Rock Hudson’s ‘True Love’ Reveals Intimate Details Of Their Secret Romance

Rock Hudson’s ‘True Love’ Reveals Intimate Details Of Their Secret Romance

rock-hudson-1-768Rock Hudson was at the height of his fame in the early ’60s, though his public image was decidedly different than the private life he shared with boyfriend Lee Garlington.

The two dated form 1962-1965, and now nearly 30 years after Hudson’s death from AIDS at age 59, Garlington recalls his memories of the chiseled star.

“He was a sweetheart,” Garlington, 77, tells People. “I adored him.”

Garlington was a film extra in 1962, and after hearing rumors about Hudson, decided to stage a meeting.

“He was the biggest movie star in the world and the rumors were that he was gay,” he says. “So I thought ‘Let me get an eye on him.’ I stood outside his cottage on the Universal lot, pretending to read Variety, which was probably upside down at the time. He walked out and down the street. He looked back once. That was it.”

A year passed (a year?!) and Garlington got a phone call from one of Hudson’s friends, asking if he’d like to meet the actor.

Garlington drove to Hudson’s Beverly Hills mansion for their first meeting. “Of course, he was 6-foot-4, a monster. He offered me a beer but nothing happened. Literally. I was too scared. He said ‘Well, let’s get together’ and we did.”

We suppose “let’s get together” was as good a pickup line as any for Hudson.

18_rock-hudson-pool_C2101_R_ampliacion-360x419“I’d come over after work, spend the night and leave the next morning,” Garlington recalls to People. “I’d sneak out at 6 a.m. in my Chevy Nova and coast down the street without turning on the engine so the neighbors wouldn’t hear. We thought we were being so clever.”

They may have kept the secret from the public, but Paul Newman was another story.

“Nobody in their right mind came out. It was career suicide. We all pretended to be straight. Once we met Paul Newman and his wife [Joanne Woodward] at a premiere. He looked at me and smiled. I just read in his face – that maybe he knew Rock and I were together. We kind of laughed about it.”

Eventually, though, the passion died down and the two found they weren’t able to meet each other’s needs.

“One of the reasons we went our own way because in a way I wanted a father figure and he was not strong enough,” he says. “Rock wasn’t a real strong personality. He was a gentle giant.”

After Hudson’s death, Garlington read the actor’s autobiography in which Hudson refers to Garlington as his “true love.”

“I broke down and cried,” he recalls. “I just lost it. He said his mother and I were the only people he ever loved. I had no idea I meant that much to him.”

Hillary Clinton: Supreme Court Should Rule In Favor Of Same-Sex Marriage

Hillary Clinton: Supreme Court Should Rule In Favor Of Same-Sex Marriage
Hillary Clinton wants the Supreme Court to rule in favor of same-sex marriage, her campaign revealed on Wednesday.

“Hillary Clinton supports marriage equality and hopes the Supreme Court will come down on the side of same-sex couples being guaranteed that constitutional right,” a Hillary for America spokesperson told the Washington Blade.

The former secretary of state’s stance on marriage equality has shifted over the years.

She first came out in favor of same-sex marriage in 2013, but she told NPR in June that she thought states should be able to decide whether or not legalize it — leaving many supporters wondering whether she backed marriage equality nationally.

“For me, marriage had always been a matter left to the states,” she said. “And in many of the conversations that I and my colleagues and supporters had, I fully endorse the efforts by activists who work state by state, and in fact that is what is working.”

During her 2008 presidential bid, she supported civil unions but stopped short of supporting full equality.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on same-sex marriage in June.

University Of Texas Student Denied Service At Burger Chain For Wearing Women’s Clothing

University Of Texas Student Denied Service At Burger Chain For Wearing Women’s Clothing

RlVUcR7A University of Texas student who identifies as gender queer was denied entry to a Whataburger chain restaurant in Austin because of their attire (right).

Is it a conservative look? No. But it was past midnight at the burger joint near the UT campus — if a female student stumbled in after a night of partying wearing the same thing, think she’d get served? We tend to think so.

Tyler Grant, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, was told their outfit was too revealing, too “see-through.” But what is actually being revealed? Tyler’s thighs? Shocking. Shoulders? The horror.

The conflict began when an off-duty Austin police officer working security for the restaurant approached a barefoot Tyler outside and said they had to put their shoes on. It’s important to note that on first look, the guard only saw one problem with the outfit — no shoes.

Tyler complied. “Wait, are you a dude?” the off-duty officer told them, according to Tyler. Tyler replied, “That’s not a very nice question to ask.” That’s when the officer said, “You can’t go in there like that.”

He went inside and fetched the manager.

Part of that interaction was caught on video.

In the clip, we see Tyler trying to explain that the outfit isn’t revealing anything that would justify denying service.

Screen Shot 2015-04-15 at 9.36.44 AMTyler later wrote on Facebook:

“I was wearing two inches of hip/butt pads, 2 pairs of dancers tights, and three pairs of nude panty hose. If it were see through then she would have seen my brightly colored underwear, which also covered up everything essential anyway, but you couldn’t even see those.”

Whataburger Corporate Communications insists that the incident was by the book. They put out the following statement:

“Whataburger is proud to serve all customers regardless of race, gender or orientation. This wasn’t an issue of gender but of appropriate attire as this guest was dressed in lingerie. Again, we welcome everyone into our restaurants but our customers’ experience is our top priority. We are reviewing these events with our team members and will take appropriate action if needed.”

“I really believe it was transphobia-driven and I don’t think it had anything to do with what I was wearing,” Tyler told San Antonio Express-News.

Tyler, who has been to the restaurant several times in the past without incident, plans to consult the university’s Legal Services for Students division for advice on possible legal action.

Transgender 'Men's Health' Cover Model Hopeful Aydian Dowling 'So Happy and Proud' for the Support: VIDEO

Transgender 'Men's Health' Cover Model Hopeful Aydian Dowling 'So Happy and Proud' for the Support: VIDEO

Dowling

Yesterday we reported on trans bodybuilder Aydian Dowling’s ascent to the top of a competition to be the next Men’s Health ‘Ultimate Guy’cover model

DowlingDowling told the Daily Beast in an interview and profile that he’s grateful for all the support:

“It’s been crazy and amazing. I definitely was not expecting all the support, but I’m so happy and proud of the community for using its loud voice and realizing that we really could do it. We’re banding together and this is us. We exist and we should be represented in some way in mainstream…It would be so affirming to just know that the man that I set out to be is somebody that people think is a good man…I’m feeling proud of our community coming together. This was just another competition, but our community said, ‘Hey, we’re taking this thing and we’re making it ours. We’re running with it. We’re gonna take it and turn it into something, because we want it to be something.’ I’m completely in awe and humbled by how much love and support I’ve gotten.””

Dowling has received 24,144 votes as of this posting, outrunning the nearest competitor by more than 16,000 votes. He made a video on Tuesday remarking on his progress (he was still #12 at that point) and rallying people to his cause.
