Stephen Colbert is ready for the final contest in the Hungry for Power Games.

The late night host is in Cleveland, Ohio for the Republican National Convention and on Sunday, he stormed the RNC stage to gavel in the end to the Republican contest in a fashion befitting this unconventional election.

Colbert has repeatedly mocked the 2016 race in segments where he likens the election to the Hunger Games. In those segments, Colbert plays the role of Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci), the outlandish announcer who covers the games.

Colbert was dressed as Flickerman when he stormed the RNC stage over the weekend and declared,”[Donald Trump] has formed an alliance with Indiana Governor Mike Pence.” Colbert then appeared to doze off at the mention of Pence. “Sorry, I blacked out there for a moment,” he quipped. He then grabbed the gavel on stage and declared, “it is my honor to hereby launch and begin the 2016 Republican National Hungry for Power Games!”

As a security guard approached him to get him off the stage Colbert said, “Look, I know I’m not supposed to be here. But let’s be honest, neither is Donald Trump.”

GLAAD finishes #SouthernStories tour with LGBTQ-affirming riverside baptism, church service

GLAAD finishes #SouthernStories tour with LGBTQ-affirming riverside baptism, church service

GLAAD finished the Alabama and Mississippi leg of its 2016 Southern Stories Summer Tour with Joshua Generation Metropolitan Community Church (JGMCC) over the weekend. GLAAD’s Director of Programs – U.S. South & Global, Ross Murray, as well Alexandra Bolles, GLAAD’s Senior Programs Strategist – U.S. South & Global, were on the trip.

Joshua Generation MCC is a radically affirming and inclusive church that welcomes anyone regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity or social status.

JGMCC held its first baptism on Saturday in Little Black Creek in Mississippi. The service began with the church’s choir, known as the Praise Team, singing songs like Amazing Grace. 22 people were individually baptized as the church community sang Down To The River To Pray. The baptisms were followed by a cookout, flag football, and everyone enjoying each other’s company. GLAAD spoke to several church members about their stories and experiences of being LGBTQ in the Hospitality State.

On Sunday morning, Ross, who is also a deaconal minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church preached at Joshua Generation MCC. In his sermon, Ross spoke to the congregation, which typically sees around 80 parishioners each week, about recent tragic killings all around the world, affirming that God loves everyone, and encourage everyone to show that love to others.

You can watch part one and part two of the service in full online.

The church’s pastor and founder, Brandiilyne Dear has been a leader in LGBT advocacy in Mississippi, both in the religious community and beyond. She is also the founder of the Dandelion Project.

GLAAD visited Jacksonville, Florida last month, and in the past week, visited Birmingham, Alabama as well as Jackson, Long Beach, and Hattiesburg in Mississippi. GLAAD met with LGBT community members and leading advocates across these cities and worked to amplify their voices in order to accelerate LGBT acceptance across the U.S. South. In partnership with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Rainbow Center, GLAAD hosted a community dinner and town hall discussion about the state of being LGBT in Southern Mississippi. You can see pictures from the event here.

gop gay marriageGOP CONVENTION. Police union asks for suspension of “open carry” in wake of recent violence: “We are sending a letter to Gov. Kasich requesting assistance from him. He could very easily do some kind of executive order or something — I don’t care if it’s constitutional or not at this point,” Stephen Loomis, president of Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, told CNN. “They can fight about it after the RNC or they can lift it after the RNC, but I want him to absolutely outlaw open-carry in Cuyahoga County until this RNC is over.”

GOP CONVENTION. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s rabbi pulls out. “Rabbi Haskel Lookstein, who heads the congregation that Mr. Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, attend, told friends and congregants in an email on Friday that he had decided to back out because his appearance had become too politically charged. Faced with a backlash after the Trump campaign released his name on a list of speakers — without specifying that he would deliver an invocation and not a speech — the rabbi said he had little choice.”

jeb bushJEB BUSH. Trump does not represent our future or the GOP: “Eight years of the divisive tactics of President Obama and his allies have undermined Americans’ faith in politics and government to accomplish anything constructive. The president has wielded his power — while often exceeding his authority — to punish his opponents, legislate from the White House and turn agency rulemaking into a weapon for liberal dogma. In turn, a few in the Republican Party responded by trying to out-polarize the president, making us seem anti-immigrant, anti-women, anti-science, anti-gay, anti-worker and anti-common-sense.”

ERIC FANNING. Army Secretary was grand marshal at San Diego Pride Parade. “Today, when our critics say that the military is not a place for social experimentation, they may be right. But equality and inclusivity are not experiments. They are American values,” he said during the Spirit of Stonewall rally, which honored gay New Yorkers who fought police harassment in 1969.

Said Folk’s Tweet: “You should be tried for treason, murder, and crimes against the US Constitution… then hung on the Mall in Washington, DC.”

Folk said he posted the tweet with regard to the FBI’s decision not to charge Clinton over her private email server.

Folk has since deleted the tweet and called it “hyperbole.”

Bloomberg reports:

“This pilot has been removed from flying pending our investigation,” United Continental Holdings Inc. tweeted Sunday. “We are appalled by his threatening comments.” …

Reached on his mobile phone, Folk declined to comment…

Folk began flying with United in 2008, according to his profile on LinkedIn. He is the vice chair of four committees in the West Virginia House of Delegates, including the Judiciary and Political Subdivisions. In a separate tweet, United said comments advocating harm to anyone don’t represent the company.
The West Virginia Democratic Party and other groups have called for Folk’s resignation.

Trump Spokesman: Peter Thiel Won’t Be Talking About Gay Stuff at the GOP Convention

Trump Spokesman: Peter Thiel Won’t Be Talking About Gay Stuff at the GOP Convention

thiel

Despite the fact that he’s just the third openly gay speaker to appear at a Republican National Convention, out Paypal billionaire Peter Thiel won’t be talking about his sexual orientation, says Trump’s convention manager, Paul Manafort:

“He’ll be talking about Donald Trump the man he knows and as a successful entrepreneur,” Manafort said.

“People are going to be speaking at this convention based on what they want to say, not on any particular sexual preference or things like that, so I don’t think that’s the basis for why he’s on the program,” he added.

JOIN US TONIGHT: Republican Convention 2016 — LIVEBLOG on Towleroad

Republican Party Chair Reince Priebus told the AP in an interview on Friday that Paypal billionaire Peter Thiel, who is openly gay, is “welcome” in the Republican Party though the platform is staunchly anti-gay:

“We’re still a party that believes that marriage is between one man and one woman, but it doesn’t mean that we’re going to kick people out,” he said, describing opposition to gay marriage as “one of the bedrock issues of our party.”

“I can’t win this race if I tell people that they’re not welcome in our party,” Priebus said when asked about Thiel. “He’s been a good help to our party and many candidates across the country. He’s a good Republican. He’s welcome in our party. Period.”
