The GLAAD Wrap ‘Call Me By Your Name’ and ‘Lady Bird’ in theaters, new music from Parson James, and more!

Every week, the GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend!

1) Call Me by Your Name opens in select theaters this weekend. Based on the novel of the same name, the film follows the romance between 17 year old Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet) and doctorate student Oliver (Armie Hammer) in the summer of 1983 in Italy. The film has been getting phenomenal critical acclaim for its artistic and intimate depiction of a love story between two men, still a rarity in modern film. For those in New York and LA, the film will be be released on Friday, and then will open in more theaters across the country throughout the month and into December. 2) A24’s coming-of-age story Lady Bird opens in wide release this weekend. The directorial debut of Greta Gerwig, the film follows the titular Lady Bird over the course of her senior year of high school at a Catholic school in Sacramento. The film follows her relationships with friends, boyfriends, and her mother as well as exploring other coming of age in the early aughts, including a character’s LGBTQ storyline. Lady Bird is already receiving glowing reviews from its limited release as well as doing exceptionally well at the box office. See where you can find tickets here and check out the trailer below.

3) The CW released the trailer for their massive four-part crossover between their DC superhero shows: Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. This two-day event, titled “Crisis on Earth X,” will also introduce new superhero Raymond Terrill (aka The Ray,) a gay superhero who will go on to have his own animated show the CW Seed, Freedom Fighters: The Ray. The event airs November 27th and 28th at 8pm on the CW.

4) SyFy’s The Magicians released a trailer for their third season this week. The show, based on the popular Lev Grossman novels, follows a group of 20 somethings as they must save the existence of magic in the mysterious and dangerous world of Fillory. The ensemble includes the character of Eliot, a gay whip-smart magician who is an important part of the core group. The Magicians will return January 10th at 9pm on SyFy.

5) Showtime’s The L Word’s reboot has found its new showrunner in out writer Marja Lewis-Ryan, the writer of The Four-Faced Liar and the upcoming film 6 Balloons. “Ilene and the original L Word made me believe that my voice mattered,” said Ryan, regarding the show. “I am beyond excited for the opportunity to usher in the next generation of diverse queer people. I couldn’t imagine a better time to make this show.” Ryan will be executive producing with Ilene Chaiken, Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig, and Leisha Hailey.

6) Out singer Parson James released the lyric video and single “Only You” last week. This is the first single of off his highly anticipated debut full length album, set to come out around summer of 2018, a follow up to last year’s EP The Temple. “Only You” is a personal and heartfelt break up song, which plays to the singer’s best emotional and vocal strength. “Only You” is available for streaming and purchase and you can watch the lyric video below!

7) Former America’s Got Talent finalist and out singer/songwriter Brian Justin Crum released a music video for his single “Wild Side.” He is currently working on his debut EP. “Wild Side” is available for purchase and to stream now!

8) Out comedian, writer, actor Tig Notaro has been tapped to host the Los Angeles ceremony for the 33rd annual Artio Awards, the Casting Society of America’s awards for outstanding casting. The awards are given to outstanding casting for film, televison, television, and theater. In addition to hosting and her stand up comedy, Notaro also stars and show runs the GLAAD Media Award-nominated comedy One Mississippi, available to stream on Amazon.
