Less Invisible: LGBT Images in Latino Media in 2014

Less Invisible: LGBT Images in Latino Media in 2014
At GLAAD we’re often asked how LGBT equality is doing in Latino USA and in Spanish-speaking countries. The answer isn’t simple, not a thumbs up or thumbs down. It’s instead complex, just like the world in which we live. We’ve seen many setbacks and there’s a lot of work to do, but we’ve also seen some hard-fought wins. And more inclusion.

Here’s our top ten list of moments that mattered in Spanish-Language and Latino media in 2014.

Supreme!
In July, Puerto Rico saw appointment of openly gay Supreme court justice, Maité Oronoz Rodríguez. Not surprisingly, media in Puerto Rico covered her story fully, although much more could have been done nationally. The last few years have seen too many legal setbacks and crimes against LGBT people in Puerto Rico, so seeing the swearing in of out and proud Oronoz Rodríguez, surrounded by her family and hearing her thank her partner in her speech, was a much-needed win.

It’s about love, not “controversy”
Coverage of marriage equality has improved over the years, and in 2014 it was nice to see the celebrity magazine TV Notas and other outlets like Mexico-based celebrity show Ventaneando treat the marriage of novela hunk Sebastian Ligarde the way they would treat any other marriage. It helps that Ligarde is so comfortable being out and has a very supportive (and big) family, including kids and grandkids who came to his wedding. Also on the marriage issue, beloved Telemundo on-air judge Doctora Ana Maria Polo of Caso Cerrado, released a strong statement in both Spanish and English detailing her support for marriage equality. Polo, who has millions of fans on and off social media, argued that marriage equality only makes sense and, as she says on her show with a bang of the gavel, case closed.

Sing it, Tigres
A definite high-point came toward the end of the year when Los Tigres del Norte, the huge and respected regional band came out with an LGBT supportive song, “era diferente” on their album Realidades. The song, which tells the story of woman who’s in love with another woman, sends a message of acceptance.

Gol!
FIFA’s World Cup of Soccer in Brazil excited millions of fans but chants of an anti-gay pejorative by the Mexican team dampened things for LGBT fans. Univision, which televised the games, during which slurs could be heard, handled this issue in a great way and came out with a message of inclusion for LGBT viewers. Univision’s on air commentators shared an inclusive message directed to their lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender fans distancing themselves from the homophobic slurs.

Now that’s how you do Pride
This year Telemundo aired an amazing Pride video produced by Ileana Simancas, daughter of Venezuelan telenovela actors and actress/producer in her own right, which featured on-air talent and executives from the station who shared their love for their LGBT family members. The video was also aired during the popular morning show Un Nuevo Día, as the hosts talked about the importance of family acceptance.

Spirit!
This year we saw more Spanish-Language media support than ever for Spirit Day which calls attention to anti-LGBT bullying. Among those who participated were respected journalist Maria Elena Salinas, who co-hosts the nationally televised Noticiero Univision. We also saw segments on Noticierio Univision and on morning shows like Un Nuevo Día and other shows, that helped educate viewers on the importance of family acceptance and on the harmful effects of bullying and discrimination. Los Angeles station KMEX-34 did a great job on Spirit Day, even hosting a phone bank to connect LGBT people and their families to community services.

Big wins internationally
This year Ecuador’s coalition of LGBT and allied activists led by Silueta X won a victory as the government sanctioned the channel TVAmazonas for airing an episode of a comedy sketch show called La Pareja Feliz/The Happy Couple which was denigrating to members of the LGBT community, the indigenous community and those who belong to both.

This was also a very big year in Peru, where Carlos Bruce came out. Bruce is a member of congress and former minister and also one of the main drivers of debate on civil unions for same-sex couples. It was also the year when Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa wrote an op-ed that got lots of media attention, supporting relationship recognition.

Argentina’s public television station aired the Premio Orgullo Ciudadano (Pride Citizen Awards) given out by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Federation of Argentina and held at the historic Teatro Maipo, a theater that continuously supports LGBT-themed plays.

Colombian YouTube star Juan Pablo Jaramillo came out in 2014 and helped educate his millions of fans and started a dialogue in Colombian media.

Chile’s LGBT group MOVILH (the movement for the liberation and integration of gay people, by its Spanish initials MOVILH) published and distributed, Nicolás Tiene Dos Papás, about a household headed by two dads, that got the conversation about equality going even more. Todo Mejora Chile and others have also made great strides in the past years shining a spotlight on the need for equality and acceptance. Demi Lovato even recorded this supportive message for her LGBT fans while she was on tour there.

Real and Inclusive
In 2014, we were very happy to see a transgender contestant on Telemundo’s Yo Soy El Artista. Transgender singer and actress Abigail Pereira shared her story and the judges, including openly gay author Boris Izaguirre, as well as singer Lucero, applauded her for it.

Morning shows and popular advice segments are increasingly including information that includes LGBT viewers like a segment on the morning show Un Nuevo Día that offered tax advice to LGBT couples.

