The meth-for-orgy sting operation that brought this former mayor down

Richard “Scott” Silverthorne, the former Democratic mayor of Fairfax City, Virginia, pleaded guilty to one count of distributing drugs this week, the Washington Post reports.

50-year-old Silverthorne’s legal troubles began last summer when he was arrested and charged for felony distribution of meth, as well as misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, following a sting operation in a hotel parking lot.

According to police, after receiving an anonymous tip, detectives connected with Silverthorne through the gay dating website Bare Back Real Time last July. During their exchanges, the mayor promised “a group sexual encounter” with the men in exchange for hard drugs.

Two undercover officers met Silverthorne in a Crowne Plaza Hotel parking lot last August. After Silverthorne accepted about two grams of meth valued at $200, the cops whipped out their badges and arrested him. As a result, he was forced to resign as mayor and he had to give up his job as a substitute teacher.

According to the Washington Post, now that he’s pled guilty, Silverthorne faces up to 40 years in prison; however, because he is a first-time offender with a long record of public service, but his lawyers believe his sentence will likely be less than two years.

“The facts were such that it would have been futile to go to trial,” Silverthorne’s attorney, Brian Drummond, said after the hearing. “The statute for distribution in Virginia is very broad, and he is at the lower end of the spectrum. He is guilty of the transaction, but he didn’t get any money for it.”

This is likely a “you get the hotel room, I’ll bring the stuff” situation, which many feel is a gross overreach of the justice system.

The judge ordered Silverthorne to be held in custody until his sentencing on June 9.

Gay Couple Separated by Trump’s Travel Ban : WATCH

Paul Harrison HRC

The Human Rights Campaign has highlighted the plight of a gay couple who are engaged to be married but whose plans are on hold while the Trump administration’s travel ban takes effect.

Paul Harrison is a Texas man who since 2015 has been in a long-distance relationship with an Iranian man, whose identity must be concealed due to Iran’s draconian laws outlawing homosexuality. Their romance has played out largely in neighboring Turkey, which, despite a worsening climate for LGBT individuals, still remains more open than Iran.

Harrison’s fiancé had been slated to join him over the next few months, but Iran is one of six Muslim-majority nations whose citizens have been arbitrarily barred from entering the United States for at least 90 days, in a reissued ban following an earlier chaotic and poorly-conceived executive order blocked by the courts. While the latest order attempts to be more streamlined, drops an explicit religious test and excludes Iraqi allies, its fate in the judicial system remains to be seen. The ban comes into force March 16.

“Initially I became sick to my stomach. The nausea passed and I became angry and defiant. My fiancé was just in disbelief and denial that this could be happening,” Harrison remembered. “The 2.0 version of the ban still makes me feel very uneasy. I feel that Muslims are being targeted in general, and Iranians in particular.

He asks me every day, ‘Is my visa going to be okay?’ We’re racing against time, but at the same time we can’t really race. I just want him here and I just want to keep him safe.”

Harrison is now overseas working to help secure a visa for his fiancé. Given the implicit bias against the six banned countries, it is unclear whether their efforts will be successful. It is also not yet certain to what extent federal agencies will go to facilitate same-sex unions under this administration, especially since it has entertained anti-LGBT draft executive orders already, while the Departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are focused on kicking people out rather than letting people in.

Pro wrestler comes out as bi after posting adorable video with his super cute boyfriend

When professional wrestler Anthony Bowens posted a video of himself goofing off with his boyfriend, Michael Pavano, he didn’t think too much of it.

“It was this past fall and I was three months into a relationship with my boyfriend, Michael Pavano. Mike and I had uploaded a video to YouTube on his channel called ‘The Laughing Challenge,’ where he described me as his boyfriend,” 26-year-old Bowens explains in an op-ed published by OutSports

“The video was a blast to do, but I worried that someone from the wrestling world would stumble across it and learn my secret. I decided to let it be posted anyway.”

It wasn’t until weeks after the video had been online that his received a text message from one of his wrestling buddies.

“Bro, why didn’t you tell me?” the text read.

“Much to my great relief, he told me he didn’t care and that I was one of his best friends in the business,” Bowens says.

