignore it.

Styles later posted a photo of the crowd at his concert holding up Black Lives Matter signs to his Instagram, with the caption “Love”.

At his Stockholm concert last night he offered some additional words: “I love every single one of you. If you are black, if you are white. If you are gay, if you are straight, if you are transgender, I love every single one of you.”

Harry Styles is too good for this world ??

HRC PRESIDENT CHAD GRIFFIN STATEMENT ON MASS SHOOTING IN SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, TEXAS: “Our hearts go out to those impacted by this senseless tragedy today in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Whether in an LGBTQ club or a Texas church, gun violence is plaguing our country. Unless Congress acts, no community in America can be safe. Make no mistake about it, what happened in Sutherland Springs could have easily happened in any other town across America. The murder of innocent people across our country should move Congress to realize there is an overwhelming and indisputable need for action. It’s time for Congress to stand up to the NRA. We will continue to demand action until our lawmakers either hear us — or we have new lawmakers.” The tragedy, which left at least 26 people dead and at least 20 injured, comes just a few weeks after a mass shooting in Las Vegas that took  58 lives and injured more than 515. Last year, 49 people — most of them LGBTQ and Latinx — were killed at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Yet, in recent weeks, Congress and the White House have only discussed modest potential steps to address the scourge of gun violence facing the country. Prior to the Las Vegas shooting, Congress was even considering legislation to allow silencers and transportation of concealed weapons across state lines. Common-sense gun violence prevention measures endorsed by HRC include banning access to assault-style rifles, expanding background checks, and limiting the ability for suspected terrorists and those with a history of domestic abuse to access guns. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, more than 33,000 gun deaths happen every year. More from HRC and the Washington Blade.

Whether in an LGBTQ club or a church, gun violence of any kind should move Congress to act. W/ each day that passes, more people will die.

HRC PRESIDENT CALLS ON SECRETARY TILLERSON TO SPEAK OUT ON GLOBAL ANTI-LGBTQ ATTACKS: In a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin) addressed the growing attacks against the LGBTQ community around the world and called on Tillerson to speak out against the anti-LGBTQ human rights abuses occurring in Egypt, Chechnya, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Georgia, Tanzania, Azerbaijan, and Tajikistan. To date, neither President Trump nor Tillerson have publicly condemned the atrocities. Writes Griffin, “When you are silent, the perpetrators of this violence see America not as a moral leader — but as a government that will look the other way. In addition, we ask you to demonstrate America’s commitment to human rights by increasing U.S. funding for LGBTQ civil society groups around the world and making it clear to the American people, the international community and State Department staff that supporting and protecting the human rights of LGBTQ people remains a State Department commitment and priority.” More from HRC.

Harry Dreyfuss, Son of Richard Dreyfuss, Says Kevin Spacey Sexually Assaulted Him as a Teen

Harry Dreyfuss, Son of Richard Dreyfuss, Says Kevin Spacey Sexually Assaulted Him as a Teen
Harry Dreyfuss

Harry Dreyfuss, the son of actor/director Richard Dreyfuss, says that Kevin Spacey groped him when he was an 18-year-old senior in high school and his father was directing Spacey in a play at London’s Old Vic theatre.

Instagram Photo

Dreyfuss said that he has always passed the story off as a joke, but that the numerous others coming forward have allowed him to see the incident in its true light.

Writes Dreyfuss in a piece at Buzzfeed News:

As the allegations against Harvey Weinstein came rolling in, and so many women I know posted their stories of sexual abuse during the #MeToo campaign, I came to see how important it is to add my voice to the people who are demanding a better world. A world in which powerful men are no longer allowed to feel safe to do this, or far worse. In retrospect, what disgusts me about Kevin was how safe he did feel. He knew he could fondle me in a room with my father and that I wouldn’t say a word. He knew I wouldn’t have had the guts. And I didn’t.

Dreyfuss says that Spacey befriended him and made himself into a sort of “authority figure” before making his move and grabbing the teen’s crotch while his father was in the room with them, a move his father didn’t notice at the time.

Adds Dreyfuss:

First of all, on the scale of sexual abuse, I felt that what happened to me was relatively minor. It wasn’t until this year, when so many people have bravely come out with their stories, and the demand for a better world has gotten such broad support, that I saw my own story has value. What I see now is that when it comes to sexual abuse, there is no such thing as a “minor” assault. And if telling this story will help others speak up, then it is worth it. I also can’t stand that Kevin, in his apology, tried to distract from the real problem here by coming out, and in so doing managed to undermine all the work the LGBT community has done to do away with the association between pedophilia and homosexuality. The fact that he’s gay is not what’s important. Rather, it’s that he has no respect for consent. A lot of people have warned me this could hurt my career because it will make me look like I’m “jumping on the bandwagon.” But as long as the bandwagon is outing a sexual predator…then I’m good with that.

Buzzfeed adds:

On Wednesday, Spacey’s publicist released a statement that Spacey is seeking unspecified “evaluation and treatment.” When asked to comment on Dreyfuss’s story, Bryan Freedman, a lawyer representing Spacey, said, “Let me be clear, Mr. Spacey absolutely denies the allegations.”