Immigration reform inclusion
On the topic of immigration, more media outlets took into account the advocacy and participation of LGBT immigrants, who are still working hard along with the rest of the immigrant community for full, inclusive and permanent immigration reform. Huffington Post Voces, The Advocate and other outlets continue to share their stories in both Spanish and English.

On the Radio
Radio continues to be very important in Spanish-language media and programs like Al Aire con Tsi-Tsi-Ki, and hosts like Enrique Santos, Fernando Espuelas and others in Spanish as well as the lauded Latino USA and Radio Bilingue in English continue to share important stories about being Latino and LGBT.

There were lots of moments to include, so please do let us know if you want to remind us of an event or accomplishment that moved you.

Pop The Bubbly, An Ab Fab Movie Is Coming To The Rescue

Pop The Bubbly, An Ab Fab Movie Is Coming To The Rescue

p01m5n0bDarlings, you’ll want to put down the champagne before you hear this. Then, you’ll want to pick it up, down it, and pour another glass.

Jennifer Saunders, 56, has announced that an Ab Fab feature is most certainly happening in 2015.

Saunders, who also plays mother-of-the-century and PR diva extraordinaire Edina in the show, has finished writing a script for a movie that has apparently been in the works since the series first went off the air in 1995.

She told the Sunday People, “I’ve finished the first draft. I’m feeling euphoric. My proper New Year’s resolution is to do the film, otherwise it’ll be a pointless year of procrastination.”

Edina’s daughter Saffy, played by Julia Sawalha, 46, has naturally been written into the script. By now she must be a doctor or something, but she’ll never be too old to shake her head at Mum’s antics.

Jen joked she would like to see Angelina Jolie, 39, replacing Joanna Lumley, 68, as Patsy and an orangutan playing her part.

“That would be funny, Angelina Jolie and an orangutan.”

We’re not sure what Jen was smoking when she made those casting decisions, but we’ll be perfectly happy with the original cast, thank you.

From Will and Grace to Modern Family: The Global Effect of Gay Characters on American TV – VIDEO

From Will and Grace to Modern Family: The Global Effect of Gay Characters on American TV – VIDEO

HT_modern_family_sk_140522_16x9_992

In a new video for BBC News, Tom Brook reports on the ubiquity of gay characters in American TV shows and the effect these characters have worldwide.

The short video segment profiles two men: one with a more optimistic outlook on the issue, and one who is more pessimistic.

WillandgraceThe former is activist Omar Sharif Jr.,  who spent his youth in Egypt. He didn’t know any gay people growing up, but he was familiar with characters like Jack from “Will and Grace.” Said Sharif:

By seeing these characters on TV, youth across the world — myself included — learned that we weren’t alone, that different isn’t bad. That there’s a community out there (even if it’s across vast oceans sometimes) that supports them and loves them for who they are.

Russian-born pianist and journalist Oleg Dusaev has a different take. He now lives in New York, but he has experienced homophobia in Russia. Dusaev says he once “had hope these shows and films could change society in a more tolerant way.”

Unfortunately, he worries that shows like “Modern Family” could make people “resistant” to new attitudes; he believes homophobic people “hate gays” point blank, and that these shows “could increase the hatred.”

Sharif makes a similar point, noting that gay characters are sometimes used “as a tool to propagate hate,” but that in terms of net effect, these shows are doing much more good than bad to change the cultural tenor.

Alysha Umphress Teams Up With Jeff Blumenkrantz For 'I've Been Played' Album

Alysha Umphress Teams Up With Jeff Blumenkrantz For 'I've Been Played' Album
Broadway scene-stealing ace Alysha Umphress turns jazz chanteuse for a new collaboration with actor-composer Jeff Blumenkrantz.

The star of “On The Town” lends her vocals to “I’ve Been Played: Alysha Umpress Swings Jeff Blumenkrantz,” which features original songs by Blumenkrantz as well as his arrangements of classic Broadway tunes from “Annie,” “Cinderella” and other smash musicals.

The singer-actress says the pair recorded “I’ve Been Played” during her first week of rehearsals for “On The Town” last summer, though the album’s release couldn’t come at a more prolific time for the star. Ultimately, though, Umphress sees the project as a labor of love between two longstanding friends.

Get an exclusive listen to Umphress singing “Celebrate” below:

The Huffington Post recently caught up with Umphress, who was set to perform a set of tunes with Blumenkrantz at a Jan. 5 album release party at New York’s Birdland. Here’s what she had to say about juggling a Broadway role with the release of her first solo recording, working with Blumenkrantz and her hopes for 2015.

The Huffington Post: What’s the secret to juggling a massive role in a big Broadway musical yet still finding enough time in a day to record an album?
Alysha Umphress: Well, that’s easy! We recorded the album my first week of rehearsals for “On The Town” back in August. Luckily, because most of the principles had done the show at Barrington Stage the summer prior, they focused primarily on the big dance numbers the first week and our workload was on the lighter side. I think there were a few days where I was called for maybe an hour or not at all so it was actually the perfect time to record an album! It was all Jeff’s idea. He’s smart.

