Female impersonation was never suggested by my careers adviser.

Then again, neither was becoming quietly thrilled when an elderly gentleman on the Tube stood up and offered me his seat.

I smiled, thanked him and politely declined, but I couldn’t resist a private chuckle as the train pulled away. It wasn’t vanity or triumph that made me smile. It was simply the quiet satisfaction of knowing that, for one completely ordinary journey, I had been seen exactly as I hoped to be.

Not a bad day’s work.

That’ll do nicely.

Nelson Street, Bristol, England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 26th April 2025.

About this photographs.

In respond to the Scottish Supreme Court ruling that the definition of sex is sex at birth, many transgenders all around the United Kingdom staged protests against the ruling.

I heard that there was going to be one in Bristol, and decided to drive down there, to do some photojournalism of the protest.

This is one of the many banners and placards being carried around, giving messages and statements. What they are trying to say is about the British government’s decision to cut benefits for disability people as well as support for mental health, and support for transgenders, in order to free up the budget to be spend on defence due to the ongoing Russian-Ukraine war, hence the meaning of Welfare, not Warfare.

Part 4 – After The Last Goodbye

Part 4 – After The Last Goodbye

Part 4 - After The Last Goodbye

Eventually we wandered outside together, leaving behind the warmth, the laughter and the familiar chorus of goodbyes that always accompanies the end of a perfect evening.

The night air felt deliciously cool after the crowded room. The streets were almost empty, glistening beneath the streetlamps as though the city itself had decided to slow its pace for us.

Neither of us seemed in any hurry to reach the car.

Conversation came easily, drifting from moments we’d just shared to stories neither of us had intended to tell. We laughed at things that probably weren’t especially funny, but somehow became hilarious simply because we were together.

Every now and then we’d fall comfortably silent, exchanging nothing more than a glance and a smile that said far more than words ever could.

I remember thinking that evenings like this are wonderfully deceptive. You imagine you’ll remember the grand occasions, the celebrations and the photographs.

Instead, what stays with you is the walk afterwards.

The unhurried footsteps.

The easy companionship.

The quiet certainty that, for a little while, the rest of the world had become wonderfully unimportant.

Some memories don’t begin when the camera clicks.

They begin the moment you realise you don’t want the evening to end.
