Staff Exodus After Anti-Impeachment Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ) Announces Plans to Join GOP

Six staffers for New Jersey Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ) have resigned following reports of the anti-impeachment Democrat’s plans to switch to the Republican Party to avoid a primary challenger.

CNN reports: “Five aides to New Jersey Rep. Jeff Van Drew — Javier Gamboa, Edward Kaczmarski, Justin M. O’Leary, Mackenzie Lucas and Caroline Wood — wrote in the letter that they can ‘no longer in good conscience continue our service in the Congressman’s employ.’ A sixth staffer also resigned Sunday evening, a source with knowledge of the matter told CNN. Among the staffers who quit were Van Drew’s legislative director, communications director and his scheduler.”

Wrote the staffers in a letter: “Sadly, Congressman Van Drew’s decision to join the ranks of the Republican Party led by (President) Donald Trump does not align with the values we brought to this job when we joined his office.”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy ripped Van Drew on Saturday: “Betraying our values by siding with Donald Trump is the final straw and made it impossible for him to continue being supported by our party, as grassroots activists, local party leaders in his district, and I have made clear in recent weeks. This party switch is cynical and desperate, and I am confident that a Democrat who shares the values and priorities of our Democratic Party will hold this seat.”

New Trump Advisor Believes Homosexuality is an ‘Abomination’, Won’t Appear on a Show with a Gay Host ‘and Pretend Like That’s Normal’ — WATCH

New Trump Advisor Believes Homosexuality is an ‘Abomination’, Won’t Appear on a Show with a Gay Host ‘and Pretend Like That’s Normal’ — WATCH

Media Matters reports that Donald Trump has a new surrogate named Clarence Mason Weaver who believes that homosexuality is “evil” and “an abomination.” Weaver believes that there is nothing wrong with being homophobic, and has warned people to “worry about homosexual training” in schools. He has said he would not appear on a program with a gay host, and would have a problem with gay co-workers.

Weaver, a right-wing commentator was recently named to an advisory board position in Trump’s campaign.

Here’s a video Weaver posted about a Best Buy ad he saw which featured a lesbian which made him tell his daughter “homosexuality is a abomination. Not just a sin. It’s abomination.”

Added Weaver: “How can you find common ground with evil and sin? … I can work with homosexuals. I’ve worked with a lot of homosexuals. Worked with a lot of them. Political and social things. But I’m not going to stand there and pretend like that’s not a sin. Like you would not — I would not pretend like I don’t sin. I would not pretend, I’m not going to try to fool God to make you feel comfortable. I appear on programs all the time with homosexuals. I will not appear on a program with a homosexual host and pretend like that’s normal.”

Weaver continued: “It can be very difficult for you to tell me as a woman, ‘Hey, this is Betty, my wife.’ You’re not going to get a ‘congratulations.” No. I may say, ‘How you doing?” If you ask me what I think about you being married to that woman, you’re going to get your feelings hurt. You’re going to get your feelings hurt. Christians stand up for God, and when you stand up for God, you’re going to upset the ungodly.”

Media Matters adds: “Weaver has frequently pushed misogynistic rhetoric, including saying that women aren’t equal to men and that they damaged society when they won the ”right’ to leave the home and go to work’; claiming that women who report sexual misconduct at work are the reason ‘why we don’t want to be around you in a business’; and stating that women should carry themselves as ‘handmaidens’ and ‘be submissive.’”

Media Matters wrote earlier this week: “The Trump campaign recently launched its ‘Black Voices for Trump’ coalition, with President Donald Trump speaking at a rally in Atlanta, GA. The campaign also announced the members of its advisory board, which includes numerous right-wing media personalities such as radio host Herman Cain, Fox Nation hosts Diamond and Silk, and Fox News contributors Deneen Borelli and Alveda King. The campaign lists the involvement of Clarence Mason Weaver (who usually goes by Mason Weaver in media appearances and also lists his name as Clarence A. Mason on his website), a right-wing author and purported motivational speaker.”

Five Questions NBC Debate Moderators Should Ask 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidates

Five Questions NBC Debate Moderators Should Ask 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidates

GLAAD CEO: “This is an opportunity to discuss LGBTQ issues as we head toward the most consequential election of our lifetime.”

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today challenged all five moderators in this week’s 2020 Democratic presidential debates to use the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots, an event which sparked and fueled the overall LGBTQ movement of the last fifty years, to make LGBTQ acceptance and issues affecting the LGBTQ community a main topic of discussion during the first debates in the 2020 presidential election year.

“Particularly on the eve of the historic 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, it’s important for media and those seeking the highest office in the land to discuss issues facing LGBTQ voters,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “No candidate or political party should take the support of LGBTQ Americans for granted. This is an opportunity to discuss LGBTQ issues as we head toward the most consequential election of our lifetime.”

Here is a sampling of questions tonight’s debate moderators should ask the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates:

  1. What are your plans to achieve full equality under the law for all LGBTQ people in this country?

According to the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), LGBTQ Americans could still be:

Further, if an LGBTQ person experiences a hate crime, anti-LGBTQ attackers can still claim the so-called “gay/trans panic” defense in court in 44 states.

  1. A poll released this week from GLAAD shows that LGBTQ acceptance overall has stalled – and even moving backward among younger generations? How will you use the power of the bully pulpit to reverse this trend and lead our country to 100% LGBTQ acceptance?

A new poll conducted by GLAAD and Harris Poll found acceptance for the LGBTQ community has waned in the last two years under the Trump Administration, with only 45% of younger non-LGBTQ Americans ages 18-34 saying they were “comfortable” with the LGBTQ community.

  1. Will you support federal measures to forever ban so-called “conversion therapy” practices?

Approximately 18 states and Washington, D.C. have effectively banned any so-called “conversion therapy” practices. These “ex-gay” camps could cause long-term damage to LGBTQ people. This investigative report by ABC News’ “20/20” program brings light to what kind of damage “conversion therapy” programs could cause.

  2. What will you do to stop the epidemic of violence plaguing the transgender community, specifically transgender women of color?

Violence against the transgender community, particularly transgender women of color, has skyrocketed in the last four years. So far in 2019, about ten transgender people have been murdered, repeating a national trend since 2016.

  • 2018: 25 transgender people were murdered.
  • 2017: 26 transgender people were murdered.
  • 2016: 27 transgender people were murdered.

  1. What are your plans to reverse the 115 anti-LGBTQ actions made by the Trump Administration?

Following the election of Donald Trump, GLAAD created its Trump Accountability Project (TAP) as a resource for journalists, editors, and other news makers reporting on the Trump administration, which catalogues the anti-LGBTQ statements and actions of President Donald Trump and those in his circle.

Since the start of his term in office, President Trump and his administration have issued more than 115 attacks in policy and rhetoric against the LGBTQ community.