Dreyfuss tweeted on Sunday:

Thanks to anyone who’s ever spoken out. I add my story in the hope predators learn there will always be consequences t.co/DezeSnr6Gj

— HarryDreyfuss (@harrydreyfuss) November 4, 2017

Support has been tremendous. Let’s extend this love to victims who don’t come from famous families, and make ALL abusers fear consequences

— HarryDreyfuss (@harrydreyfuss) November 5, 2017

As did his father:

I love my son @harrydreyfuss more than I could explain with all the words in the world. And I am so incredibly proud of him right now. t.co/iLOxTxPe4n

— Richard Dreyfuss (@RichardDreyfuss) November 5, 2017

Dreyfuss is just the latest of Spacey’s victims to speak out.

An allegation against Spacey by actor Anthony Rapp last week snowballed into an avalanche of similar allegations including filmmaker Tony Montana, who said that Spacey groped him in public in 2003, and the actor Roberto Cavazos.

That was followed by an as yet unnamed man who claimed Spacey raped him at 15, and 8 crew members on House of Cards who said they were harassed by Spacey as well as a London bartender who said Spacey flashed him and then tried to shut him up with an expensive watch.

Spacey was also dumped by his agency, CAA, and his publicist Polaris.

And Netflix cut its ties with the House of Cards actor.

Oxford Street Could Be Pedestrianised By December 2018, London Mayor Announces

Oxford Street Could Be Pedestrianised By December 2018, London Mayor Announces
Large parts of London’s Oxford Street could be pedestrianised by December 2018 under plans put forward by London Mayor Sadiq Khan to turn the strip into the “world’s best outdoor shopping experience”.

About half a mile of the street from Oxford Circus to Orchard Street could become a “traffic-free pedestrian boulevard”, the mayor said in unveiling plans on Monday that are being publicly consulted on until 17 December, 2017.

Khan said: “This is a hugely exciting moment for the capital. Oxford Street is world famous with millions of visitors every year, and in just over a year the iconic part of the street west of Oxford Circus could be transformed into a traffic-free pedestrian boulevard.

“Whether you’re a local resident, a business, or shop in some of the area’s famous stores, our plans will make the area substantially cleaner and safer for everyone, creating one of the finest public spaces in the world.”

Khan said he hoped the first stages of the “ambitions plans” would coincide with the arrival of the Elizabeth Line in central London.

This morning I’ve launched plans for an iconic part of Oxford Street to be transformed into a pedestrian boulevard. t.co/r96rZlFRJp pic.twitter.com/z409GRzCqE — Sadiq Khan (@SadiqKhan) November 6, 2017
Under the plans all east-west traffic will be stopped from the street (between Orchard Street and Oxford Circus) that attracts more than four million visits a week, but some north-south routes will be maintained.

The Mayor said new seating would be placed along the shopping strip to give people a chance to rest and “spend time enjoying the area” and the carriageway would be raised to be level with the existing pavements between Orchard Street and Oxford Circus during “this first stage, to make it more accessible for everyone”.

A new 800m-long work of public art could also be commissioned for the length of the former carriageway, acting as a centrepiece for the transformed street, the plans stated.

Cyclists would not be able to ride in the pedestrianised area, but Transport for London (TfL) and Westminster City Council is to consult, during Summer 2018, on “new high-quality cycle routes” along quieter roads to the north and south of Oxford Street.

In all, at least 25 new pedestrian crossings would be installed across the area, all of which will use energy-efficient LED lighting and have Pedestrian Countdown technology, the Mayor said, adding that traffic signals across the West End would also be altered and improved to manage any traffic impacts.

According to the plans, new and extended taxi ranks would be created close to Oxford Street to allow Black Cabs to continue to pick up and drop off customers. When combined with other taxi ranks being built and extended across the area, rank spaces will increase by 20 per cent by 2020, Khan said.

Taxis would also still be able to cross Oxford Street at Duke Street, Stratford Place, Vere Street and Harewood Place.

The Mayor’s office said that since summer 2016, TfL had been working to reduce the number of buses on Oxford Street by 40 per cent and the service would drop off further once with Elizabeth line was introduced.

Khan said along with the arrival of the Elizabeth Line, Oxford Street would be “truly transformed” over the coming years and pledged to work closely with residents, businesses and Westminster Council to ensure “plans are the very best they can be”.

He added authorities would invest in wider pavements, pedestrian crossings, more taxi ranks and further cycling infrastructure to “support everyone living and working in the wider area”.

Westminster City Council Deputy Leader Robert Davis encouraged people to take part in the consultation: “Protecting and improving the quality of life for residents in the surrounding area will be a key consideration, it’s crucial that everyone knows that we are listening and that they can help shape our plans.”

Jace Tyrrell, Chief Executive of New West End Company, welcomed the announcement:  “After years of campaigning, it’s excellent news finally to see commitment from our politicians to a game-changing transformation of Oxford Street. Removing the wall of red buses from Oxford Street will reduce congestion and improve air quality – improvements which must also be capitalised on across Regent Street, Bond Street and the wider West End.”

Xavier Brice, Chief Executive of walking and cycling charity, Sustrans, said the transformation will give Londoners “room to breathe in the heart of the city”.

“This is a crucial step forward in freeing up space for people, instead of metal boxes. Making this iconic destination free of traffic, free of exhaust fumes and open for all to enjoy is vital at a time when London is facing an air pollution crisis.”
