To Anyone Who Thinks The Wage Gap Is A Myth
If you’ve been following me for at least the past 5 weeks, you may have noticed that I’m a newb to the fight for gender equality. I still have a great deal to learn and I look forward to doing so in order to help support the cause in the best way that I can. I am by no means an expert in the topic, but I do believe that with a strong sense of ethics, morality and empathy, one should have most of the traits necessary to understand and want gender equality. And ALL equality, for that matter.

In defining my passion for gender equity, it feels so powerful to expose my own blind spots about gender inequality and to feel so strongly about a cause. When I think and read about these issues and see your comments of support, it fires me up so hard I just want to kick myself in the nuts. But that would help no one.

And sometimes, I read comments that make me want to kick OTHER people in THEIR genitals. Oftentimes, because they’re missing big points and focusing on irrelevant details in hopes that it’ll support their opposing viewpoints. And frankly, it could be a futile effort to try and address these concerns because they probably mostly come from those people that are stuck in their own ways regardless.

I don’t know that this will be helpful for those who would post “Howw yew a femist if yew gota dick idiot!!?” But I feel compelled. Maybe it’s for the person that’s a bit ambivalent, or that doesn’t really understand the issues. Or maybe even as an “I got your back” to those who are already on board. Regardless, I feel compelled.

Instead of the genital jump kicks, I’ll try to offer some thoughts instead. Tuesday was National Equal Pay Day and in looking through my post and other people’s about it, I’ve seen some folks arguing that “women making 78 cents to a man’s dollar is an outdated fact/false statistic/other irrelevant comment.”

Let’s be honest. We all KNOW that women make less than men (and minority women make even less than white women). In an imaginary world, even if the 78 cent statistic wasn’t completely accurate, we still KNOW that there’s a disparity. And disputing the *numbers* is akin to me telling you, “my neighbor takes down his pants and shits in my front yard every day.” And you telling me, “actually, he doesn’t sh*t in your yard on the weekends or National Holidays.” The dude is still sh*tting in my mother-f**king yard. And if I went and sh*t on your garden gnome, I bet you’d get it.

And then there’s any number of other arguments including that men are doing more work, getting higher levels of education in higher paying fields, don’t take off for maternity leave, are generally more aggressive in their careers, or any number of other things that people might say to justify the wage gap. The problem with that is that in an enormous amount of cases, women are less likely to be given an equal shot at their careers as men are.

And it doesn’t take statistics to prove this; young girls who show “executive leadership skills” are more likely to be chastised for this and called “bossy” than boys are. This starts very young and certainly doesn’t help their chances of wanting to pursue leadership positions or be a strong force in the classroom (and later, in the workforce). The U.S.’s paid maternity leave policies are potentially the least helpful of any other developed nation, which does not help mothers #leanin to their careers. And with such small numbers of states and companies supporting paternity leave, it sure makes it hard for fathers to stay at home with their child and allow the mother to focus on her career if thats the path they choose.

Now I’m not saying that women shouldn’t take time off from working to be with their newborns or that they shouldn’t even be full time stay-at-home moms if they want to. What I’m saying is that we need to give women an equal *chance*, from the start of their lives, to pursue their careers aggressively and without hesitation.

By limiting girls and women with our own ignorant misconceptions, we are preventing them from having the greatest possible chance to succeed in their careers (and in life generally). This makes it less of a choice for women to pursue their careers and more of a societal, coercing “HINT HINT”ing that they shouldn’t.

I don’t believe that the wage gap in the U.S. is a result of a bunch of evil managers trying to screw women out of their full earnings, but I believe that it’s a product of a society that doesn’t give them a full shot and that often discourages them from even attempting a bold career path. We need to create a society where girls and women are getting the same encouragement and support to build their careers as the boys and men are. From the start.

That’s just my #78cents.

Catholics Call for Pope Francis to Oust Anti-Gay SF Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone in Full Page Ad

Catholics Call for Pope Francis to Oust Anti-Gay SF Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone in Full Page Ad

Cordileone

SF Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone has a long and continuing history of demonizing gays.

In February, we reported on a new “purity test” he had instituted for Catholic schools which threatened termination for teachers who give any statement that contradicts church doctrine, including holding a position that homosexuality is anything other than “gravely evil.”