In January, Bowens decided to make the announcement “official” on Facebook:

“After hitting send, I immediately turned off my phone. I didn’t want to think about what people would write. After about 30 minutes I told Mike to check his phone,” Bowens recalls. “He had the biggest smile on his face, our friends in the room cheered, and I made the decision to turn on my phone. The response was overwhelming positive.”

Since then, Bowens hasn’t been shy about sharing his relationship for the world to see on social media:

I’d like to introduce you to my better half @michaelpavano. Give him a #follow, he’s kinda cool haha

Bowens concludes by writing:

I can’t even begin to tell you how many people I’ve spoken to over the years who are hiding and suppressing themselves out of fear of being judged. If I can help inspire at least one person to fight past their struggles through my journey or inspire at least one person to live their dreams, it’s all worth it for me. The journey and the fight is just beginning!

‘Real O’Neals’ Finale, Rupert Grint Gets ‘Snatch’d and More TV This Week

‘Real O’Neals’ Finale, Rupert Grint Gets ‘Snatch’d and More TV This Week

NOAH GALVIN

Check out our weekly guide to TV this week, and make sure you’re catching the big premieres, crucial episodes and the stuff you won’t admit you watch when no one’s looking.

We still don’t know if ABC’s The Real O’Neals will return for a third season, so Tuesday’s season two finale may be its swan song. Tune in at 9:30 p.m. Eastern to see if Vice Principal Murray pops the question to O’Neals’ matriarch Eileen (Martha Plimpton).

It’s season two for Hap and Leonard, Sundance’s GLAAD Media Award-nominated drama Wednesday at 10 p.m. Eastern. Michael K. Williams plays a gay Vietnam vet (he also played a gay Vietnam vet in When We Rise) caught up in murder, mystery and the law in this “swamp noir” set in the 1980s.

Guy Ritchie’s hustler action-flick Snatch gets the TV series treatment premiering Thursday on Crackle. In lieu of Brad Pitt, Vinnie Jones and Jason Statham, we’ve got young hunks Lucien Laviscount, Luke Pasqualino and Ed Westwick, along with Harry Potter’s Rupert Grint.

Unless you’ve got a pre-schooler at home, you probably won’t be tuning in for Julie’s Greenroom, debuting Friday on Netflix, but the Jim Henson Company-produced kids’ show features a slew of gay icons. In addition to host Julie Andrews, expect appearances from Idina Menzel, Chris Colfer, Tituss Burgess and many more.

You might know Finn Jones best for his portrayal of gay knight Loras Tyrell on Game of Thrones, but now he’s taking the lead in Marvel’s Iron Fist, bowing Friday on Netflix. The martial arts master is the final Defender to join the fray, joining the likes of Daredevil, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones.

What are you watching on TV this week?

Trump microwave

Seth Meyers returned to The Late Show last night and proceeded to rip apart the last week in Trumpland, specifically Kellyanne Conway’s claims that the president might have been surveilled through his microwave.

Said Meyers:

“If Trump had a camera in his microwave, that must have been a very distressing feed to watch.”

Meyers then explored Trump’s lack of a plan to replace Obamacare with something remotely workable, noting that he invited members of Congress to the White House for pizza and bowling in order to convince them.

“That’s right, Trump is trying to sway members of Congress with an 8-year-old’s birthday party. Also good news, Steve Bannon has agreed to be a terrifying clown.”

He then looked at the ridiculous Republican behavior around the bill.

The Week reports:

The bill faces stiff resistance, but it has already passed through two of three committees — before the brutal CBO score on Monday showed the plan reducing the number of insured by 24 million people. Meyers showed some of the wackier moments of the overnight committee hearings, including the discussion of taxing the sun. “Yeah, why don’t they tax the sun?” Meyers asked. “Is it because we already know that an orange ball of gas would never pay its taxes?”

“Even Donald Trump won’t put his name on this thing, and one reason for that might be that he’s worried people won’t like it as much as ObamaCare,” Meyers said. “In fact, today, Trump blamed the media for ObamaCare’s rise in popularity in the polls,” and for Obama’s rise in popularity, too. “I love how Donald Trump can’t figure out why Obama is suddenly so popular,” he concluded. “It’s you, dude. It’s you.”