Since this marks your first solo recording, why did the time feel right to release it now?
Well, when you’re given a great platform [like “On The Town”] to get your name out there, it’s an ideal time to strike while the iron is hot or at least warm? Plus this album is jazzy and swingy and very in the world of my character in “On The Town” so it’s a perfect accompaniment. It would be odd if I were putting out a bluegrass/alternative album right now, right? Or maybe then people would be like, “Wow, she’s so versatile!” Hmmmm….

You’re certainly kicking off your 2015 with a bang. Do you see this album fulfilling a New Year’s resolution of sorts?
I guess I hadn’t thought about that until you said that. But yes, in a way, definitely. We picked this date because that’s when we estimated the album would be done and when we could get the band together to do this release show, and it was after the holidays. But it’s starting off 2015 with something really exciting that I’m really proud of, so if that’s not a great way to start out the year, I don’t know what is.

What’s the best part about working with Jeff Blumenkrantz on a project like this?
Everything! Well, for starters, he’s one of my oldest and dearest friends so it’s always a pleasure to get to be around him in any capacity — and he’s so unbelievably talented that I knew the end product was going to be sublime. Jeff is a perfectionist in every aspect of his life. He’s so meticulous about every detail that I wasn’t worried at any point during this process. He had — and has — 100 percent of my faith and trust in what he does. I’m such a fan of his music and I can’t wait for everyone to hear this album.

Conversely, what’s the most challenging part?
I think because Jeff is so specific about what he wants, at times when we were recording, he would give me notes about phrasing or note placement that I would feel like I was nailing and I suppose (to his ear) I wasn’t, so he would note me further and I would get a little frustrated and be like, “But this is how I want to sing this pass.” And then I would check myself and say, “Alysha, he’s producing this album, you need to take the criticism,” and I would do what he wanted, and it would be great and we would move on. I love you Jeff.

This album gives you the opportunity to put your signature stamp on a number of original Blumenkrantz tunes. Which is your favorite, and why?
This is such a tough one. I loved doing all of the duets with Jeff. If we could have done an album of all duets I would have been tickled pink, but most of the duets were songs Jeff arranged and aren’t original JB tunes. So duets aside I would have to say I have two. “I’ve Been Played,” which is the album’s title, is one. I love it because no one else has sung it for him whether on his podcast or on another recording and because it’s the ideal smoky jazzy torch song with such clever lyrics. The first time I heard it I was like, “This sounds like it’s from a classic 1940s musical.” Plus, he wrote the song with my voice in mind so I feel like it’s perfectly suited for me. The other is “Giving Thanks.” I asked specifically if we could include this one on the album because whenever I would hear him sing it at any of his concerts over the years, it always makes me cry. I’m just in love with it.

Which of these songs best describes your current mood as 2014 winds to a close, and why?
I suppose “Celebrate”! It’s fun and brassy and joyous. 2014 was one of the best years of my life and hope that 2015 can keep with trend. I have a feeling it will top it.

Which of these songs do you most look forward to performing live, and why?
“I Don’t Need Anything But You” and “You Are Never Away/Ten Minutes Ago.” Both are duets with Jeff which I always love doing and the arrangements are off-the-charts amazing. I’m so excited for people to hear songs they already know and to see how Jeff has made them even more amazing and unexpected.

What is Alysha Umphress most looking forward to doing in 2015?
In October my grandfather will be 100 years old. I can’t wait to be at that party. He was born in 1915. That is crazy!

Israel's Lone Gay MP Announces His Departure From Politics

Israel's Lone Gay MP Announces His Departure From Politics

Israel’s only currently openly gay member of Parliament Nitzan Horowitz has announced that he plans on leaving politics. Though Horowitz’s time in office was marked by a number of personal achievements and recognition from his constituents, his chances of re-election were slim after he failed to secure enough support from other members of the Knesset.

“I love this land and I love you very much. We did many things together,” he said in a public Facebook announcement. “We led battles, initiated progressive legislation, we fought for basic values: democracy, human rights, social justice and peace.”

“In all the commitments and projects I took upon myself, I gave the maximum. The varied topics I dealt with touched many people: Fighting racism, [for] regional cooperation, fighting religious coercion, protecting the environment, pluralism and culture, and of course rights for my beloved gay community.”

Before being elected to the Knesset in 2009 as a member of the left-wing Meretz party, Horowitz worked as a vocal civil rights activist and an award-winning journalist. During his time in office Horowitz served as the chairman of the Knesset’s gay pride lobby, and was responsible for introducing a bill would have challenged Israel’s current confessional community system and allowed gay couples to marry or enter civil unions. In 2013 he also made an unsuccessful bid for the mayorship of Israel, that he ultimately lost to Ron Huldai, another advocate of LGBT rights.