Cordileone’s new rules even applied to sharing photos and personal opinions on social media sites like Facebook. For instance, if a teacher posted photos on Facebook of a gay son’s wedding, that would be cause for review.

Vigils have been held against the evil archbishop.

But Cordileone’s crusade against gays goes back much further.

He attended the National Organization for Marriage’s hate march with Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee because, he said “love is the answer”. He spoke out against marriage equality when it began to pass in several states, calling it a “serious injustice” and warned Catholics against attending same-sex weddings.

And perhaps worst of all, Cordileone was also a central strategist in the campaign to pass Proposition 8 in California.

Cordileone_adAnd he’s been arrested for driving drunk.

Now, more than 100 prominent Roman Catholic donors and church members are calling for Pope Francis to replace Cordileone, the SF Chronicle reports:

In their open letter to the pope, Cordileone’s critics say his morality-clause push is mean-spirited and “sets a pastoral tone that is closer to persecution than evangelization.”

The ad drew swift condemnation from the archdiocese, which said those who signed it don’t speak for San Francisco’s Catholic community.

The list of signatories includes Brian Cahill, the retired executive director of Catholic Charities, former city commissioner and Boudin Bakery executive Lou Giraudo, retired Swinerton Builders Chairman David Grubb, businessman and former political consultant Clint Reilly and his wife, Janet, San Francisco attorney Michael Kelly, and Charles Geschke, chairman of Adobe Systems and former head of the University of San Francisco Board of Trustees. Also on the list is Tom Brady Sr., father of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

The letter accuses Cordileone of marginalizing women in the church, disregarding advice from fellow priests in favor of outside advisers, having a “single-issue agenda” against gay marriage, going in an opposite direction from the Pope, causing discord with youth, and much more.

Still, Cordileone wants to attend this year’s NOM hate march again.

With all luck, he’ll be out of San Francisco before that.

The Bad News Just Keeps Coming For Aaron Schock As His Legal Troubles (And Bills) Grow

The Bad News Just Keeps Coming For Aaron Schock As His Legal Troubles (And Bills) Grow

aaron-schock-abs-360x443Aaron Schock, America’s favorite absolutely-not-at-all-gay former Congressman and Instagram addict, has only been out of his Downton Abbey-inspired office a few weeks, but he’s already the political equivalent of a dead man walking. Schock’s problems continue to mount as he faces new legal problems. If Schock thought that resigning from office would solve his problems, he couldn’t have been more wrong than if he decided to follow diver Tom Daley to establish his heterosexual cred.

Oops.

In the past few days, five new major headaches emerged from the ab-conscious Schock.

1. His former staff have been summoned to testify to a grand jury about Schock’s profligate spending habits. Four former staffers have been subpoenaed to tell the grand jury what they know. When the choice comes down to saving their skin or saving their former boss, whom do you think the quartet will protect?

2. He’s being sued by a donor for fraud. Howard Foster, a Chicago lawyer, donated $500 to Schock’s campaign in 2012. Foster has now filed a lawsuit against Schock, alleging that Schock “willingly followed well-tread paths of political sleaze for personal gain.” Foster’s lawsuit says that Schock violated the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corruptions Act (RICO), which is more often used against mobsters than Congressmen.

3. He’s run up more than $300,000 in legal bills. The latest report from Schock’s now defunct campaign fund shows a tab for $313,919 owed to the law firm of Jones Day. That’s just one of several firms that Schock has engaged for his legal defense.

4. He was spending like crazy right up until the end. The same campaign report shows that Schock was dropping big bucks for luxury items almost to the end of his tenure. On the principle that he was entitled to the finest that his donors could buy, Schock spent $4,000 at a luxury hotel in Europe, more than $3,000 for gifts at Tiffany’s and more than $42,000 in travel expenses.

5. He’s being billed for the special election his resignation necessitated. To add insult to injury, the Marshall County, IL, board is asking Schock for $76,000 to cover the cost of a special election to fill Schock’s vacancy. The board insists it doesn’t have that kind of money on hand. In reality, it’s a sign of how little it has to fear from Schock.

At this point, people can’t distance themselves far enough away from Schock. He has the stench of indictment about him, whether it comes to pass or not. It’s pretty clear that there’s still worse to come. Schock’s learning that if you want a friend in politics, buy a dog. Of course, if he had, you know it would have been a designer breed.
