The GLAAD Wrap: 'The Fosters' casting news, 'Boxed In' web series, new video from Tegan and Sara and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Freeform’s hit drama The Fosters has cast trans actor Elliot Fletcher for a multi-episode guest arc in the series upcoming fourth season. Fletcher will play Aaron, “an attractive and intriguing law student who Callie meets at a coffee shop.” Fletcher currently appears on MTV’s comedy Faking It as Noah. The Fosters returns to Freeform June 20, in the mean time you can catch up on season 3 on Freeform.com.

2) IFC has launched a new sketch comedy web series, Boxed In, from out comedian/director/actor Amy York Rubin. The six episodes each deal with different aspects of queer identity – including dating, fashion, and coming out – and societal perception. Check out all six episodes of Boxed In now on IFC.com.

3) ABC’s upcoming miniseries When We Rise has announced several new cast members this week. Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire) will play community organizer Ken Jones and newcomer Ivory Aquino will play trans advocate Cecilia Chung. Four big name guest stars were also announced: Whoopi Goldberg will play Pat Norman (first out employee of the San Francisco Health Department), Rosie O’Donnell as Del Martin who co-founded the first lesbian organization in the U.S., Denis O’Hare will play out Democratic party organizer Jim Foster, and David Hyde Pierce will appear as Dr. Jones (father of advocate Cleve Jones). Showtime this week released casting news for their revival of Twin Peaks. David Duchovny, who played trans character Denise, is listed among the 217 actors appearing in the new series. In other TV news, Showtime has put in development a half-hour comedy adaptation of the web series F to 7th, FOX has ordered Lee Daniels’ musical drama Star to series, and Netflix has announced another new series in the Wet Hot American Summer franchise, Ten Years Later, to premiere in 2017.

4) Out artists Tegan and Sara have dropped the music video for their new single “Boyfriend,” directed by Clea Duvall. The track is off their upcoming album Love You To Death, out June 3, which is available for pre-order now with two instant downloads. The sisters also announced dates for their international tour, kicking off in Los Angeles next week.

5) Magdalene Visaggio’s comic book Kim + Kim has been picked up for publishing in July through Black Mask Studios. The book follows a trans girl and her best friend, both named Kim, as they set out to make a name for themselves in interdimensional cowboy law enforcement.

6) Mikael Owunna, a queer Nigerian-Swedish photographer and writer, is currently crowdfunding a new documentary photo series aimed at redefining what it means to be African and LGBT. Limit(less)  has already shot photos of several LGBT African immigrants, and now Owunna wants to expand the project and travel to new communities.
