KATE WINSLET. On why she didn’t thank Harvey Weinstein in her Oscar acceptance speech: “For my whole career, Harvey Weinstein, whenever I’ve bumped into him, he’d grab my arm and say, ‘Don’t forget who gave you your first movie.’ Like I owe him everything. Then later, with The Reader, same thing. ‘I’m gonna get you that Oscar nomination, I’m gonna get you a win, I’m gonna win for you.’ But that’s how he operated. He was bullying and nasty.”

Sebastian GorkaSEBASTIAN GORKA. At the Values Voter Summit: “The Left has no idea how much more damage we can do to them as private citizens, as people unfettered by being part of the U.S. government. And as you can see, from the campaigning I did for Judge Moore, and Steve [Bannon] as well, we have begun! ”

JAPAN. TV network apologizes for comedy program mocking gay people: ‘The character called “Homo-oda Homo-o,” a name incorporating “homo” — a derogatory term in Japan for homosexual men — twice, proved popular in the 1980s in a show featuring the comedy duo act “Tunnels.” It made a comeback last month when Fuji Television Network Inc. aired a program marking the 30th anniversary of the show.’

HERITAGE FOUNDATION. LAS VEGAS. Elton John to end run at Colisseum

SEBASTIAN KURZ. Austrian election goes far right: “Austria became the latest European country to take a sharp turn right on Sunday, with the conservative People’s Party riding a hard-line position on immigration to victory in national elections and likely to form a government with a nationalist party that has long advocated for an even tougher stance.

Live turkeys thrown from plane in cruel tradition. “Animal-welfare activists have been trying to stop the 50-year tradition of the Yellville plane drops, which may have inspired a 1978 episode of the television show WKRP in Cincinnati in which turkeys were dropped from a helicopter as a Thanksgiving promotion.”

UK. Teacher banned after telling children “gay people have a disease.” ‘The 50-year-old science and careers teacher told the class homosexuals were ‘diseased’, ‘have something wrong upstairs’ and were ‘sick in the head’.  The pupils are taught at the pupil referral unit because they are unable to attend mainstream schools and many of them suffer with emotional and mental health issues.’

Obama Chooses Gay Portraitist Kehinde Wiley to Paint Official Presidential Portrait for Smithsonian

Obama Chooses Gay Portraitist Kehinde Wiley to Paint Official Presidential Portrait for Smithsonian

Kehinde Wiley, a gay portraitist known for his paintings of African-American celebrities, particularly hip-hop musicians, will paint President Obama’s official portrait for the Smithsonian, the L.A. Times reports:

Wiley, a Los Angeles native, is world-renowned for his portraits of young black men adorned in the latest in hip-hop street style. The artist has painted portraits of influential hip-hop figures such as the Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Ice T, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Michael Jackson, among others.

At the end of each presidency, the National Portrait Gallery partners with the White House to commission one official portrait each of the president and the first lady. The two sets of official portraits (one for the White House and one for the National Portrait Gallery) are financed through private funds and have been a tradition beginning with former President George H.W. Bush.

Georgia native Amy Sherald will paint former First Lady Michelle Obama. The two paintings will be unveiled at the museum in early 2018 and will be added to the National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection.

About Spirit Day

Each year, millions go purple for GLAAD’s Spirit Day to support LGBTQ youth in a united stand against bullying. Started in 2010 by high school student Brittany McMillan in response to numerous young LGBTQ lives lost to suicide, Spirit Day now draws the participation of celebrities, schools, faith institutions, national landmarks, corporations, media outlets, sports leagues, and advocates around the world, all joining together to stand against bullying and support LGBTQ youth.

As anti-LGBTQ policies, hate crimes, and harassment are on the rise, it is now especially important to let all marginalized youth know they are supported.

This year, Spirit Day is on October 19, 2017. Take the Spirit Day pledge to show LGBTQ youth you’ve got their backs at glaad.org/spiritday. Follow @GLAAD on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr to keep up to date with #SpiritDay news.
