The GLAAD Wrap: Ellen’s Netflix special, new music from Mary Lambert, Troye Sivan and more

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend!

1) This year’s New York Pride March will be aired on television for the first time in its 48 year history. WABC-7, New York’s ABC affiliate, will air the event as well as have it streaming on its website. This will make Pride available for people in the tristate area to watch on Channel 7, and available to the U.S. online. Out actress Caitlin Stasey has been cast in the upcoming coming of age film Summertime. The film will follow a group of young people on Long Island in 1983. Stasey will portray Suzy, the “wild child” who has returned to her hometown. The film will start shooting next month.

2) After 15 years, Ellen DeGeneres is doing another stand-up special. Announced in a Twitter exhange between Netflix and the out comedian and TV personality, the network officially confirmed the special with a statement from Ellen. There is no release date yet for the special, but in the words of Ellen: “I’m excited to do it, I’m excited for you to see it.”

3) Out writer, director, and actor John Cameron Mitchell has a musical television series in the works. There aren’t specific dates available yet, but the series Homunculus is something that Mitchell has been working on for over a year. In other musical television news, Nashville has released its midseason trailer featuring drama for all the characters, including the relationship between Will and Zach, who has recently been upped to series regular.

4) Netflix has announced that Arrested Development is returning for a fifth season, and that the entire original cast is on board including out actress Portia de Rossi. In sadder Netflix news, the streaming service has canceled Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down after one season. In happier news, HBO’s Veep has been renewed for a seventh season.

5) Mary Lambert released a music video for her single “Know Your Name” from her newest album Bold. The music video is an ode to friendships, arcades, and crushes, featuring a plethora of Lambert’s friends, including LGBTQ celebs such as Jacob Tobia and Sara Ramirez. 6) Out singer/songwriter Halsey and  Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui have collaborated to release the song “Strangers” off of Halsey’s upcoming album, hopeless fountain kingdom. It’s the first time the singer has used female pronouns in a love song. Jauregui came out as bisexual last year in an open letter she wrote for Billboard after the Presidential election. Listen to their duet below. 

7) Troye Sivan has released a new song, “There For You,” a collaboration with Martin Garrix. The song utilizes Sivan’s signature vocals and a catchy dance beat. Sivan was honored with GLAAD’s Stephen F. Kolzak Award this spring at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, he is the youngest recipeient of this award. You can listen to the song below. 

8) It seems that Marvel has a new Runaways comic series in the works, as they have begun teasings images of characters Nico Minoru, Chase Stein, and Old Lace. With an upcoming television adaptation in production at Hulu, Runaways returning to comic book shelves makes sense. The drama follows a group of teenagers who unite to fight the criminal organization their parents have joined, including lesbian superhero, Karolina Dean, and her shape-shifting partner, Xavin.

9) A new teaser trailer has been released for the upcoming second season of the YouTube Red original series Escape the Night, hosted by out YouTuber Joey Graceffa. The season two cast includes Tyler Oakley. Escape the Night is a murder mystery series where Graceffa and his guests are transported to a different historical era each season and tasked with solving a case. They compete with each other to solve the mystery with each episode including a challenge for the guests, in the end two will survive and be sent back to the present day.

10) The opera adaptation of the iconic film Brokeback Mountain will make its U.S. debut at Lincoln Center in 2018. The opera is created by openly gay composer Charles Wuorinen along with Annie Proulx, the author of the Brokeback short story. Speaking of musical adaptations, Transparent writer and musician Faith Soloway is staging a New York Cabaret show entitled Should Transparent Become a Musical?, which will feature original songs from a hypothetical musical version of the Emmy winning TV show.

11) The acclaimed digital series EastSiders has launched a crowdfunding campaign for the upcoming third season. The creators are raising the funds to cover the costs of finishing shooting and post-production, as well as advertising and publicity efforts once the season is completed. Season three will pick up where the last season finished with Cal and Thom on a road trip back to LA after a difficult year in New York, the first two seasons are available on Netflix now.
